There is a famous verse in Hebrews chapter 10 that says "It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the Living God."

In this final installment of the "House of Haunted Scriptures" series, we take a look at what the judgement of God is really about. 1st John tells us that whoever fears punishment has not been perfected in Love, but Hebrews talks about a fearful expectation of Judgement. Which is it?! 

I believe that if we properly understood the Judgement of God and how it functions, we would not only think it's good news, but we would welcome it happily into our lives. God really is good. He really is beautiful, even His Judgement.

In the most famous sermon of all time, "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God," Jonathan Edwards speaks of God's white hot hatred for sinners. He famously compared humans to loathsome spiders dangled over the fires of hell. This is the God that lurks in the subconscious of evangelical Christianity. But is this REALLY how Abba Father feels about humanity?

It's easy to lift a story like Sodom and Gomorrah out of context and defend this twisted version of God. However, if Jesus is the ultimate revelation of God's nature, then the question is no longer "can I prove this with the Bible?" The question is "Can I prove this with Jesus?" 

When we look at the story of Sodom and Gomorrah through the lens of Jesus, we actually see a God of tender mercy. A God who fights for the oppressed. A God who cares deeply about human decisions. A God who's making all things new. 

Everything about God is Love, even His Wrath. Let's explore this together!

In Luke 15, Jesus told three parables. One about a lost sheep, the second about a lost coin, and the third about a lost son. If something is "lost" that means it always belonged somewhere. In each of these stories, the characters were willing to go to any length to bring back that which was lost. All our lives we are told by the world and religion that we are worthless. Yet the fact that God almighty was willing to pay with His own blood to bring us back into His family speaks volumes about our true identity. If we are willing to surrender our own self appraisals, we can begin to see just how valuable we are to Him.

The claim of the early church is that Jesus Christ is Lord, God, and King of the cosmos! This can be a horrifying thought if we believe Jesus is anything like our earthly leaders. The Cross reveals something wonderfully surprising about how God almighty approaches power. Rather than extracting raw obedience from His enemies with threats of violence, King Jesus conquers through His overwhelming love. When we look at the slain lamb of God enthroned in Heaven, we see that God filters every decision through the lens of His self sacrificing love.
