The "emotional, spicy-hot story" (Belle's Book Bag) that propelled Kelsie Leverich to the New York Times best-seller list!
Tattoo artist Ronnie Clark is counting the days until Valentine's Day is over. Ronnie doesn't do romance. She doesn't do flowers or dates, and she sure as hell doesn't do love - not anymore.... Love leads to heartbreak, and she's vowed never to let herself get hurt again.
Sergeant First Class Kale Emerson is home on his mid-tour leave from Iraq, but he only has one thing on his mind - returning to his soldiers to finish leading their mission. He's dedicated to his men and to his country, and he's not interested in getting wrapped up in a distracting relationship - but casual sex, that's a different story. But as their sexual chemistry ignites, the lines of their arrangement get blurry, and Ronnie starts to push Kale away. And when Kale realizes he's found his match in this gorgeous, razor-tongued woman who is hell-bent against love, winning her heart could be the toughest battle he has ever fought.

    Worthwhile
I read this after reading her Rush novel and I have to say that I personally enjoyed the Rush novel better. That being said this author has a way of making you feel the gut wrenching feelings her characters depict. You feel the anguish, the raw feelings of hurt and what I think is most difficult to get across love depsite character flaws. This author is talented no doubt and I look forward to reading more of her stories. I presonally preferred the love scenes in Rush .... base sex is not my cup of tea, but overall this book is worth the money or the credit.
Good story despite the cranky main character
When I started this book I wasn't sure I would make it through to the end---I wasn't immediately a fan of the main character Ronnie, and the narrator was kind of grating on my nerves in the voice of Ronnie--but, I hunkered down and listened on! Surprisingly, I enjoyed the story. Ronnie's stank attitude...it was a little over the top and needed a little more vulnerability to make her truly likable, however, Kale on the other hand was a great alpha male that helped make the story more enjoyable. I was totally in love with him by the end, such a catch!
I wouldn't say this is credit worthy, but definitely worth purchasing on sale. Steamy sex and a take charge alpha male that's worthy of each of the 4 stars I'm giving it.

    Does not disappoint
I really enjoyed it. Once again, the author has created a place that - in the midst of conflict and sadness - feels safe, peaceful and populated by kind people. It easily drew me in, and I was happy to remain until I finished it late the same evening. Hoping I do not have to wait a long time for another getaway for my imagination; James' writing so far has consistently left me feeling warm, satisfied, and optimistic about human nature - not to mention love.
    A happy tear-jerker
I know that sounds like an oxymoron, but it is an apt description of this book. Despite dealing with issues such as death, survivors' guilt, and PTSD, this still manages to be a lovely romantic story. You can't help liking the family at the center of the story. Kudos to the author for dealing with the actions and dialogue of the children in the family as normal children -- all too often we find children depicted as miniature adults, spouting dialogue which makes you suspect that the authors have never known (or even been) children! This is not the first Kristen James I have read, and to date I have never been disappointed by her. Have your tissues at the ready, but still be prepared to smile. I recommend this book for everyone.
    Point Hope
This is "dark" romance where the H has to fight PTSD that has grown a deep division with his wife who is also struggling with a miscarriage. They have a houseful of extended family that need them. They include his baby brother (15) their own two children. Then they get his middle brother's infant and her aunt (21) to add to the home life. There is the next door neighbor who wants in. He fights his demons daily. With all that was happening she asks for a divorce. This was a story that I could not put down. I needed to finish it to the end. I recommend it to you to read. I have read other books by this author and have not been disappointed by her. I will be reading more for that same reason.
    Heartwarming..and heartbreaking...
This book is Both heartbreaking, and heartwarming..it pulls and stretches your emotions from all angles! Yet it still comes across as a good read. This is one to take to the beach,or curl up with on a rainy day.Its got romance, children, death of a family member, mystery, jealousy, self esteem issues, post traumatic stress; issues that touch just about anyone's family.
But in spite of everything this family is going thru, there is love, and where there is love, there is always hope. So that when you're reading this book (and relating to it) you also find yourself relating to the hope for whatever you are going thru in your own family.

    Just couldn't finish it.
The characters were just to annoying, and the story just too tedious. I kept forcing myself to listen too it, determined to finish it, just to be done. In the end, it just seemed like it would never be over. I actually did just give up.
    EASY GOING LIGHT ROMANCE
Oliver and Audrey have the same dinner date December 20th each year and there's plenty of sizzling attraction going on but neither can do anything about it because she's married to his best friend. That is until circumstances change.
This is a sweet romance about a woman being attracted to a very hot, sexy, rich and handsome guy who she feels is way way out of her league, some major secrets and Oliver's commitment issues. The story just centres around the two characters, is dialogue driven and spans several years before anything happens between them, there's a few 'yeah right as ifs', a twist, romance but sadly no hot 'n heavy which, IMHO, would have enriched the listen. It was an Australian narrator and I sometimes had trouble working out who was speaking.
It's short and sweet and for $3.46 for nearly 5 hours worth of contemporary listening what have you got to lose.

    Perfect Contempary Story
What did you love best about Breaking the Rules?
I love how strong and loving the characters are. Barbara Samuel has a way of pulling you into a story and then it never leaves you. I love how adult the topics are and how doing the right thing is always an underlining theme.
What other book might you compare Breaking the Rules to and why?
Jezebel's Blues, Walk in Beauty, Midnight Rain and anything else by Barbara Samuel.
    Which scene was your favorite?
When Zeke finally realize he can't live without Mattie. I also like when Zeke and Mattie work out their demons together.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
At the end when Mattie comes back and Zeke can't get enough of her.
    Any additional comments?
I love Barbara Samuel's contemporary stories the most, but her historical novels are good too.

