    Not what I expected...
This was my first adventure into Sunni Randal predicated on earlier exposure to Sunni through the exploits of Jesse Stone. The exception at least for me was the performance of Deborah Raffin, her articulation, inflection, and tonal range were spot on. However, given that so much of Sunni's character has been exposed and expressed in the aforementioned Stone novels her character in her own series falls flat; moreover, seemingly whinny, and ill suited to the natural requirements of big city police force let alone the necessary skill sets required even to a greater degree as a stand alone Private Investigator. I really wanted to settle into this and travel the seedy roads with Sunni, but as for now the journey sadly has come to an end...

    Totally addictive series
I'm not a knitter, had to look up "counted cross stitch" to figure out what they were talking about, but the Minnesota locale drew me in to the first book -- and now I can't stop reading and/or listening.
I have no doubt it has a niche appeal -- especially the narrator. If Connie Crawford were reading any other series, I'd never get through it. But for a book focusing on the Ladies Who Knit, in Minnesota, she's perfect -- talk about type casting. That accent! Loved it -- loved it for this book, you understand. That is precisely how I would expect such a woman to sound.
Sins and Needles has much more going on than previous books -- a much more multi faceted plot line. Here we have Great Aunt Edyth, a confirmed man-hater, passing away at age 97, and leaving tens of millions of dollars plus a house filled with antiques. The various characters -- her descendants, male, female and assorted hangers-on -- all vie to get a piece of the action, but her Aunt Edyth's will makes it tough. She specifies it will only go to her FEMALE descendants -- which means that the male members, and other greedy souls (no spoiler here) have to work overtime to get their hands on some of the loot. To be honest, it's a textbook on greed and avarice -- watching all of them scheme and plot was enough to make me think that if Great Aunt Ethyl had been smart, she would have disinherited the whole crowing, clawing, vicious lot of them and left it all to an animal shelter. Sheesh! They're disgusting -- which gets pretty funny, actually. It's sort of like watching the Superbowl:. There's one ball, and everyone is willing to risk life and limb to get it.
So? Among other things, in addition to a murder via knitting needle, we end up reading about a hidden map, an actual treasure hunt -- complete with leeches! -- children born "under the blanket", lots of trivia about antiques (which I enjoyed enormously) and leeches. Did I mention the leeches? This book has got 'The African Queen' beat all to heck.
If you want a quirky listen, I highly recommend this book, and indeed this series. Lake Minnetonka never seemed so appealing.
    Wrong Reader
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I enjoy this series of mysteries and would recommend this title because the story is one of the better ones.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
I was engaged in the story from the beginning and really didn't know Who Did It until quite near the end!
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Unfortunately, the reader for this particular book had a voice that was VERY hard to listen to -- quite deep with very little contrast in voices with the exception of two characters who shared a deep southern drawl. In fact, one of the deepest character voices was that of the female protagonist which made it very hard to distinguish characters when she was in a dialog with a male character.

Perfect for an intermediate student of Spanish
I found this an excellent way to increase my understanding of spoken Spanish. It stretched my ability to understand just enough but not so much that I was frustrated. It was also quite amusing, so that it was able to keep my attention. Having the text available was very important.
    Great for intermediate Spanish learners
Not a great piece of literature but an adequate enough story when one's purpose is to learn Spanish. I reckon its lower intermediate/intermediate level. I benefited from the ability to alter the speed of the narrations which is available in the Audible app, lowering it to 0.75 for the first listen.

    Good but not great
I am learning Spanish and this helps with listening comprehension. It serves it's purpose. I plan to go through whole series
Short story for elementary to intermediate level
Lola Lago detective: lejos de casa is the 2nd book in the series I've come across but the first on audible. The reading is good and I could distinguish between voices, but when I burnt to CD the chapter didn't start and end with each track on the CD which was a bit frustrating. The story is okay, it does end a bit abruptly but it being for elementary to intermediate readers, the stories aren't meant to be too long. Great tool for developing your ear for spoken native Spanish though.

