    Entertaining Dan Capra thriller
Author Jeff Abbott certainly keeps the action going. I'm not huge fan of this author or this series, but Downfall is a worthwhile listen.
    Very entertaining
If you like Sam Capra, you won't be disappointed. Story occasionally dragged out but they were multiple very enjoyable twists.
    adrenaline rush
What made the experience of listening to Downfall the most enjoyable?
it was one twist after another while keeping the twists believable, blending them together in a seamless manner.
Great Installment in the Sam Capra Series
Fast paced and lots of action. Left with a bit of cliff hanger. I can't wait for the next one to come out. If you liked the previous books, you will probably like this one.
    Not My Combination...
I'm afraid I only made it 30 minutes into this one...
I've always thought a good reader could save a mediocre book and a mediocre reader could sink a good book. Unfortunately I'm not sure what happened here...
The readers' corny, overheated tone starts from a position of mild hysteria and goes from there. This soap opera-ish approach get ahead of the listener's involvement in the story...drama before you have a chance to get involved.
I'm not familiar with the writer's other work, the melodrama of the writing is not aided by this tone.

    Fun read
Seemed to read almost like a scenario for a film. Each chapter heading was a venue, people were described as one might cast a part. As a former Bostonian, I can vouch for the sense of place there, which made the scenes in Russia and Chechnya seem believable. Good character development for such a short book.
    Great action!
Well written and gripping with believable characters and a plot that keeps your interest peaked. I like this writer's style. Also, the scenes were described in a way that placed you there without overdoing it. I plan to read more of Robert Child's books.
    Read like a movie scrpit
I liked this story enough but i must say the scene where Riley runs into the building and she and Justin get close needs improving. It seemed hoaky. Also it seemed everybody was thirty five. Made me laugh noticing that. Other than that it was believable, fast paced and fun.
    Three Stars
    Good story but rather short
    Fun, fast read...
The story line is intriguing and the characters are interesting. I enjoy the art-mystery-history connections so it was fun, fast read.

If you can get past the narrator......
This narrator cannot do a man's voice and they all sound like women that's really the only bad part other than that the stories are really good! I'm really enjoying them already started the third one. Really wish they used a better narrator. Besides no men's voices being used....she pronounces words funny never knew that bureau was two words bur-row is how she says it.. So far first 2 books she did a "man" with the cold and lisp. It doesn't help to make it sound like a man...it's just really annoying!!

    Another Hamish triumph
Would you consider the audio edition of Death of a Glutton to be better than the print version?
    Audio gives the book life
What other book might you compare Death of a Glutton to, and why?
Other M C Beaton books including Agatha Raisin as they're full of wonderful descriptions of both landscape and characters and have some wonderfully humorous passages. The lead characters are also never disappointing.
What does David Monteath bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?
The accent, the lilting voice and the characterisation just can't be surpassed
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
    Remember the 7 deadly sins

I was so excited to start this trilogy and was hugely disappointed right off the bat
Taking Eve is the First Iris Johansen book that I've read. I was so excited to start this trilogy and was hugely disappointed right off the bat. The writing in this book is terrible! There are no back stories on any of the characters, it simply jumps into everyone being completely overly obsessed with Eve, and I don't get it. The obsession is over the top and completely bizarre, I don't know how the author thought that this would be relate-able to their readers.
The overly descriptive writing is so distracting, that it takes away from the story. Even with the descriptive writing, I can't for the life of me picture any of the characters in my head (lack of story building) - which is a complete first when reading a book. I also don't like the fact that every character in the book refers to one another by first and last name, this is not how people refer to each other in real life.
I started the 2nd book and am trying to read it as fast as possible just to be done with it (I don't like starting an not finishing a story). However, after reading other reviews, I've learned that there will be 3 more books after this series, and I can't handle that so I might just call it quits. This book is a lot of fluff, not much action and completely bizarre. I'm not sure how this book even made it past the publisher.
I was desperate for something to read......
I have read all the Iris Johansen and Eve Duncan books. Recipe for an Iris Johansen trilogy: Take one story that wouldn't even fill one book. Add a whole bunch of drivel that you used in all your other books. Take a couple of characters that you've already written and give them new names (I mean, really, how many of her female characters are going to be not really beautiful but so intelligent and intense that they just captivate all the men). Throw in another killer who needs Eve to sculpt their dead loved one. Stir in all the old characters you've left behind for years, and stretch a bad story into 3 books to sell.
I don't know why I keep reading these. I get annoyed every time and find myself skipping page after page of the same old crap. I feel like I'm reading the unrealistic writings of a 16 year old girl. And, what grown he-man uses terms like "red herring" and reconnoiter? A military guy might talk about doing recon, but never in all my years have I heard a guy talk about reconnoitering.

