    Resumen del editor:
Paul Baumer enlisted with his classmates in the German army of World War I. Youthful and enthusiastic, they become soldiers. But despite what they have learned, they break into pieces under the first bombardment in the trenches. And as horrible war plods on year after year, Paul holds fast to a single vow: to fight against the principles of hate that meaninglessly pits young men of the same generation but different uniforms against each other, if only he can come out of the war alive.

Very descriptive writing style - Paris around 1870. The Dover Thrift edition works well for reading the French and English versions parallel to one another.
    Nana
This is one of my favorite novels, so I knew the story was good already. As far as the book itself goes it was in perfect condition and came quickly with no problems. If you like classic literature then you may love this book <3
    Nana
I like Zola's writings and have read quite a few. I particularly like Germinal, which I re-read about a year ago. I recently re-read Nana. I found it uninteresting. There is little reference to the world at large - other than ones own awareness that France is fast approaching 1870. The plodding through Nana's various relationships gets tiring
    Great novel, bad edition
I absolutely loved the story and I find Zola's style much easier to follow than many other 19th century French authors. If I read this book again I will buy a different copy because this Dover Thrift Edition is littered with misspellings and other errors.
    Better than expected
Bought this item for myself, however my father got a hold of it and is reading it now. I will have to wait my turn.

    Eros/Thanatos
This is a monstrous, depraved, beautiful and lofty book, obviously the work of a genius - the last third I found completely riveting, but I have to say it felt like I was being pulled deeper and deeper into the dark vortex of Flaubert's psychology, where terrible brutality is mixed with rapturous lyricism - hate and love, pleasure and pain become one and the same - very disturbing, actually - EROS/THANATOS unleashed. I now have certain images in my head that will be difficult to forget. This was probably one of the most violent and disturbing things that I've read; it's a book obsessed with sadomasochistic impulses, on an epic scale; it's quite troubling because it makes the reader complicit by joining in the eroticization of torture and killing, of human barbarity and degradation; nevertheless, I was compelled to keep reading - because of Flaubert's amazing artistry, I couldn't look away. "Salammbo" makes the horrors of battle real and visceral, while turning hell-on-earth into intoxicating poetry - a very strange but beautiful work. The original french readers of "Salammbo" (1862) must have experienced quite a shock; it was a financial success (following the sensation of "Madame Bovary"), but it wasn't translated into english until much later - now I think I understand why.
The true nature of Salammbo (more an archetype than a mortal heroine) isn't revealed to the reader, or to her, until the final pages of the book. What were Flaubert's motivations for writing this novel? I guess he had to get it out of his system; he's like a dangerous, intoxicated, wild animal, filled with blood lust, who can transform his cravings into mystical poetry. But perhaps this represents Flaubert's personal portrait of humanity, expressed through ancient history and myth: a twisted, eternal conflict encompassing light and dark, masculine and feminine, civilization and chaos, war and religion, mystic and erotic, but essentially, when stripped of it's outer forms, barbaric.
this novel was amazing, a hallucinatory journey back into the ancient world
Big help to know the history of the mercenary revolt in ancient Carthage. Once I understood it, this novel was amazing, a hallucinatory journey back into the ancient world.
    Worthy of a wider audience
Even though I agree with the reviewers who stated that this novel is nothing like Madame Bovary, I tend to see this as a strength of a talented world writer. In this novel Carthage is in its death throes as an imperial nation---eternally at war and unable to meet the daily needs of its citizens. They are forced to believe in an ecstatic religious cult that demands the sacrifice of humans. Flaubert's language in this novel even mirrors the internal frenzy of the citizens who always have to be prepared for yet another war. (I finished this novel in one day, I could not put it down.)
Salammbo needs to be read as a novel; not as a work of history in order to truly understand what Flaubert intentions were.
A blood bath with little feeling.
Death, mayhem, blood, torture, and no sympathetic characters; except, perhaps, the poor. The characters are petty, dishonest, conniving, and superstitious.

