Glen Cook for Grown-Ups

Cook's a splendid writer, better than I think he gives himself credit for. The better-known Black Company books, though sometimes 10% too purple, are solid military fantasy with a real edge and interesting characters. These books; though lacking the flair of Cook's earlier works, are deeper, wider, and quite a bit more even.

It may take awhile to get into these. The scope is vast, encompassing essentially all of an alternate Europe from Spain to Turkey, Norway to Libya and occasionally beyond. The names are challenging (and everything's renamed!), and Cook takes no prisoners with Arabic-inspired and other foreign names (giving the books a very realistic color), so it can be a challenge to keep up with the characters. But the characters are utterly rewarding. The centerpiece of the book, Piper Hecht (who starts out Else Tage); is more than just one of Cook's competent, humane (for the period) commanders; along the way he acquires a family, changes employers several times, and struggles with conflicting loyalties and a man's concerns about the course of his life. Other notables include splendidly venal priests and prelates, rulers of varying degrees of madness and / or competency, richly realized; two marvelously bloodthirsty women; soldiers (of course) from Just Plain Joe the animal-handler to Hecht's loyal (and occasionally disloyal) staff; my favorite, the struggling holy man Brother Candle; and a great-grandfather who's simultaneously a powerful, ancient wizard and a splendily comic foil who reminds me oddly of Serge Storms (from Tim Dorsey).

While Cook's always been a plot-driven writer, he slows down a bit in these books to smell the thematic roses, and it's richly rewarding. The books are filled with rewarding dialogues and expositions on Big Issues; family and career, militarism and pacifism, the role of religion in society; the impact of new technologies; adaptation to change in the world.

A few issues place this one firmly at "average".

"The Kingless Land" is a fantasy book from an older mindset and storytelling style. It's use of language very traditional to the point of being overdone and the plot points within it equally so.

It's not a "bad" story by any means, but there are a few audio editing choices and writing quarks that put enough of a damper on the audiobook experience to keep it at the "average" mark.

First off, the pacing is awkward. If a listener is trying to multitask at all while listening to this, then they might find themselves rewinding a few times because they are taken off guard by a sudden unannounced jump to other character perspectives or scenes from a character's past. These transitions are harsh, occurring mid action scene or, in one noticeable occasion, mid sentence.

Secondly, the narrator's audio work is all over the place. Wanda McCaddon has a pleasant enough voice, but there are random pauses that were not edited out and mess with the pacing even further. She also seems to have a bit of trouble with the range of character voices that this book seems to need. To many characters sound the same for a story that jumps around this much.

As an audiobook experience this book is recommended to listeners with a lot of patience for simpler and older fantasy adventure themes. Those looking for something with more modern language, twists, or sense of humor might want to pass on this one until it's on sale.

Awkward Paused and a Good Story

Narrator would periodically pause for just long enough for me to think my app had crashed.

Very flat story

So much happened and then again, nothing at all happened that much. Every character just seemed so flat and all the things I wanted described in detail weren't. I felt that this is a wast.

A good idea, but

The idea is good, as is the plot, but too many names for an audiobook which made the listening, for me, fragmented.

I enjoyed this series and found myself wanting to hear what happens. I hope there is another book.

I enjoyed the first book better, but still a good.

A WORTHY SEQUEL

Staying true to the original formula that worked so well in "Promise Of The Wolves", Dorothy Hearst's second installment in this planned trilogy of books follows very closely in the proverbial paw prings of its predecessor. If you enjoyed the first novel in this series, you'll love this one as well. The storyline is progressed, character development is deepened, and the plot thickens throughout the entirety of this enthralling tale. Even with the major cliffhanger of an ending that leaves you wanting oh so much more, "Secrets Of The Wolves" does a marvelous job when it comes to addressing some of the unanswered questions that the first novel left behind, but perhaps does an even better job when it comes to raising new ones at the end of this epic work. Guess we'll all have to wait until the third installment of this series comes out, whenever that might be, to have all the remaining loose ends of this fascinating story arc tied up completely. Until then, don't miss this worthy sequel! Justine Eyre does a nice job, once again, as narrator, aside from a few falters with character names, but nothing major.

Series gets even better with second volume

If in the first volume S.M.Stirling created a world of extreme complexity with noir plots going in multiple directions in this volume he adds to the balls he's juggling and pulls it off so well you feel cheated because you wanted another thousand pages to cover every wonderful aspect of this delightfully dark and twisted world. He cheerfully mixes the blackest noir with occult / vampires and adds enough technothriller conspiracy twists to leave the reader's mind gasping at how he keeps twisting what you think is really happening. You'll get to the end and go OMG and restart it immediately because now that you know what is actually happening [maybe - NOTHING in this series is ever what it seems] you will have to read searching for the clues you missed. The heroic couple is dark and textured and the evil twin sister is among the best dark female villains of an author known for these. The Paris section alone is worth the entire book - the author obviously knows the real city, not just the tourist traps. The only bummer is waiting a year for the next volume. This is vampire / shifter fiction for adults [and not just sexually]. It is a pity the system does not allow me a sixth star to give it.