    Members Reviews:
    Great police investigation
I guess I disagree with most of the audio reviewers. First you have the police investigation of a man who is going around killing single mothers and their children because they turned out not to be the killer's perfect family. Second you have the developing relationship between Brandon and Holly.
Holly is a single mother and a CSI investigator. Her husband was killed around the time she found out she was pregnant. She's having a hard time letting him go until Brandon, a vet, comes into the picture.raising two girls of his own alone.
The story switches back and forth between Holly's viewpoint and the killer's viewpoint. Some of the crimes were pretty brutal and some of the women who were killed had interesting secret lives. It's not so much a whodunit since you find out who the killer is fairly early but it's more of the journey to the final showdown, with a few surprises thrown in.
The narrator does have room for improvement but wasn't that much of a distraction from the story.
    save yourself!
i find it difficult to fathom that this book ever made it to being published. the characters and dialogue are atrocious and the only kudos i can offer this author is the unique ability to include every cliche turn of phrase in one book! the plot, such as it is, leaves much to be desired and is quite clearly an amateurish attempt at a suspense. add to that the absolutely excruciating narration (think every elementary school play you've ever seen) and you have what may very well be the worst book i have ever read!!
    amateurish, at best.
    Any additional comments?
The first thing I noticed was the narrator. She delivers the story with all the emotion of a weather reporter, apparently trying to shout over the sound of the rain. Then I noticed the banal conversations between characters, the rote police jargon, the cliché so pervasive it seems almost deliberate. The story did not flow so much as it was excreted in chunks, kind of like a comic book. The language was of a sophistication also appropriate to the comic book. ''that monster kills children, I'll get him if it''s the last thing I ever do." or " Will I ever be able to love again?''
Ever read a book and wonder how it ever got published? The mistake was compounded when some decided to make this an audio book. I thought that if i could get used to the terrible narration, I might find some redeeming qualities in the story.

    Publisher's Summary:
A serial killer follows Du Pré from Washington, DC, back to Montana
A lost and frightened horse plods down the National Mall, startling the crowd. When Gabriel Du Pré spots the confused animal, the connection is immediate, for neither of these creatures belongs in the sweltering heat of a DC summer. Du Pré, a Métis Indian from the wilds of Montana, calms the horse and leads it to the nearest policeman. Du Pré is in Washington to play his peoples music for a Smithsonian festival, but after leading the horse to safety, he encounters a murder instead.
The dead woman is Cree Indian, come down from Canada to sing in the festival. Du Pré tries to put her death out of his mind and returns to Montana, but more killings follow: each time with a primitive weapon, each time foretold by a local shaman. As the body count rises and the killer closes on Du Pré, the lawman vows to never again make the mistake of leaving Montana.
    Members Reviews:
The difference between reading & performing
The Gabriel Du Pre' mystery series by Peter Bowen are my favorite books. They are written with a lot of dialect, and have a lot of mystique in them. Now we finally have some more of them in audio, but we no longer have the gifted Christopher Lane reading them. Lane voiced Gabriel Du Pre' with Coyote French gutturals and western twang, creating a truly life-like character in all dimensions.
Mr. Meskimen reads the book adequately, but he does not have the acting ability or the vocal range to bring the characters alive.
Du Pre' is a Montana brand inspector that drives too fast, drinks too much, dances when he can, and fiddles to the happy crowds in Toussaint's lone bar, as well as at other gatherings. He lives in sin with the lovely Madeline, and they both have kids and grandkids. In the case of Du Pre', it's a passle of grandkids, as one of his two daughters decided to make up for her mother's early death by giving her papa a big family to love. The other daughter is a genius, off doing big things.
I tell you these things because you might not learn all of them in this book, and it is important that you know that Du Pre' takes no crap from anybody. Him, he's got good friends, and sometimes he figures things out, just because something doesn't look right. Meanwhile he is proud grandpapa and premier folk fiddler.
Him, he agrees to go to that Washington, D. C., and play his fiddle at a Smithsonian folk music festival, The crowds bother him some, but he enjoys the other musicians, and then the runaway horse comes, and he goes to get it. Takes the horse back, him, and finds a dead person.
I cannot reproduce Peter Bowen's well-written dialect, but I have talked to people, talk like this, and I know this kind of people. Good people. Good author.
You need to start with the first book in the series so that you know more about Du Pre' and the people who live in Montana ranch country. There are several other books in audio form as well, but you'll be hooked by the skills of Christopher Lane in "Coyote Wind," book one of the series. Then listen to this one. Big difference, this. Listen to the others that are already available, and wait anxiously for the rest of them, because even an average reader is better than no reader at all.

