    Excellent narration!
I totally disagree with the other reviewer. The book starts off very slow and at times the only reasons I didnt give up were because I have yet to read a book by MW I didnt like, and because the narrator was so great. She is able to create different voices for each character unlike some narrators that make all the females sound alike and all the male characters sound alike. I'm not British, but I listin to so many British novels I can often differentiate between the regional accents. Ms. Merlington does an excellent job. Oh, and BTW, I'm glad I stuck with the book because it develops into a great British murder mystery. I highly recommend!
    Narration Spoiled Entire Book
Fake British accent, harsh voices, made this novel almost impossible to finish. I cannot give an unbiased review of the story because the narration was so distracting.
    THE DARK ROOM
The narrator, Laural Merlington is awful. Her fake "British" accent had my toes curling in the first chapter. This lady should never have undertaken the narration of a Ruth Rendell mystery. Audible needs to adopt some system of denoting native and non-native readers or allowing members to listen to short exerpts of the narration before committing to buy. Very disappointed.
    Awful
Couldn't put up with the weird accent , think dick van dyke in mary popping.......turned it off after 4 minc

    Funny!
Do get this book if you want a modern, well-written, funny and insightful book about a man dealing with a terrible trauma. I've not finished this yet, but have already laughed out loud more than once. I am enjoying it!
Don't get this book if words like a**h***, m*****f*****, etc. will bother you, as this book is full of such language. The use of the language is part of the books "charm" for me, as the characters are from the generation who are so used to such language that the meaning is lessened.
    Me? I recommend this book!!
    Slow start reflects Webster's mood...
A friend recommended this book. About 1/3 of the way in, I was tempted to say "goodbye a**h***" (the main character acknowledges that he is one) and move on. But I hung in there, and boy am I glad I did! Before the mid-point, things really started to pick up and pieces began to fall into place so you could better understand characters' motivations and see the "big picture". Web's acerbic wit makes an often depressing story, downright funny at times, and much more palatable. Now I'm looking forward to checking out Huston's other books and hoping they are as good as this one...
    Sarcastic, acidic, profane, loved it!
I loved this book and have recommended it to friends. The main character's sarcastic, acidic dialogue is a hoot! As almost every other character tells him he's a as***le. I originally didn't like the narrator, but he grew on me. I didn't care for his main character reading nearly as much as the secondary characters. I thought he did great at the secondary parts.
    Great characters
Huston has created a great cast of characters but I found the story to be somewhat lacking. It was ok but could have been so much better with the interesting characters.
    Hang in there
Don't be tempted to give up on this book 1/3 of the way in. The characters are quirky and interesting, and eventually there is a plot, though it gets a bit heavy-handed at the end. If you are offended by foul language, then be forewarned that this book is a tsunami of obscenities.

    Publisher's Summary:
In her new assignment, Liz quickly uncovers a plot to silence one of these Russians: Nikita Brunovsky, an increasingly vocal opponent of Vladimir Putin. The Foreign Office is adamant about forestalling a crime that could become a full-blown international incident, but there's not a single clue as to how the assassination will be carried out - and Liz is solely responsible for averting disaster. So she goes undercover, attaching herself to Brunovsky's retinue: racing against the clock to determine who betrayed him and suddenly facing a wholly unexpected second task - unmasking a Russian operative working undercover alongside her.
Dame Stella has once again distilled her experience as the first woman Director General of MI5 into a spy novel of arresting psychological complexity and unflagging suspense.

    illegal action
There were to many names with frivolous story lines. the only thing that kept me listening was brilliant performance of Roslyn Landor. The story was lame and uninteresting.
    More fun with Liz
Another interesting thriller from Stella Rimington. In this one Liz has moved jobs to another section but many of the same work colleagues remain in her sphere. This one has Russian and Irish connections. Fascinating and complex.
    Dissapointing
The beginning and middle were OK. Narration was good. The main character and story started with a lot of promise but turned into a real "eye-roller" at the end. Things became very illogical and contrived. If the British secret agents and their supporting teams were this stupid in real life, the UK would be in big trouble!
    Very disappointed
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
I don't really know. Things moved at a snail's pace; too many characters were introduced too quickly; supposed main character was not the focus; conversations between characters were boring and recounted in too much detail. I kept waiting for it to pick up. A lot like waiting for paint to dry. Avoid. I've had to stop listening. Couldn't take it any more and fell like I wasted my credit.
What do you think your next listen will be?
I would like to say another espionage novel but after this one I feel wary.
How could the performance have been better?
I found the different voices the actor affected just too off-putting; too unnatural. Like nails on chalkboard. She should have chosen more subdued voices and not felt the need to differentiate the characters so dramatically through accent and voice.
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Not so much. The one thing I'd say is that it is probably based in real knowledge of the spy trade given whom the author is -- but that's not enough to sustain a reader.

