    Format: Unabridged
Length: 13 hrs and 22 mins
    Language: English

    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense
    Publisher's Summary:
Long after anyone expected Kate to do anything with her life, she did. Using the journals left behind by her aunt and grandmother, she wrote a novel based on a very real, generation-old love story that ended in tragedy. On the other side of town, Emily is about to set fire to her life. She's in a dead-end job and is involved with the wrong man; she can feel herself being drawn into darkness, with horrific consequences. With nowhere to go, she finds herself on the run.
Without knowing each other, and with lives that couldn't be more different, Kate and Emily head to the same point on the map: Heart Island, an idyllic place in the middle of a lake in the Adirondacks, owned for generations by Birdie Burke's family. The harsh and unyielding Birdie is at one with this island, which has a terrifying history all its own. She, too, has consequences to face.
Heartbroken is a tense, mesmerizing novel about the limits of dysfunctional families, of an island haunted by dark memories and restless ghosts, and of the all-too-real demons we must battle.
    Critic Reviews:
"Unger delivers compelling, fully drawn characters while at the same time putting the thrill in thriller. A first-class page-turner." (Booklist)
"[A] tense psychological thriller.... Unger skillfully builds the fissures of each of [her characters'] lives as she illustrates the power of the heart and the corrosive nature of lies." (Publishers Weekly)
"Will captivate fans of mystery and psychological suspense. This is one of Unger's best novels yet." (Library Journal)

    Can't even get into it
What would have made Heartbroken better?
I like a lot of her other books, but this is in a different style. I don't even know if I'll finish it.
an okay book - not as good as her first novel.
What did you like best about Heartbroken? What did you like least?
good character development - but - I was always waiting for "something" to happen.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
I guess the most interesting was about "Birdie" the mother of the Heart family. The least interesting was about "Lulu" - a spoiled - beautiful teenager - and all of her "manipulations".
What aspect of Amanda Carlins performance would you have changed?
    none - it was good
Was Heartbroken worth the listening time?
hummm............. I guess - a little slow. I wasn't as "anxious" to listen to it everyday (on my run) like I usually am with other really good novels.
    Any additional comments?
Better off listening to Unger's first book "Beautiful Lies" - now that was an awesome page turner - I'm still "waiting" for her to write another one like that!
    depressing
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Written well - story okay - but was really depressing - no happy endings here
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
    depressing
What three words best describe Amanda Carlins voice?
    fine
Do you think Heartbroken needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
nope nope nope - hard to go from that depressing

    Publisher's Summary:
In 1931, Nate Heller - on a leave of absence from the Chicago P.D. - goes to Hawaii to work as an investigator for family friend Clarence Darrow. One of five Honolulu natives accused of the rape of recent bride Thalia Massie has been murdered; facing murder charges are Thalias naval officer husband and her socialite mother. Something doesnt seem right, and Darrow has brought Heller in to get to the bottom of it. A first-rate detective thriller, Max Allan Collins Damned in Paradise shimmers with authenticity as it drives inexorably towards its grave conclusion. Heller - aided by Chang Apana, the real-life model for Charlie Chan - determines that while Thalia surely was raped, the identity of her attackers are in question, and the lush tropical setting cannot dispel the morass of bigotry, lies, and revenge through which the young detective must wade to reach the bitter truth.

STRANGE FRUIT HANGING FROM HAWAIIAN PALMS.....
Where does Damned in Paradise rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
The Nathan Heller series is only a "guilty pleasure" for me. I usually read more complex historical books based on fact. I don't want to downplay Max Allen Collins' talent but I've listened to over 2,000 audiobooks and would not rank it very highly among those works. However, that doesn't mean it's not a great book. If I compare this book to others in the written "film noir" genre, I'd have to say it's in the Top 5.
What other book might you compare Damned in Paradise to and why?
The only books like this, done this well, are all by this author.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
The amount of racism disturbed me. I have never heard the word "nigger" so many times without one single black person in the book anywhere! The hate was directed to the citizens of Hawaii - not the white ones on Pearl Harbor - the real Hawaiians whose island the whites took over. This story could have just as easily taken place in Mississippi with black men being railroaded over some allegedly raped cheating married white woman. That's what my title refers to: the unfair justice given to people of color. The only difference here is that the hatred is directed towards Hawaiians. Who knew there was some other "niggers" in this country that whites dogged out?!"Southern trees bear a strange fruit,Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze,Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees."
    Any additional comments?
Nathan Heller is always charming and Dan John Miller gives him a lovable "Richie Cunningham" quality.

