    Sciene based time travel
There are two kinds of time travel works of fiction. The one were the time travel just happens and the other one were the author takes you through every step of the science and the possible paradoxes involved. This book is of the later category. The author really understands physics and logic and knows how to present them in an interesting fashion.
This is not really a fiction story in as much as the author doesn't create the drama through the developing of characters and situations but he builds the story by describing all the steps (at least from a 30000 foot view) necessary in thinking about time travel from the physics and logical implications perspective.
Another really interesting twist from this novel is it was written in 1980 but takes place around our current time period. The author knows physics, logic and tells a fun story which will make you learn something you didn't already know, and does not suffer what so ever because it's 30 years old. After having read this book, you will be able to defend a possibly logically consistent framework for time travel.
P.S. I had read this 30 years ago when it first came out and I had remembered absolutely loving it. I realize now why. It deals with the science and logic much more than the characterization and drama than most fiction does. The book lays out a logically consistent approach through a many world interruption of quantum physics before it became fashionable. The book was really ahead of it's time and I'm really glad Audible has made this book available.
    Wonderful story, great narration. Classic.
This book reads like a Jules Verne, Orson Wells, or Heinlein novel. Believable characters, well researched, and just plain fun.
One of the best time line novels ever
About all that I can say without spoiling a novel that I enjoyed is that the nature of time and effect of sending messages back through time are central to the story and to the development of the interactions between various characters.
Great intellectual debate on time travel
    Any additional comments?
At times I found that the book went into to too much superfluous detail, however overall, I really enjoyed the book and found its approach to time travel unique and fascinating.
    Worth a go
I have 600 books in my library this is not the best but it kept my attention, I don't know if the technical details described are correct but overall I'm glad I found this book!

    Awesome, Awesome, AWESOME!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This series was Donaldson's best work, even better than the Covenant series. 5 stars is not enough to rate this excellent story. I would highly recommend not only this book but the entire series. The book was so good that I did an all-nighter because I COULD NOT STOP LISTENING.
Have you listened to any of Scott Bricks other performances before? How does this one compare?
Scott Brick is one of the best narrators on this site. I could listen to him read the dictionary. His performance and reading style go hand in hand with Donaldson's work, especially this series.
    Any additional comments?
I read this series years ago and I'd like to thank Audible for bringing it to audio and doing such a great job.
    Excellent Space "DRAMA"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
More drama that tech, but very well written. The series primarily focuses on the human condition and often leaves "juicy" tech ideas virtually ignored.
What other book might you compare This Day All Gods Must Die: The Gap into Ruin to and why?
    Herbert's Dune: House series
Have you listened to any of Scott Bricks other performances before? How does this one compare?
Scott Brick is always excellent; but I would compare this to his reading of Hebert's Dune: House series.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I listened to the entire book over 2 consecutive days.
    Donaldson is dark.
Would you listen to This Day All Gods Must Die: The Gap into Ruin again? Why?
Maybe I'd listen again, but I'd need a lot of time in between. I like Donaldson, but he's dark. The guy is twisted and sadistic. Even the Covenant series shows his propensity for exposing tortured minds to the extreme. This series is even darker and more masochistic. He really puts people through the most awful things (in stark detail).
Sometimes it's just hard to listen to all the ugliness. But I do. I somehow get through the darkness so I can eventually find the redemption at the end. You start caring about these characters. Even some of the nasty ones.

    Makes You Think
Any book that makes me think about ideas that I have never thought about before I consider to be a strong book. The idea that a person's personality, their character, can be formed by the memories of their past, even if those memories are fake, implanted, is quite an extraordinary concept to me. I have mulled this over in my noggin for awhile now.
    Tears in Rain
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
My wife loved this I listened to it recently and although I am pretty forgiving with Sci FY these days I found it to be kind of soapy...Maybe Just me but I thought there were some areas that were left unexplained. Pace was a bit uneven. I would recommend this to an avid Sci FI reader so you can judge for yourself...
    Fantastic
This writer was so adept I saw a futuristic film noir detective movie in my imagination. Each character was so well developed I could picture thier expression. I was so pleasantly surprised by the plot twist that I didn't see coming at all.
plot moves at a snails pace
this may be a very enjoyable tale for some... just not me. I simply lost interest in the first third of the first book

    Among Sheffield's best work
At his best, Sheffield fits in the category with Larry Niven in that Sheffield is able to deliver a fully developed world driven by several far-sighted predictions of where technology and need will drive mankind. Sheffield seems to produce his very best material when he writes solo and (frankly) when he writing 20 years ago.
"Sight of Proteus" fits both those parameters, and in my opinion is among the two or three best that Sheffield ever produced. The story is based in a world where changes to the human form can be ordered from a public catalog - and of course the darker underworld where prohibited changes can be obtained.
In an over-populated world where underground scientists are willing to push the envelope of human form and evolution, this novel broke new ground pushing the "what if?" question related to human potential. I have the paperback in its 1978 edition and it has a permanent place in my SF collection.
Just proves again what a genius he is.
Its the first book in a series of three. Some real good advanced biothechnology, intristing lead charecter, good plot. He really took his time and thoght about all kinds of human forms. Get the trilogy,if you know whats good hard science fiction is.

