  • Being the Parent of a Child Battling Mental Illness (Avremi Gourarie)

I had the privilege of talking with Avremi Gourarie about the life of his daughter Yocheved, her struggle with an eating disorder, depression and her heartbreaking recent death.

On December 22, 2020, 24 year old Yocheved took her own life.

Yocheved was a kind and thoughtful person. Loved by all. She was a top student, always maintaining perfect grades in school and at the time of her passing, was in the process of applying to PHD nursing programs. Posthumously, the family learned that she was accepted at Columbia University in their DNP program on track to becoming a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. Unfortunately, her battle with mental illness raged, and she succumbed to it, not having fulfilled her dreams.

Avremi shared with me all that their family had done to support Yocheved throughout her struggle. She attended a Modern Orthodox High School, which was less restrictive than the Chabad school that she had previously attended. They assembled a therapy team, which included a stint at a residential facility specializing in eating disorders. Family and friends provided the needed financial support and other provisions so they could focus on helping her life improve.

The day of Yocheved's death came as a surprise to Avremi, who thought she was being supervised and making progress. The Gouraries and their community are still grieving, processing, and continuing to learn more about mental health issues as they ask themselves the hard questions - What happened?

Avremi and I touched on so many important topics in this episode that we could not cover in such a short time. Stay tuned for more episodes covering such subjects of being the parent of a child battling mental illness, siblings of kids with mental illness, and how to balance religion with necessary treatments.

  • Searching for God in the Garbage (Bracha Goetz)

Bracha Goetz walks us through her journey to finding purpose in her life. Her search began at age 12 when she started wondering what the point of anything was and feeling very empty inside. She thought there must be more to life than what those around her do and expected her to do. She began her struggle with food, experimented with drugs and sought out religions and philosophical schools of thought.

As an adult in medical school, Bracha came upon a Jewish school in Israel for those searching for truth and clarity. It was there she encountered the Almighty and found true fulfillment for the first time. Her desire for junk food diminished drastically.

Her transformation lay in teachings by Rabbi Noah Weinberg, of Aish HaTorah, called the 5 Pleasures. We must first understand the core truth of creation, that humans were created to find the most pleasure they can on this planet. There are five basic levels of pleasure in the human experience.

    (1) The physical five senses, the most basic level of pleasure - food, nature, music , etc.

    (2) Love -  appreciation for other human beings.

    (3) Meaning-- having a reason behind what you do and connecting to your community in a deeper way.

    (4) Creativity -  the joy of creative freedom and using our natural gifts for a purpose.

    (5) Transcendence, or clarity. When you can perceive and understand truths about God, people and the world around you and about yourself.

We typically dwell in levels one through three.  Levels four and five are rare, but when we experience them, we never forget them and continue to pursue them. Many people turn to addiction, including disordered eating, because they have not reached higher levels of pleasure and purpose. Almost all addiction is seated in the first level - the physical. When not fulfilled in the higher levels or not finding spiritual connection in the physical world, we seek more and more pleasure in the lower levels. Unfortunately, those pursuits can never provide what we seek.

If you have trouble finding joy and purpose in your life, try some of the exercises suggested by Bracha. Try noticing small things that are pleasurable to you. For instance, focus on an orange and notice its color, fragrance, texture, flavor - and any other pleasurable details. Connecting to what you eat the way it was intended, is a spiritual experience, which will deeply connect you to the universe and to your creator. If you have experienced emotional trauma, it will be challenging, but don’t give up.

If you find yourself doing something unhealthy, pause. Try switching activities. Dance around the house. Interact with other humans. Go outside. Then come back to that bag of chips and see if you still desire them as strongly. Oftentimes, you will find you were not truly feeding your soul, only your temporary, physical pleasure sensors. If you do finish that bag of chips, observe how you feel afterwards. Do you feel more whole? More clear and purposeful? Grateful? Or did it make you feel bad about yourself?

We hope you take the time to find pleasure in the "small things". What do you do? We'd love to hear. Share your thoughts with us in our private Facebook group.

