It was one of her first books, so she had just been getting her bearings. I still enjoyed it.

Fun Story

Good read!

Much better than expected

Bev is working at her father's detective agency while he is recovering from a heart attack and when she sees the supposedly philandering wife she's tailing meet with a "roughneck" she is sure he must be the woman's lover so she tails him. Unfortunately, he isn't the woman's lover he's Sam, another private detective who starts to trail her. There is nothing here that is brilliant but it's a rather fun read. Even though it's 20 years old it still seems rather fresh, with only a small about of overt alphamaleitis holding it back. Bev is a goodie two shoes who believes in love, marriage and happily ever after while Sam believes in fast cars and faster women (that's women, plural). He doesn't want love or a relationship after his wife left him after he was shot five years before. But, unfortunately for him when he meets Bev he falls instantly in lust and no amount of common sense seems to keep the two of them apart. As unlikely a pair as they are, their coming together is nothing but fun.

There could have been a little more length at the end to solidify their relationship being the ending was all about Bev accepting Sam just the way he is, but if he keeps up his philandering ways or leaves for weeks without letting her know he's going out of town I would bet money Bev would be out the door. There were still more problems that even an extra page or two could have sorted out where they both make concessions to be together, being the changes Sam made seemed to be pretty shallow. But if you are expecting a slightly sexy, slightly silly, slightly dated, slightly sweet tale of romance and roughnecks this is just what the doctor ordered.

Publisher's Summary:

What does a man say to the woman he betrayed but never stopped loving? Three years ago, Zachary Steele refused to entertain thoughts of permanency with any woman. A hedonist at heart, he didn't want to corrupt the much younger, Madigan DeLeon, by continuing his affair with her. With the hidden scars of his past, he didn't believe in happily-ever-after. By the time he realized how much Madigan meant to him, he'd driven her away. Then, one night, after being clean for a number of years, Zach briefly falls off the bandwagon. He believes his lovemaking to Madi is a drug-induced hallucination. The resulting consequences tell another story.

What does a woman do when the only man she's ever loved hurt her so deeply she feared she'd never recover? Three years after her affair with Zach so abruptly ended, celebutante, Madigan DeLeon, is thrust back into Zach's life by her mother's machinations. Brought home under the false pretenses of repairing her damaged relationship with her mother, Madi instead finds herself running a private sex club called Wicked Allure. Forced to confront her anger at his betrayal and grief at the loss of what might've been, Madi faces the realization that she's never stopped loving Zach. Can two broken hearts set aside anger and betrayal to find true love once and for all? Searching the deepest recesses of their hearts, in a place where pride and pain has no room, Madi and Zach must decide if their bond is strong enough to take a second chance at love. Or if resuming their sexual relationship is an irresistible wicked allure and the ghosts of their former relationship will finally, and forever, sever all ties between them.

loved the storyline and characters

I had read the book last year, and loved the storyline and characters: complex and loaded with emotion, baggage and the interfering hand of an overbearing and dictatorial matriarch there were many elements that enhanced the tension. Madis anger and Zachs guilt were palpable and the repeated dramatic climaxes provided a never-ending thrill ride from one scene to the next. Both Madi and Zach develop and grow throughout the book, with personal insights that enable their bond to grow and survive the essential fact that they are pawns in a game.

While the story hasnt changed, listening and reviewing the audio version did stir emotional reactions all over again, with literal snorts of disgust at the behavior of Karolyn DeLeon, matriarch, and rather spineless acceptance of the machinations of his wife from Jack. Of course there was anger, and several moments of Oh I didnt remember that part and NOW this fits better. And then there were the hormone driven, uber sexy steamy scenes that both felt natural and right, and were smattered throughout the story with interesting point of view insights provided in Madis or Zachs voice.

Unfortunately as much as I loved reading the story: the narration provided by Lauren Sweet did not work as well for me. Her voice is perfectly pleasant, and enunciation is correct, but there was a hollow sound to the audio recording. When I first thought it could be headset or player related, I listened on different devices: laptop through speakers, earbuds and mixing headphones, then the same options for iPod and lastly through my kindle fire.

Audio not good!

I first came upson this book as a free read and loved it. So I was excited when I saw it on Audible, but the audio was so bad. Lot of noise in the back ground, echo sounds. One minute it would sound right next it sounded like they were drivig while recording. The narrator wasn't all that great either. She felt flat and monatone. She didnt bring that something extra that you come to expect from audio books. I got more feeling on my kindle from the text to voice read I use when I cant see the words to read them myself.

