Would you consider the audio edition of China Trade to be better than the print version?
No, I read this story years ago and listened this time. The story caused me to recommend this book the audio helped me go through it quickly a second time
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
the plot was a fat moving story enlivened by the banter between two young American detectives,
What about Christine Marshalls performance did you like?
Like the best readers of audio books she was able to enrich her characters with changes in presentation that kept them distinct to the lustenng ear
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I laughed the first time in I read it I smiled a few times in this hearing. It is a first novel portraying young people. In the other books in the series the fun is always there but the characters have matured
    Fun Read
Where does China Trade rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Somewhere in the top third. I will read another by this author, it is not brilliant but dependably entertaining which is what I am looking for with Audible.
What did you like best about this story?
A view into another world, the inclusion of Chinese art and the characters were interesting.
Which character as performed by Christine Marshall was your favorite?
All the characters were performed well. Kirsten Potter is my favorite reader, she deserves another star for her performances. Christine Marshall is very good.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I find it hard to sit still that long except on long car rides where Audible is a MUST!

    Members Reviews:
Wonderful novel which is so well narrated
Loved this novel, like most I have read by this very talented author. This one was superbly narrated by Tom Cotcher. I loved the fact that the book, set in Fife where I grew up, was narrated by a Scot. Seemed to make the story all the more believable for me. Loved at the suspense and mystery that this novel creates and, surprisingly, I didn't see the final twist coming which improved this novels enjoyment for me. I have downloaded many of Val McDermid's novels, and almost all I have very much enjoyed. A recommended read.
    A solid listen.
I really enjoyed this book. The narrator has a lovely tone and it works well with the story. Lots of twists to keep you interested.
    Slow start
Great book. Thought the beginning was a bit strange with only 4 characters but second half if book was fabulous and kept me gripped.
    Absorbing story with good characters
Listening in the kitchen for an hour a day, I gradually got absorbed into the story, the lives and the places. There were several distinct characters, but not too many to become overwhelming. The storyline twists and turns and is ambushed by sudden new events. The narrator was perfect - different voices for different characters. Words quite distinct with a lovely Scottish accent. I looked forward to my listening time each day. I am a new convert to Val McDermid.
    Well written, great ending
Would you listen to The Distant Echo again? Why?
I really enjoyed The Distant Echo. The story was interesting and kept me listening late into the night, well past my bedtime! I don't typically re-read (or listen again) to my books, but there would be nothing to keep me from it. I really enjoyed it! The twisted ending blew my socks off!
What did you like best about this story?
The development of the characters from young men in university to grown men with careers, wives, and children. The end of the story was shocking to me, and it's hard to catch me out. I usually have the "whodunit" figured out by the conclusion. I didn't with this book!
What about Tom Cotchers performance did you like?
His accent. Otherwise, I didn't really enjoy his performance. I thought his various voices of the main characters were strange--especially Rev."Weird."
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No, neither. It just kept me on the edge of my seat.
    Any additional comments?
I'm going for the next book in the series now.

Same great characters, not so great story
What did you like best about A Finely Knit Murder? What did you like least?
I enjoyed listening to the next chapter in one of my favorite series. It's almost like the characters are my own family and friends now.
On the other hand, the story seems far more drawn out than those in the past, too much filler without as much substance.
Would you recommend A Finely Knit Murder to your friends? Why or why not?
I would recommend the book if you have read the reast of the series.
    Wonderful Storyy
Just love the Seaside Knitters series. Another good story. Can't wait for the next story.

    This is O'Brien's best yet!
What about Jonathan Yens performance did you like?
Jonathan Yen gave an excellent performance. His tones, inflections, cadence and gravity hit the mark every step of the way.
    Any additional comments?
This was Kevin O'Brien's best book to date. The book has two thriller plots going on simultaneously, each could have been a book in itself but together - WOW! When I first read the short description of this book I thought it sounded kind of contrived and wasn't sure this was going to work. Why in the world would a young woman working for a caterer play junior detective? This is a young single mother who moved to a new town, new job, people getting brutally murdered all around her - HELLO? Why would she stay? On top of that there is a looney who wants to pulverize her and take her young son in her home town looking for her. Next thing you know her face is on TV and still she stays. I kept thinking it can't work but to my surprise it did. Sorry I can't tell how or it would ruin the story so all I can say is GET THE BOOK! You won't regret it. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. If you found this review helpful please indicate so. Thank You.
    Riveting!!!
A great story consisting of characters you will love hate and be unsure of right to the end with intersecting storylines and unexpected twists leading to a heartfelt finish. The first of Kevin O'Brien's books i've read but definitely not my last
    Not very good.
I think I heard the word gape used at least 10 times in the first 4 hours of the book, and it didn't even get into what was described. Very disappointed in the writing. The narration was not too bad but I'm returning this snoozer of a book.
    SLOW
Would you try another book from Kevin O'Brien and/or Jonathan Yen?
    NO
What do you think your next listen will be?
I am listening to Never Die Alone
How did the narrator detract from the book?
    He was fine
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
    not really
    Any additional comments?
Just really slow - i quit listening after Chapter 4
    and this got published????
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
    nothing
What was most disappointing about Kevin O'Briens story?
    everything
    Which scene was your favorite?
    the last one
What character would you cut from No One Needs to Know?
    all of them
    Any additional comments?
only the fact that i was doing major house cleaning kept me listening to this... holy crap... this is right up there with the book former vice presidents wife marilyn quayle wrote... and i didn't think that could happen

