2,000 years ago Jesus Christ announced that "the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!" Heaven is not a place we go when we die. It's also not a location that contains God. Heaven is a person, and in Him we live and move and have our being. The best picture I've ever seen to illustrate this comes in a retro-horror package. This week we dive into the hit Netflix show "Stranger Things" and what it teaches us about love, community, and the spirit realm.

Have you ever found yourself assuming the worst case scenario when someone doesn't text you back right away? Sometimes when we have trouble hearing from God, we assume that we did something wrong. Humans have felt a sense of inadequacy towards the Divine for all of history. Religion preys on our weakness by continually offering new systems of appeasement. We thought God needed a "temple of doom" style sacrifice to be okay with us. Instead, Jesus Christ introduces us to a Father who graciously provided his own blood to satisfy our guilt. The blood of Jesus was not to change God's mind about us, rather it is to change our shame riddled minds about Him! We really can be confident in His opinion of us matter what our fleeting emotions might tell us!

Many of us are taught from an early age to be deeply suspicious of our hearts. We might feel that the will of God is a tightrope, and any misstep will end in ruin. Yet when we look at the teachings of Jesus and the Apostles, we start to get a totally different picture. The Gospel is the announcement that our old, sinful heart has been crucified with Christ. We are new creations living in union with God himself! Rather than an outside God trying to manage our destiny, we have a gracious Father that leads us from within. When we begin to live in tune with this reality, we find that the desires of our heart merge seamlessly into the will of God.

This week I'm diving into a fantastically weird subject: Speaking in tongues! Whether it's the fear of getting possessed by the Dalai Lama spirit and accidentally ordering hordes of demons to kill your first born, or simply the fear that it's unbiblical, speaking in tongues gets a lot of negative attention. Yet I have found it to be a powerful and pleasurable gift from God when used correctly. Join me as I unpack 1st Corinthians 14 and maybe by the end you'll find yourself saying "Shaba Shaba Hyundai" too.

Every single word and deed of Jesus was loaded with intentionality and life changing revelation. Yet sometimes the revolutionary message of Jesus gets reduced to an elevator pitch about afterlife scenarios. Although it's true that the Gospel is so simple a child could grasp it, it's also important to let our minds and hearts be fried by the bigness of it all! Would you rather see photos of the Grand Canyon, or would you rather be overwhelmed by it for yourself?! I would like to argue that the Gospel of Jesus is something that will take the rest of our lives to unpack, and we shouldn't be so quick to chop it up into bite sized pieces. Rather, let's have fun exploring every facet of it together!

This week I am introducing you to "Nuggets." Since the main episodes take so much work with all their bells and whistles we will release them every other week. For the the weeks in between, I will do a short bare-bones style teaching. Sometimes it's good to skip all the frills and just share my heart with you! You'll have to forgive me for the audio this week, it didn't turn out nearly how I wanted it. I felt so good about this take that I had to keep it anyway. Thanks for your patience as I continue to learn the art/science of audio! 

This week I got SUPER fired up so prepare to dive into the deep end! 

The blood of Jesus isn't to change God's mind about us, it's to change our shame riddled minds about Him! Some have an idea that God's Holiness means he cannot be around Sin. Yet one look at Jesus Christ blows that idea away. If Sin is a sickness then Jesus is the only healer! Does our wrong doing disappoint God and push him away? Far from it, it is actually the very thing that moved Him to take on human flesh! We can tell how mature we are in the love of God by how we think when something goes wrong. Do we immediately revert back to a version of God that needs appeasement? Or can we rest safe and sound in the arms of our Daddy? If we can't, we simply need to gaze deeply into the cross of Christ and let our shame be destroyed by His love!
