    Critic Reviews:
"The story unfolds quickly, accelerates to warp speed, and hurtles on to a stunning climax. And amazingly, in the midst of all the mayhem, Morrell draws more than a few complex characters imbued with layered motives and capable of intelligent dialogue. A wonderfully entertaining action adventure." (Booklist)
"As one would expect from a veteran pro like Morrell, there are plenty of twists, several impressive action set pieces and a narrative that speeds like the souped-up Taurus (combining power and anonymity) that Cavanaugh likes to drive." (Publishers Weekly)

First Aid Kit + another First Aid Kit = See you at the Hospital
Nice to be able to start getting back into this genre. At some point, I stopped reading spy thrillers because the Cold War stopped being as relevant and there were just way too many books focused on that. However, Ludlum / Lustbader / Morrell were always my go to authors and am glad to see that Lustbader and Morrell have kept the torch burning. The Protector is a quick, heart pounding read that left me in kind of a weird place. For no good reason, I want to buy an Emerson CQC knife for myself and a gas mask for our boy, The Protector. What left me a little confused were this guys' loyalties. He made a lot of promised that were not kept, a lot of rules that he didn't follow - if fact, the only way that there can be another novel, with this guy, is if he breaks some more promises. That being said, everything conveniently worked out and it definitely had action and good pacing.
Best of the OMalley series so far!
Best of the O' Malley series so far! and that's saying a lot. This book is about Jack O'Malley, a firefighter and brother who smooths every situation with humor but is very serious under the pranks. He's an unforgettable character, and I had this odd feeling of being proud to have known him, which is ridiculous since he's a fictional character. But that's how these books are. This one has a mystery that I was racing with the characters to try to solve. But like the other books in this series, the characters and relationship developments are masterfully done, and its hard to put the book down.

Fantastic insiders look at Vegas gambling!
Retired cop Tony Vanlentine is back once again, using his expertise of casino gambling and cheating. But he is the good guy, he is called to Vegas to look into allegations that some cheating may be happening in The World Poker Showdown. Valentine encounters some of the more interesting characters to ever cross his path during his career. There is intrigue, danger and of course a scam must be uncovered. Tony Valentine is a wise man, using his vast experience at catching cheaters, as well as a dollop of plain old common sense. You get humour, good detective work and best of all-a look inside the world of casino gambling; which is not always pretty. I have read every one of Swains books and have never been less that greatly entertained. Throw this into your cart, and learn some interesting things about Vegas gambling. You will also see the love Valentine has for his son, who has a habit of getting into sticky situations, yet Valentine stands by his offspring. I listened to Dead Man's Poker in two days at work. But during those two days a lot of paperwork piled up, but hearing a great story makes getting behind at work well worth it. ENJOY.
    Should be labeled Part One
Engaging story, but the author/editor made no effort to complete the story in this book. I assumed there must be a piece missing from my download, but it turns out that one has to buy another book to find out how this mystery is resolved. You'll probably be happier if you purchase it with this understanding.

Gritty noir fight scenes, musings on life and death, and surprising brutality. The Scudder series gets back on track.
After the disappointing Even the Wicked, I was afraid the Matt Scudder novels might be running out of steam. Not to worry because the follow-up Everybody Dies is one of the most entertaining entries in the entire series. I appreciate that Block manages to avoid the cliché of putting his detective-hero in harmâs way during every investigation, but when he decides to make it personal, he pulls no punches. This is the first time since A Ticket to the Boneyard that you really feel like Block could have legitimately ended the series by killing Scudder off.
Of course, since I was forty years late in discovering Blockâs body of work, I unfortunately know there are more books written, which sort of spoils some of the surprise. On the flip side, I did not know which of the minor series characters would survive this bloodbath (not all of them do!), so the suspense was real.
In fact, Everybody Dies fits the mold of a suspense novel rather than a mystery. It does not try for the subtle literary sophistication of Before the Devil Knows Youâre Dead. Nor does it feature a âtwistâ villain reveal like Long Line of Dead Men. Scudderâs sometime gangster sidekick Mick Ballou takes center stage for the first time, and the oft-mentioned head-in-a-duffel-bag anecdote finally pays off in a big way.
The book is full of gritty noir fight scenes, philosophical musings on life and death, and some surprising brutality. The Scudder series gets back on track and left me wanting more.
The latest book in the series is a great addition.
Okay, so I'm a bit tired of Elaine and TJ, but that has more to do with my love for the early books when Matt Scudder was a loner. The Mick situation was getting a little tired too, but I sure didn't like the wrap up for that character. But this was still a fun read. Can't wait for the next one!
    Mick's Story
Book 14 in this addictive series is a stellar example of Mr. Block's prowess. The final sequence is a far superior version of the formulaic Lee Child's Reacher ending, but with verisimilitude that will stick with the reader for weeks. The best Scudder book so far.

