    Title: An American Type
    Author: Henry Roth
    Narrator: Anthony Heald
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 5 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-08-10
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 3 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
Discovered posthumously, this final novel by the author of the greatest American immigrant novel, Call It Sleep, reintroduces us to its protagonist, Roths alter ego, Ira, who abandons his controlling lover, Edith, in favor of a blond, aristocratic pianist at the artist colony Yaddo. The ensuing conflict between his Jewish ghetto roots and his high-flown, writerly aspirations forces Ira to abandon his family temporarily for the sun-soaked promise of the American West.
Fast-paced but wrenching, set against a backdrop of crumbling piers, bedbug-infested SROs, and skyscrapers in glimmering Manhattan and seedy Los Angeles, An American Type is perhaps the last firsthand testament of the Depression, as well as a universal statement about the constant reinvention of American identity and the transcendence of love.
    Critic Reviews:
A passionate, life-embracing conclusion to Roths bold and cathartic magnum opus. (Booklist)
A sweeping portrait of 1930s America and the story of a writer struggling with art, love, and finding his own voice. (Publishers Weekly)

Remarkable Depression Romantic, Literary, Jewish Immigrant "On the Road Novel" from Roundtrip Right Coast to Left and Back Again
Henry Roth in late age found his voice again and wrote a great "on the road" picaresque novel about a Jewish novelist's journey from New York to L.A. and back again riding the rails during the Depression and weaves several love stories together along with a refreshing vulnerable sensitivity to life's challenges. Remarkable and definitely worth the read if you wish to go back to his Joycean-like masterpiece Call It Sleep about his tenement childhood as an immigrant from Europe in Brooklyn.
    Five Stars
Just happy that this book was available.
    ROTH is great anyway!
I'm a total HENRY ROTH devotee, but this book, pieced together from writings he left when he died, disappointed me. I HATE to say that because I think HENRY ROTH is just about the greatest writer I ever encountered. If you are a HENRY ROTH devotee however, it's definitely worth the read and belongs in your ROTH library.
Wonderful novel by the author of "Call it Sleep"
This is a great novel, edited posthumously from Henry Roth's notes and manuscripts by a young New Yorker editor. It's more in the vein of the Mercy of a Rude Stream books than Call it Sleep. It focuses more on the romantic relationships than the other books, and really gives insights into Roth's connection with his second wife. Also a bit more stuff about Roth's political views and his immersion in communist ideology. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoyed Call it Sleep or Mercy of a Rude Stream, or to anyone who is interested in the Jewish/ American immigrant experience. It's beautifully written and a joy to read.

  • American Subversive Audiobook by David Goodwillie

    Title: American Subversive
    Subtitle: A Novel
    Author: David Goodwillie
    Narrator: Tavia Gilbert, David Drummond
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 13 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-01-10
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 21 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
As the 21st century enters its second decade, foreign wars, the lingering recession, and a caustic political environment are taking their toll on Americans. But the party hasn't ended for Aidan Cole and his friends, a band of savvy, if cynical, New York journalists and bloggers who thrive at the intersection of media and celebrity. At wine-sodden dinner parties or in dimly lit downtown bars, their frenetic talk - of scoops and page views, sexual adventures, and trendy restaurants - continues unabated. Then, without warning, the specter of terrorism reenters their lives.
A bomb rips through the deserted floor of a midtown office tower. Middle Eastern terrorists are immediately suspected. But four days later, with no arrests and a city on edge, an anonymous email arrives in Aidan's in-box. Attached is the photograph of an attractive young white woman, along with a chilling message: "This is Paige Roderick. She's the one responsible."
So begins an extraordinary journey into the dark soul of modern America - from a back-to-the-land community in the Smoky Mountains to a Weather Underground-like bomb factory in Vermont; from Fishers Island, isolated getaway of the wealthy elite, to the hip lofts of Manhattan's Meatpacking District.
American Subversive is David Goodwillie's sharp and penetrating take on the paranoia of our times - and its real, untold dangers. In examining the connection between our collective apathy and the roots of insurrection, Goodwillie has crafted an intoxicating story of two young Americans grasping for a foothold in a culture - and a country - that's crumbling around them. With this debut novel, Goodwillie announces himself as a major new voice in American fiction. Expertly written, relentlessly suspenseful, and bitingly funny, American Subversive is both an unnervingly realistic tale of domestic terrorism and a perfectly observed portrait of Manhattan in the digital age.
    Critic Reviews:
"The mix of mocking the jaded hip...and exploring cultural and social unrest results in a comic and unsettling two-pronged dissection of a subset of contemporary America." (Publishers Weekly)