Not This Author's Best, but Better Than Most Authors' Best.

EXPLANATORY NOTE! I gave this book 4 stars because I was comparing it to Mr. Stirling's other work, particularly the "Change" series (Dies the Fire, my personal choice as "best novel of the third millennium CE," and sequels) which I like better than this series. That comparison probably wasn't fair. If I rated this novel against all the urban fantasy I've read, it would be a definite 5 stars.

As usual, Mr. Stirling, a near-obsessive amateur historian, goes to extremes to create a fantasy universe that incorporates most of the tropes of standard modern vampire novels, but that holds together logically and historically, even if it pushes the known laws of physics and biology.

The major flaw is the cliffhanger ending. You'd think this author would know that his followers will buy whatever he writes, so it's safe to make each novel in the series resolve within itself. No need to leave anyone frustrated. But maybe the publishers want to pull in new Stirling readers from the vampire fans, and feel the cliffhanger is needed for them.

This isn't the book I would recommend to a newbie as the first Stirling novel to read, but he's never written anything that I wouldn't recommend highly.

Old school fantasy.

Having drifted away from Feist many years ago - as his Midkemia novels became poorer and poorer, and all he seemed to be doing was milking the magnificent "Magician" - I was intrigued to see that he was finally wrapping the series up. And so I jumped back into his world, and it's a lot of fun so far. The writing's still as clunky and cliched as always but it works as a great slice of escapism, and it's great to be back in Crydee after all these years. I've read hardly any of the intervening 20-odd books but it's easy enough to get to grips with the characters and context, and I'm looking forward to the rest of the trilogy. (Excellently narrated too.)

having been a fan of Raymond E Feist since his first book, I was little apprehensive about having someone read his story to me, would the voices match my interpretation of them, would the excitement come across in the same way I read it, would it work....this is my first audio book....I need not have worried, a magnificent interpretation of the story, although I hadn't envisaged some of the accents but once locked in, they worked...beautifully read and a great, great story that stands alone whether you are familiar with his earlier books in the story...totally hooked and driving and air flights will never be the same...

"Middle book" of a creative series

Keeper of the Keys is a "middle book," so much of the plot involves Jaric???s gradually increasing realization and conviction that he can no longer deny the world the talents he was given as Firelord???s heir, even though he risks the madness that his father suffered. Though there are many exciting episodes in Keeper of the Keys, they mainly serve to get Jaric ready to prepare himself for the future.

Wurts??? story is creative and I especially like the SFF mix which is reminiscent of Andre Norton???s Witchworld. Wurts??? characters are likable and the transitions they go through, especially Jaric???s, are realistic (though I was really ready for Jaric to man up by the end of this book). I especially like a couple of the gruffer characters: The Kielmark and his captain Corley. Wurts is particularly good with these types of characters and they are a nice counterpoint to Jaric???s occasional whininess.

Thorpe???s enthusiastic voice is charming and I read on Ms. Wurts??? forum that he has all of the names and places pronounced correctly. I have one complaint, though ??? something I???ve realized may be specific to the audio version: Though the dialogue is quite nice and the scenery and action are clearly described, I find that, for me at least, the occasional wordiness and frequent use of participial phrases at the beginning of sentences reduces the vividness of my mental imagery and interrupts the plot???s tension.

Because I???m a Strunk & White kind of girl, the conspicuousness of the style affected my enjoyment of the audio version, but it???s only likely to bother weird people like me. (Weird people such as me, I mean.) I should also mention that The Cycle of Fire is Janny Wurts??? first epic and that I prefer her later style.

I???m looking forward to Shadowfane. I don???t doubt that Jaric and Taen will save the world, but it will be fun to see how they triumph, to find out what happens to Emien and Anskiere, and to learn more about the history of the Vaere and the Corinne Dane.

Interesting but extreamly melodramatic

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The story is very interesting but the author has overdone with drama. The emotions and motivations of the male characters are unbelievably unrealistic and melodramatic and blind to the fault (especially Jaricks). As a male I cannot phantom them nor relate to them. Wouldnt be able to finish reading the book because of it, but with audiobook it is possible to disable disbelive and skip those parts with half a ear, to see what will happen next, though it is frustrating.

Not suitable for audio

This applies for the entire series. The books are complicated and I believe not suitable for audio book format.