    Enjoyable
Where does Crime à Cannes [Crime in Cannes] rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
I'm studying French and am now at an intermediate level. I was able to understand this book which is entirely in French. The plot is quite entertaining. If you are a fluent speaker, you might find the story a bit simplistic. For me, it was at a perfect level.
What does Christian Lause bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
If you want to improve your French listening skills, this audio version is the way to go. The author obviously likes his central characters. They are a bit quirky but very likeable. The author's French is very easy to understand.
Another fun mystery to listen to for comprehension
Another fun mystery from Christian Lause to read, listen to, and study French! (This is the second book I listened to by him) It's an excellent way to learn new vocabulary, see the conjugations in action, in an engaging way, and to hear the language used in a natural way, not those stupid CDs that come with textbooks! He's the perfect narrator for the books. I'm starting the next one right away.
    Interesting story, easy to follow
Great performance and pronunciation for a short but interesting story. It's great for the French learner. I wish there were more stories like this for B2 and C1 levels.
    parfait pour mes etudes!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would! Of course, to a student of French like myself. I was very pleasantly surprised with Crime a Cannes and immediately purchased a few others in the series. It was very clearly read, with lots of expression, and was done with the French-as-a-second-language learner in mind: not too fast, clearly enunciated, with a story just interesting enough (and thankfully, simple enough) that I got neither bored nor lost.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Well, no, not exactly; it's not that kind of book. I was just happy to find an audiobook in French that wasn't way over my head. I read lots of novels in French, but it's one thing when you are reading and can look up words; it's a different animal listening to an audiobook in French.

    Good Sequel
Would you consider the audio edition of The Death Dealer to be better than the print version?
I have not read print edition
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
    plot was intriguing.
What does Fred Stella and Natalie Ross bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Love having the two narrators. i'm not particularly critical of voice changes, but few can do the opposite sex very well.
Not A Good Sequel To "The Dead Room"
What did you like best about The Death Dealer? What did you like least?
I really enjoyed the previous novel, "The Dead Room" of which this novel was intended to be a sequel. Alas, the performance was so far removed from it's predecessor that I spent the entire book trying not to compare the performances.
If an author wishes to have sequels performed, please consider using the same performer(s). The change in this case was just too great.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
The concept that the both the living as well as deceased characters from the previous novel are still participants in this novel.
What didnt you like about Fred Stella and Natalie Ross s performance?
The performance was too "sterile", lacking in depth and emotion. It was similar to elevator music in it's novel form.
    Any additional comments?
Again, the novel would have been best performed by the previous performer. She had the ability to give life to the characters.
    Generally really like Heather Graham...
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
No, of all the audio books that I have read, there are few that I would feel were a waste of my time and money. I didn't really care for this book. I didn't care for the story line - it was somewhat irritating and not believable. Plus, the female narrator had the female parts almost bad enough that I nearly turned off the book. I did finish the book - and it was okay. But, overall - not the author's best book.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
    It was okay...
What didnt you like about Fred Stella and Natalie Ross s performance?
She came across as whiny - not sure that is the best word - but it fits. Really did not come across as a very believable production.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
    No
    Any additional comments?
    No

    Members Reviews:
    Brilliantly written and very entertaining
All the Inspector Wexford novels are a joy to read, and Michael Bryant is the perfect reader. All the characters are clearly and realistically differentiated, and every twist and turn in the plot held me enthralled.
    Great plot
This is an excellent summer listen.
    Classic Wexford
This is one of my favorite Inspector Wexford books. While the book was written in the mid-80s, the story holds up very well today.
One of the beauties of Rendell's work is that while her characters grow and develop, you don't have to read the books in order. There are no spoilers between books.
The narrator is well suited to the story and to the character of Wexford. (I don't like all the narrators for the series; I wish Michael Bryant was available for more.)
Note: the narration on the actual file sounds better than the preview.
Awful, dismal, dated and contrived. So contrived.
What disappointed you about An Unkindness of Ravens?
The murder just does not make sense. There is no meat in it, nothing to serve as catharsis, or even reward, for trudging through the mid-1970s hippie trappings (as imagined, clearly, by someone not of the tribe. And the talked singing passages--cringe. More importantly, the victim, introduced immediately, is summarily abandoned, remaining a nonentity for the balance of this loose tale. By the time (finally) the murderer is revealed and the scene described, I had ceased really to care. And the misinformed use of marijuana as psychotic motivator just seems so silly. Bad trip all the way.
How could the performance have been better?
Michael Bryant: Thank you for NOT singing; you did your best with the talk-sing. Still; ugh.
Rendell keeps you interested by her characters
Always detailed characters how intertwined they are. You can relate to them they mirror some of the people in your own life and she gives you a way to relate.

