    Publisher's Summary:
Humanity has spent its time enjoying the peace that can only be had through blissful ignorance. For centuries, stories of things that go "bump" in the night have been passed down and shared. When creatures of the night proved to be real, the best of America 's military came together to form an elite band of rapid-response teams. Their mission: To face the challenge and keep the civilian populace safe from those threats and hide all evidence of their existence. But during a routine mission, when things go horribly wrong, the Monster Squad finds themselves having to rebuild from the ashes of what they once were.
This time, they face not only the monsters that threaten the peaceful lives of the citizens they are sworn to protect, but their own government, as a dark storm brews on the horizon. A storm that will threaten not just the squad and their existence, but the lives of every human on Earth.

    SOG true romance tales
Yup, I really wanted to get into this story line and maybe the next book in the series would get me there, but right now I am going to pass. Stallcup is using this book to build the world of Monster Squad, person by person and all the background and barely laid the keel of the story line. I feel, too much of the book was dealing with romantic relationships. Nice fluff, but by the half way point in the book, I really felt that the book cover should have had a shirtless Fabio Lanzoni.
I just struggled to get through the book, hoping the opening action scenario's details would be revealed. I expected more on the coordinated world wide attack, but it was overshadowed by personalities and personal relationships. If you like heavy romance with your world domination monster stories, this would be the series I would point you to.
Is more like the Twilight series then anything
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
This was more of a romance book then a Vampire/ Werewolf battle saga. Post this in the "young romance" section rather then the thriller section.
Has Return of the Phoenix turned you off from other books in this genre?
I really enjoy a good werewolf story, so no, I will continue to look for them. I thought combining the undead with spec ops was a great idea for a book, what I got instead was your basic sappy romance crap like the Twilight series.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
The narrator did a fine job, had many accents and did a satisfactory job, it was the book itself that was misleading.
What character would you cut from Return of the Phoenix?
    Damian, Senator Franklin's son.
    Any additional comments?
How do you have a Vampire/ Werewolf book and no one gets killed? Well, almost no-one. Chapter 1 starts out with a battle that seems to set the whole book up, and then no one dies or there isn't another battle for the next 20 chapters.
How many times can the author use the same romantic phrases over and over in a spec ops book? Seeing the pain or sadness in their eyes, or could feel her tremble beneath him crap. if your going to post that it is a battle book between special forces and the undead, then how about having a few fights of exactly that, instead of everyone falling in love.
    Good but
The action was pretty good and the rest of the story wants to be heard but there was too much graphic sex for a monster squad book.

    Publisher's Summary:
Part military SF, part cyberpunk, part grand-scale space opera, and part techno-psychological thriller, the Cassandra Kresnov novels transcend the recently narrow segmentation of the science fiction genre.
In 23 Years on Fire, Cassandra discovered that the technology that created her has been misused in her former home and now threatens all humanity with catastrophe. Returning home to Callay, she finds that Federation member worlds, exhausted by the previous thirty-year-war against the League, are unwilling to risk the confrontation that a solution may require. Some of these forces will go to any lengths to avoid a new conflict, including taking a sledgehammer to the Federation Constitution and threatening the removal by force of Cassandra's own branch of the Federal Security Agency.
More frighteningly for Sandy, she has brought back to Callay three young children, whom she met on the mean streets of Droze, discovering maternal feelings she had not known she possessed. Can she reconcile her duty as a soldier, including what she must do as a tactician, with the dangers that those decisions will place upon her family--the one thing that has come to mean more to her than any cause she now believes in?

    Great story
The reader needs to better his female voices, well, he boy voiced one of the girls . I think it would be great if they got real girls to play all the female voices, that would really make audible even better. One guy for narration and guy voices, and a girl to do female voices.
    Good book and good story
A little sappy at the end but nobodies perfect. I enjoyed the series so far looking forward to the next book.
Better than book 2, more like book 1
For a good 2/3 of the book, this story took the same tact as its predecessor and just piling on the bleakness. Nothing ever goes right for anyone, and things just keep getting more and more depressing. Everything you hope would happen as a reader doesn't. But then, finally, things start taking a turn for the better. The subplots about Brondi, Admiral Hoff, Ethan/Atton/Destra, Illara, the Defiant, and the Valiant are finally resolved. We get a lot of back story about humanity's history, the Gors, and the Sythians. We're finally given an answer about why Sythians are attacking. This book gives a lot more satisfaction like book 1 did, and not like book 2. Overall, it was well worth a listen/read and I'm looking forward to the next book.
I listened to the audiobook, and as usual, the narrator does a fine job. His kid voices are incredibly annoying, but otherwise, he does a fine job.
NOTE: I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.
    Gore with a twist
great narrator makes it seem very realistic and easy to follow. I am anxious to start the next book.
    questions answered, mysteries discovered
they could have concluded the series with this book based the revelations at the end. There are still stories left to tell with these characters.

