    Ohren weg!

Titel: Der Mann mit der Ledertasche
    Autor:: Charles Bukowski
    Erzähler: Matthias Brandt
    Format: Unabridged

    Sprache: Deutsch
    Veröffentlichungsdatum: 11-11-11
    Herausgeber: Verlag Antje Kunstmann
    Kategorien: Fiction, Literary
    Zusammenfassung des Herausgebers:

    Publisher's Summary:
Martin Simmonds father tells him, Never trust a musician when he speaks about love. The advice comes too late. Martin already loves Dovidl Rapoport, an eerily gifted Polish violin prodigy whose parents left him in the Simmondss care before they perished in the Holocaust. For a time the two boys are closer than brothers. But on the day he is to make his official debut, Dovidl disappears. Only 40 years later does Martin get his first clue about what happened to him.
In this ravishing novel of music and suspense, Norman Lebrecht unravels the strands of love, envy and exploitation that knot geniuses to their admirers. In doing so he also evokes the fragile bubble of Jewish life in prewar London; the fearful carnival of the Blitz, and the gray new world that emerged from its ashes. Bristling with ideas, lambent with feeling, The Song of Names is a masterful work of the imagination.

A vivid and outstanding story that sings about artistry, genius, music, love, envy, friendship, and revenge. (Booklist)

    ok
Mysticim, magic realism and soccer in South America
Mal Peet garnered a number of awards in the field of Young Adult Fiction with Keeper ,his debut novel .On the surface this would appear to be much the mixture as before-a key figure in the previous novel - South American sports journalist Paul Faustino -reappears ;the book features a soccer player in a pivotal role and there is a dose of religion and mysticism thrown into the mix as well. All pretty similar to Keeper but this time out the role of soccer is relatively muted and soccer mad boys who relished the vivid evocation of matches in the earlier book will perhaps be disappointed by the absence of any such passages in this book .The Penalty is a darker ,scarier book with more focus on religion and the troubled history of South America than on "then beautiful game"
Faustino becomes involved in the disappearance of a soccer prodigy -the gifted teenageer El Brujito (the little magician)who simply disappears after being substituted in a big game .Faustino's search takes him upriver ,to a remote and virtually inaccessible part of the jungle where he finds a world still largely in thrall to the Old Gods ,those of Africa and with their roots in slavery
Much of the book takes place in flashback with the narrative being provided by a captive African slave and he tells of transportation to Lation America ,the survival of the old ways and also features some quite violent scenes of murder and sexual violation .It is abook over which an air of violence and coruption ,both moral and legal, hangs and I am unsure of its susitability for juvenile audiences on these grounds
It is strongly written and powerful but too dark and distiurbing to be an auatomatic recommendation for soccer loving kids and adults who enjoyed the previous book .I would instead urge it upon those who like South American fiction as it gives an interesting British take on the themes commmon to Latin American novels
Liked his first book a lot better
I thought this would be a lot the book "Goal" (which was awesome). This book is just weird and hard to follow (I am an adult). Buy the first book instead.

  • No Lease on Life Audiobook by Lynne Tillman

    Title: No Lease on Life
    Author: Lynne Tillman
    Narrator: Karen Savage
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 52 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-15-11
    Publisher: Iambik Audio Inc.
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 7 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
The New York of Lynne Tillmans hilarious, audacious fourth novel is a boiling point of urban decay.
The East Village streets are overrun with crooked cops, drug addicts, pimps and prostitutes. Garbage piles up along the sidewalks amid the blaring soundtrack of car stereos. Confrontations are supercharged by the summer heat wave. This merciless noise has left Elizabeth Hall an insomniac. Junkies roam her building and overturn trashcans, but the mean-spirited landlord refuses to help clean or repair the decrepit conditions. Live-in boyfriend Roy is good-natured but too avoidant to soothe the sores of city life.
Though Elizabeth fights on for normalcy and sanity in this apathetic metropolis, violent fantasies threaten to push her over the edge. In vivid detail, she begins to imagine murders: those of the morons she despises, and, most obsessively, her own.
Frightening, hilarious, and wholly addictive, No Lease on Life is an avant-garde sucker-punch, a plea for humanity propelled by dark wit and unflinching honesty. Tillmans spare prose, frank, poignant and always illuminating, captures all the raving absurdity of a very bad day in Americas toughest, hottest melting pot.
    Critic Reviews:
"Confirms and enhances her reputation as one of America's most challenging and adventurous writers." (Guardian)
[Elizabeth] neither recoils nor romanticizes Shes a character who stays with you after you put the book downa creature of occasional dark impulses, intermittent grumpiness and perennial willingness to pull up her socks and deal. (David Gates, New York Times Book Review)

    not compelling
    Any additional comments?
Tillman has been praised as some genius avant-garde writer like Beckett so I gave it longer than I normally would've, but gave up almost half-way through. The writing is nothing special, the characters nothing special and nothing happens. If there's some deep subtext, it was lost on me. (It's sprinkled with increasingly vulgar corny jokes. Almost every one I'd heard before, which I think must've been the point but what it's supposed to mean, I don't know.)
    Love and Hate
I loved this book, but I also hated it! Not sure what else to make of it.