If you want to write terrorism thrillers, you really should be a better plot conceiver
    Very Thrilling
Would you consider the audio edition of Siege to be better than the print version?
Not neccessary, but the audio edition is much easier to handle.
What other book might you compare Siege to and why?
Must be some other work of Simon Kernick bacause he is a master of that kind of novels.
What does Paul Thornley bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
He does e great job, indeed, what bring the listener "closer to what happens".
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Every part was on a high level.
    Any additional comments?
Simon Kernick is the "one and only" master of his kind of writing.
    Wow! what a fast-paced thriller
I'd meant to listen to this book over a week or so but was so gripped by the story I kept returning to the recording eager to find out what happened next. I felt I was witnessing the siege in real-time as the events only span about 15 hours. There are twists and turns and surprises along the way and moral dilemmas for the characters to wrestle with. Paul Thornley's narration is excellent and help to jack-up the tension. Great stuff!
    His best yet ?
Reading his novels out of sequence probably doesn't aid a balanced overview BUT this is an incredibly well put together storyline.
Paul Thornley is by some distance the best narrator for these types of books.
    Highly highly recommended

I know that I am late to the party in discovering this series, but now that I have, I can't get enough. This story takes Dane and Bones across the American southwest, visiting landmarks such as the ruins of the Anasazi. Of course they have two beautiful women working with them, one of them being Jade Ihara.
I listened to the audiobook version of this story and I have to admit that there were some laugh out loud moments for me with the comments made by Bones. Jeffrey Kafer did a wonderful job with the narration, and I am heading to Audible to see which story I want to listen to next.

    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense
    Publisher's Summary:
Philip Kerr has won widespread critical acclaim for this imaginative reworking of the mythology surrounding the John F. Kennedy assassination. The Shot offers fresh twists and turns while capturing the colorful and turbulent America of 1960. Tom Jefferson is a hitman - and a good one. Hes just taken down a former Nazi from 150 yards away. His talent is noticed by the Mob, which is fresh off rigging the presidential election for Kennedy. Tom accepts a contract to eliminate Fidel Castro, which would open Cuba to organized crime. But when he uncovers stunning information about the new president, Tom drops Castro from his agenda and fixes his crosshairs on Kennedy instead. Now the very people who hired him are his enemies, and the race to a gripping climax is on. The Shot is filled with enough plot twists and nail-biting suspense to captivate conspiracy theorists and anyone who loves a taut thriller. Narrator George Guidall moves the excitement along at a feverish pace.
    Members Reviews:
Kerr is always solid in his supposition: It's all about the Story.
Kerr is a terrific historian. He's terrific with conjecture and machismo and the florid imprint of an era. He's totally solid painting the picture of "feasibility" - as any tale of Camelot and its assassins is want to do. He takes you there and immerses you, just as he does in Nazi Berlin in the Bernie Gunther books. He takes you through men's heads and intentions, through their frustrations, exhortations, brave and bombastic culminations, unexpected fulminations, tall blond or red headed palpitations, and very often their last exhalations. All plans, of mice and men, are set straight as arrows and end crooked and scattered throughout the gutters of history. Only one thing is sure, the men who run the politics of this country, and the men who run its crime are all hell bent with the same intentions, the same laments and facades, the same self-serving noblesse and in their oblige they often hire the same hit men. The Shot is a great sketch of what made the 50's become the 60's and how and perhaps why there arose so much anger toward the till then so vaunted American way.
    A Stunner! So Good!
Conspiracy theorist I am not -- but somehow, Kerr has suggested a course of events relative to US/Cuba relations in the 1950/60 era and the assassination of JFK so plausible that it is terrifying. It is a long story filled with lots of backstory on all the major characters, which include some wise guys, soviet spies, US intelligence agents, FBI, and more. And it is just a story. But it suggests that US government agencies, while warring against each other in the day could have been guilty of covering their ***es and thus, allowing the death of JFK. I enjoyed this one for its historical settings during the golden ages in Las Vegas, New York and Miami. Very good story that will stun you in the end!
    A Great Shot
What made the experience of listening to The Shot the most enjoyable?
I really enjoy the content and pace of Philip Kerr's books and have read / listented to virtually all of them. This one stood out as being slightly different to his usual topics. However Cuba seems to be a recurring theme in the Bernie Gunther series as well. Some of the stories of the later part of Gunther's career almost overlap the period leading up to the Bay of Pigs / Assassination of JFK.

