Today they seem to be boring old men, telling wild stories to anyone who will listen, but once they were the hottest pilots in the Pacific--men who could fly anything, anywhere, any time. And they've just been handed the chance to end their lives as millionaires.
A dying comrade has a secret he doesn't want to take to the grave....He knows where to find a cache of old Japanese air force planes--not wrecks lying all over the floor of some jungle, but planes in pristine condition, properly moth-balled and stored before the end of the war.

Almost all character developement and little else...
I had high hopes for this book when I read about it but the 400 pages was almost all repetitious character development for characters you just didn't feel would do what they did, especially the Benteen character. The ONLY action in the book takes place in less than about 10 pages. In short, a huge buildup for an ending you could see halfway around the world. The "Scooby Doo" ending sure didn't help, either.
if you like the concept of old vets doing neat stuff with WW2 planes in a modern context, let me suggest "Gray Eagles" by Duane Unkefer instead. This book was just a slog through the buildup and the ending an afterthought. I really got the impression has was paid to write a book 400 pages long and realized he needed to slap an ending onto the end once had got past 375.
    great escapism
Dean Ing writes the same basic story over and over. Which is not to say he is a one trick pony. Each different version is both remarkable for its quality and its attention to detail.
The essential story is someone is forced out of a comfortable place and forced to flee. Sometimes there is a valuable McGuffin involved. This time the threat is a an avaricious son in law who wants to have a wealthy aircraft dealer declared alzheimer's incompetent so he can steal his business and the investment assets. The McGuffin is a collection of Japanese aircraft stored on a remote island in the Japanse colonial possessions in the South Pacific: A Betty bomber, and a collection of Zeros. The goal is to take away the Japanese aircraft from the island without the natives getting wind of the plot.
The story is very well told. As long as you don't think too closely over some of the details it is very enjoyable. If you look too closely at some of the plot points you loose some of the joy. As long as you read it strait through and don't stop to argue it is great.
    Very enjoyable reading!
I got a real kick out of this book, and so did my son, to whom I lent my copy. It is written with a dry sense of humor that delighted me. Very fun reading! I actually started reading this book in a condo I rented in the Cayman Islands, but couldn't finish it before we left (it belonged to the condo), so when I got home I looked for it on Amazon because I wanted to finish it. I am sure I will come back to it again every few years.
    Great Book
If you like stories about WW II fighter pilots and a bit about the airplanes they flew and others they attempted to shoot down, you will enjoy this story. Puts you in their world and it is easy to become a part of the group.
    Mildly Entertaining
The book is mildly entertaining, however, quite wordy. The story could have been better told in about half the words.

All in all, though, it's nothing Henry Lightstone can't handle.

    Entertaining and Educational
It took me a little while to get into this book. The multiple character development and technical details tended to slow the story. But once the foundation was laid, the story flowed and was fascinating. The characters are wonderful. Ken Goddard is a forensic scientist (my former profession) and he is true to the accuracy of forensic science, unlike TV shows like CSI and NCIS. Although this book was not quite as good as The Alchemist and Balefire, it is a good read and will hold your attention once you get into it. I especially liked the panther who took an interest in the main character and the self-proclaimed witch who kept the panther as a pet.
    Double and triple twists
Ken Goddard is one of my favorite authors and Henry Lightstone one of his best characters. This book has devious ins and outs as well as great character development with bad guys you just LOVE to hate. Read it and enjoy
    A good story
A good story, well told, as usual.

Be careful what you wish for!
Where does Specific Impulse rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Top 25 percentile.Well crafted journey, performed very well with enough twists and turns to keep the listener engaged with the story.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Specific Impulse?
The entire "conclusion" is relatively drama filled and moves forward in a manner that is unavoidably compelling.
What does Dayna Steele bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Yes, she is excellent at owning the characterrs, and keeping them clearly differentiated. I feel this is exactly the type of book that lends itself to an audio format, versus print.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Made me research the concepts, that is for sure.
    Any additional comments?
This is a keeper, and a good example of a production I downloaded purely on recommendations from other listeners. Surely a lesson there! Enjoy.

What did you like most about The Whitechapel Conspiracy?
    Interesting and well researched

    Characterisation of Pitt
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The treatment of the Jewish community in London
    Any additional comments?
    An excellent read.
    A Good Story
This isn't my favourite book in the Thomas Pitt series, but it's a good story and it was very well read by Terence Hardiman. I like Anne Perry books but unfortunately many of the Anne Perry books on Audible are read by Deidra Whelan and she reads so badly that they are impossible to listen to. I had read this book before but it was worth buying it again because Terence Hardiman read it so well.