Did I miss something? Not a 4star book.
What did you like about this audiobook?
    Story unfolded quickly.
How has the book increased your interest in the subject matter?
    It hasn't
Does the author present information in a way that is interesting and insightful, and if so, how does he achieve this?
Not really. A bit like a made for TV movie. There's a story line but it's not plausible and the characters are fairly shallow.
What did you find wrong about the narrator's performance?
They were okay. They were limited by the shallowness of the characters.
Do you have any additional comments?
It passed the time. I did finish it. That's why I gave it 2-3 stars rather than less.
    Interesting set up, poor reader
The book has two readers, and the woman, Tavia Gilbert, does a good job. But I found David Drummond's reading to be excruciating and eventually stopped listening. The plot was mildly engaging, but not enough to make me suffer through.

    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 10 hrs
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-24-10
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 5 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
A collection of stories from one of the New Yorker's 20 young fiction writers of the new millennium, a series of unforgettable glimpses into contemporary family life. Set in the American Southwest, and featuring one previously unpublished story, Nothing Right shows one of our best writers working at the top of her game.
Antonya Nelson's stories are masterpieces: poignant, hilarious, truthful explorations of domesticity. The artfully rendered characters in Nothing Right try to keep themselves intact as their personal lives explode around them. A mother and her teenage son finally find common ground when his girlfriend becomes pregnant. A woman leaves her husband and finds herself living with a stranger who is getting extensive plastic surgery while her best friend is dying of cancer. In "Or Else", one of three short stories nominated for a National Magazine Award for the New Yorker, a man brings his girlfriend to a house he claims belongs to his family, only to have his lie exposed when one of the real owners comes home to scatter her father's ashes.
These stories are sure to delight longtime fans and listeners lucky enough to be just discovering Antonya Nelson.
    Critic Reviews:
Nelson never chafes against the limitations of her chosen form, the realistic well-made story. Its the ideal medium for a writer who isnt afraid to remind us of the familiar, who values insight over epiphany. (New York Times Book Review)
"Stellar. never has anxiety been made as entertaining as it is here. Nelson deploys a quirky, far-reaching humor and resonant detail to describe both the quiet and not-so-quiet implosions of midwestern families as they attempt to cope with contemporary life. Nelson is in complete command of her material here, infusing her stories with just the right shades of poignancy, humor, and heartbreak. (Booklist)
    Members Reviews:
Not a thing 'wrong' with these 'right on' stories
I was struck by the wry insight into human nature of which Ms. Nelson kept reminding us. Like from "We and They:" '---could there have been a more perfect child? And naturally, and unfortunately, his parents had not stopped while they were ahead.' The characters of all her stories were endearingly flawed. I got that we probably are too, though seemingly blind to it. A blessing in disguise or our greatest flaw? These stories made me want to think like her. Made me want to read them again---carefully.
Read one of her other books instead of this one
I considered myself a huge fan of Antonya Nelson until this collection. Something has changed. Her latest work reeks of trying too hard to be cool. There's a certain smugness at hand this time around that did not sit well with me either -- is that the author's personal success going to her head or does she just enjoy the sound of her own voice too much? In the past, especially with her collection Female Trouble, I found plenty to relate to with Nelson's characters. This time it felt surfacey, boring, redundant. There was too much about unbelievably wise and snotty children/teens for my taste. And enough with the generic titles already. Nothing Right, whatever.
Slices of Life From Superb Storyteller
Although most of these short stories have previously been published in various periodicals, this collection is worth having on the shelf or nightstand for reading and re-reading.

