More than an excellent police procedural
PREY ON PATMOS is the third book in the Chief Inspector Andreas Kaldis series and, like its predecessors, is an entertaining police procedural and an engrossing look at twenty-first century social problems against the background of an ancient culture.
"There was an unusual cadence to the man's walk. Maybe it was the uneven stone lane. But he'd walked this path ten thousand times, thought not so soon before first light. Still, he knew it well enough. He paused, as if to listen, then moved five paces and paused again....Perhaps he should have been looking as carefully as he listened, but it wouldn't have mattered. The men stood quietly at the bottom of the path, just beyond where it opened in the the town square. He could not see them." In an instant, his throat cut, Kalogeros Vassilis lies dead in the town square of Patmos, the island home of monasteries built on the holy ground where St. John wrote the Book of Revelations. Vassilis was an old man who had lived a life of devotion to his faith. Why would anyone kill him?
The answer to that question becomes the responsibility of Chief Inspector Andreas Kaldis and his partner, Yianni Kouros. Andreas is the head of the Greek Police's Special Crimes Division and the murder of a monk on Patmos just before Easter, the most important day in the Christian calendar, is a very special crime. Andreas isn't just confronted with satisfying the demands of the government functionaries who want credit for a quick solution of the murder; Andreas is up against the formidable power and position of the Eastern Orthodox Church.
As they investigate, Andreas and Yianni learn that Vassilis was a committed researcher, using the internet to unravel the rules that governed the choice of the Ecumenical Patriarch, the leader of all the branches of the Orthodox church. To the secular world such issues hardly seem the stuff of life and death.

The best yet in a consistently charming series." (Booklist)
    Members Reviews:
    Always one of my favorites!
I have read this and listened to it over and over. The writing in engaging. I love that about Wittig-Albert's style. The narration is fittingly perfect for the era.
    Don't like the bossy 'narrator'
I listened to the first book in the series, then skipped to this one to hear about the romance between Beatrix and Will Heelis. There were times I almost quit listening because of the annoying 'narrator'. Why, Ms. Albert, why did you think you needed to add this? Did you think your readers aren't clever enough, so that they need everything spelled out for them? I doubt I'll listen to any more now. But the performer does a very good job of reading, and the overall story - except for the intrusive narrative parts - is up to the standard.

    Critic Reviews:
Packed with action and wonderfully funny characters, this series debut is a masterstroke of hilarityand is sure to appeal to fans of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum. (Library Journal)
    Members Reviews:
    A great listen
I breezed through this audiobook! K.J. Larsen had me hooked from the beginning and completely wrapped up in the story of Cat DeLuca.
The chemistry in Cat's big Italian family was hilarious and spot on. The story was action packed and full of mystery.
I thought Vanessa Hart did a great job narrating this title and I'll look for more of her work in the future.
    Great listen!
    fun
fun story but no time to think about writing a review the new York NY and I am looking forward to the new York NY and I am looking yy
    Not worth finishing
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
This is a VERY frothy book, and very imitative of Janet Evanovitch and Stephanie Plum. Somebody who does not mind how derivative the work is might enjoy its similarity to Evanovitch's series.
How could the performance have been better?
The narrator veered between an Italian American and a southern accent. I think it would have been better if she had not attempted accents at all.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Liar, Liar?
Way too many scenes involving the mother of the P.I.
    Boring Boring
While the story was decent, I got really tired of hearing about food and shoes.
    Highly Entertaining
Witty, fast paced, good crime drama with an excellent dash of sarcasm. If you like Sue Grafton and Kyra Davis, you will love this...

But he feels there's more to it than that.
Why, for instance, is Superintendent Toby Tench leaving his devious Special Branch footprints all over Cicero's patch? And why does he want the courts to release Jane Maguire on bail after she makes a confession? Tench plays his cards close to his chest, and Cicero finds the odds are stacked against him both personally and professionally.

    Right on his game
I've always loved Reginald Hill's Dalziel and Pascoe novels. The others usually pale in comparison but then I hadn't met Dog Cicero. This is a thumping great heart pounder of a thriller and the main character has just the right amount of invincibility and vulnerability. The twists and turns don't always work that smoothly but the straight up and down action is terrific. A rewarding listen.
    Will be getting another Hill
First Reginald Hill I've listened to. Won't be the last. The story did deteriorate a bit at the end, where all of a sudden the author seemed to scramble to end it -- but it still kept my attention, with enough twists (some a bit too expected) to keep me hooked. I already downloaded my next Reginald Hill -- so obviously this was not a disappointment.
    Excellent mystery/thriller
Mr. Hill is extremely talented with this clever tale. The hero is no superman, rather a calculating loner. I can't imagine anyone bored with this book.
Slow start but warmed up nicely
Police procedural that involves the IRA. I am not a big fan of Irish civil war books, but was willing to overlook it in favor of solid writing. Narration was faultless.
    Hill is a great author
Another great stand alone novel, a little sad as usual, but not grim. This is an older novel and I think as with a lot of novels of its era and place there is some reference to the IRA. However, it is not over political so it can be enjoyed for its wonderful writing.