When the body of journalist Jerry Markham is found in a traditional Shetland boat, young Detective Inspector Willow Reeves is drafted in from the Hebrides to head up the investigation. Since the death of his fiancée, Inspector Jimmy Perez has been out the loop, but his interest in this new case is stirred. Markham had left the islands years before to pursue his burgeoning writing career. He had few friends there, so why was he back in Shetland?
Willow and Jimmy are soon led to Sullum Voe, the heart of Shetlands North Sea oil and gas industry. It emerges that Markham was chasing a story in his final days. One that must have been significant enough to warrant his death
    Members Reviews:
    Fabulous characters, pace and atmosphere
This is the fourth in the Shetlands quartet, and each one has been a gem. The characters are carefully drawn, avoiding cliché, and the sense of island space, light, wind and salt-wave are evoked lightly as the narrative moves on, gathering momentum. I came to this series after listening to the Stanhope mysteries, which I really enjoyed. In the Vera Stanhope series, the focus is more on Vera herself, and Cleeves has an annoying (Agatha Christie-like) habit of holding back clues to the moment of final resolution. Here, though the Shetland mysteries deny the reader the possibility of pitting ourselves against the detective; the hide and reveal is far less obvious, making for a more satisfying and rounded listen. The interactions of the characters are brilliantly conceived and Cleeves moves point of view at will, rounding out the suite of protagonists. This shared role in moving the story on, also allows these stories to wear very lightly the necessities of modern police procedures. So we know there is a suite of staff manning calls from the public, but it appears in passing, as does the CSI process, which seems to disappear off to the labs leaving observation, interview and imagination, to be the stuff of the detective team. Great stuff.
    good listen
I am a massive fan of Ann Cleeves and this book did not disappoint, The story is set in Shetland and the location really adds to the atmosphere of plot. Jimmy Perez has returned to Shetland following the death of his fiancee but is gradually drawn back into the investigation of the death of a journalist. It is a book I would recommend if you love a good murder mystery novel
    Another terrific "Shetland" mystery
    Any additional comments?
Jimmy Perez is still trying to come to terms with his personal tragedy and so, when the son of Shetland residents returns to the islands for purposes of his own and is killed, Willow Reeves, a senior policewoman, is sent to take charge of the case. Against his inclination Perez finds that he is caught up in the investigation and a story that began years ago unfolds against the background of the lonely, open, windswept scenery that Ann Cleeves describes so well. The narration by Kenny Blyth is particularly good and added much to the story.
    Worth a Listen
I enjoyed my first Ann Cleeves novel, it was well woven, though I did get a bit lost sometimes (I feel that was MY fault rather than the novel).
The characters were well drawn, and each had an effect on me - whether I liked or disliked them. The killer was not at all obvious to me so I enjoyed the suspense.

    Review
Very good mystery. Intriguing plot with lots of good twists at the end. Hard to put down once you're hooked.
Vacation venue + Chris Bennett/Lee Harris = crowd pleaser!
In her tenth outing, Lee Harris gives us amateur sleuth, ex-nun Chris Bennett on vacation with husband Jack and 9-month old baby Eddie, on Fire Island, New York, over Labor Day. The action takes place in the little pedestrian-only town of Blue Harbor, where friend Melanie Gross has a house for two weeks her family suddenly can't use. At first, we get a lot of vivid and interesting descriptions of this unusual setting, a narrow, 32-mile island off the shore of Long Island. The vacation house is lovely, the town almost utopian, and a good time is unfolding for all. Alas, a fire burns down the fire chief's house, killing him in the process, soon ruled a murder. Chris sees a young woman hurrying away from the scene, which is all it takes to get her off and running to solve both this crime, and ultimately, one that took place many years earlier (her specialty). The remainder of the plot is the quizzing and interviewing and visiting of countless residents and suspects until all becomes clear near the end. Another murder mid-way through keeps up the suspense, and a mysterious lady lawyer adds more intrigue as the investigations proceed. Our only quibble might be that the perpetrator ultimately spills the beans just a little too voluntarily for real life. In sum, "Labor Day" is a fairly typical Harris outing - enjoyable, pleasant, and puzzling enough to entertain in much the same fashion as the nine books preceding it.
If Harris has one thing going for her, it's dependability. Her plots have enough action to sustain the story but not enough to tire or overly tax the brain. We get to know the Bennett family more intimately as time passes, and are watching the baby develop before our eyes (wonder if Lee is a new grandmother?!). There's little to criticize, though some might also say, little to get overly excited about - just a nice clean three-or-four hour read from an author and her leading lady with whom we consistently relax and enjoy. OK?
    Another Holiday....Another Murder
Poor Chris Bennett! She just can't get away from dead bodies! Even when she, her husband Jack and baby Eddie get the rare privilege of spending two glorious weeks in a beautiful beach front house on Fire Island, in the pretty little community of Blue Harbor, they are thrust squarely into the middle of a grisly murder.
