    Strong mystery - good page-turner
I read this through with very few breaks, mostly those of a personal kind that don't need an explanation. The author's deft plotting and accomplished writing kept me turning pages. I read quite a few mysteries and loved the twist at the end of this one - didn't really see it coming.
    Good read
Enjoyed characters and location descriptions. Ohio has colorful town names, so Kissing Hollow and Dare Island fit the story well
    I like any book...
...you could read start to finish in one sitting. But what's really well written, is one you can put down, be intrigued enough to want to read more, and feel like you never left when you did. Good work!
    Good Read
A well-written mystery with a twist. The characters were different, and even if you suspected who the murderer was, the story still kept you engaged until the end.
    Great book
I so enjoyed this book. I never seen the end conning. I would recommend this book to everyone who loves a good mystery. I will be reading more of her books.

Title: A Pale View of the Hills

Length: 5 hrs and 59 mins
    Language: English

    Publisher's Summary:
From the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature and author of the Booker Prize-winning novel The Remains of the Day, here is the story of Etsuko, a Japanese woman now living alone in England, dwelling on the recent suicide of her daughter. In a novel where past and present confuse, she relives scenes of Japan's devastation in the wake of World War II.
    Members Reviews:
    More than meets the eye
Kazuo Ishiguro is a literary master; there's no doubt about that. A Pale View of Hills is somewhat slow moving, but there's more than meets the eye. Lovers of literary analysis and interpretation will love all of Ishiguro's writing, including this novel. Hidden meaning is everywhere.
A Pale View of Hills is about a Japanese woman, Etsuko, now living in England dwelling on the recent suicide of her daughter. As she recounts her life, a reader may note striking parallels with her memories and her present suffering; is it possible reality and imagination have faded? An interesting aspect of the novel is its theme of intergenerational conflict. Set partly in post-WW2 Japan, conflict develops between the old generation, whose regressive ideals are now socially unacceptable, and the new generation, who look toward a future of Americanization.
(For all you English buffs out there, Ishiguro is not a bad choice for a research paper, provided you have access to critical analysis. My local library was able to get books on Ishiguro's writing--which are rare--from university libraries in the state. The internet was also useful.)
For the casual reader, while A Pale View isn't a bad book by any means (it is very readable), perhaps Remains of the Day would be more engaging.
    Beautifully Written Book
The clear and precise way the book flows, leads the reader on a wonderful journey through the mind of a denying mother. We travel through a world of past and present while the narrator hides the truth about of past life behind her clever story.
    Good
I enjoyed this book. It is deep and thought provoking but not something for a light hearted afternoon of reading.
    Simple and involved narration
Simple and involved narration. Liked the flow and pace. The questions than the answers makes it more genuine. Truly Lyrical.
    Very interesting book
We read this for our book club and it provoked a good discussion. We had different opinions as to what really happened.

    okay
I thought the story was sort of slow but I did enjoy it. The ending I like best. Worth reading again.
awesome read, couldn't put it down
Nathan continues to flourish and grow in this next instalment of unimaginable horror and love. I can't wait for the next thrilling instalment to keep me awake at night.
    Not Your Typical Horror Novella
Okay, first things first. This is not a horror novel, at least it doesn't appear to be in the traditional sense. The only real horror comes toward the end of the novella, and that's where you have the obligatory: "Well, I didn't see that coming!" It's a huge moment, but up until that point, the only horror is the loss Elliot and his wife feel when their son disappears out of thin air. If anything, this is a sad, depressing book that you simply can't stop reading. How does a kid just vanish? Will they ever find him? If you're overly sensitive to missing kids, or know one who has recently gone missing, well, you should stop reading right away. Seriously, just don't even attempt reading this novella. Put it down and pick up something else.
Ketchup is going to disappoint horror fans, but if you're a fan of well written books, this is a must read. Robinson taps into real grief so you know exactly how Elliot and his wife feel. They each go through their own coping mechanisms which makes you feel even closer to them. If you're a parent you can't help but wonder what you would do in a situation like this. It's the connection to the characters that really pull you in. They act as any parent would, and as depressing, and slow as the story moves, it's still well written. Just when you think you have it all figured out, Nathan throws a curve ball and shatters everything. As slow, and depressing as it is, it's got one hell of a reason to keep reading, and Ketchup On Everything is a must read novel.
    Mixed Emotions
    2.5 stars
Hmmm... This book has left me feeling oddly conflicted. I liked the idea of this book. The blurb is oddly cryptic and I went in without the slightest inkling to what this was about - just like how I like it! I hate when the blurb spoils the story *cough* Hunting Lila *cough* - but that is an entirely different rant that I am not going to go into. I'll just say that not knowing what was going to happen next was the best part of this. The suspense was practically palpable in the beginning and ending of the book. The middle? Well, that is where I had most of my problems.
While Ketchup on Everything had its moments, most of it was awfully dull. The middle sections, the flashbacks, were uneventful and boring. They dragged on and on and took over most of the book.