    Great follow up
What did you love best about Sins of the Father?
It answered most of the questions from the first one.
What other book might you compare Sins of the Father to and why?
I don't think I've come across anything similar to it that isn't in this series.
What does Melissa Redmond bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
The story came alive. She animated the action
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Neither, but I did feel sad for the victims, and for Diggs.
    Any additional comments?
I love this story. It was well written, and I was sucked in from the very beginning. The suspense was on point, and the action and back story was riveting.I thought it had a great ending. I was satisfied.
Good pace. Engaging story and characters.
I really enjoyed this book. The characters were well fleshed out and the story moved at a good pace, giving enough to keep me interested but not so much that I figured everything out and got bored. I'm definitely interested in the third book in this series.
I recieved a free copy of this audiobook from the author.
If Only Someone Else Had Narrated
Would you consider the audio edition of Sins of the Father to be better than the print version?
I read the first book on my Kindle.I didn't read the print version this time around and I really wish I had now. The narration was not impressive.
What did you like best about this story?
Fast paced. Didn't linger on the all the sexual stuff.
What didnt you like about Melissa Redmonds performance?
It was so incredibly flat. No inflection. Hardly any variations on character voices. I really had to grit my teeth and listen to it to the end. I had really hoped they'd found someone else to narrate the 3rd book, but no such luck. I will have to power through that one as well. Hopefully the male counterpart will offset it.
Honestly, I put more effort in when I read aloud to my 4 year old.
Better Than Book 1 BUT narrator ruins it.
Book 2 was better than the first book by far. The problem AGAIN is the NARRATION. Terrible narration ruins good stories. Jen Blood has to know this.

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
From best-selling author Mike Lawson comes the latest installment in the award-winning Joe DeMarco series.
As a fixer for influential congressman John Mahoney in Washington, DC, Joe DeMarco has found himself in plenty of unexpected and dangerous situations. In House Rivals, DeMarco is taken further out of his element than ever before, sent to North Dakota to protect a passionate but naïve 22-year-old blogger who has put herself in harm's way.
The young woman is Sarah Johnson, whose grandfather saved Mahoney's life in Vietnam. For the past two years, Sarah has been on a relentless crusade against a billionaire oil tycoon who has profited handsomely from the natural gas boom in the Dakotas and who she believes has been bribing small-time politicians and judges to keep things in his favor. Though she has no hard evidence against the man, Sarah has been assaulted and received death threats for her meddling. DeMarco, given his years of experience bending the rules in DC, suspects that a middleman like himself is pulling strings for the tycoon. But as DeMarco tries to identify his adversaries, the situation turns unexpectedly violent, and DeMarco finds himself in a battle of wits against two ruthless problem solvers who will stop at nothing to win.

Suspense Murder & Humor - That's Joe DeMarco!
Have you listened to any of Joe Barretts other performances before? How does this one compare?
Joe Barrett is the voice of Joe DeMarco! As always he gave a Stellar performance! He narrates so well you would think he knows what the author was thinking when he wrote it as he seems to get all the right inflections at the right time. I am a definitely fan.
    Any additional comments?
I love the Joe DeMarco series and have been looking so forward to this book coming out. My only gripe is that I thought it was too short. After the last book which was the BEST, this one did not measure up. I missed Emma and thought some details about Joe were left out. However if read as a stand alone without the previous books to compare it to I thought it was really a very good story. One thing I really enjoy about Mike Lawson's writing is how he intertwines DeMarco's nuances and nuisances into the story line to add real life humor. At the beginning of the book Joe has a mouse problem, he deals with an exterminator and tells him to do what ever needs to be done. You don't hear about the problem again until the end but it will leave you hysterical laughing. Murphy must be Joe's close relative but I like that he pretty much comes out of his situations unscathed. I sincerely hope Mike Lawson is writing another and if you're reading this could you make it longer please?
    HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
If you found this review helpful please indicate so.
    another great installment
I have listened to all of the Joe DeMarco stories and they have all been good. This one was very good. I like seeing Joe do some of his own maneuvering -- He did not have any of the crazy friends to help him. And of course he was up to the challenge
I did have a lot of technical trouble with the book. It kept cutting out and I was missing parts of the book. I finally called audible - should have done it right away. They helped me beyond the help on the website. Got it fixed. No trouble after that. -- they were very quick and helpful
    worth a credit.

    Love this character
D.D. VanDyke has created an appealing first-person narrator expertly performed by the narrator. Actually, the story feels real because of the all the characters and how they're performed, more than the plot. A fun way to spend an hour on the road but probably not worth spending a credit on. Although, there is that narration, LOL. Can't get enough of this narrator reading Cal's thought process but would have liked a longer and more complicated plot. I'm getting ready to listen to the next novel in the series and hoping that it's got more satisfying storyline.

Sometime in the last few books the narrator gave up giving Jessica any kind of Maine accent. Angela Lansbury never used much of one, but this narrator started out using one. I sort of miss it as it made the books unique to listen to.
