A great fast paced thriller

Put up the splash guard, a lot of gore and violence. A great fast paced thriller. I will happily intersperse my extensive, varied reading with more of the books by Jon Land. Thankfully, he is a prolific writer.

Jon Land Sets the Bar High for Action Thrillers!

Over the years I have read 28 Jon Land novels. Ten thrillers featuring Blaine McCracken, two with Jared Kimberlain, all seven featuring Ben/Danielle, seven stand-alone novels, and the first two Catlin Strong thrillers. But this one was my very first Jon Land title, from way back in the fall of 1990. I was overseas with the 101st for Desert Shield. As luck would it my tent was right next to the Divarty Chalpin's, and the Chaplin had the library with hundreds of paperbacks. Remember this was over 22 years ago: no cell phones, no IPads, no Kindles, no internet, just paperbacks/hardbacks. I picked up The Eighth Trumpet and was hooked right off the bat. I immediately went back and pick up another Jon Land thriller (with Blaine I am sure). When the 101st made their push up north to kick off Desert Storm, I knew my radar would be isolated and I would be out of touch with the library. So I gathered up as many Jon Land books as I could.

But this review is for the Kindle version. I picked up about 8 Jon Land thrillers around Thanksgiving time for only $2.02 each, and the new Blaine McCracken thrillerPandora's Templefor only $2.99. What a bargain! I had read all these older titles years before, but now I could go back in time and re-read them on my Kindle. My first choice up was of course to revisit The Eighth Trumpet. Yup, I still love it! After 22+ years I remembered the gist of the thriller, but not all the details. As I was reading The Eighth Trumpet it all started coming back to me. This is why I got I got hooked on the action thriller genre in the first place! Robert Ludlum had a lot to do with this, and Tom Clancy as well. But characters like Jared (the Ferryman) in outlandish James Bond type end-of-the-world thrillers became my favorites very quickly.

This is NOT book 2 of the Inspector West series

This is actually book 4 of the Superintendent Folly series, which I did not realize until several chapters in since Folly doesn't appear for quite a while. This is a country house mystery with lots of possible killers, stolen art, mysterious goings-on in the night, quarries, fields, and country lanes. The reader did a fine job with the voices, making it simple to keep track of the rather large cast.

An effective tale that is well performed. Psychological study of several damaged souls. The potential danger facing a young girl becomes the foundation for a richly imagined study in character. Although there are numerous twist, this book and most of Millar's work depends on character study more than detection. This is crime fiction at its best.

Where does The Governor's Wife rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

This story is a B+. It started a bit slow, but turned out to be a good listen.

There was only one good guy in the book - the doc.

What does Jeff Harding bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

I would listen to Jeff Harding reading the telephone directory. He makes everything a great listen.

A Good Listen

What did you like most about The Governor's Wife?

This is my first experience of Mark Gimenez and it was positive. I thought the book was well written, you were never quite certain how the plot would turn. It did get slightly long winded in the middle regarding the political differences betwen America and Mexico, this didn't last long however and overall, I really enjoyed the book.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Governor's Wife?

Not to give anything away - for me, towards the end of the book when Bodi and Lindsey are in El Diablo's office, it was slightly far fetched that they got out of there but hey, never let reality get in the way of a good storey eh!

What about Jeff Hardings performance did you like?

Now here is a man who has perfected his craft. I have bought a number of books Jeff Harding has narrated, his ability to use his voice to bring the characters to life is excellent.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Even the devil can't take a Texan down!

Good story, well read, helps my commute.

I buy audio books to help my get through my hour each way commute. Found my self sitting in the car on my driveway to get to a point where I was happy to stop. This is the sign of a good story.

Narrator did well with flawed material

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I enjoyed the plot and characters. The novel was deeply placed geographically which gave a sense of authenticity.

What could Mark Gimenez have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

He has a fast paced writing style and can use repetition and compare/contrast well (eg So and So character was here doing this whilst 250 miles away, So and So character 2 was here doing that). However, I began to feel there was too much of this by the end of the book.

Great Book!

What an excellent book & story!

The suspense, characters & historical nature of the time the story is written in, is great. I read this book in just a few days & was thinking it would make a great motion picture.

You will not be disappointed.

