Horrifying History

Many people’s childhoods were filled with Disney movies.  In these films, there usually is a downtrodden girl who, against all odds, becomes the heroine.  But Disney did not come up with the premise of many of their animated films.  They borrowed the idea from many classic works.

In those versions, the princess does not necessarily meet their Prince Charming and live happily ever after.

So, snuggle in, my spooky friends.  It’s story time.

In 1879, there was a murder so grisly that newspapers continuously reported on it since readers were fascinated by it.  The crime itself was horrifying, but the aftermath was just as shocking.  It was a tale of class, gender, rumour, and the strange hunger of a society for the lurid details of domestic violence.

So, put on your aprons, my spooky friends.  You are about to hear a tale about an employer/employee relationship breakdown of epic proportions, but before we start, I want to give you all a heads-up.  Today, we will be talking about an extremely graphic murder.  Listener discretion is advised.

There is a place in California where redwood trees tower, and people disappear.  Five young adults came to Humboldt County in search of money, dreams, and escape.  None of them ever came back.

Locals call it  Murder Mountain, a land ruled not by law, but by silence.  It is where secrets are buried deep, and the forest watches every step you take.  It is a mountain that chooses who leaves, and who stays forever.

So, get out your hiking boots, my spooky friends.  You are about to hear about a place where five individuals disappeared without a trace.

On Christmas Day in 1929, respected tobacco farmer Charlie Lawson did not celebrate the day with his family.  Instead, he brutally murdered his wife and six of his seven children before he ended his own life.  The question that has lingered for almost a century is, why would he commit such a heinous act?

So, get some eggnog, my spooky friends.  You are about to hear the tale of a horrible Christmas tragedy, but before we get started, I want to give you all a heads-up.  Today, we will be talking about mass killings of both adults and children, mental health issues, and incest.  Listener discretion is advised.

It began as a routine red-eye flight that should have taken less than seven hours.  But somewhere in the dark skies over the South China Sea, Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, a Boeing 777 carrying 239 people, vanished.  No distress call, no mayday, and no trace.

So, buckle up your seat belts, my spooky friends.  You are about to hear the tale of one of the greatest mysteries in aviation history

Just off the coast of Cork sits one of Ireland’s most haunted landmarks.  Spike Island boasts a history dating back to the 7th century, and it has witnessed centuries of transformation.  From starting as a peaceful monastery to becoming a fortress of British forces, this place has been a location of strategic significance, incarceration, and death.

In Victorian Britain, behind the lace curtains and polite manners, something monstrous was happening.  In crowded rented rooms and shadowed alleyways, infants were disappearing.  They were not being placed in the loving arms of new parents, but into filthy cribs and shallow graves.

So, turn up the volume, my spooky friends.  You are about to hear the tale of one of Britain’s biggest sins - the business of baby farming.  But before we get started, I want to give you all a heads up.  Today, we will be talking about the abuse and murder of children.  Listener discretion is advised.

Every culture has its seekers of truth…those who look into the shadows and demand to know what waits beyond.  For many in the 20th century, the name Hans Holzer became synonymous with the paranormal.  He wasn’t simply a ghost hunter.  He was a researcher, writer, and pioneer who shaped the way the world talks about hauntings and spirits today.

So, break out your EMF readers, my spooky friends.  You are about to hear the tale of a man who spent more than half a century knocking on the door of the other side.
