Explosive culmination of a series

This review was written for an Advance Reviewer Copy of Park Avenue.

I have read all of Smith's books. From the Bullied series about a coming of age warlock to this current Fifth Avenue series. What I always enjoy about these series is how effortlessly Smith weaves his characters throughout the books. This is truly evident in Park Avenue.

Park Avenue follows the events in From Manhattan with Revenge. Our two favorite/hated assassins are back to finish the job. Accompanying them are many of the main characters in the Fifth Avenue series which turns Park Avenue into the culmination of many of the events from the previous books. I strongly suggest that you read the previous books in the series to get a better grasp of why certain characters are being targeted as well as what these characters have been through. After reading those books, you'll easily become vested in these characters. You'll start to understand the pain and joy they have experienced.

It's great to be vested in characters but In Park Avenue Smith shows no mercy towards them. There was a constant feeling that at any point, one of them would be killed and that Smith would continue the story with the focus on another. Furthermore, Smith also drops in numerous questionable characters, never knowing where their allegiances lie until he wants you to. This keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout the book.

Overall, I liked the book and would recommend the series as a whole to anyone who fancies suspense, thrillers, and tragedies. My only beef is that coming in at 300+ pages, I found Park Avenue to be a quick read; almost too quick. The pacing of the book is fast and furious. When I got to the end, I wished the book could have been longer. There is more than enough here to comfortably fit in 400+ pages while still keeping the reader hooked.

Great Noir! Great Listen!

If you could sum up The Screaming Mimi in three words, what would they be?

A. Total. Hoot.

What did you like best about this story?

The noir, the Raymond Chandler dialogue, it's a classic.

What does Stefan Rudnicki bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

What doesn't he bring. He nails the noir, the tongue-in-cheek. Everything. And that pure velvet/gravaelly voice. Swoon.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Well, his conversations with "God" moved me to hysterics.

Any additional comments?

I had never heard of this author, but a friend recommended the narrator, and it was a good choice. I love mysteries of all kinds; and though this dipped into sci-fi, it was great fun. I've always loved the Chandlers, and Bogart, and this falls into that category. There's a lot of dated word use which might offend (like calling someone a "drunk") but it's historically accurate for that time period.

Classic Noir

This is a quality noir mystery by Fredric Brown, whose writing has never let me down. I fell for his science fiction novels and short stories when I was in my teens and I'm now enjoying his mysteries. The book feels somewhat dated (it may even offend those with particularly contemporary sensibilities) and it's alcohol-soaked protagonist might seem a tad cliched now but for me, these qualities add to the novel's period charms. It's a grim but entertaining read which I throughly enjoyed (and recommend).

In addition to a well-paced plot and a very memorable ending, Brown does a nice job of evoking the book's Chicago setting. As a Chicagoan, I appreciated that.

As always, Stefan Rudnicki does a superb job.

Not exactly bad; Just not good, either

Alex Plumtree is being warned that his publishing house should not print a book about an author named Stonecypher which will reveal printer's errors that, if read in a certain way, would show the author had deliberately woven in (at the time of the great Bloomsbury group) politically treasonous messages. He is also concerned about his brother, who apparently in a former book betrayed him, and a sort of unavailable woman whom he loves. Though evidently a man smart enough to run a publishing house, he can't seem to avoid mis-interpreting or ignoring every dangerous hint/action coming his way. That becomes exasperating after a while.

I did intend to listen to it all, but confess I gave up about two thirds of the way through. Had to keep yanking my attention back to the story time and again. What did hold my attention was the information about publishing. Finally learned the origin of the "dingbats" found in our current computer font lists. But when the trivia is more interesting than the story, I think it's just time to cut my losses. Not a really bad book, but I would not put it high on my recommended book list. Tried to decide about the narrator. Was the perfect voice for a book destined to put me to sleep anyway. He was neither bad nor good. That, to me, pretty much sums up how I felt about his book. Might be someone else's cup of tea. Was not mine.

Protagonist should be a Darwin award winner.

The publisher, who is the protagonist, in this story, would have been the end of the mammalian species had he lived in the Jurassic. One wonders why the author did not get tired of him early on and just killed him off, since he apparently has no self-awareness, or a sense of self-preservation. He talks on and off, during the the novel, about having children in the future - one hopes that doesn't happen, because he probably would leave them at the zoo in the polar bear enclosure. And, who is so hot for a girlfriend that he is constantly thinking about her, but communicates only through faxes? This guy is so strange that obvious attempts to kill him are not communicated to the police, because he natters on constantly as to whether he has enough proof to make them believe him - I would have loved to kill him off for his author.

How about a more reasonable story?

Overwrought. Unbelievable situations. End result is exhaustingly silly. But still very good characters and characterizations.Try again, Ms. Kaewert. I'm still your fan.

Poor narration harms this story.

First the good news. The story revolves around a former Dallas Cowboy offensive lineman of the 70s, infamous for jumping offsides on 3rd and goal in the NFC championship game, subsequently losing the game and the team's chance at the Super Bowl. (Hence the title.) He was further disgraced when he was convicted of Federal beef soon after. Once again an overzealous US Atty and his FBI minions over reach and over play their hands, providing plenty of fodder and mystery. Its a fun romp through the dark side of Dallas and the Federal Government's manipulation of laws under the guise of the War on Drugs in the late 80s- early 90s.

