    Publisher's Summary:
Decius Caecilius Metellus, this year's magistrate for cases involving foreigners, is living the good life in southern Italy, happy to be away from Rome, a city suffering war jitters over Caesar's impending actions. He thinks he is merely visiting one of the local sights when he takes a party to visit the Oracle of the Dead, a pre-Roman cult site located at the end of a tunnel dug beneath a temple of Apollo. He quickly learns that there is a bitter rivalry between the priests of Apollo and those of Hecate, who guard the oracle.
When the priests of Apollo are all killed, the countryside looks to explode in violence as Greeks, Romans, and native Italians of several conquered nations bring out old enmities. Decius is caught squarely in the middle, desperate to find a way out that will pacify the district and, incidentally, save his own skin.

    Great listen
Full of twists and turns. Ending not obvious. As always wonderfully evocative of Ancient Rome.
    fantastic
another really enjoyable tale. not as much fighting action in this one but still engaging and a captivating read. solid ending as always!
    More Confusing Than the Rest
This book was more convoluted and complicated than the rest in the series. Still good info on Rome and its surrounding provinces. But the legal mystery was a bit confusing to follow. The narration was superb as usual.
This is one of my favorites of the series
This is an awesome book set in campania. I love the characters and the humor. The narration is superb
"Laugh at me would they? We'll see about that."
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys unusual murder mysteries, historical fiction and/or has any interest in the lives and society of Ancient Rome. It is full of interesting little tidbits about beliefs and customs at the end of the Republic and the characterisations, especially that of Decius himself, are excellent.
Which character as performed by John Lee was your favourite?
John Lee is the voice of Decius Caecillius Metellus, the somewhat self indulgent, superior but humerous Praetor still travelling in southern Italy who is the teller of this story. And Lee fulfills this role to perfection.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
The intriguing deaths of the priests of Apollo - not only who did it but also how was it done? - combined with the fascinating insights into the Roman provincial lifestyles had me hanging on every word, resentful when I had to turn off my listening device.
    Any additional comments?
This series is almost at an end and I have enjoyed it immensely. John Lee has, for me, become Metellus the younger, married to a niece of Julius Caesar, as he rises through the ranks of Roman society at the end of the Republican era, solving mysteries along the way. I will miss my adventures with him and the dazzling mental pictures of Ancient Rome and it's life, good and bad, which were so vividly conjured up by John Maddox Roberts. I wish that the eBooks were also available with Amazon.co.uk

    Critic Reviews:
"You can tell Jack knows what it's like to live in the newspaper world... and he's proven that he also can write one heck of a murder mystery. With a clever plot and characters you badly want to succeed, he is on his way to becoming a new era James Patterson." (Josh Katzowitz, NFL writer for
    CBSSports.com and author of
Sid Gillman: Father of the Passing Game)
"Jack's storytelling feels as natural as James Patterson's, and the short-chapter setup is the literary answer to Lay's potato chips: you just want one more and before you know it, you've gone through the whole thing." (David Bashore,

    Intriguing story, Journalistic Narrator
Cross the Line was a pleasant listen, but not an exciting one. It was not a bad story, but I simply felt unexcited, which should not be the case for a thriller-type story.
Jack Patterson wrote this story well. It was clear he had done the research and had put a lot of thought into it. I thought the story flowed perfectly. The story let me down because of the dialogue between characters. It simply was unrealistic. A few of the characters often went off on tangents when talking to someone about things they had discovered along the way. These tangents, which clearly were dialogue and not narration, were too-journalistic. I know a few journalists, and even when I get them started on a topic they're writing about, they still don't *talk* like they write. These characters spoke more like they were reading an article, rather than sitting at a table drinking coffee. It just felt unnatural. There were also a few times the characters used rare synonym's to describe things when talking to someone (again not during narration), even during the intense scenes. Most people I know under would go for the easiest word to describe something when under pressure, not the unusual synonym. (i.e., blue vs. azure)
Perhaps all these faults would not have been so disappointing (or rather, distracting?) to me had I read the book vs listened. The narrator was not horrible, he had a pleasant voice. However, the book was simply read to me, not narrated. He lacked the vocal talents needed to pull off not only a book, but especially a thriller. There were no differences between male and female voices, and often I could not tell which character was talking because there was no difference in dialect. The non-American bad characters in this book had normal American voices (even in their home country), and were not frightening or manipulative at all. Another fault, there were two very intense parts of the book that simply require some voice excitement, and there was absolutely none.