    Publisher's Summary:
By using the energy of the land, some humans have found they can develop extraordinary abilities. At the age of 17, these warriors, magicians, chemists, and psychics are allowed the opportunity to train at the Academy, increasing their opportunity for a well-paying career. But there's a catch. They must fight beside the Army if requested by their king. Most aren't concerned by this, as the current treaty has prevented battle for nearly 70 years...but that's about to change.
Of four roommates with interwoven stories, Cleve Polken takes focus as a hostile warrior who feels more comfortable in a duel than a conversation. Never getting past his parents' death, Cleve has developed a crippling fear of psychics, for some may have the power to resurface the torment he buried within himself upon his parents' passing. Cleve's forced to face this fear head-on when he discovers that not only is one of his roommates a psychic, but that he has an overwhelming attraction to her, which he quickly attributes to a psychic spell, nothing more.
By the time an army of savage, reptilian men called Krepps become involved in the war, all hope of resolution without battle is shattered. In this powerful army, one born with the inability to smell doesn't have the same feeding urges as his fellow Krepps and is outcast because of it. He finds himself with an unlikely ally in the middle of a crossroad, trying to find a way to reunite with his sister. Little does he know how much his choices will twist the fate of the war and alter the lives of the four human roommates forever.

    Wait! Audible credit! Come BAAAAACK!
Rolled the dice on this one.
    OUCH. Goodbye, little Audible credit.
This audiobook has a great concept, although not exactly a new one. Parts I liked, but I couldn't complete this audiobook. It rambles and falters. It waxes and wanes. It lacks focus and drive.
I had high hopes for this work, but I also want to encourage the author.
Narro, you've got something here, but do NOT be rushed. Take your time. Do NOT be pushed by editors and publishers with their own agenda. Rewrite pages. Think of how people actually speak to one another - Not the specific words, but the way people think, react and respond to each other. And NO ONE talks alike to another - We're different, we're unique in our mannerisms and responses. Use that as a means to create captivating conversation.
You're almost there. Just don't rush the work. Edit, edit, edit.
To Audible listeners, you can do better. Move along.
    Not bad at all!
Bastial Energy: The Rhythm of Rivalry: Book 1 is not a bad first first attempt at a book series! Saying that is something, and i am looking forward to next book in this series! The Rhythm of Rivalry is a series i will return to! I am also going to say that B. T. Narro is a name i never heard of before!
Nigel Patterson is fantastic in other books. I love when he reads Iain Rob Wright.

    Publisher's Summary:
He raised an army against those who took everything from him.
They should have picked their enemies more carefully. Five centuries from now, on a remarkably Earthlike planet that is mankind's sole colony in space, religious fanatics called the "Salafi Ikhwan" have murdered the uncle of former colonel Patrick Hennessey. That was their first mistake, because uncle was rich and Hennessey was rather a good colonel. But they also murdered Hennessey's wife, Linda, and their three small children, and that was their worst mistake for she was the only restraint Hennessey had ever accepted. From the pile of rubble and the pillar of fire that mark the last resting place of Linda Hennessey and her children arises a new warrior - Carrera, scourge of the Salafis. He will forge an army of ruthless fanatics from the decrepit remains of failed state's military. He will wage war across half a world. He will find those who killed his family. He will destroy them, and those who support them, utterly, completely, without restraint or remorse. Only when he is finished will there be peace: the peace of an empty wind as it blows across a desert strewn with the bones of Carrera's enemies.

    Good Listen!
Took a chance on this one being I was not familar with the author. Overall this was very enjoyable. I will grant that the writer used events from our real world history in the plot but that is okay. What he did with them is what matters. Am looking forward to the next installment in the series.
    Recommended!
    Earth 2
He took our present day and moved it to a place far far away but with our same problems.
    The more things change...
This book is by and large one big retelling of the entire "War on Terror." It takes the "those unable to learn the lessons of history" cliche to new heights. In the future on a colony of earth most of the 18th-20th century history is repeated almost event for event. Our story really starts just before a major terrorist attack which is a pretty faithful and slightly disturbing recreation of the 9/11 attacks. Then events proceed from there. There is a certain level of dissonance, because these colonist have access to earth history up to around 2050. Yet they somehow fail to note any similarities. However despite this it does become a rather interesting story of revenge and psychological turmoil. It also has some interesting things to say about human nature and the nature of religion. I don't agree with all or most of its points but it is an interesting perspective.
Overall fairly well written and plotted with some holes that one can ignore.
The narrator does a fine job and I look forward to some more of his work in the future.
    Interesting and provocative book.
What did you love best about A Desert Called Peace?
If you are interested in the adventures of a very realistic and effective military antihero, this is the series for you.Fair warning: the attitudes evinced by the characters in this book are strongly NOT politically correct and contain strong elements of nationalism, chauvinism and situational morality. On the plus side, it's clear that Kratman has thought deeply about the issues he fictionalizes and his point of view is clear and powerfully pragmatic. In addition, anyone who pays as much homage to Heinlein's "Starship Troopers" as he does can't be all bad.

