Balaam is one of the most mysterious figures in the Bible, since we can see that he had the ability to speak to the gods of the land and also to God. Despite all his knowledge about spirits, he clearly didn't understand the real heart of God. There are glimpses of hope that Balaam gives throughout the story, only to be undone by his selfish ambitions to control God.

Jesus came to the planet as a savior who releases people from the clutches of sin. We see at the Pool of Bethesda that Jesus singles out one cripple to highlight His power over sin. Just after Moses intercedes for the people and stops God from destroying Israel with a plague, Korah incites rebellion against God's appointed leader. Instead of openly blaspheming against God, the people now try to usurp the authority that God has placed within the community. Naturally, God was not happy with that and showed the people to respect God-given authority. This speaks to us today to honor and respect what God has placed in our lives.

God has just performed miracle after miracle and led His people in victory to reclaim His holy land. Only they rebel. God decides to wipe the Israelites off the face of the planet with a plague only to be interceded by Moses. Just like all Christians on the planet, God wants us to reclaim lost ground to spiritual evil, but it is our choice if we will allow God to work through us to accomplish that major task.

Jesus being the perfect rabbi would be off-limits to sinful men, let alone women. The fact that Jesus allows and even supports the act of this woman anointing Him is astounding. Jesus uses this opportunity to show the religious leaders gratitude that comes from real forgiveness. This teaching is a great guidepost for us, that we should be full of thankfulness to God for our debt is erased.

In the final part of our four week series, we see the faithfulness of God revealed through a redeemer. Boaz shows us that Israel needs a redeemer who can buy back the entire people from their wicked ways, which points to Jesus. Faithfulness and trust are central for the people to receive God's goodness, even when they have been doubting like Naomi did in the beginning of the story.
