Well written and whimsical

Those of you who do not necessarily thrive on gore in mystery books might like this series.

They are plotted so well with lovely, sensual Greece as a living background. Descriptions of place, food, smells are all lyrically done as are the light handed allusions to Ancient Greek history.

Terrific holiday read.

Im off to buy some Greek food ingredients.

Oh and Mr Barrett continues to make reading out loud seem so easy and for me, listening like a comforting breeze.

The writer has a beautiful writing style. I love the way Anne Zouroudi was able to bring real depth to her characters. Her descriptive narrative brought the story to life.

I love reading him

I discovered this writer after watching a movie "The Empire of the Wolves" one afternoon. The movie had already started and I just continued where it was. But it was a very intriguing story, so I bought the book. Hence, I discovered more of his novels, and boy, I love reading him. Great author. Most of his stories are well researched, well written .... interesting and intelligent.

Unfulfilled Promise

This book had a shot at being terrific. Interesting concept, seedy initial location (US/Mexico border), exotic secondary location (middle of nowhere South America), money and drugs, power and its evil use, drug lords from every corner of the globe, honor and dishonor. Quite the concoction.

What was produced, however, was the literary equivalent of creating the Mona Lisa from a "paint by numbers" kit. The end result is okay, but the artistry necessary to lift the piece to the next level was completely absent.

This is a quick "read," a good story, is well narrated, and worth a listen. It certainly did not waste my time.

In the end, however, given the book's possibilities, I was left with the sense of underachievement. I really wanted it to find its legs and wow me. It just didn't.

Getback/U.S.-Mexico relations fiction

Loved the book and narrator. Had to go back couple of times because the names were difficult for me to comprehend .Once I did that - could not stop listening / felt the countries/corruption/fear/love/thoughts. Congrats author you

did it all.

Very well done story, plot, narration, solid

At first, the first 30 minutes or so I was not sure I was going to like this book, then I was totally immersed in it. This book is well written, the story is tight and seems to be very realistic. I was brought inside the world that the young agent found himself swept up in. The story keeps you on the edge of your seat and the narration is as good as it gets. Highly recommended.

A perfect slice of life

This book captures the "Triple Crossing" fabulously. In rich detail it portrays the environment, the people and the situation in techni-coloured words.I came to this book with no previous knowledge of the subject, but by the end I had a vivid picture of the happenings around this nexus of activity.

Three stars? I'm being generous...

EXCELLENT STORY & SERIES! Plus strip tip!!!

The tip for cooking a New York Strip,Steak, you'll NEVER taste any better! Works on a Porterhouse or T Bone as well! Yes that's a WHOLE LOTTA salt, But WOW does that steak taste fabulous. It works just as well in a VERY HOT cast iron skillet, with hot Crisco oil. (Olive or other vegetable oil and butter would have a burnt flavor at that hot a temperature). Really Coat that steak with salt, cook it hot n fast, and enjoy. First time I saw this done with all that salt, I thought that beautiful steak was RUINED, til that first bite, I can't/won't eat steak cooked any other way now. Has no flavor. :-(

STORY!! Excellent. I doubt Heather Graham could ever write a dull, uninteresting, story if she tried. Her characterizations scenes plots dialogue's are always EXCELLENT.

I highly recommend this book and this author!

I was mesmerized

I think Heather Graham really captured the entire Ripper myth. I

tried to make it last but I kept coming back to the story. It did not

disappoint. The mixture of reality and paranormal was great.

Another great mystery!!!

Keep on reading these wonderful books! I love the characters and the story line of course. It is wonderful seeing the same characters as they grow together as a team and form new relationships. Can't wait to read the next book!

Wow that book sucked

Talk about corny and predictable.... all I can say is....WOW...I usually like Mrs.Graham books but this one was so bad I almost couldn't finish it. I would have given a single star but the last part leading up to the end was slightly ok...the end was of course terrible...I mean seriously if this was her first book I'd be giving her the advice to take up painting because writing is not her talent...it was that bad!!!

