    Title: A Mortal Terror
    Author: James R. Benn
    Narrator: Peter Berkrot
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 11 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-16-11
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 66 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
Two officers from the American troops stationed in Caserta, Italy, not far from Naples, have been found murdered. The MOs are completely different, and it seems like the officers had no connection to each other, but one frightening fact links the murders: each body was discovered with a single playing card: the Lieutenant, the 10 of hearts; the Captain, the jack of hearts. The message seems to be clear: If the murderer isn't apprehended, the higher ranks will be next.
Billy is sent to Italy for the investigation, which grows increasingly sinister. But he has other things on his mind, too. His girlfriend, Diana, is on a very dangerous spy mission, and Billy doesn't know when - or if - he'll see her again. To make matters worse, Billy's just learned that his baby brother, Danny, is being sent over to Europe as an infantry replacement, an incredibly dangerous assignment. And all around him, he sees GIs suffering from combat fatigue preparing for another battle. As the invasion at Anzio begins, Billy needs to keep a cool head amidst fear and terror as the killer calculates his next moves.

    Different Narrator
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
The narrator changed. While he may be very good I was confused. The charecters that I knew didn't sound the same. I couldn't follow the story because of this. I didn't listen to more than 2-3 chapters.
What was most disappointing about James R. Benns story?
I didn't follow the story because Billy Boyle wasn't the same.
How could the performance have been better?
    Keep the original narrator.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
No. I couldn't follow the story and didn't finish the book.
    Skip books 6 & 7
What would have made A Mortal Terror better?
Woeful narration. Voice is wrong and pace off. Wait for Marc Vietor to return.
What did you like best about this story?
    Good story
Would you be willing to try another one of Peter Berkrots performances?
    No
Changing narrators is not a good thing
What disappointed you about A Mortal Terror?
It's the Boyle series I know and love, but Billy has changed. There's a new narrator and I really think the audio book suffers for it.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Peter Berkrot?
Mark Vietor is Billy Boyle. That's the only person who should narrate this book. From the Boston accent to the Southie attitude. He had it and made the Benn books come alive.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
I'm well into the book but only through sheer force of will. I find myself uninspired to continue to listen.
    Less the the previous books
I too had a hard time with all the American characters suddenly having Southern accents. The story is also not as good as the previous book. The ending was very interesting, but disappointing to me.
    storyline was what I expected
the narrator should learn how to read. British intelligence is not m 15 but MI 5. I can understand one of my kids making this mistake the oldest one is only 5, but when your paid to read a book ya should at least be able to read.

  • All Cry Chaos Audiobook by Leonard Rosen

    Title: All Cry Chaos
Subtitle: The Henri Poincaré Series, Book 1
    Author: Leonard Rosen
    Narrator: Grover Gardner
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 23 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-01-11
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 495 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
All Cry Chaos, a debut thriller by the immensely gifted Leonard Rosen, is a masterful and gripping tale that literally reaches for the heavens.
The action begins when mathematician James Fenster is assassinated on the eve of a long-scheduled speech at a World Trade Organization meeting. The hit is as elegant as it is bizarre. Fensters Amsterdam hotel room is incinerated, yet the rest of the building remains intact. The murder trail leads veteran Interpol agent Henri Poincaré on a high-stakes, world-crossing quest for answers.
Together with his chain-smoking, bon vivant colleague, Serge Laurent, Poincaré pursues a long list of suspects: the Peruvian leader of the Indigenous Liberation Front, Rapture-crazed militants, a hedge-fund director, Fensters elusive ex-fiancée, and a graduate student in mathematics. Poincaré begins to make progress in America, but there is a prodigious hatred trained on himsome unfinished business from a terrifying former genocide caseand he is called back to Europe to face the unfathomable. Stripped down and in despair, tested like Job, he realizes the two cases might be connectedand he might be the link.
This first installment in the Henri Poincaré series marries sharp, smart mystery to deep religious themes that will keep both agnostics and believers turning pages until the shattering, revelatory end. Anyone who enjoys the work of John le Carré, Scott Turow, Dan Brown, and Stieg Larsson will relish Rosens storytelling and his resourceful, haunted protagonist. Others will appreciate his dazzling prose. Still others, the way he bends the thriller form in unconventional ways toward a higher cause, in the vein of Henning Mankell in The Man from Beijing. In short, All Cry Chaos promises to become a critical success that garners a broad readership throughout the nation and across the globe.
    Critic Reviews:
Only the very best of writers can weave a compelling story from a maze of complicated ideas, and with this deftly crafted novel, Len Rosen has proven himself to be one of them. (Arthur Golden, New York Times best-selling author of Memoirs of a Geisha)
    Members Reviews:
    Not bad.
An interesting plot that introduces an Interpol Investigator trying to locate the killer of an esteemed mathematician, whose elegant discoveries raise many questions.
For a 'new' writer, this is a not bad start to a series.
The Publishers summary is a bit overstated. This is not Stieg Larsson, Henning Mankell or John Le Carre. Leave it at 'European in style' perhaps.
    Grover Gardner reads well,as usual.
It considers the exploitation of people by capitalists, end of days fervour, greed, the effects of war, jusice and law, and a question. If there is an elegant design, does that imply a designer?
If you do enjoy mysteries, look at fractals and wonder and are willing to try a new author, you could well enjoy this one. I expect the stories will get better as the series progresses..
    I wish there were more
This is a good book, if not a great one. Narration is excellent. I won't hold my breath, but I will look forward to the next Poincare mystery (hopefully narrated by Grover).
    Fizzled
End fell apart. Contrived? Uh-huh. Pity since the puzzle was intriguing, but I'm guessing that Rosen didn't have a solution so he kind of crammed one together.

