Title: What I Learned From a Penguin

Subtitle: A Story on How to Help People Change

Author: Jesse Payne, Daniel G. Amen

Narrator: Daniel G. Amen MD

Format: Unabridged

Length: 9 mins

Language: English

Release date: 02-13-15

Publisher: Skyboat Media, Inc.

Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 3 votes

Genres: Kids, Ages 5-7

Publisher's Summary:

Too often we pay attention to negative behavior and ignore the positive. We are rarely taught the benefit of positive reinforcement, and instead focus on the negative and expect automatic change.

This children's book is based on a true story as experienced by Dr. Amen himself. One day while watching a penguin named Fat Freddy take part in a stunt show at a local amusement park, he is astonished to see the penguin perform so well. Frustrated by his own son's behavior, Dr. Amen decides to talk with the trainer after the show to find out how she got the penguin to follow all of her directions. Through clever rhyme and storytelling, the trainer shares with Dr. Amen the power of positive reinforcement.

Though designed with elementary school students in mind, this story has taught people of all ages a valuable, life-changing lesson.

Do not buy

I love Dr. Amens work or I did. I bought this and didn't really look well/notice it was 9 minutes long. I feel dumb and cheated. It's a poem. Don't waste your money.

I don't think I'll buy any more of his work. Really. $13 dollars to hear someone read a poem? My mistake, but his too. Never cheat an audience who likes your work.

Really fun!

This is a very fun book! My son is a reluctant reader so I showed it to him and then left it sitting out for him to see on his own timing, He sat down to just look at it and right away started telling me about all the silly dangerous things happening! He did not sit and read it cover to cover, but it has been a neat book for him to pick up and read a little at a time!

Five Stars

My 10 year old son loved it. Funny. Really got him reading.

Publisher's Summary:

More adventures of Howling Vowels!

Welcome back to Sundog, Minnesota! In the three years since their adventures in the Howling Vowels, Alexa Stevens and her four friends have each grown and changed, but they are still as close as ever. It's April, and they are looking forward to a spring and summer filled with riding horses, playing with dogs, hanging out at the pool and the library, and finishing a big project: making their own movie, complete with music, scenery, and costumes! But when a new boy moves to town - a boy who has no friends - will they be able to penetrate his mysterious exterior and welcome him in?

A = Alexa

A lover of words, questions, and animals, she is quirky and sprightly and wants to know everything, so that she can know the whole story.

E = Eduardo

Tall, approachable, and calm, he loves magic, performance, and tales of adventure, and it's easy for him to find common ground with new people.

I = Isabelle

Small of stature but great of heart, she is skilled in making beautiful things and committed to speaking up for what is kind and true and reaching out to anyone in need.

O = Otto

Likeable and funny, and always in motion, he always means well, but sometimes his foot leaves the stage and ends up in his mouth.

U = Ursula

Strong and brave, she returns from 10 months on the island of Ireland more daring and determined than ever, filled with passions for horses and steampunk.

And then there's Y...

Y = Yves

Brooding and sometimes rude, he carries a foreigner's suspicion of this Midwestern town and a battered sense of himself. Will he be his own worst enemy? Or will he break through the confusing signals and oscillating impressions he sends? Will he win new friends?

Members Reviews:

Delightful

And Sometimes Y offers another look into life in Sundog, MN. I enjoyed it as much as the first book, The Howling Vowels. The imagery invoked throughout the story was delightful. Reading how Alexa and the Vowels wrestle with issues brought by a stranger was riveting. I was happy that "Y" became a friend and was helped by the Vowels. I loved the recipes at the end of the book.

Relationships

I admire the mother - daughter authors and how they combined to relate opportunities offered to a newly-minted teenager. The character Alexa is a mature 13 year-old who appreciates the opportunities given to her by her family and especially her old vowel friends and her new sometimes-y friend Yves. It is interesting to follow the friends' thoughts as each approaches his friendship with Yves.

This is a cute kids Christmas adventure. I'm only sorry my son is grown up and I have no grandkids to read it........yet!!

Ohhh pretty cute.

Great story but the narration. I think kids will love this story mostly because it drove me crazy. That's typically how it works. The story was cute. I liked it. And I admire the author's ambition to do this.

The narration was interesting. Giselle Lumas narrates using a variety of different voices which is why I think kids will love it. Especially the age group the story's meant for. One of the characters has a high pitch and my cat even loved it. Although this is a Christmas-y story, kids could listen to this anytime.

This is not the traditional story of the ant and the grasshopper. If you are hoping to teach your children anything more than sharing and friendship, this is not your book.

For Church library. section

adorable

this book doesn't bear a very close relationship to the original Aesop fable, which is a tale that castigates the grasshopper for being lazy. this book celebrates how the grasshoppers beautiful music helps steel the ant for further labors. they are yin and yang friends.

The Ant and the Grasshopper

Beautiful illustrations and well written for the entire world. Not just the little ones.

Enjoy reading this to my grand daughter.