Sacred Evil

Another amazing novel from Heather Graham. Has Jack the Ripper come back to terrorize New York from the grave? This mystery goes deeper and deeper as the Krewe of Hunters work with NYPD to solve this horrifying mystery.

Jude Crosby and Whitney Tremont work well together, even though Jude has his doubts to the Krewe of Hunters.

Each murder seem to escalate and emulate the original Jack the Ripper murders. Both the NYPD and the Feds are struggling to find out if this is in fact Jack coming back or a sadistic serial killer obsessed with Jack the Ripper in their midst.

I love the pairing of Jude and Whitney. Although Jude starts out at a non-believer, he quickly learns to trust both Whitney and the rest of the Krewe.

A guilty pleasure

It's not Eight Million Ways to Die or even Girl with the Long Green Heart, but I couldn't help liking this book. It's fast-paced, with wildly implausible action scenes and tongue-in-cheek humor. (I particularly liked the part where one of the commandos would tape a knife to his leg and then sneak up behind someone, remove the knife quiety, and kill him. Really? How does the intended victim not hear you ripping duct tape off your leg?)

I realize this book is deeply silly on many levels. But it's like watching a James Bond movie from the 70's: Yes, the plot barely makes sense. And yes, the characters are little more than cardboard cutouts. But you still can't turn away because it's so much fun seeing what comes next.

One interesting twist in this story was that the "good guys" were arguably morally worse than the bad guys. In fact, throughout the book, the menacing gangsters never actually killed anyone. Oh, they threatened and they beat a few people up, but nothing like the "good guy" commandos who basically ran around killing gangsters, gangster wives, and hapless security guards almost at random.

But hey, who doesn't like a good shoot-em-up every once in a while?

A Gritty A-Team

Certainly one of Block's lesser novels, I was struck throughout by the similarities between the Specialists of the novel and the A-TEAM television series that I watched as a kid -- not giving too much away, but each team is led by a special forces colonel who is a brilliant strategist, each team fights civilian criminals, each team is comprised of specialists in a particular field, etc.

The similarities were so profound that I expected Block's afterword to comment on them or perhaps indicate that THE SPECIALISTS was an inspiration for the A-TEAM. Since there was no such comment I can only assume that the similarities were simply coincidental. I can see why Block didn't pursue the novel as a series, as was his original intention, as both the plot and characters were flat and a sequel would have likely been as unnecessary this book itself was.

The specialists-not so much.

Block states that after completing this book he decided not to make it into a series and follow these characters. Good choice.

This story started slowly and went downhill from there. I almost thought Block may have been paid by the word. He tended to sort of drift off in parts of the story.

Wouldn't want DI Grayson investigating anything!

This could have been an interesting read except for the "hero" breaking just about every investigatory procedure category in his quest to be proven right about a pedo. I guess he drew the line at planting "evidence" but I was waiting for that. His sidekick was a little better. At least she responded to the actual evidence not the "feeling in his heart." The other characters were interesting and their psychological motivations were far more consistent and believable. As I said, it could have been really interesting if handled differently.

Pronunciation

An enjoyable story with many interesting threds. Reader voice was relaxing. Just found the poor prounciation irritating. Catriona is Kat reen a not Cat ri owna and Wisbech is Wiz beach not Wiz beck. I would have thought UK place names and personal names could be checked easily before recording.

Interesting story, but very slow...

Overall, I liked the story and the concept, but it was so slow. And predictable. I like to listen to books when I run, walk and work out on the elliptical, and I prefer books that are faster paced. But, it wasn't a bad book, just not one of my favorites.

Engrossing!

Beautifully woven with her past is the diviner's present and foreshadowing of the future. The language is lovely and the reader sublime.

Intriguing, interesting.

Loved the colorful language, however at times I truly wondered where the story was going. It was interesting, but wished there was calotype more suspense.
