great history

i enjoyed this book very much . even more though in my own language as I am german

it was read very well and the story is so real it made me feel very sad at some points yet more interested to know about it from an angel of a different country

Good Story

I was given this book in exchange for an unbiased review. I liked this story. It brought together a family that had been separated by tradegy for more than twelve years. I like the way it brought out all of the little problems that was keeping the mother and daughter apart as well as sabatoging all of the other things that were going on in their lives. The narrator made me see Bea in a real way. She mastered the other voices but she nailed Bea.

Good Story with Lots of Heart

This book had a great mix of funny, sad, and heartwarming moments. The characters were definitely multi-faceted as well, which made them more relatable. It was easy to become immersed in the story/characters' lives.

The narrator was amazing! She gave each character such a unique voice that I could have picked out which character was speaking without being informed within the text. I would love to listen to some of her other work.

Very enjoyable, engaging and entertaining story. Creative with a great plot-line. A different kind of love story. A roller-coaster ride of emotions. Definitely worth your time.

Mother and daughter relationships are some of the most complex and simple at the same time. Beatrice and Annabel were both great characters. Of coarse Walter was great too. Really didnt expect that ending. But it was perfect.

Lisa Beacom did a really good job with the narration. This is the first time I have listened to a book she has narrated. Pleasant voice. Good character voices. Smooth even pace. Clearly spoken. Very easy to listen to.

OMGosh I didn't plan on loving this book so much!

This book is funny, sad, and over all heart warming! I couldn't help but fall in love with all the characters. It was truly a wonderful journey getting to know Bea and Annabel. I'm so glad the story turned out the way it did before it was too late.

Hello Memory Lane

This book felt like I went through the attic and found boxes of old pictures, yearbooks, and family videos. Even though at times it made me melancholy to think of past regrets and failures, it was equally motivational. Not sure if all generations would identify as well with the characters as I did, but Gen X should easily relate to each chapter. It feels that there should be much more to say about giving this read 5 stars, but I simply really liked it.

Disappointed

Disappointed with the story, felt like a young adult book, except for the occasional sexual reference. The performance also felt heavy handed, although she handled accents well.

exceptional

Such a wonderful poignant, heartbreaking and touching read with being hilarious too, told with the innocent voice of the protagonist. The setting location is perfect and should be used in modern fiction more often.... A must read.... beautiful. Also for audio book listeners Lenny Henry does a thoroughly excellent job I was pleasantly surprised. He immerses one into each and every character giving them all a unique voice.

an interesting story well written from the child's perspective. very well narrated by Lenny Henry.

this was a lovely story that i would widely reccomend. it is emotive but its strength is not being realustic rather than sensationalist or syrupy sweet. whist it is set in the 80's i think the experience of children in care has not changed signifigantly. the themes of identdy, belonging and human relationships are all explored artfully making for a good if at times emotional listern. Lenny Henry is one of my favourire narrator's and he has done an excellent job here with his characterisations, a subtle proformance which enhances the story

Brilliant

This book has really surprised me at just how I couldn't stop listening.

I remember the riots and Princess Diana getting married and all that. And it was true portrayal.

What was special was the relationships in the book, between Leon and all around him. But the way those characters were with each other. And I was gripped, by the last bit I was totally gripped.

Thoroughly recommend it. And Lenny of course was the most fantastic reader.

Sorry I've finished it.

One woman's journey coming to terms with her mother's death

"This Too Shall Pass" is the story of a forty year old woman, mother of two boys (from two different men) coming to terms with her mum's death. The story unfolds in the Spanish village of Cadaques, on the shores the Mediterranean Sea. Blanca finds herself in Cadaques with her two ex husbands, a lover, two children, girl friends and the family dog. The story is narrated in Blanca's voice. Funny at times, sad at other times, the story will appeal to every reader, but more so to anyone who has ever had to deal with coming to terms with the loss of a loved one.

A Smart, Sophisticated Spanish Beach Book

THIS TOO SHALL PASS has been a European smash, which made me eager to read it, though I wish I had the ability to tackle this novel in its original Spanish--I always worry that in translation, some richness disappears.There were a few "happy as a clam" "spring in my step" cliches. But only a few. The language in this novel is one of its strong points, along with character development. (Don't look for a galloping plot.)

Milana Busquet's short book is, essentially, a love letter from a daughter to her complicated mother, who has just died, and had allowed Blanca, the book's narrator, "to remain a little girl until I was forty years old." Warning: if you don't/didn't have a good relationship with your own mom, this book may leave you envious or depressed. But that's a small price to pay for an inner monologues which is lush, lively and often often funny and wise.

The Charm Is Gone

I loved book one in this new series and anticipated an engaging follow up to the charming, quirky and very atmospheric story telling. However, book two felt one dimensional, filled with stereotypes, rushed and overly wordy. To me, the relationships and the dialogue seemed wooden. It's a shame because Khan ended book one with so many possibilities for a great new series. I was bored and disappointed and even had trouble staying awake and focused. Not for me.

Lovely concept - disappointing execution...

What would have made The Perplexing Theft of the Jewel in the Crown better?

The hook of a detective with a baby elephant as a sidekick is brilliant, but this hasn't been taken advantage of properly. The story is old, cliched and been done to death and sadly this brought nothing new to the table.

Has The Perplexing Theft of the Jewel in the Crown put you off other books in this genre?

Not this genre, but certainly I won't be buying the next Inspector Chopra instalment - I really want to like these books :(

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Perplexing Theft of the Jewel in the Crown?

I'd have reworked the entire narrative - The elephant needs to be an integral part of the story, not just a metaphor for India etc. Plus the Inspector needs some development - he's fairly 1D. The story was weak and unimaginative.

Any additional comments?

This feels rushed and doesn't come close to the first one, which in itself was OK, but I had hoped they would develop - please go back to the drawing board and breathe some new life in to this!
