    Great book
    Montana Midwife
I enjoyed this book. It was flowing with descriptions but lacked intensity. I feel that it should have been developed more fully to emphasize parts of action and add more suspense.
    Five Stars
    Nice
    What the Heck
I pre-ordered this book and I pretty much think the author is a decent writer but I tell you the whole time I was reading this book I kept thinking to myself WHAT THE HECK!!! I mean this was a waste of my time. I almost deleted it from my device but since I spent the money on the book I figured I will keep it on there to remind myself to not believe everything you read. This is totally my opinion but the book was not good at all. I did not follow it at all. It made no sense whatsoever. It has a few surprises in the book but it just was not able to helpt the book at all. Don't waste your time is my opinion.

Enjoyable but narrator could do better
Excellent story line (as always with Michael Innes) slightly spoilt by mispronunciation of several (fairly common) words by the narrator and narration not quite up to the standards set by Matt Addis

A few days guarding Spences beautiful wife should be easy work, but Quinns old business is about to catch up with him, and he quickly finds that the Garden State can be even more dangerous than the streets of New York City.

Great story marred by an average performance
I enjoyed Mike Mayo's first detective novel, set against the backdrop of the Lindbergh kidnapping and U.S. prohibition era crime, very much. The world Mike creates is rich and textured and felt very real.
I first came to know Mike Mayo as a movie critic and his love of and expertise in movie history made this book particularly enjoyable. Mike's narrative and my imagination combined to create a world that was a softer sort of Dark City without The Strangers and I look forward to reading the other two novels in the series, either in audio format or in traditional paperback should it take a while for them to appear in audio format.
My biggest criticism would be the performance, which for the main character of Jimmy The Stick, I think the voice was fine most of the time but it was harder to distinguish other characters and at times the reading struck me as flat and uninteresting. Not a terrible performance but lacking inspiration.
If you are a person that can overlook an lackluster performance, and enjoy the mystery genre, there is much here to like and to look forward to.

    Funny, Poignant, Gripping!
Everything I look for in a modern mystery, with the involvement of the police and the amateur sleuth, who always solves the crime no matter how obscure the clues. Each one individual but all with the same main characters. Lots of intelligent, subtle humour. Can't wait for the next book in the Maxwell's series.
a llittle bit of america comes to leighford.

    Fantastic writing and narration
I first read Magic Mirror a few years ago, I remembered that I enjoyed it and that I gave it 5 stars but for whatever reason, its just sat on my bookshelf, its not a book I have re-read. After just finishing the audiobook, my first instinct is to kick myself, why has it taken so long to go back to such a great story? Listening to it, I couldnt help but notice the growth in author, Sean Ellis having read most of his work, you can see how he has improved, but that doesnt mean my rating has changed at all, because it hasnt, it is definitely a 5 star read, I just noticed the progression, which can only be taken as a positive, in my mind at least.
Magic Mirror has a hint of the paranormal, some action and a lot of mystery. Mix in some fantastic characters and that about sums up the book, I could say more, but it would be very difficult to do so without including spoilers and I would hate to give anything away, that would take away from your enjoyment when you read it, go ahead and buy it now, you wont be sorry.
I have never listened to anything narrated by James Conlan before so this was a new experience for me, I was very impressed, I had no difficulty following the story and it was very obvious when a character changed. I thought the action was narrated particularly well, at times I was so lost in the story and narration that I forgot where I was and what I was doing. Personally, I think that is the reaction you look for in an audiobook, when you know it was worth the time and money. I will definitely be looking for more audiobooks by James.
    Nothing Magic about this one!
What disappointed you about Magic Mirror?
Incredibly slow build-up to a predictable story.
    Two dimensional characters.
The main character is just too good to be true - I was waiting for him to leap tall buildings in a single bound!
Would you ever listen to anything by Sean Ellis again?
    Definitely not!
What three words best describe James Conlans performance?
    Poor, poor & poor
What character would you cut from Magic Mirror?
    Michael Rook
    Any additional comments?
    Clive Cussler he aint!

    Well written detective thriller
If you could sum up In the Moon of Red Ponies in three words, what would they be?
    Violent, intelligent, unconventional
What about Tom Stechschultes performance did you like?
A first class reader with a tough voice suited to the characters.
    Any additional comments?
A character thriller, with the three main players many shades of grey. If I have a slight criticism it is that some of the villains are pure evil to the limits of credibility. The style is intelligent written, with frequent turns of phrase that made me feel, "that's spot on".

