Unfortunately, I could not connect to the characters or the story. Adventures is the first book in the series, meaning the novel ends abruptly, leaving the reader with more questions than answers. The main reason for my lack of connection is the way the author composed the novel. There is a lot of description in long paragraphs that seem to drag on, taking away from the action. Celine includes numerous details on the characters, which normally I prefer, but with all the details coming one right after the other, it is a lot of information to absorb. This can be said of the dialogue too. Some paragraphs fill up nearly a whole page with no breaks. This is a pet peeve of mine and something that distracts me from the story. This writing style is evident in the beginning when the senators have a lengthy discussion on a specific amendment. This lost my interest quickly, as I found it boring. These discussions occurred several more times throughout the novel, repeating a lot of opinions and information. Another flaw in the writing style is the language used. It seems as if it should be written for a younger audience, with the sometimes immature language used by characters in high positions. However, the material includes senate proceedings and amendment discussions that would indicate a slightly older audience. The discrepancies were distracting and didnât keep me engaged in the story.

Overall, this story was not for me. The writing style is not one I personally connect to and therefore I found myself rushing through the book to get to the end.

Politics with a twist

I found this to be a quick read as well as a unique venture into a fun genre. Educational as well as thrilling, this story manages to surprise a reader at every turn with twists that vary from hostage situations to blackmail. Itâs hard to guess whatâs going to happen next, but a reader wonât be disappointed!

Though there are several characters to keep track of and though this number can become overwhelming, the author manages to endear some right from the start to the reader. Their causes become something to be passionate about, giving the reader someone to cheer on as the story grows more and more complicated.

Though this story isnât for everyone I found it enjoyable and a good choice if youâre looking for a quick look at politics through a different set of eyes.

The Best Yet of the Under Suspicion Novels

Of the four "Under Suspicion" novels published so far, this was my favorite. I enjoyed the way the authors repeated just enough of the backstory so that the reader could remember how the recurring characters are related. Also, if you are not reading the books in sequence, the authors refer to previous mysteries without revealing exactly how they were solved, so if you happen to read book number four first, you could still enjoy the first three novels. In this installment about a reality TV show that focuses on suspects in unsolved murders, a wealthy heiress has fallen or been pushed from the top of a building during a prestigious fundraiser. Suspicion falls on her new boyfriend, her children and relatives who might not want to share a potential inheritance with a younger suitor. Even as much as the suspenseful twists and turns of the mystery, I enjoy the development of the personal relationships among the television crew and their friends and families, especially the love life of the lead investigator, Laurie Moran. I was not thrilled with the ending of book number three, but this ending more than made up for it. Bring on book number five!

Family dynamics (3.5*s)

Laurie Moranâs new on-air legal expert for her TV show Under Suspicion, Ryan Nichols, has suggested they next examine the cold case of the wealthy widow Virginia Wakeling being pushed from the roof of the Metropolitan Museum of Art some three years ago. But the only suspect in the case Ivan Gray runs a successful gym, Punch, largely financed by Virginia. Isnât this simply a classic case of a much younger man taking advantage of an elderly widow? Is Ryan influenced by the fact that Ivan is his personal trainer?

When Laurie starts digging, it turns out the family members who inherited from Virginia and other associated people are not all that harmonious. Despite their insistence that Ivan is guilty, did one or more of them have a motive to eliminate Virginia?

Like the other books in this series, the story moves well. The main characters are likeable. It may not be the best in the series but is entertaining.

Another Excellent Entry in the Under Suspicion Series

Mary Higgins Clark is one of my favorite authors and she doesn't disappoint with the latest Under Suspicion novel. She and Alafair Burke deliver a fast paced, well constructed mystery that keeps you guessing right up until the end.

A beautiful elegiac farewell

This is Mankells final book written just before his death two years ago in 2015 and now translated into English. Forget all his Wallanders and other crime novels, this is a stand-alone work of great poignancy and depth so beautifully read that you accept Sean Barrett as Mankell himself, as well as the retired doctor Welin whose story this is.

A description of the scenario sounds like 11 hours of unremittingly melancholy. 70 year-old Welin (retired after an operation he was carrying out went horribly wrong) lives alone on an isolated Swedish archipelago in the house which had belonged to his parents. After it is burned down by an arsonist, he loses everything; his ill-tempered, troubled daughter Louise, who grew up away from him, makes a visit which is both uncomfortable and irritating for him. Even his meal contains fatigue and sorrow, and the fish and the humans are disappearing from the island. It seems an ocean of emptiness like the Japanese-style garden Louise would like to make on the island, and there is a great deal about loneliness and loss.

But it is all so gentle (and Sean Barretts voice is wonderful for this) and so insightful that it doesnt seem merely melancholy. There is the low-key crime investigation (who is the arsonist setting fire to other houses?) which makes Welin muse on just how well we ever know others; there is a new life which could grow into the next century, and his deepening relationship with his daughter; his not entirely satisfactory but treasured friendship with the prickly journalist decades younger than himself; theres his memories of the past which come back to him in waves and make Welin entirely real and human as he (and I think Mankell) reviews his life and awaits the end he knows must come. The novel ends as Welins house is being re-built, the fish have returned to the sea: the final note is one of uplift and redemption (which I cant explain without spoiling the plot). This one will stay with you.