    Title: Pearl
    Author: Mary Gordon
    Narrator: Kymberli Colbourne
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 13 hrs and 38 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-28-10
    Publisher: Audible Studios

    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
On Christmas night of 1998, Maria Meyers learns that her 20-year-old daughter, Pearl, has chained herself outside the American embassy in Dublin, where she intends to starve herself to death. Although Maria was once a student radical and still proudly lives by her beliefs, gentle, book-loving Pearl has never been interested in politics - nor in the Catholicism her mother rejected years before. What, then, is driving her to martyr herself? Shaken by this mystery, Maria and her childhood friend (and Pearl's surrogate father), Joseph Kasperman, both rush to Pearl's side. As Mary Gordon tells the story of the bonds among them, she takes us deep into the labyrinths of maternal love, religious faith, and Ireland's tragic history. Pearl is a grand and emotionally daring novel of ideas, told with the tension of a thriller.
    Members Reviews:
    Martyrdom and Motherhood
No, this is not a book about mothers as martyrs--that's a different story. Rather, the would-be martyr here is the daughter who is starving herself in protest of the inherent tendency of humans to "do harm" to others, particularly as manifested in the death of a boy within the strife of a divided Ireland. The author employs this setting to explore questions of guilt, forgiveness, love, the value of life and the value of death in the service of a higher cause.
It is an intriguing premise, but unfortunately falls short in its execution. Intermittent stirrings of suspense are quickly buried under the weight of brooding introspection. There are moments of real insight, especially the sections on the inherent mystery of each human being to another within even the closest of relationships.
Nevertheless, while the questions it addresses are thought-provoking, the book itself is tough to get through. An excerpt from the Publishers Weekly review sums it up well: "Told by an unidentified first-person narrator, the story unfolds over the course of a few days. Even as the life-or-death crisis comes to a head, Maria [the mother] and her best friend, Joseph, are busy tackling God, sacrifice, female autonomy and the meaning of happiness. The novel's conceit provides plenty of opportunities for philosophical musing, but given this set of morose and mostly unlikable characters, the relentless self-examination grows tedious."
    Interesting premise well executed
I heard about this book in a women 's magazine and it is certainly chick lit. I felt I really got to know the characters . Kept my interest throughout. Learned about Irish history
    Its About Loss
I liked this book, not sure if I would have read it as well as I had listened. I identified with Maria and just thank my lucky stars that my daughter never chained herself to a railing. I enjoyed the introspection and had to keep reminding myself that Pearl was very young. This is not what I would call chick lit unless it made a few hundred people listen.
Mary Gordon should have done more research on, safeguarding, mental capacity and deprivation of liberty issues in the republic of Ireland before tying Pearl to the bed and be aware that a urinary catheter is inserted into the urethra not into the vagina. The nursing and medical bits that were way off reality annoyed me, the rest was fabulous.

Q: What do Tiger, Paris, Lindsay, Alec, and Oprah have in common with the enduring characters of Anton Chekhov?
A: Love, loss, pride, yearning, heartbreak, renewal, transcendence: the very stuff of life.
The immortal stories of Anton Chekhov have long entranced readers and listeners with their insights into the universal truths of human behavior...but you've never read (or heard) them quite like this.
In a witty, graceful, and revelatory feat of literary reinvention, acclaimed novelist and humorist Ben Greenman takes 19 of Chekhov's greatest stories and recasts them with some of the best-known luminaries of our time - with eye-opening, and oddly ennobling, results.

