When Lucy Bagshaw's life in Boston falls apart thanks to a scathing editorial written by her famous artist mother, she accepts her half-sister Juliet's invitation to stay with her in Hartley-by-the-Sea, a charming seaside village in Northern England.
Lucy is expecting quaint cottages and cream teas but instead finds that her sister is an aloof host; the weather is wet, windy, and cold; and her new boss, Alex Kincaid, is a disapproving widower who hired her only as a favor to Juliet.
Despite the invitation she offered, Juliet is startled by the way Lucy catapults into her orderly life. As Juliet faces her own struggles with both her distant mother and her desire for a child, her sister's irrepressible optimism begins to take hold.

    Publisher's Summary:
From Claire North comes an audio exclusive. For the first time, all three novellas have been released as one edition, set in the ingenious and thrilling world of the Gameshouse.
Novella one: The Serpent. In 17th-century Venice exists a mysterious establishment known only as the Gameshouse. There, fortunes are made and fortunes are broken over games of chess, backgammon and every other game under the sun. But those whom fortune favours may be invited to compete in the higher league...a league where the games played are of politics and empires, of economics and kings. It is a league where Capture the Castle involves real castles, where hide-and-seek takes place on a scale as big as the British Isles. Not everyone proves worthy of competing in the higher league. But one woman who is about to play may just exceed everyone's expectations.Though she must always remember: the higher the stakes, the more deadly the rules....
Novella two: The Thief. In 1930s Bangkok, one higher league player has just been challenged to a game of hide and seek. The board is all of Thailand - and the seeker will use any means possible to hunt down his quarry - be it police, government, strangers or even spies....
Novella three: The Master. The Gameshouse is an unusual institution. Many know it as the place where fortunes can be made and lost through games of chess, backgammon - every game under the sun. But a select few who are picked to compete in the higher league know that some games are played for higher stakes - those of politics and empires, of economics and kings...And now, the ultimate player is about to step forward.

    fell in love
My understanding of the town grows deep, my love for the people also grows deep. I feel bad for the tarantula, but that is besides the point.
I really wanted to like this
Being an avid listener of the podcast I was coming at the bit to hear this, however it was a let down. I think the combination of a relatively dull plot and the format in which it was presented just didn't capture the charm of Welcome to Nightvale. I thought having the narration done by Cecil Baldwin would be the icing on the cake, but having him read as an outsider to the story, rather than as a key character, just made this Nightvale feel even more disconnected from the podcast. Still worth a listen, but don't get your hopes up about the quality
    For the fans really
If you already love Nightvale then you will love this as a hugely extended episode. If you don't already love Nightvale then you will be confused and possibly angry. It's very, very surreal and does assume your previous knowledge and acceptance of, for instance, faceless old women who secretly live in your home, dog parks, sentient houses, and angels (who don't exist).
It's funny and weird and charming and disturbing as ever. If you're not already fully immersed in the world of Nightvale I would suggest you go and listen to a few of the podcasts and, if you like them, listen to all of them and then listen to this. If you dislike the first episode of Nightvale, then stop listening imediately and do not buy this book.
To be honest, the plot of the story is almost irrelevant to the world building and atmosphere so it loses a star from me.
Cecil Baldwin is obviously brilliant and no one else would be an acceptable narrator.
Oh, and Steve Carlsberg isn't such a bad guy, whatever Cecil says.
    Good, but slow at times.
A good story if you're into Night Vale as a show, but it does take quite a while to get going. Once it found a decent pace I was hooked.
    Goodnight, Nigh Vale, goodnight
i have relistened to a lot of parts, because this was my go to sleep guide. Cecil's voice is amazingly soothing. The story was much more than I thought, and exactly what i dreamed it to be.