    Ripping Yarn? not so much
Abit of a mess plotwise, but the tension increases as time goes by. Dick Hill does a fine job of narrating, although maybe not up to his best work ( aka. Reacher, etc.). The audio quality is abit off for some reason. Entertaining.
    Cracking good global adventure
This is a great adventure novel which spans the globe and ties in elements which work well together. There's a smattering of science for the basis and explanation of the flu virus and its mutations, there's political intrigue and government deception, there are dangerously crazy cult figures, and a great time bomb of a story woven around all these elements.
The main characters Frank (a journalist) and Annie (an epidemiologist / virologist) are sufficiently three-dimensional that they maintain reader (listener) interest throughout the novel.
It's one of the rare audiobooks where I wasn't itching to have it over and done with three quarters of the way through. I also purchased The Genesis Code by the same author, and will probably buy more.
The writing was excellent and the narration was good. The narrator is better with male than female characters, but there was nothing that detracted from the story.
The fast-paced adventure was credible, and there were enough realistic scientific nuggets thrown in to keep even die-hard sceptics happy. It's an interesting read in light of the current H1N1 pandemic.
    Phenomenal Story
John Case is a phenomenal writer and hands down surpasses Dan Brown in mystery thriller novels. I highly recommend. You won't be disappointed.

Like many elaborate plans, Johnson's assassination attempt fails. The journalist falls into Iranian hands and is tortured to confess---a staggering security crisis for the United States. Aided by Wallets and the battle-hardened Marjorie Morningstar---the CIA operatives who trained him---Johnson escapes from Iran. Now back in the United States, Johnson helps Banquo and his CIA cohorts lead a team of federal agents and New York City officials in tracking down a group of suspected Iranian terrorists in New York who are planning to commit nuclear terrorism by dispersing a highly radioactive material throughout the city streets and subways. When Johnson's only daughter is kidnapped by the Iranians, he and Banquo must race against time to save her...and the City of New York.
    Editorial Reviews:
Featuring an FM DJ-style performance by Mel Foster, Banquos Ghost is a timely and satirically barbed political thriller about an aging spymaster named Stewart Banquo who must foil a nuclear attack on American soil.
In Rich Lowry and Keith Kormans novel, Banquo enlists a corrupt liberal journalist named Peter Johnson to enter Iran to ostensibly write a puff piece about the country. Once hes there, he must kill an Iranian nuclear scientist. This scheme, predictably, goes sideways.
Foster has a voice that is full-bodied and does character voices and foreign accents effortlessly, making this thriller both fun and thought-provoking.
    Members Reviews:
Fine as a diversion (3.5 stars)
"Banquo's Ghosts" is decent escapist writing and a well paced thriller. However, the story is banal as are some of the plot points. Even for a thriller there were some moments where I could not make the leap the authors intended.
The novel receives kudos for its unflinching portrayal of Islamic extremism, and its willingness to point out the hypocrisy of the "peaceful religion" and the preening Western press that enables this sham. At times the satire is biting, and dead on. There are also some fun allusions scattered throughout the text that are gamefully deployed and fun to catch. Also fun are some of the thinly veiled caricatures of recognizable people. Arianna Huffington, Frank Rich, and the Huffington Post are clearly lampooned, as our other elements of our political pop culture. "Banquo's Ghosts" is even decently written, at times, and it always moves quickly.
But...there is also plenty to disappoint in this text. The majority of the characterizations are flat and stereotypical, and although the writing is okay it is too often painfully clunky and heavy handed. As for the ending, it is just dull. This is a book for the beach or a rainy afternoon. Nothing more.
For me the biggest joy of this text was its unfettered and open disgust with terrorists, and honestly stating that Islamic extremism is one of the most violent ideologies on the planet. I also enjoyed (and yes I know it was simple and not fleshed out) its celebration of America and those who keep us safe.
So, I guess I am saying I would probably read another book by these authors (in the above conditions) but I also suspect that the majority of the joy one can derive from this text is to be had on the first reading.
    Ghost's will haunt
Banquo's Ghosts provides a fast, enjoyable, yet thought provoking read on threats facing all free nations today.

