the villian is way to easy to see
need to make sure the readers can't guess who the villian is within the first 10 chapters it takes a little our the main plot and makes the side plots seem more important
    beautiful
great book series. loved them all. the other books by her are just as amazing
    Simply Amazing
This book has it all, this is a truly fantastic series! CANT wait for more!
    Amazing story
    Amazing plot twists
    Amazing ending
    Amazing....!
    Almost complete
Most of the plot ties up at the end of this book. I am hoping for another.
    Wonderful Story, Poorly Told.
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
As much as I love these books in their printed form, I was terribly disappointed by this format. While I would gladly recommend this series to a friend in its written form, I would be a poor friend indeed if I inflicted this format on anyone I considered a friend. Unfortunately the narrator spoiled this whole series for me, making the story feel flat, and many of the characters sound ridiculous, or like something from a comic book.
What did you like best about this story?
Again I use the written format to respond to this question, as this format was ruined. The thing I liked best about the stories was the varied characters, and the depth that Gail Z. Martin gave each of them, without spending thirty pages describing them.
What didnt you like about Gail Z. Martin and Peter Ganim s performance?
    NOTHING!!
Do you think Dark Lady's Chosen needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
I happen to know that two further books were published to round out this series, but as yet are not available in audio format. If they are ever translated into audio, please DON'T allow Peter Ganim to narrate them.
    Any additional comments?
This is one of my favorite series, and it was totally ruined by a poor narrator. I freely admit that I am dreadful at reading aloud, but I have the kindness and good grace not to inflict my inadequacies on others

    Publisher: Tantor Audio

Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fantasy: Epic
    Publisher's Summary:
The glaciers came and covered the world with ice. Now they are in retreat. North of the city of Nidaros, north of the forest, north of the steppes where the nomadic Bizogots hunt, a gap has opened in the ice-wall. And down through that gap come the men who call themselves "Rulers." Their terrifying cavalry rides wooly mammoths. Their bows can shoot arrows farther than those of the southerners. Their wizards wield power that neither the shamans of the Bizogots nor the wizards of Raumsdalian Empire can match---a magic that can melt the stone beneath a man's feet, call down blasting fire from the sky, or decimate a tribe with plagues that have no cure.
Scattered survivors of the Bizogot tribes hide from the Rulers. The Empire is shattered. The feckless Emperor Sigvat II is in hiding. Against the Rulers stands Count Hamnet Thyssen and his small band of friends: Jarl Trasamund of the Three Tusk Bizogots; the adventurer Ulric Skakki; and, most important, Marcovefa, the female shaman of a cannibal tribe that lives atop the Glacier itself. Marcovefa has magic that the Rulers cannot counter. But there are many Rulers, and they have many wizards. Marcovefa is but one.
Perhaps Hamnet and his allies can save their lands from the Rulers. But first they must seek out the legendary Golden Shrine---and the Golden Shrine has not been seen by human eyes since the time before the glaciers came.
    Editorial Reviews:
Winner of numerous AudioFile Earphones Awards, narrator William Dufris' verbal agility adds dynamism to this final novel in the Opening of the World trilogy. Count Hamnet Thyssen and his band of friends stand against invaders who have decimated the Raumsdalian Empire with their woolly mammoths and powerful wizards. As they search for the legendary Golden Shrine, Dufris thrills with his energetic descriptions of scenes of battle and action.
Listeners will be particularly amazed by Dufris' exceptional characterizations, with each character given his or her own voice, from Ulric's breathy high pitch to Hamnet's no-nonsense growl.

    Publisher's Summary:
Centuries after the death of Uthar the Great, the throne of the Ontilian Empire lies vacant. The late Emperor's brother-in-law and murderer, Lord Urdhven, appoints himself Protector to his nephew, young King Lathmar VII and sets out to kill anyone who stands between himself and mastery of the Empire, including (if he can manage it) the King himself and his ancient but still formidable ancestress, Ambrosia Viviana.
When Ambrosia is accused of witchcraft and put to trial by combat, she is forced to play her trump card and call on her brother, Morlock Ambrosius--stateless person, master of all magical makers, deadly swordsman, and hopeless drunk.
As ministers of the king, they carry on the battle, magical and mundane, against the Protector and his shadowy patron. But all their struggles will be wasted unless the young king finds the strength to rule in his own right and his own name.

