this was a good read also. would recommend to anyone who enjoys autobiographies esp ones about substance abuse & subsequent recovery from addictions of any kind. wish she would have not had a gag order on speaking more in depth about her relationship/divorce from slyvester stallone & more details on her husband mark gastineau's own issue w/drugs/steroids & how it played a part in their relationship ending like it did but i suppose maybe thats their story to keep private for their children. she is a strong woman & i have more respect for her now then i did before i read this cuz she is not what you see on reality shows on vh1 she is so much more than that. read & enjoy!

not up to other AG books

Actually not sure if I should write a review, as part of the book was missing due to problems while trying to use my Kindle on a motel wifi network --download issues. But most was there, definitely enough that I can say it seemed like much more amateurish writing than other books I've read in the Alan Gregory series. I don't consider White to be one of the great authors ever, but the other AG books I've read have at least been entertaining & diverting. The last one I read --Cold Case-- was told in the 1st person from Gregory's pov (I can't recall if the others were, too), & even if it did get fairly ludicrous at the end, it held my interest enough that I stayed up too late finishing it. "Remote Control" is written in a sort of revolving omniscient 3rd person narrator, & it was a bit jarring & very flat....it felt like White was writing down ideas for how the book would go, then just decided to hand the outline over to the publisher instead of going to the effort of actually writing the book. I just could not get into the book, didn't care enough to worry about whether the whole thing was there or not.

Meh.

I've read most of his books, and am a fan, but this one just didn't cut it for me.

I guess, like others, my biggest beef was the Emma character. What little character development Mr. White did resulted in little more than a whiny bitch.

Also, the high-tech stuff left me thinking that perhaps he is thinking about writing in the Sci-Fi genre. Meh.

I understand that Mr. White will be ending this series of books with the next one after "Line of Fire." It will be interesting to see what he does next, because I really consider him to be a talented writer.

Enjoyable

I found the back and forth timeline (at the beginning of each chapter) added more confusion than intrigue. A friend recommended this author / character, and I did ultimately enjoy this book. I would have preferred to begin reading book 1 in the series but it appears this one (book 5) is the first available on a kindle. On to book 6!

Good read

This book is well written and is engaging. It starts a bit slow but once you are hooked itâs hard to put it down.

Tied up loose ends nicely, good job...don't like surveys and not in the mood to fill this one out at this time.

Delightful, Thoughful, Intelligent, and Very Funny

I took a chance on this one. It has a release-date in October 2008, but one one had even bothered to rate it until now (June 2010). I am soooo glad that I took the chance!!!

It is well written & well read, and has an amazing attention to detail. It takes place in 1805, and the book is written from the point of view of the spinster-aunt of a young lady who wants to find out the answer to some pretty worrying mysteries in and around her life. The aunt (Dido Kent) is the one sent for because she is known for being too intelligent & too curious for her own good (that's why she's a spinster), and she notices things & finds connections in a very perceptive way. But, because she is the dauter of a clergyman, and still lives a somewhat sheltered life, almost entirely near her various family members, she can occasionally be naive about a few of life's darker, or stranger sides. She is totally beleivable as being of that time - NOT an almost-modern woman in a historic setting.

Maybe if Jane Austen wrote a detective story, it would be somewhat like this - a comedy of manners with clues & crimes. LOTS OF FUN!!!

Don't miss it!

I loved this book when I read it so I was so excited to see a book from Anna Dean on Audible I didn't bother to read the descr.... and didn't realize the same book was published under the title, Bellfield Hall. So don't be disappointed like I was... if you've already read Bellfield Hall.

Otherwise, there's nothing disappointing about this book! Don't miss it!

Charming Protagonist, Regency murder mystery

Aunt Dido is in her late 30s,who while keeping company of a neice that has been jilted the day after her engagement, is also attempting to discover the murderer of a unknown female found in the grounds of their host, a wealthy landowner.

Side plots (non of them instrusive, just adding the enjoyment of the novel) involve the tangled courtships of other guests in the household, plus a few red herrings along the way.

Dido is undoubtly clever but in some of the ways of the world excedingly (and amsuingly) naive, but that is in keeping with the period. Talking of which, the period detail is skillfully woven into the fabric of the novel. I enjoyed the lively letters to her sister Eliza to relay information or to give a quick recap.

The narrator can be occasionally noisy - bear with her as she does improve (I wish they had her reread the first couple of chapters though), and I found her narration on the whole quite charming.

