The Hook is a crucial basic footwork move to learn because it is used in many footwork moves you will learn later. Similar to a Monkey Swing, The Hook will teach you how to shift your weight from one side to another so you can switch sides or change the direction of your footwork. It also teaches you how to shift your weight in order for you to be able to swing your leg.
Tips for the basic breakdance footwork move the “Hook":
    - Make sure you push to the other arm and swing your leg to the front at the same time to give room for your leg to travel to the front
    - Squeeze the ankle of the leg that you are sitting on with the back of the straight leg to perform the hook
    - Stay on your toe and still sit on your heel, don’t drop to a flat foot
    - Make sure that the leg that is out comes back to a neutral position on your toes and sitting on heels and not flat footed
    - To swing to a hook without starting with your hand on the ground, place your weight on the opposite leg that you are not swinging

  • How To Breakdance - Toprock - Kick and Twist (A Fundamental Step To Master)
In this beginner's breakdance Toprock tutorial you will learn the "Kick and Twist, a two 8 count combo to practice on your own, how to add the "Groove" to the Step and what to do with your arms.
The "Kick and Twist" utilizes what we learned in the "Kick and Skip" video as well the "Crossover" and "Salsa Step" video, to execute this movement
The "Kick and Twist" is more difficult as far as the basics go but once you get it down, it is a really fun Toprock to do.
Some tips for learning the basic Toprock the "Kick and Twist"
⁃Break each side into four separate movements
⁃ The first two movements think of keeping your legs straight, the second two movements think of bending your legs
⁃ Keep your chest to the front on the first two movements move your chest to the side on the second two movements
⁃ You will hop twice on the leg that is down from movement 4 to movement 1 on the other side
⁃ The counts for the “Kick and Twist” are "one, and, two, and" versus whole counts “one, two, three, four”
⁃ If counts throw you off just say out loud "Kick, and, Twist, and"

  • How To Breakdance - Toprock - Salsa Step or Salsa Rock (A Fundamental Step To Know)
In this beginner's breakdance tutorial, you will learn the "Salsa Step", also known as the "Salsa Rock", an 8 count combo to practice on your own, how to add the “Groove” to the step and what to do with your arms.
The "Salsa Step" is very similar to the "Kick" step, but now you will utilize your hips to add a little bit more style to your "Kick" step.
Some Tips for learning the basic Toprock, the “Salsa Step" or the "Salsa Rock”
    - After you kick to the front you will switch your feet instead of just placing your foot down like the "Kick" step
-You will twist your hips when you switch your feet after the kick
    - Twist your hips in the direction of the leg that just kicked (e.g kicking with your right, twist hips towards the right)
    - To help twist your hips, point your knee at a 45 degree angle when you switch your feet
-To create more of a snap during the step out/untwisting of the hips, turn your knee of the center/base leg towards the direction you are stepping
-To add the “Groove”, remember to rock back on the whole counts and reset/rock forward on the WHOLE counts

  • How To Breakdance - Toprock - Kick and Skip (Must Know Concepts To Change Your Toprocks)
In this beginner's breakdance tutorial, you will learn 2 “Transition” steps, the “Kick” and the “Skip”, a two 8 count combo to practice both steps, how to add the “Groove” to both steps and what to do with your arms
Both the “Kick” and the “Skip” add variation to the basic “2 Step” and set the foundation for learning future Toprock steps
Some Tips for learning the Toprock “Kick” and “Skip”
-Both the “Kick” and the “Skip” add an in between count to the “2 Step” so while practicing, count 1,and,2,and… instead of 1,2,3,4…
-Your Kick or Skip will happen on the odd counts or you can think of kicking the bass sound
-The leg that took a step out is the leg that will kick or skip next