As for the story it is really a sweet story that is heartfelt and gives you those aww & warm feelings. Its and easy and light read. But please READ it and not buy the audio version.

Deception Does Become Her!

Deceiving Derek is Cindy Procter-King's prequel to Catching Claire, both part of what will be a delightful series of love affairs and encounters under the title "Love & Other Calamities." What is exceptional about all of Procter-King's writing, whether in short story style (such as this) or in her full-length novels such as Head Over Heels, is her ability to capture her characters' personalities and, more important, their morality and humanity. She always reminds us of the good and vulnerability, even in men who seem unapproachable and veiled, as well as of the insecurity in women, even those who on their face appear strong and self-reliant. She allows her own optimism and humor to drive her writing, leaving the reader with a good feeling and wanting more. For those of us who read romantic comedy and novels, want a respite from "real life" and yearn for those days when love seemed simple, Procter-King is the answer.

Short & Sweet

**3.5 Star**

Deceiving Derek was originally published in 2002 by NovelBooks Inc. and reissued by Chippewa Publishing in 2007. There were revisions and updates done in 2012 and Deceiving Derek is now novella #1 in a 5-part romantic comedy short story series (Procter-King, C., 2012).

Deceiving Derek is a cute, funny little story. Lacey runs into a police station indicating that her lingerie prototypes were stolen out of her studio, which just happens to be her apartment, also. She needs an officer - Derek, specifically, to come investigate the thefts. She even goes so far as to bring some of the remaining pieces of thong underwear that the thief didn't grab. When they arrive at the apartment building, Derek is corralled right into the middle of a bunch of screaming women having a party. Only then does Derek realize he's been set up ~ in more ways than one.

In real life, lying to a police officer and reporting a false crime in order to get him/her to come with you to a specified location will most likely get you arrested. This, people, is why we call this fiction.

The antics displayed by Lacey in the police station are hysterical and the interaction between Lacey and Derek are funny. The story is very short at only 28 pages and is very fast paced. The physical tension between Lacey and Derek is believable, if not a bit rushed, however.

I enjoyed the author's writing style and found the story easy to follow and laugh out loud funny in a few places.

Family conflict & Forgiveness

I liked this story very much. We all grow up with our own baggage from our childhood. How we handle it as adults is what makes us. I understand Mitch Riley working hard to overcome what happened in his childhood and building walls to keep out everything including love. This is about conflict and a struggle to forgive ...and what happens when the walls we build around ourselves start to crumble. Definitely worth reading.

Five Stars

I believe this is the first Karen Rose Smith book I read, and I enjoyed it enough to be able to just choose books by her name alone after that- how nice, eh?

In this corner is admittedly romantic Jenna Wilinski, who's inherited a rather seedy boxing gym from her estranged father. With it, she can realize her dream of launching an upscale matchmaking businessprovided she can take on the very intimidating - and wickedly hot - boxer who stands in her way!

In the far corner is former pro boxer Mercer Rowley. He's the only one who can protect his "home" - even if it is a little run-down - from his determined and feisty little opponent. But, man, once the gloves come off, his hands just want to touch her everywhere.

This matchup is too close to call. But no matter which contender comes out on top, the other is sure to enjoy every minute of it.

Delightful Read

It's evident why this author was a finalist in the Romance Writers of America RITA contest six times. Her storytelling ability is phenomenal. I was so wrapped up in this story, when the hero/heroine were arguing toward the end of the book--I was right there in the room with them. I wanted to grab a couple of Kleenex, hand one to Katherine and use the other one to wipe the tears from my own eyes. Of course, I was on Katherine's side. But I also knew Stephen loved her. They were just having a communication problem. I'm so glad they figured out they both loved one another and they got their HEA.

Leigh another great book

I have always enjoyed Leigh Michaels books. She keeps you entertained with light romance and a bit of wonder. Keep them coming.

Five Stars

Good book.

Marriage of Convenience

I read this story as part of the "Falling for the Boss" bundle on KU. I've recently been re-reading some of the author's older books for fun. This one isn't as dated but there is still a technology lag. The h is working for the H as his personal assistant and doing a great job. She's secretly dating one of the sales team and he doesn't want anyone to know about it until he is promoted to manager. The h then finds out and has to attend the engagement of her "boyfriend" to the H's sister. She has quite a bit of champagne at the party and proceeds to come on to the H. They sleep together and a few weeks later she finds out she's pregnant. The H finds out and insists that they marry. Their road to the HEA is still a little bumpy. Sweet story.
