    Publisher's Summary:
"All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing." Edmond Burke...
In this 2nd book of the Wings of Steele series, the adventure continues in Flight of Freedom - with one major difference: Jack Steele's Freedom is no longer the wounded duck she once was. They leave UFW Blackmount Station repaired and retooled, with a complete crew, fully armed and resupplied, ready to hunt.
But life in a busy and turbulent universe is rarely as simple as one would hope it to be. This becomes painfully evident with the complexities in space as events splinter even the best laid plans at home and abroad.
Organized and motivated, the pirates are not to be taken lightly with a growing fleet of freelancers attracted by wealth and fame. In her own right, the Freedom was a name becoming famous... or infamous as far as the pirates were concerned. And that could spell disaster for the Freedom and her crew...
An epic science fiction adventure that reaches from the surface of our familiar planet and the safety of terra firma, to the dark, vast expanse of deep space and distant empires.

Suspend disbelief and have some real fun!
Unlike TV or movies, the books in this series just keep getting better. Action, adventure, snarky major characters; what more could you want? No spoilers here, go to the publisher's summary for that kind of overview. Just be prepared to enjoy yourself!
KC does his usual remarkable audio performance. His voice and cadence are pleasant to the ear, but it is his vocal interpretations of the characters and ability to bring real depth to their personalities that win the day.
    Thank you AudioBook Blast!
    Excellent listen
When I had turn the audio off could not wait to get back to it.
    Loved it!
    Any additional comments?
I absolutely loved this book! Starting book 3 tomorrow! I hope to hear more from this author!
Favorite line from this book... "Stupid people piss me off" lol I use that line daily!
Good ol fashioned Sci-fi with a contemporary twist
Story was excellent. A bit of reality suspension even by Sci-fi standards, but that actually enhances it for those who like good old fashioned hero stories. Also, brilliant display of contemporary political issues. I am struggling to wait for the third one on audio book, hopefully with the same narrator. It takes a little getting used to his speed, but it enhances the feel of the story.
    next one plz

    Publisher's Summary:
See how deep deception goesin the sci-fi political thriller that has readers screaming for more.
Two weeks after the end of The Beam's first groundbreaking season, one thing is abundantly clear: the more the world changes, the harder those in power work behind the curtain to keep it all the same.
With Shift, the NAU's national election, now just days away, the country's political parties fight even harder to win the citizen's mindsminds that are almost all permanently connected to The Beam, addicted to connectivity more deeply than any drug. Only those with the courage to think for themselves can work to change what seems like a certain future.
Meanwhile, using the screaming pundits on ubiquitous viewscreens as cover, an organization advances human enhancements further than they were ever meant to gofurther than the struggling, crumbling NAU can hope to survive.
Doc is still on the run after his near-fatal case of mistaken identity. Kai wants to help him, but not as much as she wants to protect herselfa job that's becoming harder and harder. Leah is stuck with old man Crumb, who has emerged from madness into lucidity with sudden, almost frightening speed. And Nicolai wants nothing more than to cut ties with the Ryans, who have controlled his life since long before he knew their true purpose but politics is a dirty game, and no one gets away clean.
Shift is heating up. All the petty games played around it have had their stakes raised to lethal levels. And in the face of its relentless, implacable advance, not everyone will make it out alive.

    The story deapens
What did you love best about The Beam: Season 2?
How we learned new layers to characters and the back story of this future world that we didn't know about in the first season. It helped raise the stakes and deepen the connections of everyone to each other.
What other book might you compare The Beam: Season 2 to and why?
None really, the Nicolais backstory kind of reminded me of The Postman.
What about the narratorss performance did you like?
Their performances were pretty good. I just wish they could do the male and female voices they do for their character in all the sections and not in just the character viewpoint they are doing.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, I listened to it on the job and finished it in two days.
    Any additional comments?
I look forward to season 3.
    Another fantastic sequel
The Beam is back--this time it goes deeper into the characters, and in many ways it's more intriguing than the first season. I won't give away any spoilers, but If you loved Season 1, you'll love this. It's dark, intriguing, philosophical without being too much so, and always entertaining.
What I love most about the series is the writing style--it translates incredibly well into audio. I listened to the audio narration, which was fantastic as usual. Podium Publishing seriously has some of the best narrators around. They make this story come ALIVE. The funny thing is that I don't normally read hard sci-fi, but I love this series.

