Another mystery!!

I sound like a parrot when I write these reviews. They are simple, clean mysteries. They border on silly, but they are also enjoyable. It is so hard to find a book that can be listened to by young and old alike.

I will listen to them all, and hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

A great light reading with enjoyable story line!

What made the experience of listening to A Murderous Yarn the most enjoyable?

The narrator is great and easy to listen to. She does a great job in making the story come to life with wonderful narration.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

The plot is wonderful and light, the mystery is something that makes one think. Trying to figure out what the clues are is fun and the characters are wonderful.

A great story and the intertwining of the antique cars with needle arts is so refreshing.

What did you like best about A Murderous Yarn? What did you like least?

I like the characters and their further development. Loved the idea of the antique cars and got more insight to Betsy, the main character. I have listened to several, maybe 5 of these - however this one was a big disappointment. There was not near the investigation by Betsy, we didn't get the little minutia, and logical thinking that Betsy usually goes through. It was a much thinner plot, not as involved, in fact fairly transparent. I will listen to one more, and if it's this 'simple' - then I'm done.

Another winner

Monica Ferris has written another winner. Good mystery with all the characters Ive come to enjoy.

Would you consider the audio edition of A Murderous Yarn to be better than the print version?

I know it hasn't been from my previous reviews since the recordings have been available before I started the series. Just have to say that the narrator has improved some and there are now a few small variations in her voice assisting in depicting the characters and in giving some life and interest to the story. Please keep it up and do add more to future recordings.

Joan Hess fan VERY DISAPPOINTED!!!

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

NO. I have read or listened to everything Joan Hess has written regardless of the series. I love her books, LOVE THEM, but this one has to be an exception. I don't know if it's just the narrator on this one which I find dull and lifeless or the story or the combination of the two but I just can't listen to it. I have wasted my money. It took me several days to get through part 1 (I kept trying because I love Joan Hess' work so much) which I usually do in one day because it is so difficult to tolerate the sound. I will note who narrated this one and will not purchase anything else she reads. It's of course not personal, I'm sure she's a lovely woman but as far as being a narrator I think maybe she should do text books or something. It just sounds so monotone and you often can't tell when the speaker changes because the voice is the same. I also found the story (the first few hours anyway because I won't force myself to try and listen to more) to be not up to her usual standard.Overall I'm very disappointed and regretful that I made this purchase but having loved all that Joan has written I didn't think twice about the purchase and now I know to pay attention when it's a different narrator than usual for the author.I don't wish to be negative but I feel that other Joan Hess fans should be warned. I wish I could trade it for something else, because I would in a heartbeat.

Yes but I will check to see who is narrating it first.

What didnt you like about Rachael Warrens performance?

It was dull and lackluster which made the book difficult to follow because you often can't tell when the speaker changes. I'm a long time Audible customer but will not buy anything else she reads. If Joan Hess continues with her I will buy the book and read it instead.

Very interesting story line, everything pulled together in the end, and Mark Meadows did a wonder job reading it, nice voice, easy to listen to

Interesting story

I did not find gratuitous descriptive violence as some reviewers asserted. The end was a little bit of a letdown and I don't feel emotionally attached to the protagonists yet as I have been with some series. I will listen to the next book to see if I become invested. I like the narrators voice.

Good Listen

Love the series, this is a continuation of the last 3 novels. Sharon is getting older and changing just like the rest of us. You will enjoy this book if you enjoy Sharon McCone mysteries. Give it a listen!

Excellent Book

It's always fun to follow Sharon McCone on an investigation and this one does not disappoint. Many twists to this 'cold case' keeps you listening. Well read by narrator.

Worst Audio Book

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narrator used the same voice for every character so that I couldn't easily follow the story. Narration was so bad I didn't finish the book.

Schmaltzfest

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Not this book, but I would recommend one of Muller's earlier stories. I enjoy hearing about the places in the SF Bay Area because I live here and Muller is very true to the place, she must live here. But this book is a disappointment. Many authors get better as they develop a character over many books. I think Marcia Muller is getting tired of Sharon McComb.

I would think about it. This is her most recent book, and it is not really thought out in plot.

detective fiction doesn't get much better

- either does light fiction. Rebus is at this point in the series a complicated, fascinating character. Dark, but not depressing, his humanity shines though his gruffness. The supporting cast features many regulars from the series and Siobhan comes into her own in this novel. Rebus peeks into his army days - not glimpsed, I think, since Knots and Crosses.

This listen is best appreciated after at least several of the earlier Rebus novels. The only downside is that there aren't many left to go in the series... I had avoided Rankin because I'd been told that his novels are dark -- but they are not depressing and are rather life affirming overall. Rankin combines the best in modern police procedurals with the best elements of Golden Age detection and elements of a good, traditional Brit/Scot cozy with setting and character detail. Good dialogue too.

Like other later novels in this series, Rankin tackles a social issue along the way. That doesn't get in the way for me, but adds to the listen.

DI John Rebus - Edinburgh's best.

No matter how many Rebus books I read (or hear!) I never fail to love the grouchy, alcoholic, genius detective that is DI John Rebus.