    Russian Names / Celebirty Names
This was a good book to get me reading Chekhov, as if for the first time, as an adult (see Richard Ford's introduction to "Essential Tales of Chekhov : Edited By Richard Ford"). The stories are what stay with you: I found I as easily forgot the Celebrity names as I did the Russian ones; then, after reading stories that are not in this book, trying to recall who were the celebrity characters in them. Greenman does a good job of making believable the self-reflection, and internal moral conflicts, of the modern celebrity characters, which perhaps makes the stories accessible to younger readers.
    [...]
    Five Stars
Such a wonderful and fun spin on classic stories.
Well done, but to what end?
Novelist, humorist, and New Yorker editor Greenman has concocted an odd literary hybrid: inject today's celebrities -- from Paris Hilton and David Letterman to Billy Ray Cyrus and Sarah Palin -- into the plots of Chekhov's short stories and see what they do for each other.
"Some years ago Justin Timberlake and I were riding towards evening in fall time in Louisiana to get some coffee...." Kim Kardashian exults to her siblings and parents that she has finally achieved lasting fame: the Internet is buzzing about her sex video with ex-boyfriend Ray J. "Before setting off for her audition, Lindsay Lohan kissed all the movie posters...." "One fine evening, Conan O'Brien was sitting in the second row at the Staples Center, watching the Lakers run away from the Sacramento Kings...." Jack Nicholson and Adam Sandler go hunting in the Northern California woods and trade stories about the sorry lives of other famous people.
As a critic, I like most of the books I'm given to review, and I sometimes long for a really bad one to thrash. This one is not at all bad; I'm just not convinced it's ... um ...

Joyce Carol Oates paints a haunting tapestry of American life in 22 short stories that take the listener from tempestuous inner cities to isolated rural backwaters. Obsession with loss, fear of betrayal, and sudden violence plague Oates characters as she examines the lives of the working poor and follies of the irresponsible rich with searing clarity. George Guidalls and Barbara Carusos masterful performances make this rich collection of stories a must-listen.

    An unfulfilling listen.
A 5-star rating and narration by George Guidell decided me to this book. I also thought it might be interesting to have lots of audiobooks in one as this is a compendium of short stories.
Rather like channel surfing instead of watching a full film or documentary, this book left me unsatisfied and feeling like I had wasted a night infront of the TV. The author's style isn't brilliant - capable yes, but outstanding no, and a lot of the stories simply lack anything interesting to say. I will probably avoid other titles from this author, though I remain hopeful for pleasant surprise.
    Avoid.

When her closest childhood friend falls ill, a New York City magazine editor and novelist returns home to the South - and finds herself forced to choose between pursuing her career and rekindling her relationship with the man she has long considered the love of her life.
    Critic Reviews:
"National Book Award-winner Gilchrist...has blessed her followers with another entertaining work of fiction. It presents a complex cast, not the least of these being the central character for whom the novel is named. At fiftysomething, Sarah is a high-powered editor at Time magazine and a successful novelist. At the novel's beginning, a childhood friend has died, and an old love - the husband of that friend - has reentered her life. What seems like an easy opportunity to rekindle an old flame is more akin to mixing fire and gasoline." (Library Journal)
    Members Reviews:
    Boring
When it became apparent to me that this book was boring, I kept reading anyway, simply because it was so bad. There is no one to like in this story. The self-centered, whiny characters don't even like each other. Jack and Eugenie don't like their kids. Eugenie didn't want them because she doesn't like kids. Yet she's a pediatrician? What was the author thinking in that choice?
The narrative is yawn-worthy. The sun was shining. The sky was blue. She walked to the elevator and pushed the button. She went to the sixth floor and got off. She went to her office and took off her coat. She worked until ten o'clock.
Shifts in point of view from author to characters is clumsy. It's mostly third person narrative and suddenly Jack or Sarah is thinking, in first person. The dialogue is trite and unnatural, as if it's a script and the actors are reading their lines in dress rehearsal. When Jack and Sarah are together, the dialogue slips into the stuff of romance novels. Sometimes they sound like teenagers.
    promising story falters...
While Sarah was comtemplating her past and current life, she was called to visit her childhood and dying friend. Would there be explanation and redemption for both women's lives? Would there be growth for this woman, someone who the author repeatedly referred as a "survivor", finally acquire some understanding and acceptance for other people's weaknesses? At that point of the novel, it was full of mystery and wonderment as Sarah embarked on her journey to visit her friend.
Unfortunately, her friend immediately died after a brief meeting; Sarah picked up her love affair with the friend's husband; the only thorn to their happiness was that she had to go to Paris to write a script for a large sum of money. All of sudden, we are reading a romance novel where the hero and heroine were enjoying the wonderful scenes in and outside of Paris. I couldn't help but feel the author wanted to enjoy a trip to Paris while she worked on the book; so she conveniently developed her story in that direction.
Disappointing book. One the other hand, I picked up the book from the deep discount pile. So it's my own fault to waste money and time on this book.
Professional woman finds love, romance, & true fulfillment
In Sarah Conley, Ellen Gilchrist introduces a completely new set of characters. The title character is a successful professional woman who has escaped from the suffocating throes of the South of her youth and now lives in New York City.