    Title: Bad Trip South

    Language: English
    Release date: 01-04-13
    Publisher: BILLIE SUE MOSIMAN
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 3 votes
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense
    Publisher's Summary:
The family is on a much needed vacation. A policeman, his teacher wife, and their daughter, Emily, a little girl with a preternatural gift, need a break. Emily's parents aren't getting along, but then they hardly ever did these days.
When the family stops for a tour into the Longhorn Caverns, they have no idea something is about to happen to change their lives. Waiting for them are a young couple on the run. One is, Crow, an escaped convict. The other is his girlfriend, Heddy, who helped him escape and will do anything to keep him free. They're got some money waiting for them down south, if only they can get there.
Once the family exits the caves, they are kidnapped, and now they're all on the run. It's going to be a very Bad Trip South.
    Critic Reviews:
"Bad Trip hardly does justice to the hellish journey undertaken by the Anderson family in this gripping thriller. Leaving their North Carolina home to visit Long Horn Caverns outside of St. Louis, police officer Jay Anderson, wife Carrie, and 10-year-old daughter Emily are attempting to rebuild familial bonds. Consumed by job-related stress, Jay has taken to beating Carrie. Emily, who has a telepathic ability, is confused and frightened by her parents' angry thoughts. When escaped convict Crow and his amoral girlfriend, Heddy, kidnap the family to provide cover for their escape to Mexico, it looks as though things are going from bad to worse for the beleaguered Andersons. Told partially through Emily's narration to a police psychologist and partially through the viewpoints of the convicts, Mosiman's story is ugly and violent - and utterly compelling. Perhaps most disturbing is Jay's slow but steady move to the dark side, as he begins to fall for Heddy's dangerous allure. Top-notch suspense for mature readers." (Jenny McLarin, Booklist)
    Members Reviews:
    Wonderfully Twisted.
One of Mosiman's best tales brought to life through the pipes of Ben Maclaine. A seriously gut wrenching tale narrated by the perfect voice. Listened to it twice so far, and it still creeps me out.

He's smitten with this fluffy young romantic who he sees as kryptonite to his career and well-being.

    Members Reviews:
Throwbacks? So awful, I want to Throw it Back!
There is very little to like about this book. The plot is improbable and the narrator is stilted and detracts from the story to the point where I just gave up. Worth a credit? No. I'm not even sure it is worth buying the book via Kindle to get this at what I thought was a bargain price of $1.99. Very disappointing.
    What Romance?
What disappointed you about The Throwbacks?
Grace calling David "Batman" and her his "Robin". It is a bit much. Her friend got kidnapped and she can't stand sitting around not knowing so she takes off to go save her friend at a warehouse with no weapons except a safety pin from her shirt to unlock the door. Mind you the FBI's and other law enforcement etc. is at the scene getting ready to rescue the hostage.
Has The Throwbacks turned you off from other books in this genre?
    No, just Stephanie Queen
What didnt you like about Meghan Lewiss performance?
She a new narrator. She needs to practice different voices so people can tell who's talking
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Yes, help put me to sleep when I had the Flu a few days ago.
    Any additional comments?
Don't waste your one credit on this book. I didn't give this a 1 star because I did laugh at the "WTF" moments a few time during the book. It's PG if you're wondering. The romance between Grace and David is very little and feels fake. He's 50, and she's 30 with daddy issues.
    Too many pauses
I would have enjoyed this story more if the narration had been more fluid. I am not sure if the pauses (particularly for the female characters) were meant to be choices in characterization, but it was far too stilted and annoying.
On the positive side, I really enjoyed the variation of accents. That was really well done.
    The story was ok.

    I MICROWAVE LIKE CRAZY
This is the most stilted thing I have listened to since, first grade with Dick, Jane, Sally, Spot and that damn Ball.
I have been in and around trucking for almost 40 years and I can say Ing gets it correct when he talks about the trucking industry. To combine Science Fiction and truck driving sounded like the ultimate to me. Alas, the writing of everything else is not good. I really wanted to like this, but after the prequel and first chapter, it became a chore to listen to. The Narrator is also bad, he sounds like he should be reading Dick And Jane.

    TERRIBLE!
Seriously?? The US President comes to their party?? Very trite, boring and unrealistic. Felt like I was reading a fairy tale. If you really like to read and enjoy good literature, don't waste your time on this ridiculous series that consistently uses old and tired cliches. A waste of $3.82 and way over priced at that!
    Five Stars
Great hated for it to end.

I love reading about the Colton family and anxiously await future books about the family. As usual, there was an even mixture of romance and intrigue that made reading so much Moe enjoyable.