    Great plot
An enlightened tour of the ancient maps and books collection in the NYC library, all wrapped into a murder mystery. An engaging read.
    Five Stars
    good book
    Good mystery
I was traveling to New York City so this mystery was perfect for me. It gave me a desire to explore the NYC Library but, unfortunately the bad weather made extra trips difficult so I will have to do that some other time. Lots of interesting information on
the library is woven into this book recommended to me by a man so it appeals to both sexes.
For Library lovers--and old book collectors
It is a very good, and quite accurate portrait of the New York Public Library workings, It is also interesting on the subject of collecting old books--rare ones at that, and also an intriguing mystery.
    Great as usual!
Lethal Legacy is the perfect read for a lazy read. You will not be able to put it down so it would be awful to have to put it down. There were many night that I spent reading until two.
There were so many possible suspects, that you had to stay right with Alex, Mike and Mercer until the end.

"These books are cream to crime buffs." (Cosmopolitan)
    Members Reviews:
    Part of an Extra-Ordinary Series
While not my favorite, all 10 novels in the Sjowall/Wahloo Martin Beck detective series are part of the exceptional ground-breaking evolution of police procedural s. As the current popular authors who do the intros for the audio versions all note, these novels, including The Man on the Balcony grow with time and have influenced and delighted at least two new generations of readers and writers.
The Man on the Balcony may not stand on its own as an exciting or riveting novel, but in the context of the series it carries the main characters forward and supports a unique mood that is hard to characterize in a brief review. There is suspense, but it is muted by the irony, complex protagonist and crew of cronies and coworkers, subtle dialogue, descriptions of the pathetic state of affairs in the Swedish Police Force and society, struggles to find meaning, etc. All in all it is a work of art that may require some time for appreciation.
I can fully understand why another reviewer only gave it one star. It is not surprising, that from the middle of the series, a seemingly weak and anti-climatic ending could be disappointing; actually, it was just part of the beautiful ,sad, sympathetic, unfulfilled, cathartic not with a bang, but a whimper- like point. One can certainly see many influences, from the detective series side, if you liked the Ed McBain 87th precinct novels, you will probably love this.
    How Times Have Changed
What made the experience of listening to The Man on the Balcony the most enjoyable?
Despite his poor work giving voice to the children in the piece, I can't help loving Tom Wiener's voice when he reads these books. There are narrators who simply become the voice of a series for those who hear them, and Wiener is that for the Martin Beck stories. I know he's not everyone's favourite, but there is something in the booze soaked, nicotine gravel of his tone that feels right to me.
What did you like best about this story?
Like is probably not the correct word, but what most interested me was the reflection upon attitudes in the 60s to the attitudes today. There are things that happen in the book, decisions that Beck and Kolberg make that -- in the context of a Western nation in the 60s -- completely make sense, but that today would send our young social justice warriors ascreaming. People did things differently back then. There were different priorities, even when it came to crime, and it is a good reminder of where we were and how far we've come.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
Again, I don't think I can judge Wiener's narration fairly since I love it so, but if there is anything Wiener excels at, it is his pacing.

    Good story line
Most of the Bookman series have been good books. Nothing outstanding, just really good listens.
    Unconvincing
I really enjoyed Dunning's first 2 books. This started well, but the ending just wasn't convincing. I felt taken advantage of.
    Signed but a second edition
I have read all of the Janeway series. This has been my least favorite so far. I have another yet to go but I was a little dissappointed. The story was good. The theme was good. The ideas were good. Everything was good. I just really have a high standard and expect great.
    Twists and Turns
I really love this writer and and I love his Cliff Janeway character more. Also there is no better narrator than George Guidall. Get all the books in the series; they are wonderful from beginning to end.
