Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
No, there are so many better examples of the genre. I stopped the book after the first couple of chapters. It's not "bad" exactly. It's more like "meh".
What three words best describe Dan Russells performance?
Dan Russell did an adequate job as narrator. It's just the book itself that couldn't hold my interest.

Love the Author, not the narrator
Would you consider the audio edition of At the Stroke of Madness to be better than the print version?
I love audiobooks because one can be doing other things and still get a lot "read". But, I have been "reading" this series this weekend and have been being driven crazy with a noise in the background of many of the books.....sounds similar to a nail gun going off. Didn't the editor hear this noise? It caused me to get up and check my doors in the middle of the night, only to figure out that it was on the recording.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Yes, love the "cases" and following Maggie's personal life.
Would you be willing to try another one of Tanya Ebys performances?
No, not this narrator - she has driven me crazy this series with her mispronunciations of many things.....like "filet knife" it is not 'fill it', it is 'fil ey'; and U.S. AMRIID - would not be 'use amriid'; rifling - that she kept pronouncing as 'riff ling' instead of 'rahy-fling'. I could go on and on - it might be a good idea for an editor to catch these mistakes. We all make them but, when you are reading a book, it is so distracting to the listener. If I were reading, I would want someone to tell me that I was not pronouncing words correctly.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
    laughed many times
    Any additional comments?
Like the author a lot - usually, really like it when they keep the same narrator - but, not with this series.

When the principal of Hollywood's premier preschool is killed in a hit-and-run accident, public defender turned stay-at-home mom Juliet Applebaum gets off the mommy track - to track down a murderer.
    Members Reviews:
    Surprisingly good
This was a pleasant surprise. Juliet is a pleasant competent woman who is a bit of a busy body. After putting her career on hold to be a stay at home mom, Juliet is bored and restless. She can't help but get involved when she hears about a woman at a preschool being murdered. She really has no business getting involved but Juliet doesn't let that get in the way. Along the way we meet Ruby, Juliet's daughter and Peter, Juliet's husband and a host of friends and foes. All together they are entertaining and fun. This is a good book and I look forward to the next one.
Slow start, but fairly decent ending
If you could sum up Nursery Crimes in three words, what would they be?
    Interesting, funny, almost-predictable
Who was your favorite character and why?
Juliet was my favorite character. She is an educated woman, who chose to stay home with her children, yet did not become an automaton.
    Which scene was your favorite?
The scene that was my favorite was when Juliet gets shot.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
When Juliet gives birth was a moving scene
Annoying characters, mystery not so mysterious
What would have made Nursery Crimes better?
I am not someone who actively tries to solve the mystery when reading a mystery novel. I have even read books with a somewhat weak mystery and still given them high ratings because I really enjoyed reading about the characters. But unfortunately for this book, it didn't really have either thing to recommend it. There came a point when the solution should have been obvious to our heroine but it wasn't. I probably could have gotten over it if I liked Juliet more. But I didn't. I read this book because I had read Bad Mother which is basically a memoir by the same author. I knew this character was somewhat autobiographical. Like Waldman, Juliet Applebaum is a former public defender who has become a stay at home mom and is not finding that fulfilling. She is so bored by daily interactions with her 2 year old that she decides to investigate what may be a murder. I know as well as anyone that it can be mind numbingly dull to play mommy and baby trains with a two year old, but still I couldn't get behind her motive to get involved. Then she does a bunch of things that made me cringe, showing up at funerals or homes of the bereaved just to stick her nose in. I really prefer my sleuth have a better motivation than finding her toddler boring especially if she is going to do things like that. I also can't ignore that other people's bratty two year olds are annoying, but if there is anything more annoying than a bratty two year old it is an adult imitating the voice of a bratty two year old. I know Ruby is supposed to be cute but the narration of her was not enjoyable to listen too. Think I'll pass on the rest of the series.
    Entertaining
Having greatly enjoyed Ayelet Waldman's autobiographical "Bad Mother" in paperback, I was keen to listen to some of her fiction.