    Incredibly stupid
Words cannot decribe how totaly stupid this story is. The story takes you in 10 different directions and each one is more unbelievable than the previous. Professional hit men need a full round to kill at point blank range and then scream when they recieve a flesh wound. State police give a baby to and old man to hide and falsify police reports, grocery store bag boys make $400.00 a week. This is only a small atempt to describe the idiocy of this story. I would not even give it a half of a star. Save your money and your mind.
    Enjoyable listen...
This book held my attention. Narration is good and the story has a couple of unexpected twists. I really like Stephen Frey and this book, while not his best effort, did not disappoint.

    abridged sucks!!!!!!
why have the unabridged recording of all books in the series except the last two?? anticlimax!
    abridged version
wish there was an unabridged version of this story. although I got the story, i did feel like I was missing out on a lot of the Sarah/Jeffrey/Lena saga.
    Abridged version - felt cheated
Unfortunately this book wasn't available unabridged so had to purchase the abridged version or miss a book. Having not read an abridged book before, I was disappointed, it felt like reading a book that had pages missing. Karin is very good at all the little sub plots and tentacles that pull the whole story together and this book was missing all that. Won't do abridged again
A good listen but not my favourite
Other novels by Karen Slaughter I have read or listened to have been more gripping. Still worth its time as I love the continued story of the main Characters.
im a big fan of karin slaughter
this was my first ever audio book. so i chose an author i know. the voice was very very american and for the first couple of chapters it did grate on me but after that i stopped noticing so much. i am a gardener and was getting fed up with having music on all day so i am now hooked onto my audio books instead. i also think it made me remember jackanory of my childhood. anyway fab book as always from karin thrilling to the end....next one please!

2 stars. It was hard to stay interested.
My mind wandered. The ending was good for Parker but abrupt.
Prior to this book three guys rob an armored car and hide the money in a church. That story is told in Nobody Runs Forever Bk #22. I did not read that book but others say its important to this story. The guys cant spend the money because the serial numbers are known. This story is about how to get the money out of the church and launder it. The authorities have roadblocks and pictures of the guys. Parker is one of the guys. Others find out about the money and try for it.
I was surprised with who Parker contacted to solve the money problem. Its important to read Firebreak before this book to appreciate this part.
The narrator Stephen R. Thorne was good, but I wish he had a rougher, darker, more menacing voice for Parker. His Parker voice was too clean cut and normal sounding.
    THE SERIES:
This is book 24 in the 24 book series. These stories are about bad guys. They rob. They kill. Theyre smart. Most dont go to jail. Parker is the main bad guy, a brilliant strategist. He partners with different guys for different jobs in each book.
If you are new to the series, I suggest reading the first three and then choose among the rest. A few should be read in order since characters continue in a sequel fashion. Those are listed below (with my star ratings). The rest can be read as stand alones.
The first three books in order:
4 stars. The Hunter (Point Blank movie with Lee Marvin 1967) (Payback movie with Mel Gibson)
3 stars. The Man with the Getaway Face (The Steel Hit)
    4 stars. The Outfit.
    Read these two in order:
    5 stars. Slayground (Bk #14)
5 stars. Butchers Moon (Bk #16)
    Read these four in order:
4 stars. The Sour Lemon Score (Bk #12)
    2 stars. Firebreak (Bk #20)
(not read) Nobody Runs Forever (Bk #22)
2 stars. Dirty Money (Bk #24)
Others that I gave 4 or more stars to:
The Jugger (Bk #6), The Seventh (Bk#7), The Handle (Bk #8), Deadly Edge (Bk#13), Flashfire (Bk#19)