    Editorial Reviews:
Arthur Upfield's The Bone is Pointed> follows Inspector Bonaparte who solves mysteries in the Australian outback. Published in the 1940's, this story not only offers up a good mystery but also a portrait of the aborigines and Australia in the early 20th century. Peter Hoskig tackles this story with verve. He speaks with a clear Australian accent while developing the characters believably, giving each his own attributes. Meanwhile, his varied pacing makes the story easy to follow. Mystery lovers and history buffs alike will have fun with the Inspector Bonaparte Mysteries.

Click "next" if you are on the fence for this one
This book is cookie cutter, if you listen to the first half hour and stop it, then write on a piece of paper what you think the ending will be - you will be right, as a matter of fact unless this is the first book you have ever read, nothing happens in this story that is not predictable. I ended up listening to the whole thing thinking that something had to happen to take it out of the mould, but it never did, it just plods along like a high school writing project.
better use of your time out there, not recommended.
    A fine Boney Novel
I discovered the Boney series about 10 years ago. I am glad that Audible has made them available. This is one of the better reads of the series, an early book in the series and one that gives a good introduction to Detective Bonaparte and Austrailia in the 1930s.
    Always entertaining!
Peter Hosking is the best I've heard for audio characterizations. I do love these stories.
    the bone is pointed
Would you consider the audio edition of The Bone Is Pointed to be better than the print version?
    as good
What other book might you compare The Bone Is Pointed to and why?
    the sands of windee
Which character as performed by Peter Hosking was your favorite?
    bony
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
    all australian as ever
    Any additional comments?
arthur upfields portral of the times gone by and the mysterys are well in tune
    A good Aussie tale
Where does The Bone Is Pointed rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
    Smack bang in the middle.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
"Saw it coming from a mile off" would be a better description. But that was part of the fun. What kept me going was the pleasure of an Australian story, after way too many listens from the other side of the planet.
Have you listened to any of Peter Hoskings other performances before? How does this one compare?
This is my first, and an enjoyable listen it was.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
    An occasional small smile.
    Any additional comments?
This is not highbrow literature, and has its fair share of cardboard cut out characters, but they were fun cutouts.

    Members Reviews:
I could not follow the story due to the narrator
I usually enjoy Ann Cleeves books but the narrator drove me crazy. I felt confused about who was saying what . So I will return this book and select another Ann Cleeves story read by a different reader. Very disappointing.
    SLOW oh so very slow....
this was a very SLOW story -- it seemed very dragged out - with the denouement repeated in case we hadn't got it. Did not enjoy the performer, accents slipping and not maintained. Dreadful midlands accent for one character. Not a book to listen to whilst driving as I dozed off a couple of times (safe in armchair).
Very little in way of any exciting action, felt I had done well to stick with it to the end.
stuck with it but not Vera
Is there anything you would change about this book?
    It seemed slow
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
faster moving and a tiny touch of humour
What about Gordon Griffins performance did you like?
    acceptable
Do you think Blue Lightning needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
    no done to death
    Any additional comments?
not Vera. Amazing how differant it is.
A rather boring delivery for an exciting story
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, especially if you have enjoyed the BBC series because it is so TOTALLY different that you are getting another Jimmy Perez story, whoopee. But don't listen in the car, see comments on narrator.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Blue Lightning?
The story is exciting, no old bodies in this one [see White Nights and Red Bones] all fresh and recent! The ending is a bit of a shock and I found myself saying "Oh no, that can't happen".
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Gordon Griffin's delivery is sonorous, and his rather slow delivery and the curious way his voice seems to die away at the end of sentences made me want to shout "Get on with it, man!" There are also a couple of times that he has read a sentence putting the stress on the wrong part making a complete nonsense of the meaning. His accents are laughable especially the Shetland one. Everyone sounded as if they were 90 years old. Also get the readers to check how things are pronounced, a glaring one was Whooper swan, it's said Hooper not Wooper. This is the third Shetland book that I have listened to using him as a narrator. Luckily the new book -Dead Water- has a new narrator, Kenny Blyth, he's brilliant, lovely Scottish voice!
    Clever whodunit
This book helped me to place events on the correct order as I started reading mid way through these books enjoyable but sad sequel