    Title: John
    Author: Niall Williams
    Narrator: Nicholas Bell
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 14 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-30-08
    Publisher: Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 16 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
In the years following the death of Jesus Christ, John the Apostle, now a frail, blind old man, lives in forced exile on the desolate island of Patmos with a small group of his disciples. Together, the group has endured their banishment, but after years awaiting Christ's return, fissures form within their faith, and, inevitably, one of John's followers disavows Christ's divinity and breaks away from the community, threatening to change the course of Christianity. When the Roman emperor lifts the banishment of Christians, John and his followers are permitted to return to Ephesus, a chaotic world of competing religious sects where Christianity is in danger of vanishing. It is against this turbulent background-and inspired by Jesus's radical message of love and forgiveness-that John comes to dictate his Gospel.
Immensely impressive and based on actual historical events, John is at once an ambitious and provocative reimagining of the last surviving apostle and a powerful look at faith and how it lives and dies in the hearts of men.
At a time when many remain skeptical about religion but still thirst for spiritual fulfillment, Niall Williams's extraordinary and masterful new novel reveals a universally appealing message of hope and love.
    Editorial Reviews:
A formidable work of scholarship and imagination, this is a beautifully written reimagining of John the Apostle's final years in exile. Old, frail, and blind, John has instructed his small group of followers on the island of Patmos to wait for Christ's return, but he is slow in coming. The faith of the men dwindles, and even John himself is tested. Eventually John and his followers return to Ephesus, where John dictates his Gospel. Performer Nicholas Bell brings beautifully enunciated and rhythmic narration to this richly imagined account of the last surviving apostle.
    Members Reviews:
A fascinating study of the power of faith, but...
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Yes. NW is a fabulous writer and I never wanted to put it down.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
Most: Portrayal of a fragile community of faith.
Least: How sectarianism starts/is inevitable (I would've liked more on this)
What three words best describe Nicholas Bells performance?
Solemn but salivary (too many swallowing sounds)
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
    Yes definitely
    Any additional comments?
Niall Williams asks the question "How hard was it, in the first days, to cling to a faith in the extraordinary story of Christ. NW's answer is, soul-destroying hard! The message that Jesus' disciples believed he had brought from heaven must have seemed incredible even to them and their tiny numbers of followers. NW's book is a gripping portrait of the fragility of an early Christian community as it waited in vain for Jesus'return. They were doing so during a time and in a place that, it seems, was unusually full of powerful persuasive cults including competing ones that also Jesus in their narratives. The story is fantastically powerful because we know, of course, how gloriously it unfolded for Christianity in the centuries that followed.
But, "John" is ultimately unsatisfying. NW' resolution of the complex components of doubt that multiply in the book felt to me like a cop out.

    Beautiful Disturbing Prose
Uwem Akpan writes in dialect and the Audible reading is exceptional as the reader is taken into the African world through short stories. Muslim violence in Northern Nigeria is related in a most compelling way. The most powerful story concerns the killing of a mother in front of her only child - who relates the story.
Anyone with an interest in Africa, good story telling, or the plight of children will benefit by these stories. Those just interested in great prose will not be disappointed either.
But it is an abridged version
This is an incredible book in every way, but be sure to note that this audible download, disappointingly, is "Unabridged Selections" and not the entire book. Apparently, an audio version of the entire book is not available at the time I am writing this.
    Great Stories of Africa
I thought these stories were fantastic - I cannot understand the 2 negative reviews. The readers so a fabulous job. The only negative for me is that when I bought and listened to this audiobook in Q4'09, there were 2 stories that were missing! Audible says that we'll be notified when the 2 additional stories are available in audio format, but it's been months and I've heard nothing.
    Lovely Prose/Heartwrenching Stories
Only regret is that there are only 3 of the 5 stories from the actual book. Please come out with an unabridged full version!
I still give it 5 stars
Even though there are only 3 of the 5 stories, I'll give it 5 stars.
What hauntingly, distrubing and vivid stories. I stood there listening to the 2nd one unable to move. I do hope that I'll be able to get the othere 2 stories at some point.

    Title: Moral Disorder
    Author: Margaret Atwood
    Narrator: Lorelei King
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 40 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-20-07
    Publisher: Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd.
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 5 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
Margaret Atwoods brilliant collection of short stories follows the life of a single character, seen as a girl growing up the 1930s, a young woman in the 50s and 60s, and, in the present day, half of a couple, no longer young, reflecting on the new state of the world.
Each story focuses on the ways relationships transform a characters life: a womans complex love for a married man, the grief upon the death of parents and the joy with the birth of children, the realisation of what growing old with someone you love really means.
By turns funny, lyrical, incisive, earthy, shocking, and deeply personal, Moral Disorder displays Atwoods celebrated storytelling gifts and unmistakable style to their best advantage.
    Critic Reviews:
"Shaped by a Darwinian perspective, political astuteness, autobiographical elements, and a profound trust in literature, Atwood's stories evoke humankind's disastrous hubris and phenomenal spirit with empathy and bemusement." (Booklist)
"Her stories are sophisticated, reticent, ornate, stark, supple, stiff, savage or forgiving; they are exactly what she wants them to be. They are stories from the prime of life." (Times Literary Supplement)
    Members Reviews:
A stylish, well-written story that leads you...?
Atword writes about the life of a woman who doesn't fit well into any of the moral "boxes" of her day. Like all her books, the works are precise and the phrases and tempo remain interesting. The content is another matter.
I like Margaret Atwood because she's a very good writer, because she turn a phrase, and because she's Canadian. Sadly, after reading some of her (far) better books, I hung in there on this one...hoping for something big...or at least worthwhile. The work dies in slow and unnoticable death.
Keep browsing...you can do better than this.
    Respectfully sorry, Ms. Atwood.