"Hope is the part of your soul, that spark that nobody could cover up completely… it’s the resilience. It's an eternal light inside of every person... And it’s still there. No matter what. So the whole thing is to nourish your soul and remove the garbage. Your soul is still shining there so that you’ll be able to feel it and see it and experience it… it’s the part of you that’s a part of God. It is infinite." @Bracha Goetz @MatanaJacobs #HopetoRecharge

  • The Power of Pressing Pause

We are back after having taking February off.

Many incredible things happened over the course of this month. A distant friend sent me a book on "Nishmat", the very prayer I try to practice each morning. Several other friends and acquaintances also sent gifts and notes that went exactly in line with what I was doing. Speaking engagements also fell into line. Simply pursuing what one wants, sends energy out into the universe that leads people to (unknowingly) do things for us.

Taking time off allows us to pursue what our hearts truly desire and love to do. Speaking to those in need feeds my soul, and because I had cleared my schedule, I was able to take on several last-minute engagements.

The long lasting snowstorms made me yearn for summer but also reminds me that time heals. As winter will eventually come to an end, hard times in life won’t last forever. When struggling with having to wear so many layers of clothing to keep warm in the bitter cold days, I picture the day that is coming: the day when I'll be able to throw on flip flops and run out the door into the sun. That imagery gives hope and a smile about the future, which helps us to endure the present. We can know that whatever season we are in won’t last for the rest of our lives. Something better is coming, and if we focus on that, we can smile and keep going.

Silence has been proven to be important for success. In the silence, the issues we are hiding from come up, and we have to deal with them. If we continue to pretend they don’t exist, we will never grow. We also need time to rest, to recharge, and to reflect on who we are and what we are doing and why. We need time to remember what will feed our souls. Rather than getting caught up in the hurricane of life and doing what we’re told, stop. Think. What do you actually want to do?

Taking a break is so important in so many ways. We should all find a way to do so regularly. Give yourself that gift. You deserve it.

Sari Dana tells us her story of how she chose to move away from dieting after a long struggle with binge eating. She chose to give her body unconditional acceptance and love, no matter what happened to her size, which put her in a much healthier place both mentally and physically than she had been before.

Her passion to empower everyone involved in working with teens, including the kids themselves, is to retrain their minds to see themselves as a whole person, not just their bodies or any other part, and to love every part unconditionally. Once they have started that work in themselves, they can start to guide others as well.

Sari leads groups about developing healthy relationships with food by having healthy relationships with your mind and accepting every part of who you are unconditionally, by beginning with the invisible, through positive affirmations.

No two people are the same. Healthy sizes and exercise levels for one person could be quite dangerous for another. We tend to focus so much on outward appearance when 95% of who we are comes from inside our brains. Our thoughts, feelings, and energy shape who we are as people, yet, people often tend to care about the 5% of us which only we can see.

  • A Journey of Teen Bipolar Disorder (Nicole Howson)

Today’s episode of Hope to Recharge is sponsored by https://Betterhelp.com/hopetorecharge.

Betterhelp.com is the world’s leading provider of online therapy. Their mission is to make professional counseling accessible, affordable, and convenient, so anyone who struggles with life’s challenges can get help, anytime, anywhere.

    —————————————————————————

Growing up, Nichole and her family knew she was different; something just seemed “off.” But she wouldn’t get diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder until she was 20 years old. As a young child, she assumed everyone was having a similar inner experience to hers, so she didn’t even think to ask for help. Her parents didn’t understand how much was going on in her brain.

During a manic episode, Nichole left home and moved in with a boy several hours away. When the mania subsided, she found herself in the deepest depression of her life. She took herself to the hospital many times, and was turned away every time before finally getting admitted for attempting suicide and being taken home by her parents.

It can be difficult to be taken seriously when you go to the hospital with any condition. Taking someone along with you who can support and advocate for you, especially when you are not feeling well enough to speak up for your needs, can literally be a life saver.