The narrator gives the main character a Bill Paxton southern accent with John Wayne's pace. I like both actors, but the result is that it comes across like the man is slow witted or brain damaged. Most of the bad guys, both redneck and black are way over done as well. In action scenes the narrator over does every sentance.

AW Gray's Bino series features great narration with perfect timing that enhances his characters and his remarkable wit. When the timing is lost, so is the humor.

Excellent audio book.

A struggling ex-con, Riley Toback, finds himself unwillingly drawn back into crime. Riley is a loner who breaks his own rules and joins forces with his debt ridden brother-in-law to pull off a heist at a Jersey Shore nightclub owned by an Indian mob boss.

Unfortunately, the Indian mob boss, Karim Rashid catches him and his brother-in-law. True to form, the brother-in-law is swimming with the fishes and Riley is faced with a deadly game of chance.

Russian Roulette Las Vegas style! Throw of a die and a revolver loaded with one bullet. With his life and the life of his wife and new born son, Riley is trapped and finds he must enter into the life changing game 666. Six contestants, six chambers in the revolver and six sided die.

The throw of the die dictates how many times the revolver is fired. One bullet is placed in the chamber and the chamber is spun. Survivors can win up to $6 million dollars is it worth it? For several of the contestants yes; for Riley money is nothing, just the safety of his family is important.

Several twists, friendships and interesting characters make this book action filled and hard to step away.

The plot is well written and characters developed fully; shows a seedier side of Las Vegas and of humanity. Sometimes the ex-con is not the bad guy!

Bob Dunsworth is the narrator and does an excellent job of reading. His voice portrays the gravelly voice of ex-con Riley perfectly. The sound effects microphone is excellent and adds to the reality of the story. Clear spoken, Dunsworth does an excellent Indian, Russian and American accent. I could see the characters as Bridges was reading.

I enjoyed the audio book immensely. I did find there was a lot of foul language however, given the style and plot of the book, it is not gratuitous.

La historia es buena.....pero la narración parece que se está relatando un cuento infantil..... la dicción es buena aunque en ciertos momentos que la inflexión en la voz suena predecible

buena historia de intriga y accion

la historia es buena, narrador regular podria ser mejor narrada casi todo el libro usa un tono mas de conversacion que de narracion y en algunos puntos incluso llega a ser mono-tono. ya casi a 3/4 del libro es cuando comienza a darle mas intensidad a la narracion pero ya es tarde.

Es la primera obra que leo-oigo de Sean Black. Es un clásico thriller con personajes bien creíbles.

El balance e interacción entre los dos personajes principales ( Ryan Lock, un especialista en seguridad de primer nivel, y Ty Johnson, un marine retirado) es muy bueno.

Menos creíble es el giro que se da al asesino Hector.

Soy nueva "oyendo" libros. No creo que todos los libros puedan ser oídos, se pierde parte de la intimidad del arte de leer, pero en este caso, un thriller escrito por un autor con experiencia en guiones para la TV y el cine ha sido un placer.

Creo que puede resultar de interés a los lectores mexicanos, parte de la trama se desarrolla en México.

As ever, translators and adapters for film/TV never please an author; from Marguerite Duras to M. C. Beaton. God alone knows what Tolstoy would've made of recent TV "War & Peace" - I couldn't bear it for more than 15 minutes, and I didn't write it...

Would you listen to Death of a Scriptwriter again? Why?

Yes, the whole series following the life of Hamish Macbeth can be listened to over and over again - still as enjoyable however many times I listen. Scriptwriter didn't disappoint.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Death of a Scriptwriter?

Patricia's mortification at Lady Harriet being portrayed as a fun loving, hippy type was very amusing - I laughed out loud at some of the phrases used.

What about David Monteaths performance did you like?

Everything! I tried listening to another of the Hamish stories by a different performer and it just wasn't the same. David brings all the characters to life.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Nothing really 'moved me' but, as usual, I found the story light hearted and amusing.

Any additional comments?

Although any of the Hamish Macbeth books can be enjoyed as a stand-alone, I think it would be better to listen to them in order.

Dream Child by J.J. DiBenedetto and Narrated by Heather Jane Hogan is DiVenedetto's third book in the Dream Series. At this time the first four book are available on Audible.com as well as a short story that takes place between book 3&4 as Betty and Howard Barnes take a European Vacation.

Dream Child revolves around Sara's 4 year old daughter who has inherited Sara's Gift. You learn that as in other books the ability to see others dreams only manifests itself if you meet the person. Keeping a 4 year old from meeting people that she may dream about is just another thing for Sara to think about when raising her daughter.

The audiobook is another excellent listen as Sara meets and begins to see the dreams of relatives and of a Congressman from her district, whom she happened to meet in Washington DC.

If you think you know what a Congressmen is thinking or dreaming about then you may begin to understand how disturbing those dreams could be.

Sara, while completing her residency and raising children at night and trying to save them during the day; will she solve the mystery of her dreams in time. Will she survive the stress. The personnel conflict and mental anguish are apparent and felt in every chapter.

I highly recommend this series for all but mostly for young women who want to do it all. Sara is an excellent roll model for anyone wanting to achieve their DREAMS....
