Short, concise and tightly written, "The Best-Made Plans" is the story of childhood sweethearts Kaitlyn and Penn. A fatal accident made Penn an orphan at 20, which also incidentally cut short his romantic relationship with Kaitlyn. The whole town thought it was because of shock; but Kaitlyn knows the truth... Penn did not want to marry her and that was the reason why he quit college and left town for good.

Fast-forward 10 years; Kaitlyn is a wedding planner and engaged to Marcus. Penn returns home for the wedding of his friends that Kaitlyn was arranging. It was inevitable that they cross paths again and old wounds were re-opened.

***MY TAKE ON THE STORY***

The premise is simple - a second chance for love for two childhood sweethearts. What is exciting is the tight way that the author told the story. No words or scenes were wasted. Like a series of vignettes, everything counted in the telling of the story.

All characters, from the protagonists to supporting roles, even the minor ones were fleshed out effectively. You can hear and see Penn's amusement and dry humor; emphatize with Kaitlyn as she tries to fight her tender feelings for Penn while trying to stay true to Marcus. And Marcus... what can I say... he is the villain, the aggreived party and comic relief rolled into one.

An easy read which is also a great read, overall.

Leigh Michaels always pleases

A romance in the traditional style...Leigh Michaels can be guaranteed to deliver a heart warming romance.

Wedding planner, Kaitlyn Ross was heartbroken when Penn Caldwell fled the town after a family tragedy that left his parents dead.

Not about to trust her heart to the footloose wanderer, Kaitlyn speedily sets about ensuring she's out of Penn's reach by agreeing to marry her long time boyfriend. A move that speedily backfires.

I particularly likes the brides and their dramas Michaels so skilfully interweaves within the story. If a feel good romance is your style...this book won't disappoint.

Enjoyable Read

An interesting tale about the return of a past love. The characters were likeable and the story flowed effortlessly. I enjoyed this novel.

I'm going to disagree with the other reviewers here and say that this wasn't a great story. I read it as part of the Springhill Series on KU. Again it's another second chance story where the main characters had been involved as teenagers 10 years before. The H cruelly rejected the h after she gave him her innocence and confessed her love for him. This is always a very hard plot device to swallow at the best of times but the fact that the H continues to make nasty and snide comments to the h for most of the story, really, truly got to me. He makes remarks about how he was never prepared to marry her on more than one occasion and then he congratulates her ex on not making the biggest mistake of his life. Is this romantic?? We know that the H suffered a terrible tragedy in losing his parents at the same time as he and the h were involved but this is 10 years later for heavens sake.

A good read

I really enjoyed reading about Africa, the writer was very detailed. I enjoy her books, she is a very good writer and captures your attention quickly. I didn't give it as high a score as her other books rate but it was worth the price and the time reading it.

I know this is part of a series I think and i'm def going to get the others. It was good to loose myself in the story which reminded me of the x files meets law & order. The narration helped a lot because the narrator has a great voice but also lots of emotion and just makes me feel like I was there.

Great start to a series!

OH It ranks near the top as I love this author and her stories. No one does suspense and intrigue like Ms. Eden.

Never listened to her before so can't compare to other stories but was pretty good in this one.

Alpha One was thoroughly enjoyable. It's a love story, thriller and mystery all in one. I loved the narration particularly - she is so emotionally in tune with the characters I felt like I was right there with them. I think this is a series and I can't wait to hear the next!

Fairly straight forward rescue romance

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

It was a good story and there were a couple of scenes that took me by surprise. It's a pretty basic romance with an alpha male, but the heroine was a little on the weak side.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

The voices didn't change as much as other narrators.

Fun book...

Kind of a silly title for a book that was really cute. The ending was rather abrupt but it was a fun, plausible story with interesting characters. A good choice if you're looking for a really quick, lighter read.

It didn't ring true for me

Amy is the cat-loving owner of the Destiny bookstore Under the Covers. In the previous novels she has been portrayed as a sweet matchmaker and good friend. In this novel we find out that she is a virgin and hadn't been on a date since she broke up with a high school boyfriend.

Logan is a Destiny firefighter and Amy's childhood friend. He had recently experienced a traumatic fire where he lost friends and he is recovering from the fallout. When the story starts Amy snaps him out of his funk and he kisses her but immediately blames it on the alcohol.

So...I really didn't like this story and I'm a Toni Blake fan. There were so many elements that didn't work for for me.

1. Amy and Logan have been very close friends since childhood and their newfound attraction doesn't seem likely to me because they've known each other for SO many years and never saw each other that way at all. They were next door neighbors and played together as kids, with no break in their friendship over all that time. I can't imagine that having known each other so young they wouldn't have fallen prey to the Westermarck effect. I'm not a fan of the fact that all of a sudden Amy developed all of these deep sexual and emotional feelings for Logan after one drunken semi-kiss.

