One of the Best

I have read all of the Amos Walker novels and short stories. I consider them works of art, but some better than others. I have yet to be disappointed in any Amos Walker novel or short story. For me, the best parts of this novel were Walker' s session with the psychiatrist and Chapter 22. I was not totally happy with the ending. Of course, I cannot explain why. I will say that it was a surprise and let it go with that. I hope Amos Walker goes on for years to come. He and his creator are classics.

Another page turner

It is a mystery almost as good as those written by Estleman why this series does not garner the attention of those written by Sandford, Connelley, etc. Hard boiled detective, compelling prose, interesting plots and a portrait of Detroit better than any documentary are the hallmarks of each book in this series. Read them all, you will not be sorry.

I really enjoyed this, there was lots of amazing points, and I couldn't stop thinking about the book when I wasn't listening to it

Loved it but ending was a copout

Smart people may be a little frustrated with the hapless simpleton of a protagonist, though that is intentional I think. I personally disliked the ending. It left several loose ends and left me with a feeling of anticlimax. I felt like the author was under pressure to finish the book, and should have taken the extra time to write the last 5 hours of the book rather than slap together an ending. That being said, the book overall was great fun and thought provoking. The political, social, and economic commentary was educational and kept me guessing whether the author had a political agenda (which is good). There were a couple of miscalculations (compound interest, historical currency conversions), but they didn't get in the way of the narrative. Anyway I will definitely be reading everything else available from this author.

Way too long

I like the creativity of this author but this story could have made all of its essential points at half the length.

The other critics are right about it going a bit off the rails in the last third. it didn't help that the protagonist was not as smart as I wanted him to be. everything in the book was well telegraphed and there were no surprises. I could never have finished it if the narration hadn't been so good.

Great Premise Terrible Execution

I listened to the first few chapters. then I couldn't bare anymore of the completey clichéd and totally uninspired writing. I skipped to the last chapter just to get a feel if I would be missing anything.

unless you are entertained by the mundane and ordinary, avoid this waste of time.

...I decided to finish the book. I now give it 2 stars instead of one. it's basically a boring and tedious " world economy for dummies" text book poorly disguised as a story. I give it one more star upon completion because even though it is obviously aimed at the totally clueless. I still found a small handful of inspiration and interesting realizations. but these do not excuse tha mundane and downright irritating story line

I loved the nuanced voice and the suspenseful interpretation of the story by Shiromi Arsenio. The performance was riveting to listen to.

Structured by time and place, part I of TAKE NO MORE occurs Friday to Sunday in London; The rest occur in Florence. Part II occurs six days earlier; part III four days later; part IV six days earlier; part V four days later. So right away you realize how the author goes back and forth in time, challenging you to piece this puzzle together.

When the protagonist, James Blake, finds his wife murdered, he starts piecing together her work for a dangerous Italian family. For him, this is both an intellectual and an emotional challenge. As an art conservator, she was hoping to find a lost paintings, `Leda and the Swan' which may have been painted over to save it from destruction.

Carefully researched, the story is anchored in real facts in art history (Michaelangelos Leda and the Swan is missing.) From these details, which grant authenticity to the writing, the author has cast a wide web of imagination. In composing this story, Seb Kirby adds to the magic of the wonderful words and stories he discovered in the treasure trove of books in his grandfathers mobile lending library.

The book deserved better

This book is not uninteresting. The story line is pretty well thought out and the characters are , if not well fleshed out, at least believable. However the reader is so bad that if she is not someones daughter or sister there is no excuse to use her. God help the poor author, maybe she is a undercover spy sent to sink him.

A great story, beautifully told

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this audiobook. I have read the ebook and all great stories bear revisiting. I like the fact that the book is unabridged. Seb Kirby is a master at writing emotion without overdoing it. He can make you feel the full jolt under the heart from bereavement, the lack of purpose felt by those who experience it, but he is never soppy about it. He can also express utter joy in a way many authors would love to be able to do. I really enjoy his writing style.

The reading was sensitive and well modulated. It conveyed the feelings without over-acting. Initially I found that having a woman reading what is a first person story told by a man was a little disconcerting but it's really just getting used to that fact that someone's telling you the story.

What about Shiromi Arserios performance did you like?

I loved the calm style of narration which allows the reader to feel the sudden shocks of the story without signposting them beforehand.

Catherine Coulter did it again !

Power Play is by Catherine Coulter. It is an FBI Thriller. It takes place mainly in Washington DC and Chevy Chase, Maryland. The characters are realistic and described well. The plot is intereting as there are actually three main problems to be solved. Catherine does an excellent job of switching between plots.

