Fascinatingly Unwholesome!

Wow, this really is one of those books you cannot put down. I found myself going everywhere with my headphones on, and being pretty grumpy with anyone trying to talk to me, while "Kept in the Dark" was playing. While I felt I knew where this was ultimately going, the fascination of experiencing the whole situation, and the many unexpected happenings while things got worse and worse, kept me completely glued to Hancock's book.

Being a big Tim and Jeff Buckley fan, the use of them throughout the book worked very well for me, as I found myself picturing both sixteen year old characters looking like the beautiful Buckleys,Tim, and his son, Jeff; who both died so young. I will admit to playing, "Once I was," and, "Lilac Wine," on the MP3 player frequently, between listens to this book. This certainly helped bring me back into the emotional days of my own long lost youth, sigh.

Good Romantic Suspence

The English Daughter," by Lindsay Townsend is a beautifully written romantic suspense novel.

The scenes well crafted I can see the characters in my mind's eye. Flowing movement of the players in quiet desperation to escape an evil force that is not fully identified until the very end.

"The English Daughter," is about life and death with a tender romance that heals Val's self-image. The love scenes are tasteful, not explcit and allow for imagination - they are not the focus of the tale. The mystery of Val's dreams and the unknown killer is the purpose of the telling.

Beautiful landscapes, towns and intense sunlight is the backdrop where the crime was committed. Lindsay also uses Val's vocation of piano restorer in the narrative. She weaves the intricacies of restoring wood to its original unblemished state into the healing of her cast.

I recommend this book to all that enjoy romantic suspense? The account of Val's life and travels in the here and now and in her dreams brings fulfillment to me as a listener.

I enjoyed the audiobook production of this story. The narrator, Michelle Ford, does an excellent job of telling the account. Her voice is very melodic keeping me absorbed in the descriptive tale.

A rare sequel that's as good or better than the original

I loved Cristofano's first novel, The Girl She Used to Be. LOVED. IT. So I anxiously waited for The Exceptions to be released. I was expecting this one to pick up where TGSUTB left off. So at first, when the lead male character started back at the beginning (actually before the beginning), I was thrown a bit for a loop. But as I settled in, and was able to learn what was going on in his life and his thoughts, I gained a richer perspective, a completeness to the original story. And the ending was so very satisfying and beautiful.

Others have done a good job describing what this book is about. So I will just add that this is not a mafia story with a romantic element. It is a love story, an achingly real and honest look at two flawed people who find each other, and a love that will stay with you long after the final page is turned.

What a great book! A must read for EVERYONE!

Who could have imagined "The Girl She Used To Be" could have been told so well from the perspective of the mobster? The original story was compelling in and of itself; the sequel surpassed it. You don't see that happen too often. The details of Melody and Jonathan's relationship are so well developed, it truly is hard to put this book down. The writing style of The Exceptions is, well, EXCEPTIONAL! It's hard to believe that this is only the second book written by Mr. Cristofano. The literary community would benefit from more of his works!!!

One of my faves

I wish he would write more books. You definitely should read The Girl I Used To Be 1st. I like how this book was a prequel, different charcacter point of view, and sequel all in one.

I loved it

Amazing story, David Cristofano wrote this so well and you can see the amount of thought he put into "his side of the story" in a behind the scenes aspect. However, unlike other reviews I've read, I recommend reading "The Girl She Used To Be" first. The storyline just feels better after reading her story before his. I'm glad I read it in the exact same order since it sat better in the story point of view.

Great story!!

Love this book because of the twists in the story! I listened to the audio book and I think the reader's voice added so much to the story.

Trace Evidence in Tarrant County

Carley Matheson is the first female shieriff of Justice, Texas trying to find a killer. In her investigation, she gets shot. While she's supposed to be recuperating, Texas Ranger (and former Justice sheriff) Sloan McKinney is brought in to head up the investigation.

Carley has a chip on her shoulder. She feels she has to prove herself to the "good ol' boys" of Justice because she's a woman, and Sloan's father is a suspect in a murder 16 years ago of the current victim's mother. One Sloan's father had been having an affair with.

Carley is stubborn and wants to be involved in the investigation even though she should be recuperating. Sloan would like her to rest so he can conduct the investigation. In the very first pages, these two profess up and down how much they hate and distrust each other. As the investigation progresses and Carley ends up becoming a target for the assumed killer, hormones kick in for the two of them that began 16 years ago.

As Sloan's suspicions about his father (and now mother too) rise and the attempts on Carley's life increase and he becomes angry with himself for not being able to stop the danger, they succumb to one another. Thinking they're safe in the sheriff's office following being together, an explosion almost kills them both. Sloan decides he has to stop all the distraction that is Carley and focus on keeping her safe. Carley takes his pulling away as meaning it was just sex for him while she falls and falls hard for him.

Still not finding the killer, Carley finds herself in a Ranger safe house while Sloan now works with his older brother (also a Ranger) to kick up the investigation. Carley's dream of becoming a Ranger herself comes about when she's accepted into the program. Sloan gives her that good news and then tells her he feels he's failed her because he hasn't caught the killer. He then proclaims his love and tells her when her Ranger training is done, he's going to ask her to marry him.