Life for narcotics detective Jack Walsh is one continuous drunken binge - until one blurry night when his car veers into an oncoming car, killing the son of Bostons premier crime boss. Now Jack must decide if he wants to hide from DAngelos vengeful compatriots or reclaim his life.
    Members Reviews:
A fantastic story, told by the Master.
I'd never heard of Kenneth Abel, but he sure can spin a yarn. The story of Jack Walsh and his struggles through the Boston Police Department, with his alcoholism and with his family, all ring true. The plot runs all over the place, but never becomes incoherent. The book is entertaining throughout. The mob boss DiAngelo is a very clever man, and the intrigues that swirl around him and his cronies read beautifully; just like the real thing, at least insofar as we know them in fiction. The book is fast-paced without being shallow. Walsh is an honest cop surrounded by corruption, something like the story of Frank Serpico, which is mentioned in the text. However, Walsh is not trying to stamp out the corruption and become a hero. He is merely trying to stay alive, with local cops and Feds swarming around him to try to nail DiAngelo.
Frank Muller was the finest narrator who ever lived. He had such a repertoire of voices, accents, dialogues, moods and inflections that the reader is thrilled at virtually everything he does. He narrated 200 books in his career, and almost all of them are great. His range as a narrator knows no bounds. He never hits a false note. You can listen to him for hours and hours and never get tired of the experience. From a book like this to John Grisham to Moby Dick to Charles Dickens to the George Smiley series to The Horse Whisperer: listen to him and you will recognize a towering talent that, I am guessing, will never be approached by any other narrator. Frank left us with a unique gift, and I feel lucky to be able to hear his work. He can do no wrong, IMHO (in my humble opinion). Do yourself a favor. You will not be disappointed. I guarantee it.
Just a Tremendous Thriller All the Way
This has to be one of the better suspense novels I've listened to. So what makes a book worthy of 5 stars for me? I can't say this is set in stone, but on the whole it must contain:
    1. A great story. This is the story of a conflicted ex-cop who has lost everything. Driving drunk, he's killed the son of a mafia don. He's in hiding, being cornered by the Feds as well as the mafia.
    2. The main characters have to be likable, someone I can relate too and pull for. Jack Welsh is smart and resourceful, trying to understand what has happened and why. But he's also vulnerable. He suffers, but he doesn't let himself be swallowed up in self pity.
    3. Great narration. It's read by the late Frank Mueller, one of the best narrators ever.
So it's an easy 5 stars!
    Muller killing it again!
I can't recommend this book enough. I am worn out by the cop drama books because they are they are just the same old stories time and again. This particular book shocked me because it puts a brand new spin on that particular genre. The reason I downloaded this book was that I have yet to be disappointed by anything Muller has read, and I was pleased once again.

and I was not disappointed by this book
I'm a huge fan of the Percy Jackson series as well as the Tres Navarre series, and I was not disappointed by this book. I felt that the story was intriguing, most characters were real and interesting. Although few of the women seemed shallow, there were enough other interesting ones to make up for that. The storyline had enough twists and turns but not too outrageous to confuse the readers. A couple of things that bothered me, too many people taking justice in their own hands without consequences troubled me some. Also, there is one character whose fate is never clearly explained (unless I missed it)....what came of the confrontation between 2 young men on the pier? There is an explanation later that makes no sense.
Anyway Riordon, being a school teacher, seems to understand the trouble teenagers go through and the difficulty their parent have in dealing with them.
    Five Stars

An illegal immigrant is found murdered in an Edinburgh housing scheme: a racist attack, or something else? Rebus is drawn into the case, but has other problems: his old police station has closed, and his masters would rather he retire than stick around. As Rebus investigates, he must visit an asylum seekers' detention centre, deal with the sleazy Edinburgh underworld, and maybe even fall in love....
Siobhan has problems of her own. A teenager has disappeared from home and Siobhan is drawn into helping the family, which means travelling too close to the web of a convicted rapist. Then there are two skeletons - a woman and an infant - found buried beneath a concrete cellar floor in Fleshmarket Close. The scene begins to look like an elaborate stunt - but whose, and for what purpose? And how can it tie to the murder on the unforgiving housing-scheme known as Knoxland?
    Members Reviews:
I love the Rebus stories and unabridged are best.
Cannot fault the story (usual high Rankin quality) but not always happy with Cotcher's accents. He does Edinburgh fine but Brummie, London and Aussie are less believable. Far and away the best Rebus reader is James McPherson in my opinion.
    Love Rebus
This is another classic rebus novel, really enjoyed the 2 independent stories going on at once and how they stories end up coming together.
    Enthralling and good narration.
Definitely worth a listen if you like Rebus.
    Gripping
Rebus at his best and the vocalisation of Tom Cotcher surpasses any other reader I have heard so far
    Classic Rebus
As usual Rankin starts off with what you assume to be a fairly straight forward murder but the plot soon twists and turns and you wonder where it's all going to go. Again, as usual, there's a theme, in this case immigration and you do wonder if Rebus' views are Rankin's, not that it matters.
The narration is good, the Scot's accent just right. Having lived north of te border for 15 years it was fun to hear some of the phrases and wordes again but for those of you not familiar with the vernacular we have the trusty Sargeant to provide the questionning looks.
All in all a good addition to the canon.
    Not the Best of Rankin
This Novel has the enjoyable language of Ian Rankin but the plot never seems to Work . Leaves the reader with loose ends that dont Seem to tie up.