    Background information
This is a companion novella #10.5 and is set at the same time as Furious #10. The brief story follows the efforts of Senior Agent in Charge Foile of the Wardhaven Bureau of Investigation. Agent Foile is assisting Kris in her efforts to stop her grandfathers trade flotilla. In book #10 Furious agent Foile was the head agent trying to capture Kris. This story sort of provides the information as to why Wardhaven Navy helped fund Kriss new ship. This story provides some background about Grandfather Al and filler information about the Flotilla.
This trend in authors publishing novella inserted into their ongoing series is becoming very popular. Some of the novellas do provide some interesting background information but the information could have been added to the story if it is important. I have not made up my mind if reading these novellas maybe helpful to me as a reader in obtaining a broader view of the story or just a waste of time and money. Dina Pearlman narrated the story.
I love the story and narration, but...
I love the story and narration, but $10 for three hours is too much. You should reduce this to $3 to $4. it will not save me any money, but some other people will be able to enjoy the side story.
    Nice short story
This SHORT story is one of those that fills in the characters in the Chris Longknife series. It is interesting if a little light. Not much on the characters development like some of the best of this type of story. Probably not worth a book credit. But, not a bad way to kill a little time today while I was waiting in the airport.

Kevin Hearne has great taste in books!!!
I was at the book store when I saw this book and Kevin Hearne's name on the cover jumped out at me. He's one of my favorite authors so I decided to read the first in the series since he gave the book/author his approval. I was not disappointed, it is a great series!! This installment does not let down! Angele Masters does a good job, you can hear the differences in her characters and she conveys emotion well. My only complaint is that she's a little slow. Not so slow that I want to chew my arm off and beat myself to death with it, but much slower than I am used to. Overall, great listen/read!
A study in ashes by Emma James Holloway
This is the third book in the series. it is a continuation of the a young woman and her life in which Magic
is is free in the world again as she battles the dark and evil forces of a corrupt kingdom and how she becomes a woman of strength and power.
She is the niece of Sherlock Homles who features from time to time in the story line.
Beautifully written I enjoyed the characters and the adventures .
Read by Angele Master who does q fine job of narration.
    I Want More
I was skeptical because of some of the reviews but I loved these books. They had a happy ending and that's a biggie for me, but I'm left wondering if there will be more books. In the end something happens to one of the main characters and I want to know what! The author leaves it with a hint there might be more so I'll watch for her books. If you enjoy steam punk you'll love Gail Carriger Finishing School series I did.
    A Holmesian Tale
Wonderfully written and a joy to read, listen. Characters come alive, warts an all.
Strong female heroines, overcoming and enduring.
    my three favorite genres
I love steam punk! I love fantasy! I love mysteries! Emma Holloway combines these admirably!

    Title: Distress
    Author: Greg Egan
    Narrator: Adam Epstein

    Language: English
    Release date: 11-25-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 34 votes
    Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Investigative reporter Andrew Worth turns down a documentary on a mysterious new mental illness - "Distress," or acute clinical anxiety syndrome, for another assignment. He's on his way to the artificial island of Stateless, where the world's top physicists are gathering to decide on a new TOE, or Theory of Everything, to replace Einstein's outmoded legacy.
Chief among the scientists is the brilliant African Nobel laureate, Violet Mosala, the focus of Worth's story, who is the subject of mysterious death threats. Worth begins his own investigation, but it takes on even more urgency when he finds that Distress, the mental plague now affecting millions, is linked somehow to the approaching "Aleph Moment" when the TOE is finalized.
The countdown has begun for a disaster that will reach all the way back to the Big Bang. And beyond...
    Editorial Reviews:
Having just finished a documentary, journalist Andrew Worth heads to the artificial island of Stateless to cover a physics convention, where African Nobel Laureate Violet Masala is about to present her Theory of Everything. But the island idyll turns out to be anything but, as Stateless has been inundated with anti-science protestors who want to unleash a deadly disease that may destroy the world. Adam Epstein has a methodical approach that allows Greg Egan's impressive world-building to breathe and take shape, but Epstein is best at inhabiting the diverse characters whose clashes and conflict drive the drama in Distress.