WONDERFUL AUTHOR, AND VERY GOOD STORY LINE.
NICE LITTLE MYSTERY, ANOTHER CAROLYN HAINES CUTE COZY MYSTERY. IT IS SO ENJOYABLE TO HAVE CAROLYN HAINES IN AUDIBLE. THANK YOU AUDIBLE FOR BRINGING US THIS AUTHOR WHO IS JUST A GREAT WRITER. KATE FORBES DOES A WONDERFUL JOB AS NARRATOR. NICE JOB, LADIES.
    What's going on?
Our detectives have somehow become less intelligent as these stories continue. I'm disappointed. It's just a series if poor judgments. No wonder the men are worried, these women don't listen to anyone, not even themselves.

    Publisher's Summary:
A BBC Radio 4 full-cast dramatisation of Val McDermid's best-selling Kate Brannigan mystery Clean Break, starring Charlotte Coleman.
Manchester-based private eye Kate Brannigan is not amused when thieves steal a Monet from a stately home where she had arranged the security. She sets off on a chase that takes her across Europe bringing her head to head with organised crime.
    Members Reviews:
A Short, Fun and Fast-Paced Listen
I really liked McDermid's female PI, Kate Brannigan, in the two earlier novels I have read, and I totally enjoyed this BBC dramatization.
The narrator does a great job as Kate, who is a spunky and creative detective with fighting skills and connections to the less-savory characters of society. The characters are not really deeply developed, as this is a Kate and Plot driven plot - but it's a good, light listen for sure, has some fun twists, and excitement thrown in, too.
If you are not familiar with dramatized audio books - please note: this is not a full reading of the actual book, but rather, the book has been adapted into a script that is performed by various actors. Kind of like watching TV, but no need for visuals. Hence, dramatized books are quite a bit shorter than an actual audio book. Personally, I really enjoy a good dramatized book - often for lulling me to sleep at night instead of dumb TV shows; sometimes they are perfect for a shortish drive; other times they just fill a blank space while I'm cooking or whatever. In any case, all the BBC productions I've listened to are extremely well-done, and this one is no different.
    Dramatization was Excellent
The BBC radio dramatization was excellent. The story line was not very good.
I didn't like the main character, Kate Brannigan, because her personality was rather quirky with one-liners and wise-cracks. Furthermore, she seemed to care less about one of the characters in the story that, because of her actions, contributed to his death.
The plot about the burglaries was boring. The best part was the chase across Europe and the dramatization.