He can at times be distant, cold, objectionable, unfathomable, bad tempered and wilful but he's a man who knows what's right. He doesn't hesitate in doing whatever has to be done to ensure that the innocent are protected. He'll risk his career, he'll trample on (often high ranking) toes, he'll jeopardise his life and health, he'll glower and he'll grumble.

But John Rebus will NOT stop until he's solved his case.

And that's why I love him.

Thank you Mr Rankin for creating him.

A classic Rebus.

Really enjoyed the twists and turns of the storyline which kept me engaged throughout. Rankin's characters are well described, seasoning the plot. long live Rebus (and Ian Rankin).

Great story! Couldn't put it down as usual. Really enjoyed this storyline....as always Rebus kept you wondering about his involvement until the very end! Just excellent!

Another great listen.

I'm on my second run through of this series and loving every minute. The story is great, the characters are rich and credible and brought to life by the expert narration skills of Mr Macphearson.

Hugh Fraser was magical as the narrator! And of course Agatha Christie is the greatest female murder mystery writer of our time!

Another good who-done-it

I am a big fan of Agatha Christie's novels. Hugh Fraser does a really good job of bringing the characters to life and telling this story with easy expertise.

One of my favourites.

Well narrated with great layers of moral questioning outside the basic plot. one of Christie's best.

Dull

Very slow and repetitive, too much irrelevant stuff. First time I've been bored by an Agatha Christie!

Good, but slightly predicatable

Unfortunately, while I love the Poirot books, I do feel as Christie got older her creative imagination did falter a little, and I was able to half guess the solution about half way through which is a cardinal sin for a detective novel; the reader should never feel more intelligent than Poirot! However, you may have noticed I said half guessed as there was still a little twist, and therefore I still rate this reasonably.

The Real Hammer!

Shortly before his death, Mickey Spillane told his wife Jane, "When I'm gone, there's going to be a treasure hunt around here. Take everything you find and give it to Max (Allan Collins)_he'll know what to do."

And boy, does he. Without a doubt, Kiss Her Goodbye is my favorite so far of the new Mike Hammer novels written by Spillane and Collins . In the introduction Collins explains that he wrote the book by combining, shaping, and expanding two of Spillane's partial manuscripts from the 1970s. The result is very impressive.

This one begins with Mike Hammer in Florida recuperating from wounds received in a shootout with some New York mob boys. His old friend Pat Chambers calls to let Hammer know that another old friend, an ex-cop Hammer considered his mentor during his own short time on the NYPD, has apparently committed suicide. Hammer heads north for the funeral, but in his gut he doesn't believe that his friend killed himself. Shortly after the funeral a young woman's body is discovered close enough to the funeral home to make Mike wonder if there may be some connection to what he feels is a faked suicide. As Hammer investigates he finds more questions than answers and begins to realize that there is some much larger game afoot behind the two deaths.

I think Collins made a wise decision to leave this book set in the time period it was intended for rather than updating it. Hammer plows his way through the 1970s, visiting a celebrity hotspot Disco molded after Studio 54 and fitting in about as well as you would expect. I grew up in the 70s, which may be one reason I like this book as much as I do.

Kiss Her Goodbye is interesting in that early on Hammer isn't quite the self confident mayhem machine readers are familiar with. The fallout from the almost fatal gun battle is that Hammer has lost weight and is dependent on pain killers. He wonders if he still has what it takes to get the job done as he did in the old days.

THE TAPES

Although I saw this film several years ago, the story was just as exciting. Anyone who likes puzzles will truly love the way this story comes together.Sometimes a little too erotic for the sqeemish, but I think it was necessary to bring out the true character of the main character. I highly recommend this one for those who enjoy, 'page-turners.'

Poorly Suited to Audio Format

A decent enough story, but the format--supposed excerpts from surveillance tapes--is a bad match to the audio format. The story is dated, it was written several decades ago, when new york was a war zone, and the idea of civilian surveillance was a fresh one. But it's hard to hold that against it. it's more just an issue of the awkwardness of all the steps of listening to someone reading written transcripts of someone supposedly speaking. I never thought i would write these words, but i almost think this one needs a *shudder* dramatic performance with an ensemble cast in order to get the authors story across.

IMHO, skip this one, and go right on to 'The First Deadly Sin' an excellent novel well performed.

This book, although listed as first in the series by audible, is not needed to understand the series.

The Anderson Tapes

I really enjoyed this book.The format of telling the story from from surveillance tape transcripts was an interesting twist.I also liked the variety of narrators. All The narration was excellent. I really liked Billy and Gerry Bingham Jr.. I also liked the guy with the Irish accent,he seemed so authentic-was he really Irish?. John Anderson was also very good! The story and plot kept me guessing. I would highly recommend this book for those who enjoy crime or suspense books.

After listening to the 1st and 2nd "Deadly Sin" it was like, this book was not as well written or organized. It was not terrible, just not as good as the "Deadly Sins" books. It was as if this was the first book Sanders had published.

Would you be willing to try another book from Lawrence Sanders? Why or why not?

Yes, as I said, I read this out of order. I will listen to the "Deadly Sins" series.

Tedious references

The narrative is tedious with all its references to very long sources. Example: tape 332.345dash 36dash 45nypd 487dash 14 January 1947 abbreviated for duplicated materials. This runs frequently throughout the narrative and nearly drove me crazy.