A good book ruined by a poor (and strange) reading
This was all a sad and irritating experience. When I saw that Egan's books were coming to Audible, I pre-ordered this one and expected I would be ordering the rest of the set. Unfortunately, after this rather bizarre reading, I don't think I can handle any more of Adam Epstein. Of the 200 or so audiobooks I've 'read', there have been only a couple that I thought were ruined by the reading. This is one. There are some very interesting ideas and some good science in Egan's science fiction, but Epstein reads this as though it is some goofy teenage comedy. Most of the characters are given cartoon style accents. Even the more serious scientists in the story are given the accents of buffoons. The main character is not so silly, but Epstein uses an odd rhythm (raising the pitch at the end of most sentences) and this also distracts from the reading. A good reader should be transparent and allow the story to flow through. But here, you are constantly wondering why the reader is reading like that. The story itself might be better than four stars, but it is hard to tell. I was too distracted.
Sadly, Epstein was hired to read the other Egan books, so I will reading those the old fashioned way.
    Stick with the Kindle version
Same reader as Permutation City. I believe there is something in the Geneva Convention about not having to listen to this person.
    Scott Brick where are you?
    this is the worst book.
I spent hours of my life on this book and don't even care that I'm not finishing it. it sucks that badly.
    So sad
While Egan has some great ideas, they're too mired in atheist humanist preaching to rise to the level of anything character driven or even plot driven. You don't need a Christian worldview to tell a good story. Isaac Freaking Asimov signed the Humanist Manifesto.

    Publisher's Summary:
Smith and Trowbridge describe the flavor of their five-book space opera Exordium as a cross between Star Wars and Dangerous Liaisons with a touch of the Three Stooges. With its fast-moving blend of humor and horror, of high-tech skiffy and the deep places of the human heart, The Phoenix in Flight launches the reader into a complex, multi-layered universe as Brandon nyr-Arkad, dissolute youngest son of the ruler of the Thousand Suns, abandons the life of service planned for him and flees into the lawless Rift.
Only slowly does he discover that the world he rejected now lies in smoking ruins as the ritual vengeance of Jerrode Eusabian against Brandons father, twenty years in preparation, culminates in an explosion of interstellar violence. With both his brothers dead and his father the Panarch imprisoned, Brandon becomes the Panarchy's last hope.
    Editorial Reviews:
James Patrick Cronins vibrant and dynamic performance catapults the listener to the far-flung galaxies of this first volume of Sherwood Smith and Dave Trowbridges sprawling, five-part intergalactic space saga, which finds our devil-may-care hero Krysarch Brandon nyr-Arkad, the youngest son of Emperor Gelsaar, pitted against the nefarious Jerrode Eusabian, whos hell-bent on exacting revenge against The Thousand Suns.
Whether capturing the nuances of the Doljharian dialect or the violent tendencies of volatile space orcs, Cronins superb delivery elevates this exhilarating blend of hard sci-fi and fantasy.

Space opera meets noir and slapstick
One of my favorite space operas of all time. The writing is tight, it is well plotted and the storytelling is top notch. Memorable characters both heroes and villains, and a few ambiguous bad guys you love to hate. so happy this is out on kindle. I wore out the paperbacks.

I couldnt put this book down. Space Opera is by far my favorite flavor of Sci Fi. This is everything a space opera novel should be. The descriptions of space battles from the point of view of the bridge crews are sharp and detailed. The impression of shipboard life is reminiscent of a space born "golden age of sail", loved it. Something else I look for in a good sci fi book is strong development of alien (or human) cultures. The authors have put a lot of thought and work into developing far future human cultures (and very "alien" aliens), an imperial bureaucracy that is capable of spanning thousands of star systems (a Bureau of Archetype and Ritual!), and characters possessed of depth who are capable of growth and surprises. This book (and the series) weaves a complex story, if you are looking for a light read, this might not be the book to choose. If you want a rich story, character depth, conflict, and fantastic locations, grab a copy! I've been able to reread this book, which is unusual for me and I look forward to reading the e-book updates with new content.
Epic Science Fiction Meets the Three Stooges (Sort of)
This unique series has long been out of print and that's a shame. I was so happy to see that they were able to find a way to bring it back into availability as I have long since read my paper copies into non-existance.
The Phoenix in Flight is the first part of a 5 book series that explores a universe in which the central theme is both loss and hope.