Through his eyes, numerous "patient episodes" are described - many amusing, some serious, others poignant, but all very "human". Un-turnoff-able
Brilliant book, twists and turns in all the right places. Couldn't wait to hear what happened next.
you just will not see it coming
loved this book, the narration was superb and I was gripped by the story. It flowed at a good pace to secure engagement. an all round well written book matched with a great narrator.
    Predictable and awful narration
I did not enjoy this story and Im normally not fussy at all will listen to anything.
The narrators voice was annoying and I dont know if that made the story worse it whether the story made the narration worse.
    It's a grower!
I wasn't sure at the beginning if this was going to be a bit too typical chick lit for me (too much romance not enough substance). IT WAS NOT!
Gripped me pretty quickly and I've just spent the last 3 hours doing nothing listening to it because I needed to know the end. I never do that!
    Disappointing
I've read/listened to a few Adele Parks novels and usually enjoy the story and characters. The Stranger Within was great... The Image of You was totally drivel; ridiculous, unoriginal plot with unrealistic central characters whose 'motivations' were akin to something you'd find on a terrible American soap opera... Don't buy it! I'm requesting a refund.

Longlisted for the 2017 Stephen Leacock Memorial Medal for Humour
Growing up in the suburban hell of Misery Saga (aka Mississauga), Lizzie has never liked the way she looks - even though her best friend, Mel, says she's the pretty one. She starts dating guys online, but she's afraid to send pictures, even when her skinny friend China does her makeup: She knows no one would want her if they could really see her. So she starts to lose. With punishing drive, she counts almonds consumed, miles logged, pounds dropped. She fights her way into coveted dresses. She grows up and gets thin, navigating double-edged validation from her mother, her friends, her husband, her reflection in the mirror. But no matter how much she loses, will she ever see herself as anything other than a fat girl?
In her brilliant, hilarious, and at times shocking debut, Mona Awad simultaneously skewers the body image-obsessed culture that tells women they have no value outside their physical appearance and delivers a tender and moving depiction of a lovably difficult young woman whose life is hijacked by her struggle to conform. As caustically funny as it is heartbreaking, 13 Ways of Looking at a Fat Girl introduces a vital new voice in fiction.
    Critic Reviews:
"Beautifully told, with a profoundly sensitive understanding of the subject matter, it's clear that all of the anticipation for this particular fiction debut was entirely warranted." (The Globe and Mail)
"A brilliant and disturbing first novel." (Literary Review of Canada)
"Once in a while an elusive moment occurs when an author boldly states the exact thought that has often gone through our own minds." (Blair Mlotek, The National Post)

    Title: The Running War
    Author: E. L. Carter
    Narrator: Nicol Zanzarella
    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 8 hrs
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-01-17
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
There is no place on this round planet where I can run that will be any farther than the next place - any place will eventually spin on its axis until it reaches the point of departure.
War can live deep inside a family long after the combat has come and gone. With a poet's voice, E. L. Carter evokes that generational echo in the story of one grieving young woman who is trying to find her birthright.
Maddy has been running. She has run from her home, her family, and her lovers. Then her brother's suicide after being injured in the Iraq War, leaving her a mysterious note about a gift. With the help of an old family friend, she begins to explore her brother's story and her family history. As she works to uncover what her brother has left her, she finds herself in the middle of a parallel mystery: the legacy of her grandmother, a Gypsy holocaust survivor who has been ostracized by the family. In order to accept her brother's gift, Maddy eventually discovers that she must stop, listen, and face generations of women's war trauma that bridge Europe, the US, and the Middle East.
Part mystery, part meditation, The Running War weaves together narratives into a whole that asks as many questions as it answers. What does an enemy mean? How do we survive suffering? What is the women's legacy of war that embeds itself in generation after generation? Lyrical and haunting, The Running War is ultimately a call toward healing intergenerational trauma, no matter the source.
    Members Reviews:
A lyrical novel that reads like a gift.
If you try to help a butterfly escape its cocoon, youâll probably kill it. But watching the frail creature batter its wings requires a certain patience and hope for the future. In E. L. Carterâs The Running War, protagonist Maddy batters herself with running. She wants to find out how her brother died. She wants to know why her grandmother disappeared. She wants answers, but only the exercise of running will give her the strength to hear them.
Lyrically written, with unobtrusive symbolism and hauntingly evocative details, the Running War takes readers to the scary streets of Iraq, where patience is surely needed. It clashes contrasting cultures, and remembers with haunting clarity earlier wars and earlier wounds. Times and places, while the novels runs forward and sideways, are made clear in chapter headings, as wings batter past to future to despair to hope.
A musician with her hands drawn to the strings, her heart to her dead brother, and her mind to the holes in family, Maddy will learn of gifts beyond giving and see âWhen someone has a giftâ it means they are giving. Your gift is what you give.â
The Running War reads like a giftâwords to savor like music, mysteries worth solving, hopes worth redeeming, and a dark cocoon hiding beauty thatâs waiting to fly.
Disclosure: I was given a preview edition by the publisher and I offer my honest review.
    A very enjoyable reading expereience
The Running War by E.L. Carter is a beautifully written novel following the journey of a young woman running from past and present painful family trauma. Faced with the awful shock and grief from her brotherâs suicide, Maddy embarks on a quest to solve the mystery of a message he left for her, and in doing so unveils a hidden chapter in her familyâs history .