Hmmmm!

Well, I think this is the oddest book I have ever read - there really wasn't any 'story', it was just the meandering memories of a retired doctor. He was incredibly despondent and depressive - YET - I didn't want to put the book down as he had captured me.

Terrible narration worst American accents Ive ever heard!

Had to send this book back, I couldnt concentrate on the story because of the ridiculous American accents with undercurrents of English and that were just wrong..... distractingly wrong. The narrator doesnt just attempt one accent but has a go at several dialects.... each equally bad.

Slightly predictable, but enjoyable

Enjoyed listening to this. Definitely got more into it around the middle when Alice's narration started. Slightly predictable ending not helped by the start of the book, but does make you question on the way through.

Struggled to get through...

Unlikeable characters. I didn't care for the character that died or who killed her. Thought it was a pointless investigation and kept asking myself 'Who cares?'

Narrators voice is annoying story is boring - girlfriends review

Got this audiobook for my girlfriend and she said she found the narrator's voice annoying especially when playing the mens parts. She found the story to be pretentious admit wax just something to listen to in the background to fall asleep to. She doesn't like to quit on books so finished it to the end but didn't like the characters or the story much. She said save the money for the audiobook and spend it on a month's membership on Netflix instead

Great read....but some was unrealistic

Well I am a big fan of Nina and Eddie's antics and this book was full of fun and a great story line. But,I had to skip a few pages at the end of the book because their exploits were just too unreal. I will not be a spoiler, but, hanging off the back of an aircraft in a truck is a bit much.

The characters are a good balance of good and bad and how Eddie and Nina deal with them in their standard fashion....Zink, bam, bonk!

But ,they have a new outlook on life since they have a 3 year old daughter...Macy.

The book was one of the best reads I have had this year. Mr. McDermott did a great job of making me think I was with our two hero's dodging punches and bullets. If I overlooked the pages of unreal activities then I would of given the book 5 stars. That being said each time I picked up the book I could not wait to see where Nina and Eddie took me next.

Decent enough but missing something

I have really enjoyed the action and the humor of all of Andy McDermott's Wilde and Chase novels. I've read all of them. This one is a different scenario as they now have a toddler daughter and we meet Nina's long lost grandmother, who has a secret of her own.

But while I liked the book it didn't seem as satisfying to me as the older ones. It read like a soap opera at times and less about the action, which the author is really good at writing. There were a few laugh out loud moments, which I enjoyed. If you are a fan of these books you need to read it. If you've never read a book by Andy McDermott, I recommend finding his older ones first.

But as always, I'm looking forward to the next one.

Good But Silly

Andy McDermott's THE MIDAS LEGACY has a lot going for it. The best being the main characters, Nina Wilde and Eddie Chase. When they're together in the book, the novel moves along, is exciting, and made me laugh. However, the "fire-power" scenes with the bad guys also made me laugh, and not in a good way. This is a long novel, and it would've worked better had those battle scenes been cut in less than half. The shooting and bombs got silly after awhile, and I often forgot what Nina and Eddie were doing in the various locales. Mr. McDermott's writing is better than this.

Highly recommended! Sam is back with a vengence.!

Sam is back from the dead! And dropping right back into the thick of things as usual!

In Fallout, Sam has been sent to Hungary to do a quick check into the death of a fellow agent. Seems straightforward enough that she invites Brock, the oh so hunky boyfriend, to join her in Budapest for some much needed R & R and a little personal time.

But almost as soon as she gets there she is ordered to come home at once by her bosses. They need her back for a Top Secret reason they won't even tell her about. When she knows she's being watched and followed, Sam, being Sam, ignores the boss and goes on the offensive to find out who is following her and why.

It's hard to tell the good guys from the bad guys and Sam is determined to get to the bottom of things.

With Fallout, Mr. Emmerich has once again shown why we so eagerly wait for the next book to come out. The characters have become like old friends and we are fully invested in every outcome, rooting for Sam and her team and holding our breath as we turn each page.

One of the best books I've read in a long time. If you are a fan of Flynn, Child and Patterson, you are in for a real treat with the Sam Jameson series!

DON'T START IT UNLESS YOU'VE GOT A WEEKEND FREE!

This is a true "page turner", but I couldn't get through it in one night (although I tried). I would recommend reading the "Sam Jameson" series in sequential order, to fully appreciate the character development. I didn't do this, and still thoroughly enjoyed this book, but found some references to what had obviously happened in the past just a little confusing. One very small bone to pick would be what I would consider the inconceivable physical attributes enjoyed by our protagonist. After having been stabbed through the stomach with an iron pipe and left for dead, she is "rescued" and treated overnight by a conveniently located Mossad clandestine team with a doctor. She is sent on her way the next morning with a pocket full of aspirin, able to scale fences, run down the bad guys and otherwise do what needs to be done. While she does admit to being in pain, and has a bit of a limp, she does remarkable well for somebody with the injuries she sustained less than a day before. Ignore that, like I did, and just read it for the sheer excitement of seeing how many critical situations she can handle and how many bad guys she can kill. A great read! Ed B.
