This ranks in the top 5 of the hundreds of audiobooks I have listed to. Emma Fielding's performance is exquisite. The way she creates the voices for the characters let me go deep into the story. Nick Hornby's story is charming, moving very funny and as someone who grew up in the 60's was a wonderful journey into the times. I have already recommended this book to various friends.

What A Disappointment!

Having read "High Fidelity" and other Nick Horrnby novels I approached this with high expectations. I kept waiting for the real novel, insight and themes to develop but they never arrived.

The book - I hesitate to use the term novel - is a fairly straightforward account of the career of a girl who progresses from Blackpool bathing beauty to TV sit-com star. Relationships with fellow actors, writers and producers come along but, with no real plot or thematic issues and no basis in reality, they are hardly even of passing interest. Why care? I didn't.

There is a slight background of other, real shows in the heyday of TV sit-com but no real or unexpected insight. If this had been the story of a real actress in a real show, rather than weak fiction, it might have had some limited interest. As a work of fiction, it seemed pointless.

Good read. Not one of his best.

The characters and the dialogue between the characters. My fear that the story was descending into a typical love story where everybody would end up happy ever after.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I would have gone with Bill's suggestion of describing a non typical family cell in 70's England.

Good book and very easy read. Not as good as How to be good or slam but still worth the 10 hour investment.

Going to College with Rachel O;Brien is A Hoot

Lots of fun getting immersed in the wacky world of the story. There's plenty of wit and humor woven into Rachel O'Brien's misadventures and the unique bunch of characters she encounters. Listening to this book can provide a great antidote to the tension of rush hour traffic.

Funnier than Raid on a cockroach!

What did you love best about Deep Fried and Pickled?

This book can both make you wish you were back in college while at the same time making you happy you never have to relive those days again.

The delivery, the narration, the phrasing and vocalizations are fantastic.

What other book might you compare Deep Fried and Pickled to and why?

While totally different while having some similar attributes, I think readers of this series and readers of Kelsey Browning and Nancy Naigle's work would appreciate this snarky southern insight.

I am Getting Old

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

To my friends college age grandkids yes. But to my age friends not really. The book was sort of a mystery, love story and let see how drunk we can get at the parties. The main story was on a young girl freshman from Ohio coming to South Carolina for college and trying to score her first fling. Oh also she knows art so thats where the mystery comes in and the story moves fast and the people we all new in high school or college.

If you are a fan of the Kite Runner...

As soon as I started reading The Secret Sky, I was immediately immersed in the writing and story. I finished the book in two days, reading any chance I could find. Fatima and Sami are such likable characters and the story allows the reader to see the reality of life in the Villages of Afghanistan. While the story is a "love" story, it is a forbidden love story and thus deals with some heavy topics. My knowledge of Afghanistan had come from network news, family members closely involved in the war, books and other stories, but this fictional book helped me to have a more complete and personal understanding of life in Afghanistan. After finishing the book, the story still stayed with me. If you are a fan of the Kite Runner, you will certainly be a fan of The Secret Sky.

I highly recommend this book to everyone I know

Extraordinary writing. This should be required reading for American Tweens everywhere, so that they can learn from other cultures, and also be aware of the struggles children around the world are battling. I highly recommend this book to everyone I know, and many I don't. Well knit storyline with salient cultural elements that dip the reader into the vast landscape of Afghanistan. Thank you to the author for taking us on this journey.

love this book

This book shows that just because you have bumps in the road you can over come them with good people in your life and accepting the things you cannot change. Also a mother's love is like no others.

Lily was only a prop

A woman who has given birth to a child with cognitive developmental delays and her husband divorce because of the strain of the child on their marriage.The young woman only sees herself as the mother of handicapped child and my impression is that she resents the child. The interaction between the mother and Lily the child is always shown to be very sweet and caring but the relationship is never carried any further. When the mother strikes up the acquaintance of a man at the hospital where Lily is having physical therapy, the rest of the book goes into romance mode and is fairly predictable . it was enjoyable to read but Lily gets nothing out of the story except a happier mother.

I really don't know. I would not think anyone would like this book.

This is a nice light fun romance with a touch of mystery to it. It's a short book, but I don't regret using up a credit on it. I found it entertaining from start to finish. It does end a bit abruptly.

Average all around

Genre: Holiday feel-good story

Milly's boyfriend dumps her right before advent. Christmas time is her favorite time of the year, so this is especially horrible for her. She had such plans. Anyway, the family tradition is for the kids to write to Santa with a list of what they want, then it is sent up the flue on the heat of a match, but without burning. Her nephews insist the adults make lists too. Milly does so, without much enthusiasm. But she soon finds the things on her list being granted, though not necessarily as she would expect.

This is another story I wish had been in an anthology. It was sweetly average, with average narration.

Short, Sweet Christmas Story

I liked a lot about this story. I wish it had been a bit more detailed, particularly at the end. Another 5-10 minutes wrapping it up would have earned it another star. I liked the characters and the premise enough to wish this wasn't such a short story. The narrator was OK, not fantastic-not horrific, not good-not bad, just OK. After a couple of recent "horrifics," I'll take OK. It is exactly as advertised, a short Christmas story. With Kindle Unlimited, this was a read and listen for free title.

Even though I did like it, I don't think I would have spent more than $3 for it, and I definitely would not waste a credit on it.

A Truly Magnificent Novel, and a moving beautiful read.

I read the kindle version and though the formatting could use some work, particularly the lack of adequate space breaks between major shifts of scene or time.

But upon finishing it my first reaction was "this was magnificent." I can not understand reviews like some here, for instance the "...bla, bla, bla..." comment. My only conclusion is perhaps some readers are not willing to invest time and patience to uncover the grandeur of a great piece of literature.

These are some of the aspects of the work I think make it magnificent.

1. It's scope. The work covers a very long time period that includes; the political history of Mexicio at a key time in it's modern growth, the First World War as it relates to Spain and Fascism, love, marriage & infidelity, parenting, fascinating characters, etc, all well integrated in a seamless web through the ongoing development and interactions of the characters.

2. The writing is so often poetic and beautiful and offers long beautiful poetic runs somewhat like a well crafted yet emotional long moving musical solo.

3. The characters are well formed, real, human, complex, courageous, flawed, soulful and moral, varied, and interesting. The conversations between them could almost be published as a stand alone University reader for a literature, cultural geography, or history seminar discussion course.

4. The development and growing maturity of Laura Diaze, the main character, could be a novella on its own. The evolution of her growth and emergence into a full giving maturity is worth the price of the novel.

5. The characters are well integrated with each other, the time, the historic/human context issues, and the geography of the setting. This makes them living, believable people.