    Robinson Crusoe
Its a good story but a bit slow by todays writting standards. If you enjoy 20,000 leagues under the sea and around the world in 80 days you will like this. The story is good for the imagination but can drag at times.
    Milestone in history of books
If you, as we probably all did have seen the movie, then you have some expectations to the book. To me this was a venture in old times, when I have read the book as a teenager.
So, I dont have to say much of the story. It is well known and a milestone in history of books. The reading is smoothly and doesnt lack of emphatcy. All in all, I enjoyed it much.
    Tedious
While the story is familiar, this original telling truly drags. The first person perspective is probably the only reason I was able to finish this dull time suck.
    A Great Classic
If you could sum up Robinson Crusoe in three words, what would they be?
    Wishing was me
What did you like best about this story?
    The entire book
    Any additional comments?
A beautiful historical escape into the past and wishing it were the present.
One of the great titles of all time?
Robinson Crusoe is a book that takes a long time of getting into. the first few hours are an unorganized slop of a bunch of his adventures before getting into the main story. this might be a book that is better to buy in print than on audio. John Lesault, the narrator does a great job with this. he has a, not altogether interesting, but not boring voice.
An interesting listen if you have time to listen to it in chunks. Otherwise Robinson Crusoe is not really worth listening to as you will get lost in the story and not know what is going on.

But gradually he finds himself drawn to the beautiful Albertine, without guessing how much she is to mean to him in the future.

    Editorial Reviews:
In the second of the seven novels that make up Remembrance of Things Past, the young narrator, Marcel, and his grandmother visit the seaside resort of Balbec for his health. Neville Jason seamlessly portrays the parade of characters with subtle changes in inflection - whether Robert de Saint-Loup or Albertine Simenon. In addition to selecting the lyrical piano interludes, Jason has shaped each scene in his clear, measured presentation so the irony, humor and richness of Proust's observations engage the listener intimately.
    Members Reviews:
I DO like to be beside the seaside
Within a Budding Grove is the second book of the seven-volume In Search of Lost Time / Rememberances. For audiobook purposes, it is divided into two parts, this being the second. As with this entire series, it is beautifully narrated by Neville Jason. This particular section covers the first visit of the narrator to the seaside town of Balbec. At first he is very much in the company of his grandmother and her friends and acquaintances, but he later forms three significant friendships. The first is with the astonishingly good-looking (and finely dressed) Marquis de Saint-Loup. The second is with the painter, Elstir. The third, and most intriguing, is with Albertine Simonet, one of the little band of seemingly wild young girls holidaying in Balbec. Proust is an unhurried author, who delights in ordinary events, and this book is no exception. If you like really wonderful writing, a relaxed pace, and are after a break from a diet of thrillers, you will really like this.
    Good beyond Hope
I vainly seek out superlatives with which to describe this masterpiece, and Neville Jason's rendition of this masterpiece. This part of this book is, quite simply, the best work I've ever read (or have had read to me). It is so moving, the writing so powerful, that it left me speechless every time I listened to it, and I couldn't wait till the next time I could get to it.
In this volume, the author reaches adolescence, and like every young man, is moved by the wonder and beauty and mystery of young women. This volume tells of the author's early experiences, and sometimes surprising success, in seeking the companionship of the objects of his heart's desire. It is charming, lovely, funny, surprising, sometimes thrilling, satisfying on every level.
And as for the narration of Mr. Jason -- this rendition is so good that I had to get the book, but when I started reading, I realized in the first paragraph how much I missed Mr. Jason's narration, how much he adds to the experience.
For those who love life, literature, and the finest that writing has to offer.
    This is part 1 again
This volume, while tagged as pasrt 2, is actually PART ONE. Can someone at Audible please post PART 2?

With Mr. Spaceman, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Robert Olen Butler has created a magical and humorous contemporary fable that captures the state of humanity at the cusp of a new millennium - as seen through the uniquely sensitive perspective of an empathetic extraterrestrial. The night before the turn of the millennium, a tour bus bound for a Louisiana casino is suddenly beamed inside a spaceship hovering high above Earth's surface. As its 12 passengers emerge nervously from the vehicle, they come face-to-face with the being who has brought them aboard, a 16-fingered, zoot-suited alien named Desi. Over the course of the next 24 hours, Desi will seek their help as he readies himself for the final phase of the mysterious mission he has traveled across the galaxies to fulfill.