Great Mystery - Lots of Good Twists
Another good story by T. Jefferson Parker! Great development and plotting of very flawed characters in various hues of grey. I wasn't crazy about the narrator. His phrasing and pace don't fit Parker's lyrical style. The narrator for Parker's series of books about ATF agent Sean Ozburn was great and and someone I recommend narrate all of Parker's books.
    Maybe More for Guys
Can't figure out why I didn't like this more-- unless it's because it's more of a "guy" mystery. Some in this genre don't appeal as much to women-- not because I can't do macho or gruesome, but the perspective of the narrator doesn't translate as well. So, meh.

    Publisher's Summary:
National best-selling author Earlene Fowler delivers the 14th installment in her popular Benni Harper series. Following the tradition she began in Fools Puzzle and has continued through Tumbling Blocks, Fowler crafts a tale as enthralling as the quilting pattern she selected for the title. As Benni becomes embroiled in a new mystery, listeners can be sure she wont rest until she corrals the truth and hog-ties the culprits.
    Critic Reviews:
"Set in 1997, Fowler's folksy 14th Benni Harper mystery (after 2007's Tumbling Blocks) finds the avid quilter, museum curator, and reluctant sleuth readying herself for the annual San Celina (Calif.) County Mid-State Fair. Racial tensions revolving around the fair's first black general manager, Levi Clark; Levi's half-white daughter, Jazz; and Jazz's various suitors stir the plot. So, too, does the visit from Arkansas of Benni's great-aunt, Garnet Wilcox. Garnet and her sister, Dove, Benni's grandmother, get along like two bobcats trapped in a burning outhouse. A valued African-American quilt stolen from a fair exhibit and a corpse in another exhibit add fuel to the fire. Fowler's congenial mix of humor (prickly, surprising Garnet applies lessons learned from mystery books and cop shows), folklore (the history of black cloth dolls), and murder makes this Agatha Awardwinning series as much fun to visit as a county fair and a likely ribbon winner." (Publishers Weekly)

    love it!
I wish audible would have the whole series. I really enjoyed this! had to go to the library to get the whole book series.
    Ms Fowler did it again
Would you listen to State Fair again? Why?
Yes, even though they are mysteries I love to revisit these books. I am a big fan of this author and love her descriptions of life in small town California.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Benni Harper, I loved her from the first book
What about Johanna Parkers performance did you like?
    all good
More about history then mystery, but still good
Where does State Fair rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Not the best, but not sorry I listened
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
Actually, the history she gave was interesting, but the mystery was not so enthralling
What about Johanna Parkers performance did you like?
She has a good, easy-listenng style
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    No
    Any additional comments?
Well, I expected more of a mystery, but got more of a drama--lots of information about personal lives not tied to the actual whodunit. If you go into it with this realization, then you will not be disappointed.

    Classic Wallander
Not the best of the Wallander series, still magic. Too much angst about the past to start. Then, when the plot thickens, wonderful mystery and minds focused on the solution to a national disgrace, let alone a murder. The unravelling of a multi-national company and crime is thought provoking while foreign to most people's experience, including mine. It's so hard for someone in the 99% to comprehend the lives of the 1% I almost lost sight of the emptiness it must be to be mega-wealthy, the only reason for life to get more. This is a profound literary illustration of the greed, soulessnes, and narcissism that seems to rule the world, all wrapped around a murder investigation. Marvelous read.
Sean Barrett excellent as always with the delivery of the story.
    Classic Mankell
What I love about Mankell's characters is their depth. I never wonder why someone behaves the way they do - their actions arise from the sense of real personality that Mankell endows them with.
Wallander is my (new) favorite Detective.
Sean Barrett brought this fantastic story to life. The Man who Smiled has launched me onto a path of reading (listening to) every Mankell story I can. I could not have been better entertained. I've since read "The Pyramid" and will work my way through the collection.
    Thank you Audible!!!
    Good Listen
I can never get enough of Henning Mankell and usually download a book by him after a dissappointing listen as I'm guaranteed to enjoy listening to anything my this author and great reader too
    Classic Wallender
The joy of an unabridged reading is that the story takes its time to unfold and the listener becomes engrossed in the fine detail as well as following the plot. This reading by the incomparable Sean Barrett does exactly that. We find Wallender in a deep depression after shooting a man 18 months earlier and Mankell does not spare us from the depths of his despair. Then a chance encounter takes Wallender back to the police station and involved in a double murder. This is an excellent reading and up to Mankell's usual high standard. Much recommended.