Narration so bad I'm giving up on series.
Pyper Down doesn't seem to understand punctuation. The story was captivating enough to get me into book 2, but the narrators cadence and inflections make it painful to listen to.
    EXCELLENT. WELL WRITTEN AND PERFORMED.
One of the best space opera I have heard. Enjoying the trilogy very much. I am looking forward to continuing the next trilogy on Alex's and Caleb 's adventures. The politics, intrigues and aliens from across the galaxy trying to control the humans in the different planets under the Alliance and the Federation are fantastic! Most enjoyable.
Not sure how I got started but...
I'm likely in this for the long haul. Not that I'll rush out and buy book three as soon as it comes out, but I imagine I'll pick it up at some point. Vertigo continues the trend set by the first book of, despite it's frequent narrative shifts, of keeping the focus contained well enough not to feel like narrative space isn't being wasted when someone besides Alex or Caleb. Characters were the first book's strength and that continues here. I was invested in the characters enough that the ever frequent conspiracy scenes didn't divest me from enjoying things moment to moment.
However, one thing I find frustrating is how everyone seems to HAVE to pair off. I know that it is expected in this type of book, but at least in this instance it feels very forced. The characters are the series' strong suit, so when it turns out that everyone has to find a member of the opposite sex to feel their existence fulfilled I end up shaking my head. Or is it just that as a part time romance novel everyone needs a partner to bang? Alex and Caleb fuck like rabbits every time a door closes. It really feels like that should be enough.
    Better than the first
Man, that narrator is just so monotone.

    Empire Of Bones
What made the experience of listening to Empire of Bones the most enjoyable?
A fast paced romp across the stars from Terry Mixon,. It is to Mr Mixon's credit that I enjoyed the book as thoroughly as I did, as yes, while I'm a big ol' sci-fi geek, I'm less John Ringo, more Douglas Adams. I'm wildly ambivalent when it comes to military fiction as well, but these hang ups disappeared the deeper I dug into Empire of Bones. Interesting story
A good book, however not very deep
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I would recommend this book to a friend if they didnt want anything too deep, I found the story to be way too shallow, more like watching an episode of Star Trek than what I have become accustomed to with Novels
Would you be willing to try another book from Terry Mixon? Why or why not?
I would if it was free, but otherwise more than likely no. I understand many people will like this sort of fiction but its not for me
What three words best describe Veronica Gigueres voice?
Clear, Formal, Lacking in variety. I think Veronica is probably more suited to Non-fiction.
Was Empire of Bones worth the listening time?
If you like a fun romp in a alternate reality to get away from the hum drum of real life, its great. If you want something that is deeper and more thought provoking then keep away from this title
Like swimming in an inflatable pool.
Fun at first, but soon you will find yourself wishing it was deeper.
This book is written like the author has somewhere else to be. Everything plays out exactly how it has to to keep the plot barreling forward. I managed to make it 85% of the way through the book before I came to the conclusion, but as the first in a series it doesn't bode well.
The story relies too much on coincidence and convenient timing. Things show up exactly where and when they need to be, as if the author wanted to make sure he was done in time for happy hour. Instead of taking advantage of small breaks to develop characters or world building, it bowls over downtime in leaps and bounds, describing hours of activity in single sentences.
All the characters suffer from hive mind mentality, all agreeing with each other despite having wildly disparate perspectives. It results in all the bad guys being uninteresting and all the good guys being insufferably friendly towards one another at all times, even when there's good cause not to be.
The author likes to insist instead of describe. The characters take the place of a live studio audience, loudly reacting to things in an attempt to get us to do the same, without letting us see why. There will be a statue. The characters will all remark about what a wonderful statue it is, the finest they've ever seen. They will leave, feeling fulfilled in their lives for having seen the statue.

    Publisher's Summary:
The very far future: The galaxy is a drifting wreck of black holes, neutron stars, and chill white dwarfs. The age of star formation is long past. Yet there is life here, feeding off the energies of the stellar remnants, and there is mind, a tremendous galaxy-spanning intelligence, each of whose thoughts lasts a hundred thousand years. And this mind cradles memories of a long-gone age when a more compact universe was full of light.
The 27th century: Proxima Centauri, an undistinguished red dwarf star, is the nearest star to our sun - and (in this fiction) - the nearest to host a world, Proxima IV, habitable by humans. But Proxima IV is unlike Earth in many ways. Huddling close to the warmth, orbiting in weeks, it keeps one face to its parent star at all times. The "substellar point", with the star forever overhead, is a blasted desert, and the "antistellar point" on the far side is under an ice cap in perpetual darkness. How would it be to live on such a world? Yuri Jones, with a thousand others, is about to find out.