Natalie Black is the US Ambassador to Great Britain. Her fiancé, George, was found in his car at the end of a cliff. It was questionable as to whether it was a suicide or an accidental death. An email began circulating that was from Natalie Black to George breaking their engagement. A car nearly runs her off a cliff and she finally decides to come home. She has a chilly reception on arriving at home. Everyone thinks she caused George to commit suicide. At home, she is nearly run over by a car as she jogs and her car was shot up as she drove to attend an occasion. Who is trying to kill her? Why?

Perry Black is Natalieâs daughter and a sportswriter with her own blog. She tries to help her mother but finds herself the victim in a shooting, graffiti warnings, and having her Harley smashed. Who is doing this to her? Is it related to her mother?

Miami, the Dark Side

What made the experience of listening to Miami, It's Murder the most enjoyable?

Assuming some of the facts stated are true, there is something to learn from the Cuban side of Miami.

What aspect of Erin Bennetts performance would you have changed?

All of it. She needs to become some of the characters. If there is no difference in the performance how can interest be peaked if it's read flatly. Sometimes it is read to slowly and ends up dragging a bit. Not a fast paced reading. Actually mot even medium. Doesn't really get out of second gear.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I would say I cried because I bought the first three books in this series thinking it would be the great experience I had when I read them so many years ago, but the first wasn't very good in the series, this one isn't that much better, a little. Well, I hope the next one is better. Maybe a difference more expressive reader.

It's like catching up with old friends!

It was so enjoyable to catch up with Harry, Fair, Susan and of course the animals. I love knowing what the animals are thinking. Wish I could know at my house!

It's winter in Albermarle county. Time to hand out Christmas boxes to those who need them. Harry and friends encounter old teachers and learn a bit more about them. You will become engrossed with what is going on early on and be disappointed the story ends and you will have to wait for the next one!

This is a well laid out story. It weave two sets of murders together in an exciting and fun way.

A Tedious, Boring Disappointment

Would you try another book from Mark Billingham and/or Mark Billingham?

Yes, because I know all his other books and this comes nowhere near his usual standard.

What could Mark Billingham have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

He could have written a story which held a reader's interest and did not make him regret having chosen this book. Tom Thorne has been transformed into a vapid character with none of his usual energy, daring, humour and psychological depth. He is a cardboard, one-dimensional ordinary man - not even a detective. The interaction with his colleagues does nothing to bring either him or them to life. There is a flatness about the whole book. The ending which should be exciting does nothing to rouse interest.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

He did not use his voice to inject interest or lift a reader's attention in the story but spoke quickly in a voice which could on occasions almost become a monotone.

You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

For me, it is forgettable.

Excellent Book Spoilt by Drab Narration.

Mark Billingham always delivers high quality, enjoyable fiction but he is not a good narrator.

This could have been an outstanding listen but was severely diminished by drab lack lustre narration by the author.

Excellent plot and though still enjoyable the monotonous drone of the reader really spoilt this for me. Next time use someone good like Paul Thornley.

Slow and ponderous

This wasn't up to his usual high standard. I have really enjoyed all of this authors previous work.

The author usually keeps the tension high and the action coming. The very end was the only time this book got going for me.

Don't ever narrate your own books!

plenty of action but it all comes at the end

this book lasts for just over nine and a half hours and the first 9 hours are more like a travel book describing Bardsey island and the trip there than a crime novel. I kept listening as I was sure that something might happen soon.

Really good mystery. Great Narration by Tanya Eby!

This story was really good. I enjoyed the mystery that kept me guessing the whole way through, all the way to the end. I liked Elizabeth for the most part, she did do a couple stupid things but the rest of the story made up for it.

I don't want to say too much to give a way the mystery. But this was a good one. So just know if you want read\listen to something to keep you guessing this is one. Things were constantly happening and there was lots of dialogue throughout the entire book. There is no sex in the story.

As for the narration, it was great. I am a Tanya Eby fan. The men sound like men and everyone gets their own distinct voice.

In the top ten, I read it in one evening.

Absolutely, the mother having to go from person, and what happens as as a result of it.

Have you listened to any of Tanya Ebys other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, but she did a great job. Needs a little work with her male characters.They all started to sound the same.

Excellent book, from beginning to end! Couldn't put it down, started at 6:00 pm ended at 5:00 am. (I'm an immersion reader.)

Nearly perfect..

This book catches your attention from the very beginning, with teachers sitting around talking about a child molester who just moved into their neighborhood, and one teacher trying to figure out a way to murder him. And then, with a phone call to Elizabeth/Sarah the story really gets going.