I didn't realize this book was part of a trilogy when I purchased it. With Sloan and his brother Wyatt now needing to (reluctantly) call in their half brother Cole (also a Texas Ranger and the love child of one of their father's numerous affairs), I'm looking forward to reading Cole's story as the killer for this old and new murder is finally found.

delightful story

This is one of the best books I've read in awhile. There were so many times I laughed out loud while reading this book. Texas Ranger Sloan, and Sheriff Carley pulled me right into this story.

This is one of the best by the man who really invented the swift crime novel told largely through remarkably rich dialogue among the seediest low-level and colorful Bostonian Irish crooks in modern fiction. He is also one of the most underrated of craftsmen and most trenchant commentators in the genre. Treasure this author. There are very few other American criime writers as good as he.

Lambert and Hook

Another great story in the Lambert and Hook series. A man disappears and his wife comes in to report him missing to Bert Hook. A few days later his mother comes in and talks to Lambert. Another few days and the man is found dead. Lambert and Hook investigate the murder and only discover the culprits by an accidental meeting while Bert is at the theater. A quite delightful read. Highly recommend this book and the series.

Classic-style murder of a philandering, drug dealing college lecturer

There's no shortage of motives for this murder, either personal or because of his role as a campus drug dealer. This standard murder mystery, with a few interludes to describe golfing, doesn't explore characters, plot, or atmosphere very deeply, but delivers a competently told story.

No explicit sex or violence, though references to both, and some explicit language, if those are considerations.

Enjoyable mystery

Enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more of this series. Complex characters, well described settings, and several suspects. I figured out one of the killers early on and the other one a few chapters before the end. The book became... how will the detectives realize the truth and how will they prove it? The end was a sad one though.

Not one of the better ones

I am a real fan of JM Gregson, but unfortunately this was not one of his good ones. The conclusion was predictable from the near beginning, and the mystery really did not move along in any good direction. In fact I found the book very ho hum from an authority I expected fireworks from.

Murder

A whodunit out of the old school. Solid story line and well defined characters. J M Gregson certainly understand the human condition. I will look forward to reading more from the same pen

I am beginning to think that Fix has to be one of the best male protagonists in urban fantasy. 'Tis true that Dresden is still at #1 but Fix is running a close second. Mr Carey has solidified his world in this book and our somewhat flawed protagonist continues to 'grow'. I loved this outing of Mr Castor and can't wait to get my hands on the next one. Highly recommended.

Supernatural

Once again Fix battles demons, weres and ghosts, as well as ever day human psychos in his own inimitable and reluctant way. Sometimes selfish, often lazy and occasionally guilt-ridden, our hero's efforts to help the widow of an old friend and fellow exorcist lead him in to danger. Thank heavens (or should that be hell?) for the delicious scary Juliet, a succubus trying hard to give up her soul sucking ways and a great character.

If you have read the preceding Felix Castor books and enjoyed his dry outlook you will not be disappointed.

Dead Men's Boots is one of my favourite Felix Castor stories. Funny, suspenseful and well crafted.

I lasted an hour with the audio-book before removing it from my Kindle. This is dire.

American narrator Michael Kramer's feeble attempt at a generic 'English' accent (which at times makes Dick Van Dyke's infamous Yank-ney brogue seem like a exemplary exercise in phonetics) deprives the reader of any of the subtleties of Carey's description, and of his barbed Scouse wit.

The result is a good book ruined by a poor and distracting reading. Dire, as I said.

Readers (or listeners) to a first-person narrative NEED to commit to the lead character - their eyes and ears, and their voice in the unfolding tale.

When Andrea is young, she and her parents are caught in a hurricane, while they barely survive it, it's when her dad tries to rescue her neighbour in the aftermath, that she loses him. From that moment on, she was fixated with the idea of trying to stop a hurricane! Years later, while researching a promising way to stop the hurricane, her husband and his men, unintentionally create the largest hurricane in history, but while most of her colleagues return safely, the hurricane, along with Andreas husband, disappear in the "Devils Triangle". Heartbroken, Andrea keeps trying to find a way to stop the hurricanes from hitting land, or at least, slow them down! 30 years pass and Andrea is getting data that seems to confirm that a massive hurricane is forming exactly where the last one was! Everything points to it being the exact same as the one years earlier, one that will devastate the country. Along with a weird transmission from the hurricane, she believes this is the one that vanished 30 years ago, the one that vanished her husband too!!

At first I expected this to be like the movie "Twister" but with hurricanes, since the blurb said, Hurricane Hunter! But it's not! This is more a detailed look at hurricanes and Andreas life trying to change them so other people never have to lose a loved one! While not being very fast paced, I still enjoyed this. Even with it being Fiction, it was still fascinating following Andrea and her team and learning all about hurricanes.

Andrea was a worthy heroine, she was focused, smart and not afraid to take the necessary risks to try to save people. Her husband, Phil was also an awesome character, though we didn't see much of him! Both were well written, though not as developed as I would of liked.

In all this was a good read. It wasn't very fast paced but still enjoyable. It made me realise how lucky I am to live in Ireland since we don't have extreme weather like that. Hurricanes are deadly!!! If you like an adventurous detailed tale of hurricanes, then this is for you :)

Karyn O'Bryant did a good job narrating this.