    Publisher's Summary:
Written by one of the most gifted storytellers of our time, Death in Kenya is a wonderfully evocative mystery, reminiscent of the best classic novels of Agatha Christie.
When Victoria Caryll is offered a position at Flamingo, her aunt's family estate in Kenya's Rift Valley, she accepts - knowing full well that the move will give her a chance to see Eden DeBrett once again, the man she was previously engaged to. But she doesn't realize that coming to her aunt's home will introduce her to an unstable region still recovering from the bloody Mau Mau revolt, and to a household thrown into grief by a recent murder.
Distinguished by its mystery, romance, and exotic setting, Death in Kenya is as graceful as it is chilling - it is the beloved novel of one of our finest and most accomplished writers.
    Members Reviews:
    Brilliantly written suspense novel !
M.M. Kaye (who is also author of "The Far Pavillions, among many other other books) has written a tightly-woven tale of murder and suspicion. It takes place in Kenya, just after the Mau Mau rebellion, and tells the story of British colonials who struggle to hold their land and live their lives in the style they prefer, even while surrounded by servants whose loyalty they no longer fully trust.
Into this situation steps Victoria, a cousin and former fiancée of Eden DeBrett, grandson of Lady Emily DeBrett. Lady "Em" is obsessed by her wish to found a dynasty on her land (which she calls "Flamingo."). Victoria arrives from London just after a brutal murder occurs, but this had been only the culmination of some period of time during which eerie events had taken place, even leading the frightened family and servants to believe there existed a poltergeist in Flamingo.
The story unfolds with the introduction of the close friends of Lady Emily, who all become suspects for the murder (as are the servants, based on there having been the recent rebellion.) This book has been compared to the work of Agatha Christie, but at times I had fleeting senses of Henry James ("Turn of the Screw") and Joseph Conrad ("Heart of Darkness"). The mystery is excellent, but the building of strain through atmosphere and suspicions (those of the characters and also the reader) brings a haunting tension to the entire work.
I found this book to be gripping, and was only sorry that it ended. The narrator did a good job with the reading. Highly recommend!
    Great Mystery!
Great mystery by M M Kaye, and great reader in Robin Miles. And, I didn't guess the murderer.
    Good mystery but dated language.
I like most of MM Kaye's books and this one has a good mystery with lots of suspects and red herrings. For me, the book was marred by racial and ethnic slurs and negative stereotypes of Africans. I know the book dates from the mid-1950s but this language is jarring -- so be prepared. The narrator was very good.
Best of the audio "Death In ..." mysteries
MM Kaye's short mysteries are among my favorite books of all time. Sadly, the audio adaptations are virtually terrible. This one, though, is not. It's not great but neither is it awful. In relation to the others, it's 10 out of 10.