Hoping to find more of Anna Dean's novels narrated in the near future.

This Writer Knows Little About the Area Where He Set His Book's Action

I bought this book because "Pigtown" is the old name for the eastern part of my neighborhood [Prospect Lefferts Gardens, in Brooklyn, NY, where I bought my house in 1974]. I assumed that is was set in the past, as the Pigtown name went out of use before WW II . I was wrong. The book is set in the 1990s, when it was written, by which time there were very few Italian-American residents in the former "Pigtown".

It's obvious that the author knows little about the neighborhood other then the street names and the number of the local police precinct [he even describes the precinct building wrong]. He has some knowledge of police terminology, but even gets much of that wrong, surprising for a former cop. I know because I'm a

retired NYC civil servant who spent most of my career working for a law enforcement agency [no, it wasn't the NYC PD, but , prior to working there, I worked on Police Civil Service exams and, a bit later on an employee suggestion program with many suggesters coming from the PD, so I had to learn much of the terminology].

Excellant book. Be sure to read the follow up, many of the same characters in " CHAIN OF COMMAND"

old titles holds up

I read this book years ago, the author passed away fairly young but he knew his stuff as he was a former police officer. I wanted to re read his stuff and again I was taken away by his writing.

Plenty of thrills in the space/crime caper

There are lots of thrills and tech to enjoy in this book by veteran SF writer Anderson and former AF Space Command Chief Scientist Beason. Along the way, our hero, the grounded astronaut known to one and all as "Iceberg," launches his one-man war against criminals - not political terrorists, straight-up money-seeking criminals - who have taken over NASA's Launch Control Center and are holding it and the launch-ready shuttle Atlantis hostage. The bad guys are smart and methodical, although they are not quite as smart as they think: they have too few people trying to do too many things, and it comes back to bite them. The authors know the area (they note they have taken some liberties and changed some details of real NASA security procedures) and the whole thing feels pretty plausible. The criminals have tried to make up for lack of manpower by thinking through contingencies and setting up mines and weapons to thwart NASA security forces and appear to be a larger group than they are. The good guys are not going to get out of this without heavy losses, and they don't. Readers will hang on to the end through twists, turns (and some improbable heroics by the broken-footed Iceberg). The VERY end, will, surprisingly, bring a chuckle. Solid thriller in every respect.

Ignition is the "Diehard" of this spring. Kevin Anderson and Doug Beason have proved once again that they are the masters of the techno-thriller.

Terrorists have taken over the space shuttle holding it for ransom as the our accidental hero "Iceberg" was in the right place at the wrong time, just like the trilogy of "Diehard" movies.

The action is fast and believable with lots of unexpected twists and turns that made me race through the book.

I highly recommend this fine volume and other Anderson/Beason works like "Virtual Destruction" and their other recent work "Fallout."

non-stop suspense

Once started I couldn't put the book down. Doug Beason is a friend of mine and this is the first one of his books that I have read.

Listened start to finish non stop...KNACKERED!

As the title said, started to listen over the weekend and didn't sleep until I finished... my faultfor starting it at 8 pm! gory in parts but well written. Main character did seem to be extremely lucky in the book but this did not detract form the action too much but loved it anyway. Want more Simon Kernick unabridged titles here please?

Another gripping Kernick Novel

This is the third Kernick novel I have come across. I first read 'Relentless' which I couldn't put down, then 'A good day to die' which I found equally absorbing.

What you get with Kernick are fast paced thrillers that grab you from page one and hold your attention throughout. In actual fact they grab you from the summary on the back page, that's certainly how I was drawn into his books.

If you are new to Kernick's work and like puzzling thrillers then I completely recommend them all. If you've previously enjoyed his work then you'll love 'Severed'

The novel immedietly starts with a puzzling situation that pulls you in and doesn't let go until the resolution. The characters that you meet along the way only add to the tale and will have you second guessing their roles as the novel progresses.

In short, it's a great novel, well worth reading and I can't wait for his next one.

Fairly unbelievable but very thrilling

I bought this on the strength of the author's terrific book, "Relentless". "Severed" is a more surreal story than the latter, but has the same qualities of fast pace, surprise and shock. The reader is good too, which always helps. Once I started listening I really couldn't stop as I wanted to find out why these terrible things were happening to the "hero" Tyler. I'll be looking out for more books by Simon Kernick.

