    Title: Locus Amoenus
    Author: Victoria N. Alexander
    Narrator: Ben Jörgensen
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 25 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-31-16
    Publisher: The Permanent Press
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
In this beautifully nuanced dark comedy, a 9/11 widow and her son, Hamlet, have retreated from Brooklyn to the idyllic rural countryside upstate, where for nearly eight years they have run a sustainable farm. Unfortunately, their outrageously obese neighbors, who prefer the starchy products of industrial agriculture, reject their elitist ways (recycling, eating healthy, reading).
Hamlet, who is now 18, is beginning to suspect that something is rotten in the United States of America, where health, happiness, and freedom are traded for cheap Walmart goods, Paxil, endless war, standard curriculum, and environmental degradation. He becomes very depressed when, on the very day of the eighth anniversary of his father's death, his mother marries a horrid, boring bureaucrat named Claudius.
Things get even more depressing for Hamlet when he learns from Horatio, a conspiracy theorist, that Claudius is a fraud. The deceptions, spying, and corruption will ultimately lead, as in Shakespeare's play, to tragedy.

    Great art
Fantastic exploration of waking up. Loved the melding of Shakespeare and contemporary "news". Brilliant ending. Thank you.
Ben Jorgensen brings Hamlet-inspired story to life
If you could sum up Locus Amoenus in three words, what would they be?
    Hamlet Update Upstate
If youve listened to books by Victoria N. Alexander before, how does this one compare?
This is the first audio version of a book by Victoria Alexander that I have heard
What about Ben Jörgensens performance did you like?
His thoughtful and versatile presentation of the text brought the characters off the page and onto the stage.
I thought that his narration was like a performance, with one actor playing several parts. A video version would be splendid!
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I'm not sure moving would be quite the right word...disturbing perhaps. It's a clever book and not sentimental.
    Any additional comments?
I would hope in addition to the download that there is, or will be, a DVD audio book version - something one could give to people as a gift.

    A Delightfully Creepy Must-Read!
This collection of short stories is unique, entertaining, and delightfully creepy. Mr Gates (yes, he is a Mr and I know his real name, but you'll have to torture me to get it) loves his home town, as I do, and does a wonderful job of showcasing some of the current places of interest as well as sharing tidbits of history. He does begin the book with a warning about the language; this is fiction for adults, and he doesn't pretend otherwise. But it's not enough to distract from the story, so I didn't mind.
Rumor has it that there's a sequel on the way!
    Senic City Cafe Vol.1
In this collection of short stories by A.L.Gates, the reader will enjoy the macabre, thought provoking, delightfully twisted tales, spun through characters, intricately woven on a slightly warped loom. It is sure to leave your mind reeling and double checking just who it is that you are standing next to!

    Data di pubblicazione: 03-21-16

    Riepilogo Editore:

Meredith and David Fiddler looked at Joshua as he slept peacefully in his hospital bed. His four-year-old body was sprawled at an odd angle to accommodate the apparatus that elevated his broken right leg.
"The doctor said it was a bad break," Meredith whispered. "They had to put pins in. I should have seen him trip. I should have been there to catch him. This is all my fault." A single tear rolled down Meredith's cheek. Her dark eyes were filled with pain and self-recrimination. "I shouldn't have let him play tag with the other kids," she moaned.

Americana as genuine as it gets. Heartwarming. Hilarious. Archetypal. Seventeen stories of small-town America that will make you laugh. Guaranteed.
If you grew up in the rural Midwest, you've met big, easy-going Sheriff Tip Tungate, with his uniquely local sense of justice. You've sat in front of hulking principal Butch Bauer, who runs "the best sports program in the state", and seen his football trophies in the display case behind him. You know Mrs. Aubrey, the church secretary who knows everything, and Pastor Frank, the minister with a secret. You've eaten breaded tenderloin at Big Iva's Truckstop while watching goings-on among the Peterbilts. You have eaten baked beans and chocolate cake at the church carry-in supper, been embarrassed by a revival, and seen what happens in small towns to intellectuals who won't shut up.
Seat of Howarth County, Indiana, not far north of the Ohio River, Sedalia is on no map, but lives in the hearts of Hoosiers everywhere.
    Members Reviews:
Clean living isn't always so clean...
Worth the chuckles, the residents of Sedalia dispense some grade-A Hoosier justice. From the town gossip to the church congregation to the a la carte pickles in the jar over at the general store--this is as authentic as it gets!
Love this look at Small-Town Indiana....A MUST READ!
Just finished reading Sedalia, Indiana. What a funny, heart-warming, and interesting look at small-town, Indiana. I especially enjoyed and could relate to the chapter on the Writer's Group. A MUST HAVE BOOK! Be sure to read this one....

    Fatally Disappointing
I was somewhat engrossed for a few pages, then on page 17 I encountered a gross grammatical and stylistic error, so I quit. I have no desire to read a book authored and edited this sloppily.
Forgiveness Opens the Door to Allow the Self to Soar
A childhood of control where even the slightest step out-of-bounds of the required agenda would rile the fury of a step mother obssesed with her way or no way. Reina Murray presents a touching memoir of relentless striving to understand her world as a young teenager thrown into a homelife far from her loving and formative younger years. Some events touch on the very survival of the essence of her soul....leading ultimately to the assurance that love, free and open to touch the core spirit of herself and those around her, allows her own spirit to soar so high above her own expectations. A joy to read a finale so deserving of personal victory and triumph!
    Amazing
Amazing, wonderful, encouraging, a true honor to have this book. Written so well. While I was reading
I felt like I was there with the family. Being a daughter of a mother and father that abused me and now an adult I can see that happiness is possible. Thank you Reina Murray because of you I can hold my head up and smile .

    Members Reviews:
    Surreal and tender
I really liked this novel for the most part. It starts off quite conventionally, the story of a young family, the mother depressed, the dad trying to hold it all together. It's written compellingly and with great tenderness. We move on to the story of their daughter and how her own daughter copes with her depression and alcoholism after a great tragedy befalls them. Again, wonderful and moving writing.
The fantasy part of the book is very enjoyable to begin with; the scenes set in a strange land, where the past can be tuned into as easily as flipping channels on the tv.
Towards the end of the novel, the surreal world in which time is not linear takes centre-stage for all the characters. I feel the book lost its way a little here and I got slightly impatient for things to resolve. This feels like a minor quibble however, the book is, on the whole, wonderful and delightfully genre-defying.
    Recommended.