An average listen..Maybe not worth a credit though
I purchased this on sale and am glad I didn't spend a credit on it. Whle I might not return it, I wasn't blown away.
I found the protagonist a bit fluffy and the probable bad guy sleazy.
Can't highly recommend..there are many much better novels out there.
    Average.
somewhere between liked it and eh
I'm too familiar with university/academic life to find many of the events in this book highly unlikely. The female lead, as usual, is annoying. The story has many typical formulas as well. In spite of all the above, it was cute.
Soft and sweet above average romance
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I would recommend this book to a friend if it were on sale. The MSRP is quite high.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Ilyana Kadushin?
Yes, but I would have to speed it up to 1.25 or 1.5 X to keep the story moving along. Kadushin has a very soft indistinct voice.
    3.5 stars
    Any additional comments?
Intimate scenes are inappropriate for younger audiences
Plot gets better, but the characters are annoying.
After randomly picking a book from my extensive list of books I have bought when they were on sale, this is what came up. At first I thought it was only a romance in which I was getting bored and debated giving up on the story. I couldn't remember what the synopsis was supposed to even be about. I also was not a fan of the heroine, she was scared of her own shadow and always sitting around fantasizing. I am not a fan of dreams or fantasies played out in books, like they were actually happening, this annoys me in stories and this story has Melanie's fantasies all the time. Then she refers to God as a "she" and the way it was portrayed just had me rolling my eyes. At this point I again almost gave up on the story but I figured I give the book 2 hours. After the initial boringness the book gets better although I barely like the main characters. Also if you looking for a clean action/romance there is no sex in this book. I recommend only getting this on sale and not spending a credit on it. Narrator's voice was almost too soft but she does okay.
    Great romance
This was a very interesting story with characters that were real , characters you could identify with. I actually was emotional at times and I have read so many books that it is a rare occurrence for a character to get to me but Melanie did. This is a sweet story with no heat between the characters, but a nice kinda old-fashioned love story. The plot moved along nicely and kept my interest.

    Publisher's Summary:
New York Times best-selling author Susan Andersen has captivated listeners everywhere with her sassy romances. Here, a man who doesn't believe in love and a woman who doesn't trust in it find out just how wrong they can be....
    A Man With a Past
J.D. Carver learned life's tough lessons on the streets, so when an unexpected inheritance sends him to the Star Lake Lodge to claim his half, he's expecting trouble. Being greeted with open arms by the whole Lawrence gang - feisty Aunt Sophy and calm Uncle Ben, clearly off-limits Dru and her young son, Tate - just convinces him they're working an angle, and he's determined to uncover it. Even though a tiny part of him longs for the home-and-hearth life they have....
    A Woman With a Reputation
Dru's finally beaten her bad-girl reputation, and though the Lodge may not be exciting, she's fiercely protective of her quiet home. Hard-eyed J.D.'s ability to push all her buttons - some of which haven't been pushed in way too long - just proves how wrong he is for her. So why does her son hero-worship the guy? And why does her heart clench when he gets that "nose pressed against the candy shop window" look on his face.
In Love and All Shook Up
They thought they knew everything their lives had to offer...until they met. Can a failed good girl and a guy who never caught a break learn to believe in one another long enough to trust their love?
    Members Reviews:
Feel good romance that feels real
Great romance with a bit of drama. I loved that, for a change, the hero was not rich and full of self-confidence but rather a guy who had struggled to make a decent life and do the right thing against all odds. He had experienced so many obstacles to make a good life that when something decent finally came his way he was unable to recognise that it was real and good because he had never experienced that. And the heroine was great - ballsy and not afraid to say things as they are. It was really nice to see a couple who did not spend most of their relationship trying to cover up their feelings. Ok, we did have the inevitably set back and the showdown with the baddie but again, these felt real. Particularly when it was the heroine who took down the baddie - and saved the hero. Made for a nice change. And then she wanted to vomit after she had done it - you don't get more real than that!
I also have to give credit to the narration on this book. It was simply brilliant.

    interesting and enjoyable book
I found this book to be interesting and enjoyable. Willow is a famous actress who falls victim to the crazy Hollywood lifestyle. She ends up in rehab because of it. When she is released, she gets a lead role in a new movie. In steps Cooper, a surf instructor who is perfect in every way. He has to teach her how to surf for this movie. Obviously, there is major sexual attraction. Overall, I enjoyed the book. The character's behavior and reactions almost make the story seem believable. I would recommend this author and look forward to tackling more of her books.
    Worthwhile story
Is there anything you would change about this book?
    3.5 stars
For the majority of the book I really liked both Willow and Cooper. However lack of honesty between the two becomes an issue. I loved that Willow was an actress with issues and that Cooper had his own problems but had learnt to grow from them. He shows that people can learn to live with hardships and make the best of situations. Cooper start off as a royal sexy accented jerk but grow on the listener and Willow quite quickly. Willow is a mess, however she has left rehab and is attempting to make a real change in her life. That road isn't without its bumps, then again what road is.
Her parents are awful, her agent is useless. I loved her body guard he is a cute giant with a big heart. Paige is probably my favourite character. She's so real and personable.
The narrator was good, she was easy to listen to and differentiate between who was talking. I'd listen to something by her again.
    Good story
Not your cookie cutter romance. Both Cooper and Willow are tow damaged people who fall and love and learn to move on from troubled pasts and pain beautifully written as well.
    Great Story
This is a great listen. Of course it has the fairy tale type feel in places but it works. It's very mild in the "steamy" department but it's one of those you enjoy anyway. I thought it was a credit well spent.

    Dubious accents
While I enjoyed this book and the characters in it, the narration was at times very confusing due to the nature of Luca's accent which more often than not sounded like Eastern Block mafia than charming Italian. Apart from this, it was an enjoyable and sexy romp that I have come to expect from this author.