    No Sense of Conclusion
Even a series novel should be able to stand alone on its own merits. This book left way too many people, themes, and plot twists hanging. After giving the story more than 17 hours of my life, I experienced a dramatic let-down. I feel disappointed for getting involved in the first place. Just as the characters betrayed each other, the entire story betrays the reader with an unworthy ending. It ran out of fuel--and I don't know if I want to put this much energy into book two.
could be the start of a good series
Proxima; the new book by Stephen Baxter. tell the story of the human interfacing with the plant Proxima, It is a good start to a series. even though it is a little slow in starting, Mr, McCarley narration is brilliant,
    Breezy alien artifact story
A light and fun alien artifact story. I would have loved to read this novel back in the 90s when I was a new SF reader. While I found it well written it was uninteresting for the 21st Century. It was a light, entertaining read, but it wasn't the best use of my time.
    Baxter's Best
What an incredible journey this book is. It's not at all what I was expecting it to be when I started it. It is, I think, Baxter's finest book yet in a career of incredible hard sci fi adventures.
I have been reading Baxter for about 15 years, starting with his Xeelee sequence, and have been a fan ever since. I felt some of his more recent work, like the Long Earth trilogy, were vastly inferior to what he'd done in the past, and others, like the Flood/Ark duology, were so mind-numbingly depressing as to be almost not worth reading. But Proxima is just what I needed from Baxter: a perfect blend of hard sci fi adventure and discovery, with the undertones of vast cosmic machinations you'd expect from vintage Baxter works.
The story has a rich palette of characters, more than any I can remember in any of his recent works. Baxter has been criticized for having very limited characterization, which I think is a somewhat fair assessment, but this book featured a host of distinct, three-dimensional characters with very different perspectives, motivations, and backgrounds.

Not the Best of the Series, But Good
If you like McDevitt you will like this book. It is not his best, and God knows the books in this series do not move quickly. But it is fun and the premises are both clever.
    Respectable, double action mystery sci-fi
Coming Home is the latest Jack McDevitt installment in the Alex Benedict series. The main character, Alex is a combination Indiana Jones / Sherlock Holmes with the narrator, Chase, playing his Watson / gal Friday. This story involves two independent tales with Chase heavily involved in the rescue of a large cruise ship caught in space / time warp that Alex figured out in an earlier installment. Added to the mix is that Alex's uncle is on board. At the same time, Alex comes into possession of an "ancient" (25th century) artifact that suggests a connection to a missing cache of early space exploration items. The story jumps back and forth between these two separate plots.
This universe is set in the far future (beyond the 30th century) and a distant settled planet, although there are several Earth visits involved. One particularly unique feature of this series is the almost normal behavior of everyone in the story. People get hungry and go to restaurants; they go out to lunch with friends and discuss relationships; they go sightseeing on vacations, etc. There are no new sci-fi elements relative to earlier installments and the action scenes are muted and limited relative to earlier tales. McDevitt does provide a sense of the vastness of space which appears to slow down life in the future.
The narration is superb with an excellent range of voices with good pacing. This series and narrator have always been an enjoyable listen and this time out is no exception.
Good story, odd choices in performance.
I enjoyed the story. The directional choices for both the AI voices and the tone given to Khalid (sp unsure) were distracting. Overall differentiation between speakers too subtle to easily
    differentiate who is talking.
Another good entry in the series.
Hated the voice used for the A.I.s. Why the narrator decided to make an advanced computer sound like the computer from the movie 'Wargames' I'll never understand.

    Enjoyable
Excellent story. It really made the drive into work fun despite the Massachusetts traffic! I wish there was more to the story because it seems like a shame to end the story there.
    Simple, straight up and fun.
I've had this story for three years and just getting around to writing this review. Sorry. I like the story for its simplicity and for the earthy but honorable characters, who are at times very funny. It is not military scifi and nobody dies. It's a young man finding his worth helping hard drinking salt of the earth colonist stop mass immigration of rif raf from other planets.
    Patriot Fun
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I will recommend Patriots to a friend because of the story, it's telling and Drake's consistent science throughout his many stories.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Matt, he grew as a character and person as he learned to live in his new world.
Which character as performed by Marc Vietor was your favorite?
    too many to choose from.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Patriots, what it means to be free.
    Any additional comments?
This is the same quality of story from David Drake I've come to expect. Mark Vietor brought the characters to life and made each different and engaging. I laughed out loud several times through this romp on the fringe of civilization.

