Unable to finish!

Most the time I can move beyond the narrator...but couldn't this time. Even I could do better. This may be a good book, but will have to read it.

Interesting definitely good read

Enjoyed the book. Good narration took a couple chapters for narrator to find rythym. CJ Lyons definitely held my interest throughout.

Westlake always fun

I've read/listened to a dozen or so Westlake's and have always enjoyed them, some more than others admittedly. This is a good "bedroom" farce type tale of 2 sets of twins that is at times laugh out loud funny. Westlake always has a great voice for his comic capers and rogues and this is good, puns and word play and smart aleck remarks. The last quarter maybe shifts tone unfortunately and gets a little more serious than perhaps I'd hoped for in keeping with the comic tone, but it's good. I do think narrator is fine, though I think Michael Kramer (?) is the perfect narrator for Westlake and the Dortmunder series as well but alas not all of his is available. Kramer does an excellent job on Abbey's Monkey Wrench Gang and it's style and tone was so much like Westlake I recommend it as a near thing. Hope for more Westlake.

A mistress of the genre

It is years since I read a Margaret Millar book and I had forgotten how good she was. Here a very mixed bag of travellers, en route to a ski lodge in Quebec, are snowbound in their bus and forced to take shelter in a lonely house, occupied by a mad elderly woman and her somewhat grim nurse/warder. People disappear and bodies appear, relationships form and break-up. The mystery is spooky in parts, someone is obviously not who they pretend to be but the story is leavened with lots of humour and I will not leave it so long before I read another Margaret Millar.

Too Bad It's Abridged

There I was, gettin' my much-needed Robert Crais fix, and suddenly by hour three, names of characters, actions, scenes and relationships just didn't make much sense. Loved the K-9 element and the theme of struggling back to greatness after debilitating set-backs. It was like having a slice of my favorite pizza with some of the key ingredients missing. Good, I finished it, but it woulda been way better with pineapple and jalapeños.

This is surely a nonstop read.

Who is the hero? The Marine, the cop, or the dog? This a warmly written story that is timely in the fact that dogs are playing more of a role in war and police work. All three are heroes. Beautifully written and well delivered.

Not my normal

I like Crais but this was not my "normal" kind of book. I really really enjoyed it though! The only reason not 5 stars was because I wish it had been longer and more story there. Loved the bonds with Maggie!

This is one of the best books I ever read.

Halfway through the book I was totally in love with Maggie Marine. Robert Crais understands dogs like nobody I've ever read. It's a great story.

Maggie Marine. Who couldn't love this wonderful dog.

McLeod Andrews was perfect. He read this book with a thorough understanding of what the story was about.

A good story

A litte far fetched, also it is my impression the author has a bit of national hubris...

Still, I enjoyed the book and purchased the next three in a 20 plus series.

Police procedural, more at the higher end and involving different departments.

It reads a little like a series intended for a tv show as the story does have natural breaks where there is a resolution and then kicks off in a new direction.

Skinner is an over the top hero who is not really lovable.

There are a few plot weaknesses, when the whole story is considered. The introduction of the diplomatic and secret service is actually quite good as it does highlight the difference between English and Scotish law.

Not a bad listen.

Serial Killer turned international spy?

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

That's what seemed to happen to this story mid way it turned into an espionage novel complete with international, political back story. It was REALLY a disappointment considering that the serial killer part started out pretty good and kind of dramatic and detailed, almost Jack the Ripper worthy. Then BOOM embassy's and briefcases.

Would you ever listen to anything by Quintin Jardine again?

Maggie - one of the DCs and very sympathetic

The scene at the Edinburgh debate - believable in many ways, although the set up is somewhat obvious - bringing 'staff' in so late with a single point of failure would simply not have been done and the delay could have been dealt with by getting them to walk!

A good listen, although some of the more frustrating procedural moments (thinking that they could not/would not have done this turns out to be the means by which the author concludes the plot. Fun though.

Solid Book 2

Book 2 of the Kristen Conner Mystery series nicely follows up on what happens in Book 1. It's a continuation of the story with no major time gaps. However, the author has changed his writing organization and it has created some chaos while reading.

Book 1 used chapters to deliver different character's POV, using italics for the "bad guy." Book 2 delivers on the different POVs, but this time they are not delineated by chapters. The reader is presented with different sections in chapters with several characters and a group of characters: italics represent two different people, I think? Sometimes after the italics, there was regular text detailing the actions of the person in italics. There were longer sections of unidentified speakers in dialogue. But the majority of the action was centered around Kristen, our protagonist. I found this organization to be highly disorganized and chaotic. I often felt like Kristen: focus!

The storyline is interesting, nevertheless. Kristen is a very likable character - a woman who can't find her place in life outside of work and family, is doing the one thing she knows how to do but isn't sure if it's what she wants to be doing, and is committed to everything she does. By all accounts, the only thing missing from her life is a love interest, and she isn't convinced that she's missing that. Kristen is darn funny and real. Even though we lead different lives, I find her relatable.

The end of Book 2 gives the reader a few teasers of what may come in Book 3. We still have an unanswered question from Book 1 that needs attention. Kristen isn't ready to delve into that, so it's nice that the author doesn't force her to deal with it yet. Book 2 seems like a good "bridge" book between Book 1 and Book 3 (I say that without reading Book 3, it's just how it feels to me).

Looking forward to more books in the series.

Good story, good twists in plot and Kristen Conner rocks.

Kristen Conner is a homicide detective for the Chicago Police Department. She is independent, trustworthy and very good at her job. After weeks of training for the FBI at Quantico, Kristen returns to her normal routine in the windy city or so she thinks. A billionaire playboy has been murdered and the CPD homicide department investigates the murder while under the heat of local politicians and the media.

Kristen also receives a job offer from the FBI. A tough decision to make; sheâll have to give up coaching her nieceâs soccer team, which she really loves to do, and move away from her family.

This was a very good story. I enjoyed getting to know Kristen, her partner Don and the other CPD detectives. I loved the closeness of Kristen's family and the Christian environment included in the story.

Finally - A book I can write a positive review for

I think forever ago I read one of Mike Lawson's first or second books & it was o.k but not memorable... I looked through all the reviews and decided to give book # 7 a chance. I'm glad I did. I like Joe Barrett and am most familiar with his work as the narrator for Brian Freeman's books. I think I enjoyed the book mostly for it's plausible story line & The fact that it did not have some over the top action hero doing things beyond their means. It's the very reason I like Joe DeMarco. I do wish Joe was a little more everything though... I wish Mike Lawson didn't paint him as some bumbling half lawyer skating by.