"The suspense is unrelenting!" (San Francisco Chronicle)
    Members Reviews:
    Very Suspenseful!
This is the first time I have read a book by Ms. Walker and it won't be the last! I really wanted this book in a Kindle book but the price was much too high for my limited income, but I found a good used physical hard back book I could afford, a little over $3, so that is what I ordered. And the book was in perfect condition. My only problem is that I kept tapping the side of the pages to make them turn--LOL!
Back to the story. This is one of the most suspenseful books I have ever read--especially because it involves children. The children's lives are held on by a thread by a mad man--a religious zealot of a cult. He reminds me a lot of Charles Manson because he is so insane and rambles like Mansion does. And he has tremendous power over his followers just like Manson. He is able to make his followers do hideous killings of other people--especially people who want to leave his cult.
The story centers around our heroine, Molly Cates, a reporter. Molly happens to be divorced from a police officer who is working on the hostage situation with the children. Unlike most divorced couples, they have more than a friendly relationship--which works well in the story. About the only thing that they really disagree on in the story is about a dog who has post traumatic syndrome. But somewhere along the story the dog turns into a real hero for Molly. That's all I am going to say about Molly and the dog, you'll just have to read the story to find out what happened.
Molly works very hard during the story and puts her investigative skills to good use to find out information to help law enforcement with trying to rescue the children and the bus driver who is being held captive with the children. There are many likeable characters (outsiders) in the story who help supply information that will help with the children's rescue.
With all the many twists and turns during the story, the suspense just keeps building the closer it comes to the time limit that that Mordecai the zealot has put on the lives of the children. It is toward the end of the story that you find out why the title "Under the Beetle's Cellar" is significant to the story--it is one of the keys to rescuing the children.
I have not quite finished reading the story, I am racing toward the end (close). The main reason I am reviewing this book now instead of later, is because I wanted to post my review while everything was still fresh in my mind. If you like action novels and novels with a lot of suspense, then this is the novel for you. I am so glad I bought it even though I could not afford the Kindle addition--sigh.
    Brilliant suspense
Under the Beetle's Cellar was recommended to me as an example of one of the best suspense this person had ever read. At first, being a parent, I did not want to read about a school bus full of children and a bus driver being kidnapped -- 1) it's too horrific to contemplate much less spend time reading, 2) how could an author engage me with a Vietnam veteran bus driver being trapped with these children? But I kept reading to see what made Mary Willis Walker her "fav" suspense.

    Critic Reviews:
"Unger has proved herself to be a master of pacing and suspense and DIE FOR YOU is no exception; in fact, it is the most nerve-wracking, hand-wringing book I've read by her to date. This truly is edge-of your-seat action and my whole body was tense while I read. BUY THIS BOOK!" (Crimespree magazine)
    Members Reviews:
    Involving
I can understand Ted's feelings about the story unfolding slowly, but for me this was the very quality that made it a satisfying story. Some books are driven by the speed of action, others - like Unger's - dig deep into what is being experienced by the characters. If you are an introspective kind of person, I suspect you will like the book.
And, I found the story line believable enough. After all, it was not as if the main protagonist was imbued with unusually great skill, intelligence or strength. Pig-headed persistence was all.
    disappointed
The pace of this book was annoyingly slow. It was held back by the author's need to tell you about every character's thought processes, rationalizations etc. The premise of the story is also significantly unbelievable - an ordinary untrained female author takes on a murderer/criminal and chases him on her own, and without help, around the world while avoiding the police, in order to gain insight into his betrayal of her.
    Meh
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Use of first person and third person narrative in the book .... what the hell? Choose a point of view and stick to it.
What was most disappointing about Lisa Ungers story?
Story not as engaging as some of Unger's other books.
What aspect of Ann Marie Lees performance would you have changed?
    The performance was fine.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Die for You?
Remove the story line of the sister, or at least make it relevant somehow to the main plot.
    Any additional comments?
It felt very much like a Franken-book - two stories meshed together that didn't really have any business being in the same book, particularly with the constant switching between first person and third person. This really bugged me. The story line with the sister is completely irrelevant to the major plot line. I also found I didn't care much about the protagonist as she continues to make one stupid move after another. I didn't buy that she could be so blindly fixed upon finding someone who has screwed her over so badly and is obviously a dangerous man involved with dangerous people. I'm a fan of Lisa Unger, but the story just didn't interest me as much as her earlier books have.