A secret government agency threatened with amalgamation within a bigger department. A retired policeman trying to get used to his new career in the private sector. Each of these strands of a brilliant narrative is populated with superbly-drawn characters, and woven into a stunningly exciting drama by the undisputed king of South African suspense fiction. Not only a heart-pounding thriller, but also a love story and a fabulous kaleidoscopic picture of South African society, this is the finest novel yet from an author whose reputation is growing all around the world.
    Members Reviews:
    Disjointed
I love Deon Meyer and have listened to many of his books. Parts of the book were really good but in the end he did not bring it together in the end for me.
great book compromised by inconsistent narration
Would you listen to Trackers again? Why?
yes, this is a complex story with great characters that I hope can be developed in further books
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
the plot is not as immediately compelling as some of his other books but it is nevertheless very rewarding.
Did the narrators do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
Saul Reichlin is as accomplished as ever. He makes his characters absolutely believable. He reads with intelligent understanding of the writer's intentions. He should have done all the narration. He alone does the South African accents convincingly. The other two narrators spoil the production.
    Narration below par
Deon Meyer is a special writer and I love all his books. I was disappointed with how little effort Rupert Degas put into the correct pronunciation of some Afrikaans words like "Oom" and "Karoo" as well as some place names. When the word is used once like a place name one can grit your teeth and move on, but when the word is used repeated it gets too much - it spoils the experience to a large extent. Give me Saul Reichlin every time!
Great book, not so great narration
I enjoyed this Deon Meyer novel for a number of reasons. His insight into human behaviour and how he can get into his character's heads is remarkable. He had completely different storylines which came together at the end (this aspect could perhaps be done a bit better), but the story lines were interesting and intriguing in and of themselves.
Saul Reichlin is by far one of my favourite narrators and I am always amazed at his excellent rendering of various accents, especially his range of South African ones. But herein lies my criticism. With respect to the other narrators who also participated in this production, why did he not narrate the whole book on his own? He would have been more than capable of handling it himself. In my opinion the other voice actors detracted from the production and lowered the quality of the final product. Their accents were also not well researched at all, not getting basic words right like the Afrikaans "Oom".
The other thing I found strange is the use of the term "hell's bells" as a form of mild cussing. I have only listened to the English translation and don't know what the original Afrikaans term was, but I don't know of any Afrikaner who uses that term.

Another excellent police procedural from Sellers
This is the second in the series of police procedurals by L.J. Sellers. She has based these books around Eugene, Oregon, with gruff, good-hearted Detective Jackson as her protagonist. Sellers has a gift for creating a compelling narrative that swiftly moves the reader through the plot without a lot of fluff. The story plays out just as a good police investigation. There are red herrings, blind alleys, and department politics to contend with. The book reads like an episode of Law and Order, complete with a few moral lessons along the way. Such as...
SEMI-SPOILER ALERT: In "The Sex Club," we learned to keep a sharp eye on our children, and to avoid extremist religious viewpoints with an unbending moral code. Here, in "Secrets to Die For," we continue the theme of broken parent/child relationships with children withholding things about themselves from their parents. In both these first two novels, the fanatical parents wind up bringing great harm to their children through their misbegotten actions. Karma is tough in Sellers' universe!
The narrator, Damon Abdallah, is purely perfunctory in his delivery. He is annoyingly monotone during most of the narration. We only hear vocal variety during the moments of dialogue. His Detective Jackson is a morose bore, though I found him more tolerable this time - perhaps simply because I was used to Mr. Abdallah from "The Sex Club." But even he couldn't sink the book for me.
Good, but not the best of the series
Secrets to Die For is a sound murder mystery. Author Sellers does not build the suspense as well as usual for her. There is a nice twist near the end. Detective Wade Jackson is a likable protagonist. The series is good enough when books from authors I really like are not available. I'll continue the series.
    Lecture ~ preacher
Secrets to die for; my second Detective Jackson book. Coming from law enforcement, a parent & grow up in PDX, Jackson is very believable &lovable. Story lines are suspenseful and exciting, keeps you wanting more! Her characters are extreme and over the top and that keeps you interested! It is obvious the author is a hard core liberal and I could do with the PC literature she adds to her books! I listen to escape not be reminded how to tip toe around. With that said her she is a excellent writer! I will continue to see what Jackson and his daughter are up too!
    Like the story, but.......
I really like the story this author has to tell, but don't know that I'll continue with the series. This story starts out with an open-shut case for Jackson, that ends up being a 'who Really done it?'. You think you have things figured out, but she tends to drop a rather unknown character in the mix at the end, which I'm not complaining about.