Great read but not my kind of ending
I really, really enjoyed this story. Got me hooked and keep me reading on. At times I couldnât wait to get back to the story. I enjoyed the twists and turns and characters. The only reason this is not a five star is due to the end of the book. Very unhappy with the ending! I should be used to is after reading so many Stephen King books since his never pan out the way I want them to either. No matter what this was a great story with elements of action, horror, paranormal and mystery.
To those who rated it a one star and claimed it was written as if it was a teenager writing it and accusing him of having his family and friends give him five stars. Get over yourselves. It was very well written and didnât read as if written by a teen. I donât know this author at all, in fact this is the first novel I have read by him and have downloaded a couple more now so there goes your theories!
To those who stated they couldnât finish it..to bad for you because you missed out on a good story. I read both good and bad reviews before I purchase a book but many times I see the one stars and their reviews sound more like jealousy and that is when I will purchase the book.
    Would recommend.
    Chilling, Imaginative, Haunting Ride
I began this novel before an overseas move and it became temporarily shelved. However, the deeply creative and luring premise of the book stayed in my mind and brought me back. Isn't that what good books do? I was able to come back and barely miss a beat. And I'm glad that I finished this book.
The way the author skillfully meshes the characters' pasts with the serpentine road of the boy's mysterious journey and paranormal flights keeps the reader well engaged and hungry for more. But what sets this book apart is the creative enigma and evil tapestry of the boy and his past. In fact, the plot of the strange youngster is, I feel, the heart of this novel ... so much so that I wished the author had developed it even further.
I like the way the author brought in the police investigations and other very human elements; they gave an otherwise disturbingly supernatural novel a certain plausible gravity. The twists toward the end of the novel will leave everyone not just entertained, but spooked before bedtime.
Very well done and certainly worth the read.
    Yours in literature,
    JGC.

    Language: English
    Release date: 07-27-12
    Publisher: Iambik Audio Inc.
Ratings: 2.5 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense
    Publisher's Summary:
Zelmont Raines has slid a long way since his ability to jook - to out maneuver his opponents on the field - made him a Super Bowl winning wide receiver, earning him lucrative endorsement deals and more than his share of female attention. But Zee hasnt always been good at saying no, so a series of missteps involving drugs, a paternity suit or two, legal entanglements, shaky investments, and recurring injuries have virtually sidelined his career.
That is, until Los Angeles gets a new pro franchise, the Barons, and Zelmont has one last chance at the big time he dearly misses. Just as it seems he might be getting back in the flow, hes enraptured by Wilma Wells, the leggy and brainy lawyer for the team - who has a ruthless game plan all her own. And its Zelmont who might get jooked.
    Critic Reviews:
"The dialogue crackles, the tones pitch-perfect, and the prose rolls along with the kind of effortless cool that only comes with monstrous effort, not to mention an equal portion of talent." (In Denver Times)
    Members Reviews:
I wonder what Hollywood would do to the ending of this novel?
The story centers around an 'over the hill' NFL star who traded hard work for any kind of good luck. There is a ton of action, lots of ladies and plenty of intrigue. As with any good crime story there was some serious 'jooking' going on; but, it wasn't getting done by who you might think. This bare-knuckled short novel came up as an Amazon recommendation for me because I enjoy Hard-Boiled Detective stories. To name a few recent reads that I consider to be in this same general genre (all of which are part of excellent series): HardCase, Altered Carbon, The Electric Church... but, despite the familar surroundings that Phillips uses, I have never read a story quite like this one. It kept me hooked to the last page and speaking of the last page - Did anyone else see that going down a little differently?
    Terrifiic
Love books about anti-heroes and, Jook's hero is a real piece of work. It's a quick entertaining read. I'm from Los Angeles and the book really gives you that LA Vibe. I love Gary's writing style.
    Phillips creates an unforgetable antihero
Phillips' first crime novel easily outdoes his previous books. I'm an admitted fan of his Ivan Monk mysteries (especially Violent Spring), but the author's real calling was creating this volatile character, Zelmont Raines, a has-been football star trying to get his game back. Full of action, suspense, and intriguing conflict, The Jook is easily the best book I've read all year (sorry Oprah). If Hollywood had any sense, The Jook would be next year's Christmas blockbuster.
    A Tough Crime Story
Over the past few years we've seen an ever-growing number of scandals involving professional sports stars. Whether the scandals have involved drug-abuse, sexual offences, violence, right up to murder charges, I always get the impression that these sports stars all think they are above the law thanks to the hero worship of which they are the object. A good proportion of these real life stars are rolled into the character of Zelmont Raines in THE JOOK.
THE JOOK is a modern hardboiled novel that contains a healthy (or should that be unhealthy) dose of violence, drug-taking, swearing and sex scenes. It's a tremendously fast-paced story set in Los Angeles amongst the seedier members of the cities rich and famous.
