  • How To Breakdance - Footwork - 7 Common 6 Step Mistakes and How To Fix Them (#5 Is The Most Common)
In this beginner's breakdance Footwork tutorial you will learn about 7 common 6 step mistakes and how to fix them
    Share this Video:
The 7 common 6 step mistakes and how to fix them:
Mistake #1: Going into a crab position/tabe top position when you are in the front position of your footwork.
Fix: Make sure to keep sitting on your heels and stay on your toes when in the front. Don’t allow your hips to drop down and arms get to far behind you
Mistake #2: Reaching too far away from your body
Fix: When placing your hand down, make sure your shoulder and hand are in as straight of a line as possible to get the most leverage when using your arms for the 6 step
Mistake #3: Stepping to far away from your body
Fix: When stepping in a given direction, make sure to only step far enough where your shoulder and hand remains in a straight line. This will allow you to get the most leverage for your arms
Mistake #4: Using 2 arms too early
Fix: Place both arms down ONLY while in the frog position or all 4’s position
Mistake #5: Not stepping in front of your arm when coming to the front of your 6 step
Fix: When in the all 4’s position, make sure your first step towards the front is in front of your hand that is on the ground. This will place your body in a good position to get back to neutral
Mistake #6: Raising or lowering your hips
Fix: Keep your hips level by making sure your weight is distributed between your arm and your legs
Mistake #7: Going too fast before you have the technique down
Fix: Make sure you practice the movement slowly to understand the technique first, then you can pick up the tempo as long as you maintain your form

  • How To Breakdance - Footwork - How To Change Your 6 Step Direction (Secret To Mastering 6 Step)
In this beginner's breakdance Footwork tutorial you will learn how to change the direction of the 6 Step footwork step and 2 drills to help you practice your direction changes (plus one bonus drill)
    Share this Video:
The 6 step is one of the most popular footwork movements when people think about break dancing. The 6 step sets a strong foundation for most basic footwork movements and is altered and evolved to create new footwork patterns such as 4 Step and 3 Step.
The 6 Step is a circular pattern that uses 6 separate steps. You can travel in a clockwise or a counterclockwise direction. You can think of the 6 step as having 2 parts.
Part 1: 3 steps to get to the back
Part 2: 3 steps to get the front
Since the 6 step is just a pattern that repeats, you can technically change direction at any given step of the 6 Step. To change your direction, you will bring your foot back to the step it was previously at.
Tips for changing the direction of your 6 Step:
-Whatever foot just stepped will be stepping again back to where it previously came from
-You can think of a direction change as reversing any given step
-You can change the direction you are traveling at any given step

The 6 step is one of the most popular footwork movements when people think about break dancing. The 6 step sets a strong foundation for most basic footwork movements and is altered and evolved to create new footwork patterns such as 4 Step and 3 Step.

Part 1: 3 steps to get to the back
Part 2: 3 steps to get the front
Tips for mastering the 6 step:
-Let your legs have a slight bend vs. straightening your legs
-When you hook in the front make sure you place your hand forward so your legs have a pathway to travel backward
-When stepping back to the corner from a hook, think about pointing your knee in towards the center to help flow into the next step
-Only use both hands on the floor when you get to the all 4’s position/frog position
-When taking your first step to the front from your frog position, imagine there is an imaginary line that your hand are on and step slightly past that line so your foot is in front of your arms
when coming to the front make sure you step far enough so your body is in front of your arm by "step in hook” step
-Try sitting on the opposite butt cheek of the foot that does the “step in hook” (right foot steps in, sit on left butt cheek)
-Stay on your toes vs. allowing your foot to be flat footed
Think about altering the feet you step with (right, left, right, left…)
-Keep your chest tall in the front and only allow your chest to drop towards the floor during the all ’s position

The sweep drill will not only teach you how to transition in and out of both sweeps, but it will also train you to understand how to distribute your weight properly in order to change your sweeping leg.
Tips for practicing the sweep drill:
-Make sure the leg that is not sweeping is taking all of the weight so your sweeping leg is free to move however you want
-Make sure to return to a neutral position sitting on your heels and on your toes vs. going flat footed
-Practice the slow two 8 count drill first and make sure you understand the transitions from each leg and each sweep
-Only move to the faster 8 count drill once you can do the two 8 count drill with close to perfect technique
-Once you understand and master both drills, start to practice doing multiple sweeps and then changing what kind of sweep or what leg you are sweeping in different orders.

The back sweep builds off of the from sweep where we learn how to reverse the direction of our sweep. The sweep trains you to understand how to distribute your weight from your feet to your hands and then back to your feet. The sweep will teach you how to place your weight on one given foot so your other leg is free to swing in a full rotation.
Tips for the basic breakdance footwork move the “Back Sweep":
For the purposes of this video, we will start the back sweep from a hook
Switch your arms and lean forward as your foot travels towards the back so your leg has room to move backward
You will have to place your entire weight on your arms for a split second so you can jump over your sweeping leg
After jumping over your leg in the back make sure to land on your toe and not flat footed
Lean back and place your weight back on your jumping foot in a neutral position and bring your chest up so you can swing your leg back to the front
The longer you wait to put your jumping foot back down, the more arm strength you will need to use
