    Unreal... in a GOOD Way!!!
If you could sum up The Babylon Rite in three words, what would they be?
    HO, LY, and CRAP!!
This story is all over the place geographically and historically. Imagine Raiders of the Lost Ark, Se7en, The DaVinci Code, and one of Led Zeppelin's mystical/mythical songs all mixed together with ancient Peruvian rituals, organic hallucinogenic drugs, and a who what why and when non-stop race unravel more than one mystery.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
    Without question.
    Great twists.
Have you listened to any of R.C. Brays other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes - big Bray fan. He really upped his game with this one - try to picture one guy performing a conversation among a Scotswoman, an Australian bloke, two English cops, paranoid elderly witch doctors and more all while using his own voice to narrate. It's pretty astounding not to mention that he never detracts from the story with his accents or delivery.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
MANY times I found my mouth to be in a permanent "O" with my eyes bugged out of my head....
Other times I had to press pause until the laughter died down (Boris Valentine... awesome character - awesome narration!)
    Amateur writing, pro reader
I'm a sucker for the religious conspiracy genre, but Tom Knox's writing ruined what could have been a really clever approach. I'm down with the uncouth, open to engaging with unlikable characters, but when a DCI looks at a woman bleeding out in a wardrobe and thinks about how pretty she must have been? Then a lead male character listens to a key female character being raped and frets how the rapist was doing it in earshot to torture HIM? Not a single opportunity was lost to describe a female character in terms of her sexual desirability no matter how dire the circumstances.
The only thing that saved this book was RC Bray's performance. As usual, he delivers on pacing, unique character voices, and emotional impact. I suspect my Scottish and Aussie friends might have a word to say about his use of their accents, but at least it was consistent!
It almost ( but not quite ) gets you there....
Is there anything you would change about this book?
    A far better wrap up.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
Dissappointment and a vague sense of being taken for an unwanted ride.
What about R.C. Brays performance did you like?
    Brilliant.

Hat Spaß gemacht/ was a fun read

    great
loved it . never wanted to leave it down
film would be good some time
    GOOD
Would you be willing to try another one of Michael Boatman and Steven Boyer s performances?
I think it is better when an actual female takes on the voice of a woman - like in MERRY CHRISTMAS ALEX CROSS
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The frustration when Alex was wrongly accused and ended up in a cell
    Any additional comments?
I like the fact we see Bree as a detective again in this book and not just Alex's wife (like in the last 2). She was a "super-cop" when he first met her and suddenly, her work wasn't mentioned once they married. Don't like the fact Damien is STILL away from the home (WHY was that ever written in - from a young age too). This is the usual Alex Cross offering - I like the twist where Alex finds himself on the wrong side of the law! I also like the mention of the Charter schools / KIPP schools - well done James!

    Publisher's Summary:
Paul Carlson, a brilliant young scientist, is summoned from his laboratory job to the remote Indonesian island of Flores to collect DNA samples from the ancient bones of a strange, new species of tool user unearthed by an archaeological dig. The questions the find raises seem to cast doubt on the very foundations of modern science, which has proven the world to be only 5,800 years old, but before Paul can fully grapple with the implications of his find, the dig is violently shut down by paramilitaries.
Paul flees with two of his friends, yet within days one has vanished and the other is murdered in an attack that costs Paul an eye, and very nearly his life. Back in America, Paul tries to resume the comfortable life he left behind, but he can't cast the questions raised by the dig from his mind. Paul begins to piece together a puzzle which seems to threaten the very fabric of society, but world's governments and Martial Johnston, the eccentric billionaire who financed Paul's dig, will stop at nothing to silence him.

Sci-fi thriller in a biblically accurate universe
Prophet of Bones posits an alternate universe where radiocarbon dating has conclusively proven the world is only 5800 years old (their Darwin was wrong). All the rest of science, including biology works normally. Our hero is a young man unwittingly entangled with forces and powerful people that he neither understands nor appreciates. His drive to decipher and understand inconsistencies and seemingly random actions on the part of the powers that be, drives the plot from a pure sci-fi to an alternative universe thriller and a potential global coverup.
The story is fast paced, although portions drag a bit with extended segments that are irrelevant to the overall plot (the flashbacks are less than useful). Once evolution has been eliminated from this universe the listener is face with deciding if the theme is one of a massive coverup to maintain the fiction of biological origins or if other machinations are afoot motivating the characters. There's little character development beyond a few central figures and the author presents little in the way of how this alternative world operates with so many biological contradictions. The ending is consistent with these skewed perspectives.
The narration is excellent with great attention to genders and age.
    A Great Believable Story
This Story got my interest from the beginning, and kept it right up to the end.
If you liked Island of Dr Moreau, you'll love Prophet of Bones. Excellent Narration.
    Odd
Not sure where this story sits. Seems to have been written as propaganda for those who believe the world is just 5800 years old. Genetic experimentation on cross breeding of species and the mystery that starts the story just seems to fade away and is barely relevant to the plot.
I saw this through to the end but wondered why I did!

    Intense
Land starts on one road and moves to a different strategy in telling this story. The reader can be lead to believe in a super natural conflict when perhaps it is more than explainable. The story line borrows from some classic movies in the past and the setting for those who loved Indiana Jones will find similarities but he does a nice job;in establishing his own unique conflict. Land is enjoyable without bogging down on any boring characters.
    Surprise......
This author just takes your breath away with his books. They could have been written today, as he doesn't include many technical items so that they are a great and fun read.