    Neat Ending
As soon as I finished a book in this series I go on to the next one. The characters became friends in my first book. I love the slogan "We are a domestic agency and don't do murder." That is until a suicide or accident changes the death to murder.
The series is set in London, the protagonist, Bea Abbott returns to her home after the death of her husband. There are two workers at the agency, Maggie, and Olivier, both have a backstory. Ben's son, Max who has been elected to the House of Commons. Max is married to Nicole who is a shallow person. We have her first husband Piers who is Mac's father. The Agency's office is in the basement of Bea's home. The characters have grown with each book and the interaction between them is outstanding. The format is the same in all the books I have read but each story is unique.
In this book, Bea gets a frantic call from an employee that the owner of the house is dead. Bea arrives and finds a strange setup. She is left alone with the dead man waiting for his daughter to arrive. From this point, the story twists between the different factions of the series until there is a murder. The ending is a surprise and unusual. I highly recommend this book and series.
Another perfect Abbott Agency mystery novel
Veronica Heley's Bea Abbott series has proven most addictive. Like a chain-smoking fiend who lights the next ciggy off the current one, I finish one Bea Abbott novel and immediately embark on the next!
In the wake of her beloved husband's death, English widow Bea Abbott, now runs the Abbott Agency, a domestic staffing temp agency in London, with the help of a once-silly girl named Maggie and Oliver Ingraham, a teenaged computer whiz. In "False Step," the third in a series, Bea responds to a plea from one of her contractors, Florrie Green: Would Bea await with a dead client until the police come so Florrie can get to her next gig? Police rule Matthew Kent's death a suicide, but Bea immediately has her doubts. After all, why would Kent -- a 60ish actor who works as an old-fashioned pantomime dame -- have sparkly red high heels that didn't fit his feet? Other discrepancies make Bea wonder.
Readers will figure out what happened to Matthew Kent, if not exactly why or how, halfway through the novel. However, as with the episodes ofColumbotelevision series (viewers were tipped off to the murderer immediately), the fun is watching the Abbott Agency's irregulars catch up with and expose the culprits.
There's so much to love in this series. The late Hamilton Abbott may be gone, but he's certainly not forgotten. Bea recalls his wisdom and generosity frequently, making him seem a character in the books, despite his demise.

The way that Bruno manipulates subtly the characters in the best interest if the town.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
The plots of his books are gentle and cleaver, not fast moving ,but interesting
The food inclusions and Bruno's fascination for cheeses ,truffles and his prowess in the kitchen makes interesting listening and the taste buds water.
    Any additional comments?
I have listened to three books but not in sequence , wish I had listened in order but still I Enjoyed the book
    Mediocre
Bit disappointed in this as I really enjoyed Devils Cave. The story was not so gripping and the narrator did not hold me. Am not sure if I will listen to anymore but may try if different narrator.
Bruno - one of the best detectives :)
Clever, entertaining and leaves you constantly wanting to listen. After driving home from work, I sat in my drive way because I so eager to find out what happened! Well worth a listen and Ric Jerrom's voice works really well :)
    Charming and quaint
Makes you fall in love with France whilst providing insight into life in a small town and old sins which come back to haunt people. The narrator has a soothing voice and brings the characters to life. And there are the great recipes for authentic French farm cooking. Meet Bruno local Chief of police working on racist murder case that is not what it looks like... enjoy.
    Bad Accents
Could of done without the regional English accents for French characters.
Hard to mentally escape when it reminds you of being down the local Tesco.