    Publisher: Random House Audiobooks

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
Every morning Hkan von Enke takes a walk in the forest near his apartment in Stockholm. However, one winters day he fails to come home. It seems that the retired naval officer has vanished without trace. Detective Kurt Wallander is not officially involved in the investigation but he has personal reasons for his interest in the case, as Hkans son is engaged to his daughter Linda. A few months earlier, at Hkans 75th birthday party, Kurt noticed that the old man appeared uneasy and seemed eager to talk about a controversial incident from his past career that remained shrouded in mystery. Could this be connected to his disappearance?
When Hkans wife, Louise, also goes missing, Wallander is determined to uncover the truth. His search leads him down dark and unexpected avenues involving espionage, betrayal, and new information about events during the Cold War that threatens to cause a political scandal on a scale unprecedented in Swedish history. The investigation also forces Kurt to look back over his own past and consider his hopes and regrets, as he comes to the unsettling realisation that even those we love the most can remain strangers to us. And then an even darker cloud appears on the horizon....
The return of Kurt Wallander, for his final case, has already caused a sensation around the globe. The Troubled Man confirms Henning Mankells position as the king of crime writing.
    Members Reviews:
    Another Great Mystery
Kurt Wallander solves his last case before descending into dementia. As a Mankell/Wallander fan, I regret writing these words but find this ending somehow appropriate for the dogged detective whose case investigations never faltered despite personal life baggage and the infirmities of aging. The Troubled Man gives us Wallander working on a case of Swedish spys (who knew!)tied to submarines, Russia and the the good old USA while he grows to adore a grandaughter. This story deals the detective some blows with the death of a loved one and his ex-wife's mental health and sobriety problems. Despite his malaise and life's foilbles, the beleaguered policeman ultimately outwits the criminals and he and daughtter Linda come to a more mellowed relationship. The finely etched and eccentric character of Detective Kurt will be missed but perhaps Linda, who is impatient to return to police work, will carry on the Wallander name.
A meditation on life as well as a spy story
It seems a satisfying tradition of Scandinavian detective stories that both the human condition and the individual psyche are examined in them. In the Troubled Man, the plot concerns a disappearance of two people that seems linked to spying dating back to the Cold War. Increasingly emerging from the background is Wallander's attempts to understand what is happening in his body and brain as he ages. He also reflects on the events of his past life and the continuing, in fact growing sadness associated with them. The result is a disquieting meditation on ageing and the fears it evokes within us as well as Henning Mankell's usual compelling storytelling. I find myself continuing to think about this story long after listening to it. The narrator does it full justice.
    Love Wallander
Would you listen to The Troubled Man again? Why?
    Yes.

So when Wolfe is arrested for the attempted murder of John Anson Wychek, a vicious rapist she once prosecuted, Burke deals himself in. That means putting together a distrustful alliance between his underground "family of choice," Wolfe's private network, and a rogue NYPD detective who has his own stake in the outcome.

The deeper he presses, the more gaping holes he finds in the prosecutions case, but shadowy law enforcement agencies seem determined to protect Wychek at all costs, no matter who it sacrifices. Burke ups the ante by re-opening all the old "cold case rape investigations, calls in a lot of markers from both sides of the law, and finally shows all the players why "down here" is no place for tourists.

    Delightful and Vivid Description!
Fun mystery with a strong character's Southern voice filled with humor. I listened at 1.25 the normal speed for any northerners out there! Quirky female protagonist and a mentally damaged macho male lead head up a large and varied cast.
But it was the author's grace at description that teased my senses that was the high point.

    Don't bother
I really wanted to like this book. But, I found it lacking in almost every area. The character and story line were good but not developed enough. The characters were flat and uninteresting. The chapters were 2-3 pages long. I think the short chapters were an attempt to create suspense, but it made the book seem disjointed and disorganized. It was not a good reading experience. I gave it two stars because I liked the idea of the story. It had so much potential.
    Speechless for a headline
I feel compelled to write a review for this book. I have so many mixed feelings about it, most of them not good. First, the narrator did a very good job with the voices and emotions. But the writing of the story is a different issue. I almost asked for a refund after I was finished but just have to explain my reactions to this book on various issues.
#1. Why all the details about cooking of various foods? I understand the inclusions about the cake decorating but not the rest...they had no relevance to the story at all (the wines and the various food dishes had nothing to do with the story overall).
#2. For a fairly short book, there were way too many twists and turns in the plots and characters that is was difficult to keep them all straight.
#3. I felt that the story line was kind of choppy with all of the various aspects of lose connections with all of the characters.
#4. There wasn't very much about the love between the bride and groom and way too little about the relationship between Piper and her guy 'friend'-which was left very unresolved. It was almost like a cliff hanger, which I hate.
#5. There were WAY to many characters without getting the reader more involved in the lives of the characters for us to embrace or hate them. Most of the characters lives were left hanging losely in the end.
I personally like books that draw you into the characters lives (especially in a series of books) that leave you anxious to get the next book to embrace them again in more of the events in their lives. This book didn't do that. In fact, if that murderer had killed off more, it would not have devastated me as such an event would in other books. I do like HEA books but am able to enjoy many books that don't have one. This is definitely not an HEA.
I won't be getting more books from this author and will not be recommending it to anyone.
    Great book!
Loved this book! Can't wait to listen to the next one in the series.