This latest installment in the Inspector Montalbano series finds Montalbano in search of his missing right-hand man.
Before leaving for vacation with Livia, Montalbano witnesses a seagull doing an odd dance on the beach outside his home - and then the bird suddenly drops dead. Stopping in at his office for a quick check before heading off, he notices that Fazio is nowhere to be found and soon learns that he was last seen on the docks, secretly working on a case. Montalbano sets out to find him and discovers that the seagulls dance of death may provide the key to understanding a macabre world of sadism, extortion, and murder.
    Members Reviews:
This is a pretty good read
The Dance of the Seagull is one of my favorites of the Montalbano movies. Mainly because of the Fazio abduction part of the plot and the wonderful scene where Salvo saves Fazio (oh dear. Is this a spoiler?). In the movie you know that they can't get rid of Fazio, so you just know he'll survive, but it is still tense and such a great release when they do rescue him. It is a fabulous scene and incidentally, shot in an incredibly beautiful location. The movie is one of the best of the series. At any rate, I tell you this because I come pre-disposed to liking this book. Granted, I have written a few harsh reviews lately because of how the Montalbano character is becoming less interesting and attractive to me. In the case of this book, although he's still pretty much a jerk, he is thankfully not whining too much about getting old. There's still some of that going on, and my tolerance for it hasn't changed, but it seems fairly under control. The goofy "Montalbano One" and "Two" have only minor appearances thank goodness. The plot is a good one (there's much more going on than the abduction) and it is complicated enough that my attention doesn't wander. There's one sort of odd bit near the end where Camilleri writes himself in (we've already learned that Montalbano the character in the book has become famous, and there's a fictionalized TV show about him (he's played by a bald actor - hahah)... so we get a fiction within a fiction), and so it all gets a little bizarre.
I keep wondering (have I written this before?) if Salvo is Camilleri's Mary Sue. Those of you who follow fan fiction will know what I mean. I suspect as the books have progressed that this is the case. Maybe it always has been. I saw an interview with Camilleri and found him rather annoying -- just like Montalbano.
What else? Well, Mimi gets to be a little clever despite constant belittling and haranguing by Salvo (poor Mimi does not fare as well in the books as he does in the movies). Livia doesn't really make any appearance whatsoever (which is okay by me as I think Camilleri has no idea what to do with her -- or possibly any female characters). Fazio spends most of his time in the hospital. So this book is pretty much all Salvo, all the time -- but a Salvo that isn't too pathetic and is in fact quite brilliant. And like I said, it could be worse. I give it four stars because I didn't hate it and enjoyed reading it.
    Always on Target
Camilleri's Montalbano is not a super hero; he is a very flawed human being. He suffers the same weaknesses the rest of humanity suffers.

    Couldn't put it down!
I heard about this series from the UUA World weekly e-newsletter I receive. The $.99 for the Kindle Edition turned out to be money very well spent.
The heroine of this series, Olympia Brown, is a college professor and a Unitarian Universalist minister. A Deadly Mission begins with Olympia hearing about the death of a of a student at her college. The girl had been involved with a group called the Boston Fellowship. Olympia had noticed the girl's behavior change, and her weight loss, and felt guilty that she hadn't tried to do more to reach out to her.
The start of the book is a little slow. The author spends some time establishing the world her characters live in, a small academic community in New England. We find out about her family and friends, etc. There's a long break between finding out about the girl's death and finding out any information about the Fellowship.
The book picked up the pace with the introduction of a new student at Olympia's college, Bethany Ruth. Bethany is a sweet girl from Oklahoma who comes from a very conservative Christian family. Olympia befriends the homesick girl and is alarmed for her when she finds out the bible study group she had encouraged her to attend led her to meeting members of the Boston Fellowship.
The story gets much more focused at this point, everything moves around how to save Bethany. Olympia's son tries to find out more and Olympia is threatened when the Fellowship finds out who he is. Olympia's priestly friend Father Jim discovers more deaths of college students in the area. These deaths all seemed like accidents at first, until further research reveals they all at the same cause of death, and were all members of the Fellowship who were trying to leave.
After having picked up and put down my Kindle several times over the past couple weeks, I got hooked in and stayed up til midnight last night to finish the story. The story is tragic in parts, exciting in others, and all too realistic. The hero characters (Olympia and her friends) have depth and history that drive them to help others, but they do this without immense wealth, magic or super powers. They are just intelligent people who care about others and have the courage to take action.
    Appealing Protagonist
Olympia Brown is an earthy, realistic, refreshingly unglamorous college professor and chaplain who is a delight to get to know. When one of her students dies in what is deemed an accident, Olympia is suspicious because the student belonged to a mysterious religious group. When other students who belong to the group also die accidentally, Olympia and her priest friend Jim begin to investigate.