Godsent is a wild religious thriller, a page-turner that keeps you guessing until the very last page. Burton, in his fiction debut, crafts a tightly-wound narrative with a heart-pounding plot and emotional resonance that will ring true to anyone with children of their own, all while the fate of humanity hangs in the balance.
    Editorial Reviews:
Ethan is a child with startling abilities and a secret even he doesnt know. Conversatio, a shadowy underground organization, wants to protect him, but the Grand Inquisitor, an artificial intelligence, wants him killed. Kate, his virgin mother, believes her child is the Son of God. In the style of religious thrillers like The Da Vinci Code, Richard Burtons novel Godsent is a fast-paced swashbuckler of divine proportions. Audio and television actress Julia Whelan, star of the long-running television series Once and Again, keeps the tension high with her lively, engaged performance.
    Critic Reviews:
A fresh and exciting thriller, Godsent takes you on an unexpected journey. People of all faiths will be talking about this book. (Dan Nathan, co-host of CNBCs Options Action)
    Members Reviews:
Thriller? Depends on how you look at it
I am not sure that I would describe this book as a thriller in the traditional sense, however I started listening to this book on Friday evening and could not put it down. This is one of those rare books where I just had to keep going to see how it turned out.
The subject matter is risky, especially considering that this is Mr. Burton's first novel. He walks a tightrope that at times seems to teeter on the brink of going too far in one direction or another risking offending the deeply religious or the deeply agnostic yet somehow it all worked for me.
Is some suspension of disbelief required in reading this book? Absolutely, but then again if you are fond of stories of vampires, warlocks and witches, this should not be too difficult for most readers to do.
In the end the book succeeded for me on all levels. I liked the message the author delivered in the end, I characters were believable and well thought out, and the story moved at a clip that kept me engaged until the very end.
Julia Whelan is a master narrator. I loved her voice and she managed to convey something of the characters of the book with few exceptions. I think she may quickly become one of my favorites and I plan to seek out other books she reads.
Make sure you know your bible history!
If you could sum up Godsent in three words, what would they be?
    Fascinating. Intense. Worthwhile.
Who was your favorite character and why?
    Ethan.

In the words of Appleby himself: 'Those whom the gods wish to destroy, they first make mad. Just a little mad, for a start. Inclined, say, to unreasonable jokes in the course of business. But later - well, very mad indeed.'
    Members Reviews:
    Very good Innes
I'd forgotten this book and was delighted to listen to itone of Innes's best, I think, and in his semi-thrilling vein. Appleby is poking his nose into an investigation where it doesn't really belong, now that he's a mucky-muck; he is drawn in to an art fraud by a man at his club, again through a connection of Judith's, and then by a missing dinner-guest. Clever as always, but with the beating heart that can sometimes be missing from Innes's cooler works.
    Fascinating
Some wonderful writing, particularly in the early scenes. Matt Addis IS Appleby for me. Highly recommend all his Appleby books.

Lewis Packford, the great Shakespearean scholar, was thought to have discovered a book annotated by the Bard - but there is no trace of this valuable object when Packford apparently commits suicide. Sir John Appleby finds a mixed bag of suspects at the dead man's house, who might all have a good motive for murder. The scholars and bibliophiles who were present might have been tempted by the precious document in Packford's possession. And Appleby discovers that Packford had two secret marriages, and that both of these women were at the house at the time of his death.
    Members Reviews:
    "Farewell, farewell...why did I marry"
Sex rarely rears its oh-so-indiscreet head in mysteries starring Sir John Appleby, Michael Innes's donnish detective. When it does, it is usually adorned in the lineaments of farce, as is the case in "The Long Farewell" (1958).
Lewis Packford, the great Shakespearean scholar, has come to marriage late in his bookish career, and it has enchanted him so thoroughly that he goes to the altar twice---without an intervening divorce. When both wives simultaneously descend upon Urchins, his ancestral mansion, he appears to take the easy way out of his bigamous dilemma. He is found in his library (most of Innes's corpses are to be found in libraries) with a bullet through his head, a revolver in his hand, and a suicide note with the ink still wet, by his side.
Most appropriately, the suicide note is a quotation from the Bard--not Othello's "Farewell, farewell...why did I marry," as you might expect. It is rather "Farewell, a long farewell..." from Cardinal Wolsey's soliloquy in Shakespeare's "King Henry the VIII" (Act III, Scene 2).
Packford had been dropping hints about the discovery of a sixteenth-century Italian manuscript, annotated by Shakespeare himself, as the framework for his "Othello," but this priceless object seems to have disappeared from the scholar's library upon his death.
Sir John Appleby finds it difficult to believe that Packford committed suicide (he thinks the suicide note is a bit uninventive for such a brilliant scholar), so he invites himself up to Urchins where he is introduced to the two angry wives, plus a house party of scholars and bibliophiles who were present at the time of death.
Might the missing manuscript be connected with Packford's death? Did one of his wives take it upon herself to murder the bigamous bibliophile? Or did Packford really commit suicide?
Sir John weighs in to another notable mixture of crime and scholarship, English eccentrics and American millionaires, farce, murder, and crumbling gothic masonry. "The Long Farewell" is a delightful mystery and by the time the body count reached three, even I had fingered the correct suspect.

Excellent FBI Mystery! 5 Stars All the Way Through
I listen to this story, as well as the whole series, over & over. Raleigh Harmon, female FBI agent is on the job again. This time, undercover at the horse track. On the job she comes in contact w several suspects: from the stall hands to the mob. Horses are mysteriously dying & she has less than 2 wks to keep the track (& her entire career) from blowing to pieces.
The best of the series so far
I have enjoyed all of the books in the series so far & this is no exception. Great timing & a cracking pace- you can feel your heat beating along with Raleigh's. I really hope there will be another one!!!!