    Publisher's Summary:
Realizing you have a surviving neighbor after the world is overtaken by the undead isn't always a good thing. Unless that neighbor is the grumpy, armed, and retired Green Beret Gilbert Donohue. In that case, finding out you've got a neighbor is a lot like hitting the proverbial jackpot.
Adrian's piecemeal life on campus since "That Day" has been a struggle. Retrieving supplies from local neighborhoods filled with the walking dead has been dangerous for him, but he's stayed alive by being a little smarter than the other survivors, and a lot faster than the roaming, hungry zombies that have overtaken his home town, and the world.
In Alone No More, the second installment in the smash hit series Adrian's Undead Diary, Adrian's life is poised to become even more complicated and dangerous when some familiar faces find their way to ALPA with some less than friendly folks on their tail. For the first time the breadth of Adrian's Apocalypse widens to reveal the death of one of the oldest cities of mankind in one of the most popular of all the AUD short stories: Jerusalem.
Sometimes in the cold of winter, the only thing that can keep you warm is freshly spilled blood. Alone No More is the second entry in the AUD series, and covers Adrian's journal entries from December 3, 2010, through December 27, 2010. Intermingled with his personal diary entries Alone No More also contains five short stories: "One Mistake: The Last Stand of Hall B", "Putting a Name to a Face", "Exodus", "Jerusalem", and "The Chief".

    The new and improved Adrian
Everything about this story is improved from the first in the series. I loved the first in the series and couldn't wait to hear part two!
It seems that in this next instalment the main character Adrian is becoming a better person. He is now more than just some sort of 'comic book' action figure, slashing and shooting up zombies. The author has really begun to develop and deepen his character.
I loved how the author in the first book injected what seemed to be random emotionally charged accounts of the lives and deaths of other characters. Well, in this instalment of the series the background of those characters are explored a little further, giving insight into how those random accounts interact with Adrian.
I also loved how the first in the series was told from a first persons perspective. This meant that the narrator did not have to change voices, and impersonate another character. However, in this second book more time is spent in the character of people other than Adrian. I am pleased to report the narrator did an excellent job. The author also used Adrians writing in his diary as an useful tool to bring insight into those other characters.
The writing style seems to have gone up another notch. The character development has deepened. The comic book style action of the first book is still there, but not as much. By the way I loved the action in the first book. But nevertheless I listened to this one in one sitting just like the first, simply because it was fun to listen to.
One more comment about the narration, was that it was slightly slow. So once again you can increase the speed a little. This pretty much seems to be the standard now days.

    Publisher's Summary:
Destroyer finds Zed saying goodbye to one friend and pressing forward with two new ones to whom we are introduced in Book 2 - Infected. Mandi, whom Zed and Murphy rescued from the bunker, is immune to the virus. Russell, whose home the others plundered in search of food and other supplies, is also a slow burn, but lower-functioning, childlike, and docile.
After seeing the carnage at the dormitory, a raging, vengeful Zed wants only to kill Mark, his nemesis and the former leader of the ROTC squad. Since Mark has disappeared, Zed unleashes his fury on untold numbers of infected in his path as he makes his way back to the hospital, in an attempt to rescue Steph, a nurse whom he befriended while seeking help for the feverish Murphy shortly after the prison riot.
But the brave medical staff, holed up on the 10th floor of the hospital, and running out of provisions, has decided to take matters in hand by exposing themselves to the virus and shooting those who "turn". Zed is determined not to face another loss, but once again, time is running out.

    destroyer is the right title!

this is my favorite of the 3 books! wow! zed really loses his $hit and goes crazy! i really liked that the author finally got to the hospital. there's a lot of action, and zed really needs a dose of the ogre and the harpie to get through what he has to do! the hospital scenes are really good.
destroyer focuses on zed. murphy kinda takes a back seat for most of the story. a few new characters are added to the story. the casualty rate is high, and you never know who's going to survive, which is always a plus in my book. the hoard scenes are intense and well thought out. i like how nothing comes easy.
overall, a good continuation of the story!
Well, now I have to buy all of them
Story gets better and better as you get invested in the characters. Narration at a goo speed.
    Almost a zombie story
This series is a great take on the typical zombie book. The way the infection in these books is spread as well as its effects seems much more realistic, although I'm not sure if medically accurate. Very well written and narrated. Can't wait to buy the next one! Great listen for long road trips!
    Why Half A Book?

I'd like at least 10 hours out of a book. Combine 3 of Adair's books and you'd feel like you're getting your money's worth. The story is great, but I don't like burning a full credit for a novella.