Nichole took us back to her childhood where she never felt at home with her peers. She preferred the company of teachers and other adults in her life. She begged her mom to homeschool her, but her family was unable to do so. Her struggle with social anxiety and bullying caused her to do whatever she could to hide.

One of the most important things we can do to help ourselves or others who are struggling with mental illness is simply to talk about it. Have the conversation; bring it to light. No one has ever healed from pretending to be okay. Boundaries are also so important, whether in-person or online. Don’t be afraid to unfriend or unfollow or at least mute people. More importantly, surround yourself with loved ones and social media accounts that make you feel uplifted and healthy. You don’t have to keep following people or accounts that are no longer relevant or helpful to you.

Finding the right medication can be such a struggle, and it took Nichole 7 years to reach this point where she feels stable AND doesn’t have negative side effects. Persistence is key. Don’t give up. Human support is also so important. Being part of a support group teaches you about your condition from the perspectives of people who are experiencing it and can not only relate to you, but also warn you about something you might experience later. Above all, don’t give up. There is always another beacon of hope around the corner.

  • Talking About Teen Suicide (Laura Messner)

Today’s episode of Hope to Recharge is sponsored by https://Betterhelp.com/hopetorecharge.

Betterhelp.com is the world’s leading provider of online therapy. Their mission is to make professional counseling accessible, affordable, and convenient, so anyone who struggles with life’s challenges can get help, anytime, anywhere.

Head to https://Betterhelp.com/hopetorecharge for 10% off your first month of services. IMPORTANT: Be sure to click this link in order to get the 10% off code

    —————————————————————————

Laura Messner grew up in a typical home until her parents divorced when she was eight years old. After she became aware of how little she got to see her father, she began chasing after perfection in every way she could think of to “earn” his attention... until she developed an eating disorder and eventually attempted suicide. She came to learn self-love and to take responsibility for her own pain and healing journey. As a teenager, she resisted help because she was unwilling to admit that everything inside was not perfect. It wasn’t until her late twenties that she came to understand that her struggles stemmed from the pain she felt from seeing herself as a victim of her father’s abandonment.

Laura shares her insight of how healing comes from taking baby steps like practicing daily thankfulness, finding a group of loving people to support you, making healthy body choices, and figuring out in therapy what is causing you distress. It also comes from realizing that you alone have control of your life and choosing to see yourself and others through a compassionate lens. If you find yourself triggered into an emotional state, try asking, “What caused this? How can I fix this?” rather than allowing yourself to explode into a huge, long emotional display that makes you feel better because you are embracing your status as a victim.

There is much stigma admitting we are struggling with mental health issues or even just that we have emotions. The stigma doesn’t make sense because everyone has struggles, and many who hide it, wish there was someone they could share it with. If we suppress difficult feelings, they can spread like cancer making it harder to heal. Sharing can lift such a huge burden off of your shoulders. If parents or others are not supportive, find a mentor you can talk to who will not report back to them because to live your best life, you need support.

Finally, Laura shared with us about how she cares for her brother, Richard Junior, who is on the autism spectrum. Despite him not being able to give back as someone in a typical relationship would, she appreciates what he does give her, simply through his outlook on life. Richard Junior has taught her many things about life and love.

As we all know, sharing can help others. We are here to support each other and to learn from each other. In mental health, Together is better.

If you need more support in your mental health journey please reach out to us in our private Facebook group. We also offer free 30-minute fitting calls for our coaching program. You do not have to walk through your mental health struggle alone. Because as always, together is better!

As we begin 2021, Matana looks back on 2020, recounting the blessing of having experienced a year devoted to gratitude. She highlights how she chose to be in the moments that are phenomenal, chose to highlight the gratitude moments and chose to live with an open, grateful heart.

She shares how we can all invite miracles to our lives by focusing on the constant practice of gratitude, and coming to peace with things that didn’t go our way.

A key strategy she shares is how she decided to undertake starting and ending the day with a smile, despite the challenges of that day, the hurt, pain or disappointment, and focus on gratitude, which allowed her to see miracles throughout the year.