    Title: The Driftless Area
    Author: Tom Drury
    Narrator: Bronson Pinchot
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 29 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-16-15
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 6 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Set in the rugged region of the Midwest that gives the novel its title, The Driftless Area is the story of Pierre Hunter, a young bartender with unfailing optimism, a fondness for coin tricks, and an uncanny capacity for finding trouble.
When he falls in love with the mysterious and isolated Stella Rosmarin, Pierre becomes the central player in a revenge drama he must unravel and bring to its shocking conclusion. Along the way he will liberate $77,000 from a murderous thief, summon the resources that have eluded him all his life, and come to question the very meaning of chance and mortality. Nothing is as it seems in The Driftless Area - identities shift, violent secrets lie in wait, the future can cause the past, and love becomes a mission that can take you beyond this world.
In its tender, cool irony, The Driftless Area recalls the best of neonoir, and its cast of bona fide small-town eccentrics adrift in the American Midwest make for a clever and deeply pleasurable listen from one of our most beloved authors.

Great read from start to finish
Great read from start to finish. I recently saw the movie trailer for the upcoming VOD release of The Driftless Area and was somewhat captivated by it. Not everyone seems to be a fan but I decided to look the book up here on Amazon and purchased a second-hand hardcover copy and spread the reading out over 10 days to flip through on my spare time.
It is a short book but it's very entertaining. I don't read books very often but i'm very glad I looked into this and gave it a shot. I enjoyed the final chapter the most.
    What a journey
This was such a great book. It really gets in your head and kind of makes you question all of your beliefs. I was drawn to it after watching the movie, which doesn't have much in common with the book. I recommend this book to those that like to get a little weird sometimes.
    Amazing
From the beginning to the end, feels like Pierre's never left.
And did show me how important is people that you might run by ours lives are important.
A quick, enjoyable read set in the beautiful Driftless Region
I picked up this book because I'm a fan of the Driftless Region of the Upper Midwest. I wasn't quite sure what to expect with this book, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The characters are quirky and interesting, and there are aspects of the book that are "out of this world" (otherworldly). I really like the fact that's it's a quick, fun read. I'm looking forward to seeing the feature film based on the book, too.
Did not drift off while reading
I had to read this novel for a lit class and I'm glad I did! Too often I have trouble finishing a class read but not in this case. It's a very easy read filled with extraordinary circumstances involving regular, average characters. Some students didn't enjoy the everyday people but I found them to be real and refreshing.

    Cat Just Aggravated--not really Mad
You can read the whole story in some well-intentioned spoiler's review--not here. Sometimes stories have a twist, but sometimes you can see the plot from the first chapter. I have a lot of affections for these cat cozy stories as a cat momma of five, but this is a straight shooter. It's so straight that you can smell the gunpowder. *sigh* There is very little cliffhanging because... you know what is going on...nothing surprising except maybe the very last pages where you see what one clever deputy's initiative will pay off with. (I know. They need to come up with a new modifier law for "hanging prepositions" since us renegade language law breakers keep on commuting grammar suicide.) It's got to be the hardest thing in the world to write a murder mystery series, even with talking moggies...so Miz Murphy gets a solid four. Three is ho-hum for me, which this cat ain't. (A two for me is slog, slog, halfway thru put it down in the donation pile, and get disgusted for time wasted. [It could just be not my cuppa tea, but might be yours.] A one for me is I can only force myself through the first one or two chapters, then put it down in recycling paper bin, disgusted for money wasted.)
Cat Spitting Mad - Stellar Installment in the Joe Grey Mysteries
Although published eleven years ago, Cat Spitting Mad is a wonderful example of Rousseau Murphy's fabulous writing style. The two original talking cats, Joe Grey and the beautiful Dulcie, now welcome the tortoiseshell "Kit" to their sleuthing society.
Series regulars include Clyde Damen, Joe's human companion, and of course, Molena Point police chief, Max Harper. Charlie Getz, who was once Clyde's favorite lady, now favors Max, although the cats and humans all remain best friends and look out for each other in this California seaside town. The detective cats band with their humans to defend Max who is accused - framed - in two murders, and the cats' wonderful sleuthing styles amaze the few in Molina Point who are aware of their sentient qualities. Here, Kate Osborne returns, the cat-human who captured my imagination in the very first book in the series.
Following the Joe Grey Mystery series is a treat everyone should taste. The characters become friends and the events in their lives become important parts of a world where magical cats exist. This book, along with the entire collection, remains in my library (now both Kindle and paperback) to re-read on one of those gloomy Oregon winter days, like today, when I need a reminder of why I love to read and am inspired to write.
