WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Kamala Harris’ coronation as the Democrats' standard-bearer for the 2024 presidential election is now official after the Democratic National Committee announced the formal results of the online voting by delegates on Monday night. It caps a tumultuous period for the party prompted by President Joe Biden’s disastrous debate performance and his subsequent withdrawal from the race.
HORSESHOE BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Tropical Storm Debby has moved menacingly into some of America’s most historic Southern cities in what is expected to be a prolonged event of torrential downpours and flooding after slamming into Florida with heavy rain and high winds. Record-setting rain from the storm that killed at least five people on Monday was causing flash flooding in Savannah, Georgia, and Charleston, South Carolina, among other areas of coastal Georgia and South Carolina.
The National Transportation Safety Board is about to hold a two-day hearing into the blowout of a panel from the side of a Boeing 737 Max airliner. The safety board's hearing starts Tuesday in Washington, D.C.
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — The Chicago White Sox lost their 21st straight game, tying the American League record with a 5-1 defeat to the Oakland Athletics as Max Schuemann hit a tiebreaking, two-run single in the fourth inning. Chicago is on the longest losing streak since the 1988 Baltimore Orioles lost 21 in a row. The NL record since 1900 is held by the 1961 Philadelphia Phillies, who lost 23 straight. The major league low belongs to the 1889 Louisville Colonels, an American Association team that lost 26 consecutive games during a 27-111 season.

(AP) — Hurricane Debby is expected to bring potential record-setting rains, catastrophic flooding and life-threatening storm surge to the Big Bend coast of Florida before it moves slowly across the northern part of the state and stalls over the coastal regions of Georgia and South Carolina. The National Hurricane Center of Miami says Debby is located about 60 miles northwest of Cedar Key, Florida, with maximum sustained winds of 80 mph. The storm is moving northeast at 10 mph. The hurricane center says Debby is expected to make landfall Monday morning. A tornado watch also was in effect for parts of Florida and Georgia on Monday.
BANGKOK (AP) — Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 stock index has lost 12.4% in the latest bout of sell-offs that are jolting world markets. European markets opened lower and U.S. futures fell more than 2%. Oil prices also declined. The Nikkei's decline was the worst since a 14.9% drop in October 1987 that was dubbed “Black Monday.” World stocks tumbled Friday on worries the U.S. economy could be cracking under the weight of high interest rates meant to tame inflation.
The Lebanese militant group Hezbollah says it launched a drone attack on northern Israel that the Israeli military said wounded two Israeli troops and set off a fire. The violence on Monday came as fears of an all-out regional war mount following the killings last week of a senior Hezbollah commander in Lebanon and Hamas’ top political leader in Iran.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell has set the stage for the central bank’s first rate cut in four years. Powell cited greater progress toward lower inflation as well as a cooler job market that no longer threatens to overheat the economy. Still, the Fed kept its key interest rate unchanged Wednesday at a 23-year high of 5.3%, despite calls from some economists and Democratic politicians to implement a cut Wednesday. Instead, Powell said that, if inflation continued to cool, “a rate cut could be on the table” when it meets next Sept. 17-18.
CHICAGO (AP) — Donald Trump falsely suggested Kamala Harris had misled voters about her race as the former president appeared before the National Association of Black Journalists in Chicago Wednesday in an interview that quickly turned hostile. The Republican former president claimed that Harris, the first Black woman and Asian American to serve as vice president, had in the past only promoted her Indian heritage. “I didn’t know she was Black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn Black and now she wants to be known as Black. So I don’t know, is she Indian or is she Black?” Trump said while addressing the group's annual convention.
CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — A former U.S. Green Beret who organized a failed crossborder raid in 2020 to remove President Nicolás Maduro has been arrested in New York. An unsealed federal indictment out of Tampa, Florida, accuses Jordan Goudreau and a Venezuelan partner of violating U.S. arms control laws when they allegedly assembled and sent to Colombia AR-styled weapons, ammo and other defense equipment requiring a U.S. export license.

Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard says Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh has been assassinated in Tehran. No one immediately claimed responsibility but suspicion immediately fell on Israel. It has vowed to kill Haniyeh and other Hamas leaders over the group’s Oct. 7 attack on Israel that sparked the war in Gaza. Haniyeh was in Tehran to attend Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s swearing-in on Tuesday. Iran gave no details on how Haniyeh was killed, and the Guard said the attack was under investigation. The top Hamas leader in Gaza is Yahya Sinwar, who masterminded the Oct. 7 attack.
BEIRUT (AP) — Israel has carried out a rare strike on Beirut, which it said killed a top Hezbollah commander who was allegedly behind a weekend rocket attack that killed 12 young people in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights. The strike in the Lebanese capital killed at least one woman and two children and wounded dozens of people. Hezbollah did not immediately confirm the commander’s death.

ATLANTA (AP) — Former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama have endorsed Kamala Harris in her White House bid, giving the vice president the expected but still crucial backing of the nation’s two most popular Democrats. The endorsement was announced Friday in a video showing Harris accepting a joint phone call from the former first couple. It comes as Harris builds momentum as the party’s likely nominee after President Joe Biden’s decision to end his reelection bid and endorse her against Republican nominee and former President Donald Trump. Harris thanks the Obamas for their backing and says she looks forward to campaigning with them ahead of the Nov. 5 Election Day.
DALLAS (AP) — Southwest Airlines plans to drop the open-boarding system it has used for more than 50 years and will start assigning passengers to seats, just like all the other big airlines. The airline said Thursday that preferences have changed over the years and the vast majority of travelers now want to know where they are sitting before they get to the airport. Southwest’s unusual boarding process started as a fast way to load passengers and limit the time that planes and crews spend sitting idly on the ground, not making money. It helped the airline squeeze a few more flights into the daily schedule. Southwest also plans to offer redeye flights for the first time.

Biden insisted “the defense of democracy is more important than any title.” He did not directly call out former President Donald Trump, whom he has called an existential threat to democracy. “Nothing, nothing can come in the way of saving our democracy,” Biden said in his 10-minute address from the Oval Office. “And that includes personal ambition.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to make a long-awaited White House visit to meet with President Joe Biden and likely Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris at an important moment for all three politicians. Netanyahu delivered a scathing speech to Congress Wednesday to defend Israel’s conduct in the war and vowed “total victory” against Hamas.
A joint U.S.-Canada aerospace command says two Chinese and two Russian military planes were tracked flying over international waters near Alaska.