Matana offer us her "Gift of Light” special program, where she offers her listeners the option of working with her 1 on 1, over 8 sessions. This offer only has a small amount of slots open and is available for a limited time. The program is custom tailored to each individual and she will share her tools and techniques on topics she has implemented, such as gratitude, forgiveness, positive mindset and self love.

  • Breaking the Stigma on Teen Mental Health - A Teacher Speaks Out (Tammy Ozolins)

Tammy Ozolins is an extraordinary teacher. She returns to tell us of how teachers face an uphill battle in the field, boots on the ground, in the daunting challenge of helping teens who suffer with mental illness. She chooses to highlight the importance of being a friend to a student rather than a disciplinarian. In one instance, this technique resulted in a 6th grade student confiding to her years later, that her support drove him to not only graduate, but to join the marine corps with pride in who he was and what he became.

Many teachers are overwhelmed with the daunting task of teaching. However, awareness and sensitivity can often save the lives of their students. Being a supportive role model can often be the step that can bridge the gap to someone who is worthy of confiding in. Often, parents too may not be aware of the needs of their children and allowing the dialog to open up in a safe, healing space can be the difference between a child who opens up and a child that suffers in silence. That vulnerable bravery that a parent can muster is heroic and should be adopted by parents and teachers alike.

Parents, like teachers, should ask questions when they notice something is different, but should then be patient. Don’t badger them. They know you’ve asked and are willing to talk. A good rule of thumb is to ask no more than once a day. Children are in the process of building their self image, want to be popular, and are bombarded by messages. Not only in person, but online. They need encouragement to be popular for being kind. They need to learn coping skills for when they experience bullying, and they need to know it’s okay to ask for help and who to go to.

As we all know, sharing can help others. We are here to support each other and to learn from each other. In mental health, Together is better.

    —————————————————————————

Dr. Aviva Weisbord, PhD, was a gift to humanity. Her untimely passing this past week brought forth stories of an incredible individual, who harnessed her innate talent to help others challenged with struggles, mental health issues, personal problems and become a life long devotee to public health organizations, all with extreme humility.

Her focus was not myopic. Her vision was broad. She undertook personal responsibility to helping those with no one to help them, providing a listening ear, word of comfort, sage advice, albeit peppered with deep, profound and sensitive wisdom.

She not only mastered her craft but made it the standard to which all others would strive to reach.

As we begin 2021, Matana reflects back on some of the gains made last year, and how she implemented tools to heal, and looking at lessons learned from Dr. Weisbord on how to incorporate her lessons in humanity as tools to healing.

As we all know, sharing can help others. We are here to support each other and to learn from each other. In mental health, Together is better.

As 2020 comes to a close, we continue discussing our ability to harness the power of resilience that can be accomplished when focusing with gratitude. It is crucial to learn how to shield ourselves and create boundaries from things that are harmful to us and to become aware of our triggers.

We learn to say “no” things that will hurt us and give ourselves permission to ask, “Is what I’m going to do going to help me in my recovery, or is it going to set me back”.

We reflect back on 2020 not as a year of failure, but instead, we celebrate the growth we’ve accomplished in our desire to improve and grow. Our actions - the steps we’ve taken and our intent and drive to become better, prove that we have the proper motivation, we will succeed in our goal and we should write down all the gifts that resilience gave us throughout the year.

In her TED Talk entitled “The three secrets of resilient people”, Dr. Lucy Hone, who lost her daughter in an automobile accident, shares with us a powerful map to increase our ability to heal and move forward.

As we all know, sharing can help others. We are here to support each other and to learn from each other. In mental health, Together is better.

As we end the holiday season, Matana rediscovers her year, recounting the blessing of having experienced a year devoted to gratitude.

Matana introduces us to her “Gift of Light” special program, where she offers her listeners the option of working with her 1 on 1, over 8 sessions. This offer only has a small amount of slots open and is available for a limited time. The program is custom tailored to each individual and she will share her tools and techniques on topics she has implemented, such as gratitude, forgiveness, positive mindset and self love.
