On this week's episode of The Flagship Podcast, Horns247 columnist Chip Brown and managing editor Taylor Estes deliver a loaded show coming on the heels of Texas governor Greg Abbott signing the new NIL bill which will go into effect July 1 and allows for student-athletes in the state to profit on their name, image and likeness. Chip and Taylor discuss how the NCAA's lack of handling of the NIL situation could lead to the ultimate demise of the organization's control over Power Five football conferences, while also weighing in on ways Texas student-athletes could benefit from this bill immediately if the NCAA doesn't deliver guidelines prior to July 1. The Flagship then shifts focus to the Texas basketball team after Chris Beard has continued to see success in the transfer portal. The Longhorns recently added the commitment of UMass transfer Tre Mitchell, which gives Beard four of the nation's top transfer portal prospects after just two months on the job.

Chip and Taylor then preview Texas baseball's Game 1 matchup in the College World Series against a Mississippi State team that the Longhorns faced in their first game of the 2021 season and discuss how the Texas team the Bulldogs will face Sunday is entirely different than the squad faced in February.

Matt Butler, Rod Babers and Jeff Howe are back with another episode of Longhorn Blitz discussing the development issues the Texas program has dealt with for more than a decade. While 247Sports national college football reporter Chris Hummer's annual development rate study dominates the conversation, it's clear that doing more than simply churning out a higher volume of NFL prospects from the blue-chip talent pool is what needs to be rectified for the Longhorns to win big once again.

Rod Babers, Matt Butler and Jeff Howe are back with another edition of the Longhorn Blitz podcast to break down the impact of the transfer of former Alabama running back Keilan Robinson on Steve Sarkisian's Texas offense in 2021. Not only does Robinson bolster the strongest position group on offense, but his versatility should send yet another message to a wide receiver group with a lot to prove under the new regime.

Former Longhorns' football player Breckyn Hager joins the Flagship Podcast interview this week to talk about how he ended up with a starring role in the soon-to-be-released movie "12 Mighty Orphans," a true story about a Fort Worth football team made up of orphans in the late 1930s that went on to become one of the best teams in the state of Texas.

The movie is based on a book written by Jim Dent and stars Luke Wilson, Robert Duvall and Martin Sheen, among others, and is due to be released on June 20. 

Hager talks about how he was training for the 2019 NFL Draft when he became aware of the film being made and its need for live-action football scenes.

Having made a short film while he was a student at Texas, Hager has always had a fascination with making films and ended up auditioning and landing the role of Myrle Greathouse, a stellar running back and defensive lineman from Abilene who went on to play for Oklahoma under legendary coach Bud Wilkinson in the 1940s.

It was said at the time that no defensive player hit harder than Greathouse, who ended up being roommates with OU teammate Darrell K Royal.

Greathouse goes up against the Fort Worth orphanage's football team, known as the Mighty Mites, and Hager talks about how hard he hit the actors in those scenes.

(Hint: At least one actor complained to his agent.)

Hager talks about another film in which he makes an appearance - "The Blazing World" - which has yet to be released.

Hager and his father, Britt Hager, UT's all-time leading tackler (499 tackles from 1985-88) have formed a film production company and are now looking at developing other projects.

Hager shares a cool moment that occurred between Duvall, an Academy Award-winning actor, and Britt Hager during the filming of 12 Mighty Orphans.

Hager said he's been trying to keep up with the Longhorns' football team and is excited to see what new coach Steve Sarkisian can do with the program.

Texas has welcomed in a number of new faces from the transfer portal since Steve Sarkisian took over the football program. For the first time since the start of the transfer portal, the Longhorns picked up a number of players who have been a part of College Football Playoff teams, and those guys are bringing a refreshing change in mentality to this year’s offseason conditioning program.

On this week’s episode of The Flagship Podcast, Horns247 columnist Chip Brown and managing editor Taylor Estes open the show with some locker room intel as the Longhorns have made their return to campus for summer workouts. The Flagship discusses the unique mentality the transfers have brought to the locker room from their time playing for championship-caliber teams and how summer workouts are going with new leaders stepping up to take charge of team practices. Chip and Taylor also weigh in on the recent addition of Alabama running back transfer Keilan Robinson, who is expected to make his way to campus within the next week or so. Robinson adds to an already talented running back room, which could be poised for a huge season in Sarkisian’s first year on the job.

The Flagship then shifts focus to the baseball team after the Longhorns were electric in their NCAA Regional series and punched their ticket to the Super Regionals. Texas will face South Florida in the best of three game Super Regional in Austin this weekend, and a win over the Bulls will send David Pierce and the Longhorns to the College World Series.

After a short break, The Flagship returns with this week’s Love it or Leave it segment, with topics focused on the impact Robinson will make during his first season at Texas, who between Sarkisian and Texas men’s basketball coach Chris Beard has worked the transfer portal better since taking over their respective programs and what to expect from the pitching rotation in this weekend’s Super Regional.

Ty Harrington, who went to three College World Series as a player at Texas from 1985-88 and took Texas State to three NCAA Tournament appearances as head coach from 2000-19, joins The Flagship Podcast interview this week to talk Texas Longhorns' baseball.  

If you've never heard Harrington talk baseball, you're in for a treat this week. Harrington's love for the game pours out in every word he uses to break down what he likes most about this Longhorns' team, which he believes has a chance to do something special this postseason.

We start (and end) the interview talking about Texas' pitching, and Harrington goes into great detail about what makes Ty Madden, Tristan Stevens, Pete Hansen, Cole Quintanilla and Aaron Nixon so effective - in completely different ways.

Harrington was at all of Texas' NCAA Austin Regional games against Southern, Arizona State and Fairfield, and came away more impressed with Hansen, UT's redshirt freshman lefty, than ever before, because Hansen had to wait so long between innings in Sunday night's 12-2 win over Fairfield and still kept coming back to the mound and dealing (with a career-high 13 strikeouts).

Harrington said Quintanilla has had an incredible season that hasn't gotten the attention or credit it deserves, because his performances have been overshadowed by the starters going deep into games.

"Not many teams I've seen can go into their bullpen and call on a guy like Quintanilla," Harrington said.

Harrington talks about Texas' defense - from the slick glove work and lack of mistakes in UT's infield to the blazing speed in the outfield thanks to Eric Kennedy, Mike Antico and Douglas Hodo III.

And when it comes to offense, Harrington talks about how Texas can hurt you in so many different ways - from players bunting their way on base to timely hitting to taking walks and being hit by pitches and turning those instances into runs.

Harrington explains why he thinks coach David Pierce is doing his best coaching job this season and credits Sean Allen, the team's pitching coach, Phillip Miller, who works with the team defensively, and Troy Tulowitzki, the team's hitting coach, for the work they've done as well.

Harrington talks about the kind of team that might be able to cause Texas trouble in the postseason and how Texas' ability to field the same lineups day-in and day-out have built a special chemistry and camaraderie among the Longhorns this season.