    Members Reviews:
    Romanic
Love all his books. He has a special way of writing that makes you impatient for his next book to come out.
    Another Bill Crider Mystery
This is the second book Iâve read in this series with Sheriff Dan Rhodes. This story is rather tongue-in-cheek because it is about a romance writersâ convention taking place in Blacklin County. âEveryone wants to write a romance novel â or a murder mystery.â
Because there are so many possible culprits, the interactions arenât as snappy and the characters arenât as well-defined as the other book I read. Significantly less interaction takes place between Rhodes and his wife, Ivy.
Blacklin County is still the scene of a bevy of eccentric characters. This time out, two characters die and Dan Rhodes comes closer to death than any person would want.
Two former residents of Blacklin County who have made it in photography (a la Fabio) or the literary world (as a published romance author), come back for a book signing and writerâs convention. It doesn't take long for passions and anger to flare. Before long, a fire tries to consume the building were the writers are meeting.
I listened to an audio version of this novel; reader George Guidall made this book come alive.
Reviewing: "A Romantic Way To Die" by Bill Crider
Death at a writer's conference as a theme is something that every author does at some point in a series. It also is a frequent theme for websites where entrants may even win a trip to the sponsoring writer's conference. It is so overdone it is clichéd. Yet, it is done because as a thematic plot setting, the idea does work and brings in a new cast of characters, albeit temporary, into a series.
"A Romantic Way To Die" the eleventh book in the series featuring Sheriff Dan Rhodes uses such a device. Local author Vernell Lindsey whose recent published romance novel "Wild Texas Wind" has taken off much to the chagrin of several local folks. After a book signing at the local Wal-mart she soon will be hosting a writer's conference nearby in Obert at the former college campus. The buildings which have been the setting for a couple of novels earlier in the series are finally restored. They will be the site for the writer's conference featuring local as well as non-local authors, a famous local guy turned male model used on numerous romance covers, and a big time New York agent.
Sheriff Dan Rhodes doesn't much care and thinks the whole idea of a writer's conference consisting of a bunch of authors talking about writing books is pretty much silly. That is, until the deaths start happening. Then the angst driven world of writing becomes very important as he tries to stop the killing and write his own justice filled ending.
This novel in the series plows no real new ground character wise as it enjoyably works its way to a satisfying end.

    Loved this one
Would you listen to Talking to the Dead again? Why?
Yes, eventually. Fiona is an interesting character and I've enjoyed getting to know her,
What did you like best about this story?
It's a good solid crime story which is well paced and kept me interested right up to the end. I really like the main character, Fiona Griffiths, and wanted to know how she was going to deal with what was going on around her.
What does Siriol Jenkins bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?
She reads it very well. I wouldn't have had a clue how to pronounce all the Welsh place names.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, I raced through it, listening to it at every possible opportunity.
    Any additional comments?
I downloaded book 2 in the series as soon as I finished.
    Great Read/ Hear
What was one of the most memorable moments of Talking to the Dead?
Love the Figthing and the 'Material Arts' Teacher
    Any additional comments?
The story is well paced and goes deeply into the emotions or non emotions of our fascinating detective.
A good Krimi with some interesting twists. Sensitive Storytelling
I needed to get used to the Storyteller (female) but now I have warmed up to the voice.
Still -1 Star because of the 'Geting used to Period' and not beeing able to Jumpstart instantly with her
    Too much tedious detail
when i read the overview for this novel I was really looking forward to listening to it.

