What did you love best about Us Conductors?

This is a gripping kaleidoscope of genres that doesn't let up. Invention and espionage; immigration and love; the opera house and the Gulag. Daring writing form a first time novelist who jumped in with both feet.

What about Steve Coulters performance did you like?

Steve Coulter brought a sure voice to the book that solidified the vivid, brilliant, flawed and pathetic characters. His gravitas brought depth to the plot.

This performance was painful to listen to. The authors attempt at humor were not funny and his continually putting down the people he was supposed to be saving, calling them fat and disgusting was disturbing.

One of Robbins' "I'm running out of money" novels. Not his best but has some of his signature graphic sex. I am repulsed by the frequent use of cocaine included in the novel as if it would be a good thing.

Descent From Xanadu

This story kept your attention from line to line with spine tingling effects. You felt as though you were part of the scene. Great ending.

Too much like all the other Robbins' books.only names and locations change, minor modifications to the plot, but basically just another page turner.

Descent Drom Xanadu

Another of Harold Robbins erotic thrillers. Not as good as some of his others, but written in his usual style.

Slow moving, convoluted, and confusing

Reads more like science fiction than a typical Harold Robbins romance novel. Sex and drugs do not a first rate romance novel make. Now I know why I had. never read this particular book.

superbe histoire avec des personnages tous abimés et qui fonctionnent a merveille tous ensemble. ils forment ensemble ume belle Melodie et je suis triste d avoir fini ce livre. j aimerai une suite. j ecoute les audiolivres en courant. et celui ci m a particulierement mis de bonne humeur le matin. a lire si vous avez envie d un peu de fraicheur

Les personnages sont attachants est les acteurs vraiment formidables. Seul bémol .... Cest la musique à la fin et au début de chaque chapitre. Jolie ritournelle mais trop longue.

Would you consider the audio edition of A Decent Ride to be better than the print version?

Though already a fan of audio, this performance took the medium into a different stratosphere. So much emotion, humour and pathos - genuinely and truly enhanced the experience.

What other book might you compare A Decent Ride to, and why?

I've no real audio comparisons but very much in the mould of other Welsh works...bit more accessible though

Dark, dirty, gritty, ridiculous filthy but most importantly immensely funny. Juice Terry is my hero. I'm immediately starting on Irvine's back catalogue.

I thought the Scottish accent would grind on me after a while but it was the exact opposite.

Classic Welsh!

Juice Terry returns for more dark comic capers. Anyone familiar with Welsh's other works will know what to expect as this character (from Glue and Porno fame) takes centre stage in this farfetched but entertaining adventure.

This book was on my book club list but after listening to this summary I am glad i didn't bother. Other people in the book club enjoyed the original but the story seems too depressing and negative for me.

Underwhelming

I devour books and find it near impossible not to finish a book, but this one came close. I am sure that it's an authentic representation of Russia at the time (1990s?) - somewhat grey and depressing - and although I didn't hate it, it wasn't the sort of book I'd pick up again.

On the plus side, the story was beautifully written and well-observed, perhaps useful for someone interested in Russia from a fictional perspective.

On the down side, I found it slow, not funny in the least, with largely unsympathetic characters.

Judging by all the positive reviews, perhaps it's just me, but I did find myself having to force myself to continue.

Would you listen to Life and Times of Michael K again? Why?

Yes. I found that the audio was very helpful in building character particularly when it comes to Michael K. From the first page we are told that K has a cleft lip which is an ever-present deformity and it plays into how other characters perceive him. Reading it I would often forget about that, but when Jack Klaff read Micahel K's lines he would have a lisp/deformed speech which would be a constant reminder of how Michael K would be in conversation and how others would hear/perceive him.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Life and Times of Michael K?

The moment his mother dies is heartbreaking; considering that she was all he had in this world.

Have you listened to any of Jack Klaffs other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not, but I would/will in the future.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Discussing this book in the anthroposcene context I will always be reminded of Michael K's gardening and relationship with nature.

A fine book, engagingly read.

Read the book a number of years ago, forgot the story for most part but remembered enjoying it. I thought Jack Klaff's narration is excellent, being a native myself, I really enjoyed his character voices. The story itself is typical Coetzee, the writing is terse and direct, but full of wonderful imagination as to the complicated inner life of a seemingly uncomplicated loner.