    Best Series on Audible
This volume, probably the best in a stellar series that just keeps getting better with each installment, made me realize just how great the authors achievement is, and how much I am going to miss the series when I finally reach the end of it. With only a few volumes left, apparently, that day is coming soon. What will I do when that day finally comes? Theres NO other mystery/detective series Ive found with the quality of the writing consistently this high, the pacing perfect, with each volume able to stand alone as its own self-contained novel, characters so well-drawn that you miss them when theyre gone, and action so intense that you can absolutely COUNT on being sucked into the story in the VERY FIRST CHAPTER. Another unique feature of the series is the way it effortlessly blends medical mystery and police procedural by allowing paramedics to be central characters in each novel, and bringing in detective Ella Marconi, her partner Murray Shakespeare, and other investigators only AFTER the central mystery has been established. And I love how theres almost always a sub-theme, or more than one, woven throughout the background of the various entwined mysteries. In this volume, the theme of troubled romance was highly entertaining, and the theme of BAD BOSSES was riveting. Anyone whos ever had a bad supervisor or manager will instantly relate to Ellas mounting fury and frustration as new director Langley repeatedly and almost willfully thwarts her investigative instincts and forces her to go outside the bounds of the law and established procedure to track down the real killer. Add to all this a performance by the great Caroline Lee and you have entertainment which, as my husband noted, is interesting even to people like him who havent been following the story closely but happen to overhear only random, isolated passages here and there. The only flaw in an otherwise perfect book is the way the ending requires one or too too-tidy coincidences, but that is true of most mysteries, in my experience. Grade: A

Talking, sentient cats begin new investigation
In Shirley Rousseau Murphys third Joe Grey and Dulcie book, we find our human friends Wilma still happy at the library, Clyde fixing cars. Wilmas niece Charlie has been evicted and is overflowing with work for her fix it/clean it business with not enough employees to do the jobs, making her day longer and longer.
They are also watching their felines -- Joe Grey, owned by bachelor Clyde Damon, and Dulcie, owned by Wilma Getz -- beginning to follow a new investigation. The new skills of speech and sentience they acquired not even a year before enable them to participate in various crime investigations without revealing themselves. We are privy to their private conversations regarding a plain, old woman who is successfully cat-burgling a variety of homes. We hear the burglars thoughts that she doesnt need the items she steals nor the money she gets fencing the items; she does it all for the thrill. Shes already burgled towns south, so who is she?
Joe is tracking the cat burglar when Clyde brings up his participation in the Pet-a-Pet program at the local senior home. Two afternoons a week a dozen or so pets gather with their owners and provide some pet therapy for residents of Casa Capri. Clyde finds out that it is Dulcie and Wilma who already participate that push Joe to join them. At the first visit a very young teenager named Dillon brings up her attempts to visit her friend Jane who was a resident in the home but then apparently had a stroke which necessitated her move to the medical wing where no visitors are allowed. However, with no family, Dillon says she should be allowed to visit or at least to have a letter delivered. The answer was always no.
Then one day an obscure cousin of Janes wants to visit. The nurses bring belongings and quilts and things youd find in a typical room into the room Jane used to live in but which has remained empty since her stroke. Best foot forward in the appearances to the families. During this visit, Dillon is at Casa Capri and sees a laptop writing desk put into Janes closet. Dillon recognizes that and sneaks into the room when they remove the patient (is it even Jane?) to take back to the medical wing. Inside the desk Dillon finds a doll which Jane had made. She takes the doll to another resident who is asking about Jane. They could feel a lump under the dolls dress which is a ragged line of stitching, not Janes beautiful work. Inside the doll under those sloppy stitches is a note from Jane to her friend confirming their fears; Jane had been moved against her will and essentially held prisoner in the medical wing.

James Grippando is my favourite author; I look forward to every book he writes (the way between books is just too long) but this is not his best. But still I'm looking forward to the next installment of the Swytech series
    Disappointing
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
No. Did not hold my attention.
What was most disappointing about James Grippandos story?
I bought this recording without knowing any details about story. That is because I have read all of the other Swyteck books & they are great! I was initially disappointed when I realized this was going to be a rehash of the Casey Anthony case but I put that aside, confident that Grippando would add a twist that would make it worth it. Unfortunately, that did not happen. Frankly, I was bored. The story moved excruciatingly slowly, was slightly illogical and I found that at certain points in the story I forgot who the different players were - this is VERY unusual for a Grippando book.
    Any additional comments?
I am still a huge Swyteck fan but I can not recommend this one.
    Starts a little slowly...
...but gets interesting quickly. Jack Zwytek can find more trouble than most other characters combined, and has enough foibles to make him interesting and human. I'll be looking for the next book to come along to see what else can happen. Worth the credit.