Drenched in atmosphere and danger, Stephen Booth's relentless new thriller builds to a shock finale that will catch even the most seasoned suspense readers off guard.
    Members Reviews:
    So depressing and so repetitive
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Not really. Every single book in this series gasses on and on and on about all the place names the Peak District, and waxes rhapsodic about what a super special it is. We get it already. Move on. Plus the dynamic between Diane Fry and Ben Cooper never seems to change or develop. She's a bag and he's a pushover. Duly noted. The whole series is getting hackneyed.
Would you recommend Dead and Buried to your friends? Why or why not?
No, for the reasons noted above. Character development is sadly lacking, and I feel like the scenery is its own (major) character.
Did Mike Rogers do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
I like his Gavin Murphin. Completely captures the character.
Could you see Dead and Buried being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
    No.
    Any additional comments?
I used to love this series, but there is no longer anything original about it, and the characters haven't developed in any meaningful way.
    ridiculous
What disappointed you about Dead and Buried?
...tell half a story...cut it off with no conclusion...call it a 'shocking' ending
Has Dead and Buried turned you off from other books in this genre?
    No, just this writer.
What about Mike Rogerss performance did you like?
    Unaffected and natural.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Dead and Buried?
    ...it's already been cut
    Any additional comments?
...a stupid effort at being 'original'
Gripping -- can't wait until the next one!
A bit slow at times, but still good mystery with an anticipated ending. I look forward to further development of the characters in the next novel!
As always, Mike Rogers' performance is "spot on" and the Devonshire setting is perfect.
Audible, when will the earlier mysteries in this series become available??
Superb story and a cliffhanger ending
I recently discovered Stephen Booth and this is the second story I've listened to. So obviously there is a lot of history between DC Ben Cooper and DC Fry that i'm not yet privy to. That being said I love these books. I have family in the peak district and it makes me very homesick when I listen and hear village and town names that are so familiar.

    For genre fans only
    Any additional comments?
A crime procedural written when Kennedy was president about a sniper killing seemingly random people. A vaguely described orgy plays a central role. Decent but for genre fans only. Bechdel test: Fail.
Dick Hill is excellent as always.
    87th Precinct Very Long Story
Typical characters but exceedingly too long. Unlikely plot though possible somewhere. Not action oriented. Kept waiting for some level of action and murders happened suddenly with only tipoff lead-in to actual shooting. Generally like this series and liked about 10 others I have read so I will try another audio and hope for the best.

    Publisher's Summary:
A rich man and a poor man are found dead of gunshot wounds outside a seedy bar on Barrington Street. The police declare it a murder-suicide, but bluesman/lawyer Monty Collins suspects it's a double murder. Helped by his friend, Father Brennan Burke, and hindered by his femme fatale law partner, Felicia Morgan, Monty explores the dark side of Halifax society: hookers, drug addicts, boozers, gamblers and people desperate to cover up a series of parties that got way out of hand. A threat of blackmail, and turmoil with his estranged wife Maura, have Monty singing the blues, lashing out at his closest friends, and spending far too much time in the bars of Halifax.
    Members Reviews:
Great Series - Good Book - Serious Flaw
Another strong entry into the Collins-Burke series. Like the earlier entries, if you are looking for fast paced police procedural mysteries, this isn't it. Instead you tend to wander through the mystery at a leisurely pace and along the way, meet some very interesting characters. The Halifax location also adds to the experience for me and Emery always takes us on a tour. This entry does have one bombshell in it that throws another monkey wrench into Monty Collins quest to reunite with his estranged wife.
The serious flaw? Emery has managed to create the world's most annoying child character in any book I've ever read. Collins daughter Normie sounds about 2 years old speaking in whiney baby-talk most of the time. She is supposed to be 8 or 9 and very bright, but she sounds like a caricature, not a real child. Emery's other characters sound real to me. Part of the problem lies with Normie's voice as read by Christian Rummel, the otherwise excellent narrator on this series. But the fault lays largely with the author. I cannot figure out why she felt the need to make the world's most annoying child a fairly major character in this series. She doesn't add to the plot. Normie needs to fade to the background quickly. I don't think she does fade though and that could keep me from reading future books in the series.
    Such a disappointment
I read the first in this series and loved it. Loved the characters...could not wait to follow them further. Second book was kind of a let down (attributed it to the subject matter and it getting in the way). Then I downloaded 'Barrington Street Blues,' the third one in the series...and I could not even finish it!!!
The "great characters" that showed up in the first novel do not change...at all! I remember saying in my review of that first novel that I could not wait to see how the characters evolved. Well, they don't. Their petty fights and doubts and conversations (which were endearing in that first novel) get ANNOYING. You find yourself saying: "SERIOUSLY? You are thinking that AGAIN?!!!" or "You are making that mistake in your relationship AGAIN?" or "We are having THAT conversation AGAIN?"
The flaw in character development COULD be overlooked IF the mystery was better...but it's not (granted, I did not finish this book -- maybe the conclusion is brilliant).