I can see why Panting was Severed from future book

This is a usual Kernick book, perhaps a little more cliched than other books. I'm unsure whether I felt this because of the narration. Paul Thornley, who has done other Kernick books, has a more natural style. The narrator of this book did not leave me Panting for more (sorry!). With too much emphasis, his narration has too much of the Jeremy Clarkson telegraphed style for my liking. It is the narration equivalent of canned laughter.

All said this will not put me off Kernick, who is predictably good value if escapist macho stuff is what you want.

Tense Reading

This was an excellent story and narration. Easy to listen to and exciting. You are gripped right from the start.

This Book was FUNNY!

This woman running for her life ends up in the Alaskan outback with nothing and she totally sets up house. She digs a cozy cave home, carves a dining room table out of a bolder and makes an oven out of dirt. She finds food at her feet, found a good dog wondering around and one day a horse just showed up - she even found her prince charming out there. It just seemed everything she needed just popped up. The woman even made biscuits in her dirt oven but it never did mention where she got the flour to do it.

Living and making it the Alaskan bush is HARD! Everything is a struggle and with the animals and insects youre in the fight for your lifefor this woman it was a day at the mall.

Even though the storyline was out there it was entertaining. I did laugh quite a bit and it did keep me in suspense since I kept waiting to see if she was going to build a dishwasher out of sticks (ha!). If your looking for a survival story this isn't it but if your looking for an easy listen with corny storyline this might fit the bill.

Great idea for a book.

Would you consider the audio edition of Talkeetna Twines to be better than the print version?

I could imagine the problems associated with hiding and yet the need to survive. Surviving includes the ability to feel value in one's own life and value in others. Listening allowed my mind an opportunity to review my thoughts as well as those by the author.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

I enjoyed the mental pictures developed while listening to this book.

Better than expected

What made the experience of listening to Talkeetna Twines the most enjoyable?

the imagery was amazing. that's not usually what grabs my attention in a book on audio, but it really lent to the greatness of the story.

What other book might you compare Talkeetna Twines to and why?

there are not any books that I would compare it too. This is the first time I've really listened to a story told like this, and while I really liked it, it did not resemble much of what I am used to listening to.

What about Stephanie Brushs performance did you like?

She had a sort of hypnotic voice, it was very relaxing to listen to, but didn't make me want to fall asleep.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, but that's because there are not any books this long that I would want to listen to in one sitting.

It was a great listen. I would recommend it to anyone that doesn't mind a somewhat slower story, but a very relaxing and sweet story of love and strength of heart.

Great story, appalling narration

Engaging story of the training and experiences of an undercover FBI agent. Hard to believe that anyone could survive the orientation, let alone the field experience. And quite fascinating to see the way the agent Ana starts to identify with the anarchists whose cell she has infiltrated. But why, oh why, did anyone allow author April Smith to read her own book? Her voice is whiney and monotonous, her diction is terrible and it's often hard to tell which character is speaking because there is no modulation in her narrative. I'm giving this book a good rating because the story transcends the narration, but I came pretty close to giving up before I could learn that. Good narration is a talent and a skill -- it's an insult to audiobook listeners to subject them to an autnor's vanity project.

Stuff to listen for!

Loved this book. Loved the characters, the narrator, the story... left me hoping for more of James and Skip's adventures. It made me laugh and walk extra everyday just to keep listening. Soon as I finish this I'm going looking for more of Don Bruns books.

An utterly forgettable book

I don't really have anything negative to say about the book, but on the other hand I can't think of anything positive either. It was an utterly forgettable experience.

Definitely not typical Wilhelm

I purchased this book expecting Johanna Ward to be the narrator - as it is stated. In fact, Kate Reading is the narrator - had I known this I would NOT have purchased this book. The story is only mediocre and the narrator is irritating. Don't waste your time with this book

Science Fiction

This book was very wierd - more of a science fiction than a mystery novel, which is what I thought it would be. I found the plot a bit unusual too -- but more than that, it seems the author likes to name her women with men's names and the men with women's names. Has anyone else noticed that? Hiliary a man's name? Carmen a man's name? Lyle a woman's name? All in all I would have to say the book wasn't bad to listen to but not my favorite.

Not Typical Wilhelm

If you enjoy Kate Wilhelm's Lawyer series, don't get fooled into thinking this book is like those. I found it without any worthwhile comments. Don't waste your time.