Finally, for the first time in a couple of years, a book I can say I LOVED! Didn't want to stop reading it, but was sad when it was over. If you love suspence, this is a book for you! The characters stay with you for a long time. Keep 'em coming Mr. McMahon!

Great Book!

I really enjoyed reading this book. I read several books at one time, and I had to keep this thriller in my hands until the last page. Great book that I think will be a movie at the theaters soon. I eagerly await the next book!

A real page turner!

I am an avid reader and love it when I find a book I don't want to put down! This was a great read and kept me interested from beginning to end. What an outstanding first novel for J.T. McMahon. I am looking forward to the next one!

KIT AND GEMMA

Lord deserves to be better known . The characters are recognisable both in England and in North America and the plot

could be either in England or North America. Lord handles the plot in a very easy to follow manner and I am sure North Americans would get as much pleasure as I did ,reading this novel.

It was an exciting introduction into the life of Gemma Lincoln

Thoroughly enjoyed the book, and am looking forward to getting acquainted with Gemma and her colleagues in future purchases of the series.

not Elmore at his best. the last gasp of the greatest. more like a collection of short stories of variable worth.

This was great, I enjoyed this from start to finish. Great story, great characters, and brilliantly narrated by Nick Landrum, who brought each and every character to life. Highly recommend this if you're an Elmore Leonard fan!

Is this reallly Elmore Leonard?

Raylan has appeared in earlier novels by Lenonard. Here he was an entirely different character.

I sincerely doubt Leonard has written any of this novel - except his signature at the end of the manuscript.

On top of that the narration was disappointing, but then again the poor narrator must have found it hard to get inspired.

This Book Will Blow Your Mind

If I could write a novel one-tenth as good as this one, I would. Gil Brewer should be better known than he is. This book is a masterpiece from cover to cover. It is up there with the best of Jim Thompson's work. The descriptions of the people, the places, and the moods are crazy good. This is noir as it was meant to be. A man is down on his luck, way down. His wife, Ruby, is at least nine months ready and he hasn't found a lick of work in six months or more. Selling the last of his gun collection ought to pay a few bills. So he goes to his favorite bartender to sell it. Trouble finds him though in the person of Ralph Anger, who is do aptly named. And, hours of pure terror with a crazed gunman ensue. This book is so good you'll want to read it again as soon asyou finish it.

I wished I liked this a lot more than I do

As the other review here says, this is considered a classic of hardboiled crime/noir among some people. Hapless protagonist accidentally saves the life of a stone-cold psychopath who takes a liking to him -- and then they go out have some wacky misadventures.

I kid, but that really is part of the problem. This is a very episodic book: when it works, and it does in sections, it works in *moments*. The first two killings and the episode of the piano-playing girl are all excellent, Brewer gets the prose just right here and manages to convey both the offhand madness of the villain and something of the terror involved. The book does succeed sporadically.

The problem though is that Brewer has to tell a full story here, not just a sucession of "scenes", and the book doesn't really cohere as a whole. It doesn't make sense. While certain characters behave very believably, others don't give relevant information, or behave in strange ways to keep the plot going. The villain at times is a nightmarish monster right from some slasher flick (and is very believable as such) ...but at times is meant to be sympathetic too, and the whipsawing stance doesn't help the suspension of disbelief. (This is, I've discovered, a very common fault with books from this era. Whether it's space constraints or publishing restraints or simply a talent issue, they often didn't get the psychology right.)

I think basically the problem is that this is an idea for a story or a setup for a story -- not a story. "I met a psycho who took an interest in me" is not a story. It's an idea. "I met a psycho who took an interest in me -- I was scared, but I discovered one of his targets was somebody I cared about, and so I overcame my fear to try and stop him" is. (Of course, that's the plot of the movie COLLATERAL.) Notice how none of the characters really have arcs -- unlike Jim Thompson's two classics. They end up pretty much where they started, a little worse for the wear maybe but the story didn't seem to change them any. And why should it? It's meant to be a thrill machine.

(The idea that this is as good Thompson's two masterpieces is absurd, typical Pronzini over-effusion.

find a different narrator

if you're thinking of listening to this book, I recommend reading it. The narrator did not do well depicting the characters and the flexion of the voice is not how I would have read it personally. The book is over decent.

I was truly bored. I waited and waited for SOMETHING to happen, sadly it never did, relief came when when the book ended.