    Great series of books
All three books are awesome. Just rad through them after finding them again (Bought used copies because I loaned mine out twenty years ago.)
Fantastic Down to Earth or should I say A Classic Down to Skaith Story
The Book deserves 5 STARS but the pricing rates only 3 STARS
The STORY Line is great and it shows that there were WORD SMITHs that did not need the hype and glitz of super technology to create a totally interesting and fascinating story!
I am VERY VERY disappointed to see that the books were published in CHINA.
The pricing from Amazon for these slim books published in CHINA for about FITY CENTS per unit was EXTREMELY over priced. After buying the 3 book series from Amazon I found to my disappointment that other vendors were selling the exact same volumes for about one half the price including shipping.
AMAZON YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOUR EXORBITANT PRICING!!
You normally have the lower price for your loyal customers.
    A Sweeping Finale To A Wonder-Filled Trilogy
First released in 1976, "The Reavers of Skaith" serves as both the wonderful finale of author Leigh Brackett's Skaith trilogy AND a fitting coda to her 36-year career. "Reavers," as it turned out, would be Brackett's final piece of published fiction before her death, at age 62, in 1978. Of course, the so-called "Queen of Space Opera" was not completely idle during her final years--she kept busy by writing the initial draft for a little picture to be later known as "The Empire Strikes Back"--but "Reavers" would serve as the finale of her legendary authorial career. Fortunately, Brackett went out with a bang, and fans of the first two books in this particular trilogy--"The Ginger Star" and "The Hounds of Skaith"--should be left happily grinning by the exploits of Brackett's most famous character, Eric John Stark, here. The third installment is at least as colorful, fast moving and thrill packed as the first two had been, and ties up all loose ends very pleasingly, indeed.
In "The Ginger Star," Stark had traveled to the planet Skaith, in the Orion Spur, to rescue his friend and mentor Simon Ashton from the planetary rulers, the Lords Protector, and their underlings, the Wandsmen. Skaith was a planet in ferment, a dying world orbiting a dying sun, with one of its city-states, Irnan, petitioning the Galactic Union for the right to emigrate, and the Lords Protector doing everything to maintain the status quo. In "Hounds," Stark and Ashton had gathered together a motley assemblage of desert tribesmen and had gone on to conquer one Skaithian city after another.

    Publisher's Summary:
    The Year is 2040.
The Marines have landed on Mars to guard the unearthed secrets of an ancient and dangerous alien race: Ourselves.
Scientists have discovered something astonishing in the subterranean ruins of a sprawling Martian city: startling evidence of an alternative history that threatens to split humanity into opposing factions and plunge the Earth into chaos and war. The USMC -- a branch of a military considered, until just recently, to be obsolete -- has dispatched the Marine Mars Expeditionary Force, a thirty-man weapons platoon, to the Red Planet to protect American civilians and interest with lethal force if necessary.
Because great powers are willing to devastate a world in order to keep an ancient secret buried. Because something that was hidden in the Martian dust for half a million years has just been unearthed . . . something that calls into question every belief that forms the delicate foundation of civilization . . .
    Something inexplicably human.
    Members Reviews:
    Fun space opera
If you like space opera this one is fun. Douglas puts an interesting twist on the future as the US gets a substantial dose of its own real politik. There are a lot of classic plot lines and good characterization for this genre. Definitely worth it.
    GOT SH@T UP HIS CHAMBER
Lots of politics. Like bumblebee, I expected something a lot different. At least some Science Fiction with the politics. As Hadland, says, Mars has nothing to do with the plot. This is the second time I have wasted money on Douglas, there will not be a third.
    I enjoyed this book...
What did you love best about Semper Mars?
Always in the first book of the series it takes time to get all the players down... About midway through the book I was into the story... Thanks for the adventure and I will be downloading book 2 and 3
Listened for the second time. Glad I did!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, this was a great listen. I just finished listening to Star Marines from the ???third??? series in this storyline and wanted to listen from the beginning as it had been so long. I'm glad I did. It is an excellent story and the narrator is very easy to listen to.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Major Garroway was the primary character and well done. His character was interesting and not so narrow in nature as some book characters are. A bit irreverent, a caring father, a dedicated marine, has his failings, but tries to work past them.
    Any additional comments?
It's going to be a bit of work to go back through the Heritage, Legacy, and the first two books of the Inheritance trilogies, but I think it will be worth it.
    Great title, misleading blurb
This book was great if you're a fan of sci fi space battles, and it scrupulously plays politics down the middle. If you're like me and you read the blurb and expected a cool alternate history that brings humans through Mars, though, don't buy it. I think that payoff is coming in book two or three, since it's barely touched on here. Instead, you get a futuristic series of military skirmishes with little levity and thankfully limited blood (sometimes these things become a gory body count - this book has a small number of casualties but makes them matter).
For that kind of book, this is a solid entry.