    Editorial Reviews:
Frightening, aggressive, dangerous - everything you thought you knew about visitors from space is wrong. MR. SPACEMAN, by Pulitzer Prize winner Robert Olen Butler, will make you wish you could spend more time with his kind. And wait until you meet his lovely wife Edna!
If you're a fan of hard science fiction, this may not be the listen for you. Too irreverent, too giggle-inducing, too, well, fun. But if you enjoy a rich story with plenty of amusing characters and a cynical look at American culture, throw on those headphones and try this one. And speaking of American culture, Arte Johnson, of Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In, is the narrator here and does a fantastic job of bringing these characters to life.
    Critic Reviews:
"[Butler] balances the playfulness of alien lore with the weight of religion, marrying the comic and the tragic with mastery." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    Mr. Spaceman
Mr. Spaceman is a wonderful book - one of the best audiobooks thus far. Really unforgettable. Butler's premise for the book is clever and amusing. The narration of by the 12 earthlings gives a range of emotions and experiences. I loved them all.
Exceptional narration of a startlingly original story
Not a dropped stitch in this compelling story of one spaceman's struggle to understand humanity by interviewing iconic yet believable abductees. The narrator by voice and especially by pacing immerses us in a world of richly differentiated characters. The author has wisdom to convey and, thankfully, much of it is unexpected from beginning to end. Listen to this one.
    Cute, but...
I actually liked the premise of this book, and found it to have a sweet quality. However, it's always disturbing to be surprised by crass vocabulary when the rest of the story doesn't contain any. This element was so out of sync with the other parts that it left me with bad taste. It's unfortunate too, because I actually liked the Spaceman character a lot and the ending was predictable but had a twist.
A little of this goes a long way
Arte Johnson does a great job reading this book that has some interesting ideas but runs far too long. Descriptions of descriptions do little to add value to what should have been an excellent short story.

    Title: Through the Looking Glass
    Author: Lewis Carroll
    Narrator: Flo Gibson

Length: 2 hrs and 55 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-16-99
    Publisher: Recorded Books
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 4 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
Lewis Carroll followed up his classic Alice's Adventures in Wonderland with the equally wondrous sequel Through the Looking Glass, a timeless tale that imaginatively blends laughter, mischief, and magic. The story begins on a cold, snowy day, when Alice must stay inside. She decides to play a game of make-believe, but the game becomes real when Alice steps through a mirror - and into another world! Desperate to return to her real life, Alice faces a series of bizarre adventures and unforgettable characters, including Humpty Dumpty, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, and the Jabberwocky. This astonishing presentation of Through the Looking Glass transports us into Carroll's - and Alice's - frightfully funny fantasy world, delighting children of all ages.
    Editorial Reviews:
Tweedledum and Tweedledee, the fabled Jabberwocky, or that vexing concept of every-other-day jam (you can have ityesterdayand tomorrowbut never today!) the weird world of Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking-Glass has seeped as deeply into the world's imagination as its predecessor, Alice in Wonderland. And yet the world Alice encounters on the other side of her looking glass mirror is best seen - or, in this case, heard - firsthand. Narrator Flo Gibson strives for a wistful humor in a performance that transcends the less-than-stellar audio quality of this classic book.
    Critic Reviews:
"Flo Gibson gives a fine rendition of this literary classic." (Media Review)

    The Best Kindle Option Available
I took a gamble on buying this edition when no one had reviewed it yet. I tried several other Kindle editions available and had found them truly appalling in terms of formatting. This however, is significantly better, featuring well structured chapter breaks and all the original illustrations, which enhance the story a lot.
Furthermore, considering it contains both books, plus the excellent Hunting of the Snark, it is a fantastic price.
However, there are still some glaring mistakes, such as some formatting bugs in a few of the poems and spelling errors in places (such as at the start of Looking Glass, where some of the Ls are replaced with 1s - I guess a scanner did the 'writing here').
5 stars for the great price and superior formatting over the other options. -1 star for the glaring lack of proof reading from the publisher.
    Good book
A classic children's book that never gets old. I bought it for my daughter and we read a chapter every night. The only issue I have is that it's a little smaller than I expected, but that's okay.
    Fun and ridiculous, as intended
Playful poetry may be more amusing for adults. In any case I finally learned about the Boogum. What fun! Theres some discussion that there is a hidden message in his poem. If so, I admit to it being way over my head!
    Italicized Text?!
I really wanted to like this--the original illustrations are beautifully reproduced--but bizzarely, half the books are italicized in their entirety, making them pretty much unreadable.