2. Amy's situation sems very contrived to me. She is described as being pretty and fit. She seems to have a very modest sense of style but I can't really imagine that no one has asked her out on a date in a decade plus just because she doesn't wear sexy clothes. She is a lonely romantic but she isn't really shy. She has quite a few friends, her own business, and ties to her community so I can't imagine that she hadn't been getting some offers intermittently. There is one guy who is Lucky's friend who flirts with her and it seems somewhat incredible to me that this hadn't happened before. She is certainly outgoing enough when she matches people up so she clearly has some people skills. The 34 year-old virgin storyline just doesn't ring true and Amy is a bit too prudish for my liking. If someone else had kissed her before Logan maybe she would have fallen in love with them instead.

3. Logan is not a likeable character in this book. The fire that caused his withdrawl seemed pretty gory but his attitude didn't really make me respect him as a person. Furthermore he isn't even that into Amy untill well into the book and he fights it so hard that I didn't want them to end up together.

Great Read!

Once again, Sherryl Woods provides her readers a lively, entertaining, enjoyable read with her eighth volume in the Sweet Magnolia series, "Midnight Promises." This time the focus returns to the marriage of Karen, an employee at Dana Sue's Restaurant, "Sullivan's", and Elliott, the fitness trainer at the Corner Spa, owned by the Sweet Magnolias: Helen, Maddie and Dana Sue. The couple fell in love in an earlier volume as Karen, a single mother supporting herself and two children, struggled to face the challenges and responsibilities which all fell to her shoulders alone. After Elliott's determined courtship finally won out over Karen's doubts and insecurities, the couple faced an even more powerful block to their relationship. Elliott came from a staunch Catholic family with a firm refusal to accept Elliott's proposed marriage to a divorcee and working mother. After finally grasping that Karen's husband had deserted her and their two children, and made no subsequent attempt to support his family or be a father to the children, the Cruz family finally accepted the inevitability of the couple's intent to marry, based upon securing an annulment of Karen's marriage by the Catholic Church. Narrator is bad!

The story was good but the narrator was so bad it spoiled it for me. Celeste will be on my list of bad narrators (close to the top!)

I really enjoyed this book. it deals with problems that every day people would deal with. I personally have the same problem, my husband's family doesn't care for me at all but my family has no problem with treating people like a long lost cousin.

Wonderful!!!

Where does Just Down the Road rank among all the audiobooks you???ve listened to so far?

Up at the top! Jodi takes you right into Harmony it is like being there instead on just listening to a story.

What did you like best about this story?

I get so invested in the characters. They are normal and have faults you feel like you have met them and they are now your friends.

Which character ??? as performed by Julia Gibson ??? was your favorite?

I love all of them but I have a real soft spot for the Funeral Director. He looks at himself so practically and he is so sensible then he surprises himself. He makes me laugh and makes me cry. I love his heart and the compassion he has for other people even the dead ones.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

I think that a movie would be impossible. They would not be able to portray the depth of the community or the characters in a movie.

Can't wait for the next one! I love this series!

Heartwarming but too diffuse

Audio narration by Julia Gibson (good!) I didn't read the book, so beware of misspelled names. I haven't read the whole series, selecting only this book because I liked the sound of the plot. Lately I've been trolling for books with children playing strong and credible secondary roles. In this case, a 4-year-old played a strong secondary character, featuring in many scenes. However, he wasn't all that credible, speaking and behaving more like an 8-year-old. (But okay.)

This is heartwarming and slightly suspenseful, with a cast of strong supporting characters set in contemporary small-town Texas. It could be just my cup of tea, but for one thing. The main romance between Tinch and Addison -- and their adoption of the little orphaned boy Jamie -- was too frequently interrupted by other relationships. I couldn't sink my teeth deeply enough into any of the characters:

Tyler Wright, the 45-year-old mortician, and Kate, his affianced army major. Their pregnant young housekeeper, Autumn. Tyler, worrying about Kate. Nicely done. I liked the scene when Tyler took old Jeremiah for a ride through his apple orchard. Poignant. Beautiful.

Reagan Truman, age 21, adopted by old Jeremiah, and Noah McCallan, rodeo star.

Brandon Biggs, aka Biggs (firefighter?) and his tall nurse, Esther.

Beau Yates and Willow. Beau and his friend Border Biggs. Beau and his music. Beau and stuttering and girl crazy.

Every third chapter or so, we would return to the supposed main couple, Tinch Turner and Dr. Addison Spencer, eventually adding little Jamie to the mix. I wanted more time with Tinch, at his ranch. Wanted to see him healing his wounded horses and bonding with Jamie. Falling in love with Addison...

Suspense? Yes, with bad guys, murder, drugs, and millions of dollars.

Women's Fiction? I guess so. But also romance, with three couples making a go of it in the end, and two babies.

Light listening

The author offers a creative take on an often told story. As with most books of this kind you can see what's coming a mile away. It's a book that lets you just enjoy. The reader is very good.