A powerhouse trio of science fiction greats has united to further explore the planet Avalon, first introduced in their classic novel The Legacy of Heorot.
"Once upon a long, long time ago, our parents and grandparents left a place called Earth. They traveled across the stars in a ship called Geographic to find paradise."
A new generation is growing up on the island paradise of Camelot, ignorant of the Great Grendel Wars fought when their parents and grandparents first arrived on Earth. Setting out to explore the mainland, this group of young rebels feels ready to fight any grendels that get in their way. On Avalon, however, there are monsters that dwarf the ones their parents fought, and as the group will soon learn, monsters also dwell in the human heart.
Avalon does not give up her secrets easily, and some of those mysteries are wicked as sin and blacker than the grave.

    Great follow to legacy!
What made the experience of listening to Beowulf's Children the most enjoyable?
Actions have consequences and too many sci-fi stories ignore the aftermath of changing the ecology of a world, even if it seems like a good idea.
Beowulf's Children deals with the arrogance of man attempting to change a
world, instead of doing what humans do best "adapt"!
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
From across the stars, they arrived at paradise. But paradise has a horrifying secret.
    Amazing sequel
This book managed to equal the original. Unusual for a sequel! Loved it. Niven and Pournelle have never disappointed me.
    Seemingly endless banter about sex.
Beowulf's Children suffers from an identity crisisunsure if it's erotica, or science fiction. Confused by that indecision, it doesn't do a very good job of being either one.
Lacking in actual sci-fi content, or even action, the authors have decided to fill-in with seemingly endless musings on sex. Larry Niven is well-known for his predilection for having his characters light up a cigarette whenever HE does, or reaching for a drink whenever HE feels the need, which frequently breaks the fourth wall altogether. In this book, however, one has to wonder what's going on in the writers' minds with all the preoccupation about sex.

The first of the seven books set in the Liaden Universe tells a rich and sweeping story of warring families and star-crossed lovers in a fantastic, other-world galaxy.
    Members Reviews:
Classic Heyer-esque Romance with Cultural Clash
Think of a classic Georgette Heyer Regency, add in a big dose of language and cultural misunderstanding, a dash of real danger, and a healthy dollop of good characterization, and you have Local Custom. A wonderful Space Regency, if you will. Set fairly early in the of Clan Korval, Local Custom tells the story of Er Thom yos'Galan, Master Trader and thodelm of Korval, and Anne Davis, Linguistics Scholar and Terran.
This book can be read without having read any of the other books in the Liaden Universe, and is thus one possible entry point. It's a delightful story that I did not want to stop reading, and had me driving the long way around more than once. The reading is by Bernadette Dunne, and that's all you really need to know. Ms. Dunne is a superb reader and it's a pleasure to have her for the reading of the three Space Regencies in the Liaden Universe.
One of my favorite Liaden novels
I was so happy to see that Audible hired Bernadette Dunne to read "Local Custom". It had been the only Liaden novel available on audio for a long time, and although it had been read with love by its first narrator, the art of producing audio books hadn't really reached the quality of current standards. I've listened to Bernadette Dunne read "The Sharing Knife" series by Bujold and I love her work. She does this one proud.
One nice thing about the Liaden books is the wide variety in plots and characters. While many are decidedly of the space opera variety, this one is focused on Liaden customs and is a romance. There is little "action" and lots of parlor room politics. If that is not to your taste, it is easily skipped. If it is, you will probably reread it many times, as I have.
    Narrators make a big difference
I have read every book of this series. Bernadette Dunn is an excellent narrator. I have listened to many books she has narrated and her voice makes a big difference. She is clear and her characters are easily recognizable. I find that changing narrators change the books. In later books it gets disjointed as same characters are read so differently that they are barely recognizable from book to book with narrator changes. In this series she does "Local Custom" and "Mouse and Dragon."
    Intrigue, romance, and family drama
Er Thom yos'Galan is well aware that Liaden law and custom require him to marry the contract wife his clan chooses for him, and produce an heir for his line. Unfortunately, some three years ago, Er Thom fell in love with a Terran woman, Anne Davis, a professor of linguistics on the world called University.