His first hunt over, Felix takes on his greatest enemy yet: Butch Karp. Felix's laser-focused, obsessive hatred of Karp simmered during his prison confinement, when he became enamored with radical, fundamental Islamic militant ideology and the realization that Karp, a Jew, was responsible for his sentence. On the loose, Felix strikes Karp where it hurts the most: he befriends Karp's daughter, Lucy.
As inventive and thrilling as the previous Butch Karp novels, this audiobook reveals more about Karp's early years as a rookie in the district attorney's office and as a newlywed to the fearless private detective Marlene Ciampi.
    Members Reviews:
    Excellent!
This was another excellent read in this series. The Karp family is still riven by the adventures of the previous book, but must work together against a new threat. I found the personal character development to be more than ever before the central aspect of the book. And the action and plot were a bit outside the usual range of my suspension of disbelief.... But it was absolutely a page turner, just like the others... Lucy is more central to this adventure than ever, and it is terrible to see her endangered! Felix Tighe is the worst villain created in the entire series, and it is terrifying to see him target Lucy.
    It cannot possibly get better
But it does! Ordering the next book in the series now..... number 16 I believe. Really an awesome series. Love them
    A winner for sure
Robert K Tanenbaum is an attorney by trade and is a great storyteller as well. This legal thriller is easy to read and hard to put down.
    A favorite author
It's classic Tanenbaum. Butch, Marlene, Lucy, the twins and Guma are like old family friends at this point. Even if you don't love this book you will be hooked to read the series. The author intertwines current events, master mind evil and Butch & Marlene will ride in and save the day because good always wins out over evil. This is one of my favorite thriller authors. Lighter than Grisham with the occasional humor of Robert Parker and always a treat to read.
    Two for Two
This is the second Karp book I have read and if it's not up to the first (the first of the series) it is still good, entertaining reading. As with his first installment in the series the author keeps your interest up through a lot of plot twists and turns. I like books that push the edge (intricate serial killers, semi-super private eyes etc) without quite going over. This book does that. A pedantic terrorist, a crazed/possessed serial killer, a courtroom giant, they all all here. I liked the plot and the characters, except for Karp's wife. She can go sell crazy somewhere else, I got tired of her. I'll keep enjoying the series.

the best story so far in the series.
    Any additional comments?

.rhona's family play a big part in the story, her twin sister and her new boyfriend as well as her dad making friends with a customer at his bank. I like this part of the story as much as the crime element which builds up to a surprising ending.

The story keeps you involved -- the author evidently does a lot of background research and weaves it into the story with unexpected twists. He keeps you interested without "sex scenes"
    excellent story
both classic Francis and yet entirely new. a great story. unexpected start and startling climax.
Francis was a great writter, his son will be!
Would you listen to Smokescreen again? Why?
Yes! It would be worth a second even a third listen.
Have you listened to any of Tony Brittons other performances before? How does this one compare?
    Always well read.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Greed always will come back to bite you.
    One of Dick Francis's best!
You'll want to read this with a glass of water near by. You will find plenty of suspense in this story. The story takes place in Africa where the summers are brutally hot.. The main character is a down to earth actor who really has many admirable qualities. He must use ingenuity to stay alive when all these "accidents" keep happening to him. He finally figures out the motive for them but will he live to tell anyone about it? This story engrosses both male and female readers.

a book to analyse how destiny is built
The main character, the psychologist (Tom) has the chance to analyse his point of view with the perspective that only time and years of maturity can give to any person. The contrast with the other main character ( Danny the young criminal) and his resentment he had with Tom because he consider that his report held him in an institution. The reader can get into the world of a young murder and how he grew up with this strong mark difficult to bear and his relationship with the psychologist years latter.
The other aspect to consider is how profession can alter the daily life of a person and change its direction. This work , beside the main theme of the young criminal and his psychologist is the life of this psychologist and his couple , how the profession ( of both members of the couple) oblige a reconsideration of the life they led and how rebuild each life with people more according to their own personality- a valuable work of a great writer .
    Shades of the Past
To be haunted by the ghost of someone dead is a disconcerting enough experience, but the ramifications of a haunting by the living are far more immediate and potentially devastating. Tom Seymour, the protaganist of Pat Barker's nuanced novel "Border Crossing" is a renowned psychologist with a failing marriage whose past comes back to him when he rescues a former patient from a possible suicide attempt. But even as he drags the young man half-dead from the ocean, the questions bubble to the surface. Was this a chance meeting? Or had the patient, whom Tom had treated a decade before as part of the legal team prosecuting a young boy for a brutal murder, come back into his life with some kind of sinister purpose?
Answers are elusive as the Tom relives his past, and examines his own culpability in the unravelling of the boy's life. His search for the truth about Danny, a boy who grew to manhood with the shadow of a murder conviction over his head, plays out over the backdrop of Tom's divorce and the questioning of many of the fundamental beliefs of his life. The facts he uncovers, and those he doesn't, give him insight into his own life that seems more necessary than welcome.
If mysteries are the most compelling stories, and people the most complex mysteries, than Pat Barker has created a small masterpiece here. The author puts forward Tom's frustration and obsession with subtle skill, as the puzzle of Danny's persona eludes a solution like a Rubik's cube.