    Dazed and Confused
To me this book had all the makings of great fantasy. Interesting characters, plot, and action but I just kept getting lost. I'am used to reading quite a bit of fantasy - Tolkien, Jordan, Sanderson, even Christopher Paulinni, and loved all their books but with this book I just kept getting lost. I knew what the characters were doing but not where or why. Even time would seem to pass in strange intervals. To give an example without spoiling the story. If you read the summary it talks about the Kings Protector. In one seen he is sitting next to the king at the parade grounds as a trial ends and then he walks back to the palace and has a long discussion which seems to indicate that hours had passed, then he sends his soldiers back to kill the king who is still at the parade ground in the middle of the night. I assume its night since the soldiers carried torches and it was dark, but I can't figure out why the king was there at the parade grounds. Did he just sit there for the whole afternoon? I just can't make sense of it.
I don't mean to offend anyone who enjoyed this book because it seems that many people do, but imho I just did not enjoy this book because half the time it felt like I was watching a indie foreign movie without subtitles. Thats how dazed and confused I felt.
    Jay Snyder Nails It
I was very impressed with narrator Jay Snyder, who does wonderful voices. He absolutely nails Morlock Ambrosius and his Dwarven apprentice Wyrtheorn, and does a wonderful job of allowing the young king Lathmar to actually age and mature across the 14 hours plus of the audiobook (that was really impressive). All the villains and supporting characters are great. He does slip up with Ambrosia. I think he keyed off the fact that Lathmar calls her "Grandmother" and so she starts out sounding a little too frail. But by the time she's wearing a full suit of armor and lopping off heads, he seems to have figured this out, and her voice has altered as much as it can without being inconsistently with where it began. (I picture someone between Cher and Rene Russo, personally. Morlock, of course, is Hugh Laurie if he's anyone.) But overall I was more than impressed with Jay Snyder's reading, and suspect this is an audiobook I'm going to come back to every few years, and one I could easily see listening to with my children when they are older.

    Demystifying Tolkien
Tolkien has always asserted that there was never a 1:1 corollary with between the real world and Middle-Earth, but rather that the themes presented in his books were allegories for both the events of the real world in his lifetime as well as for the religious ideas that he held dear. A staunch Catholic and medievalist who relished his studies of the pagan world, Tolkien often combined the two in such a way as to present his higher ideals without beating his readers over the head with it as his friend C.S. Lewis might have done in his Narnia books. As a result, he spent a lot of years fighting off the critics who denied his Christianity and his contributions to the faith.
This book is quite possibly one of the best defenses I've ever seen compiled in the name of Tolkien's faith. Unlike Tolkien, I am not myself a Christian, however, I've come to learn that to study anything medieval or anything Tolkien requires a familiarity with Christianity and its evolution. Even then, knowing such things doesn't allow you to connect the dots because Tolkien is often subtle, hiding his intent behind older meanings and linguistic veils. This book demystifies a good chunk of it. For those who have only read The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings, this book will go a long way towards creating a new appreciation and understanding. For those like myself who are constantly trying to decode The Silmarillion, this book is of immense value. The only negative I could point to in this book is that there are a handful of moments where the Christian reinterpretation of Old Testament texts are a bit overboard, but at the same time, this is likely how Tolkien himself would have interpreted such things. It's all perception.
Nadia May continues to be one of the best of the best when it comes to narration, regardless of what name she chooses to use. Her pronunciations are at times a bit different than what Tolkien fans might expect (especially those who got used to the films), but on the whole, she delivers with enthusiasm and authority.
    NICE BOOK!!!
Quite simply this is a great treatment of Tolkiens moral and world view as seen in his works.nicely read to boot....all Christians can trust this treatment and all non Christians will still love its mellow wisdom...enjoy

    Insightful
I thought that I had picked up most of the Christian references and insights into Tolkien's amazing works, but Mark Eddy Smith has given me a whole new dimension and insight not only into "Lord of the Rings" but also into my own faith. I thoroughly recommend it!
The most inspirational book I've ever read
I love the movies, but I've never been s big fan of the books, still I love the way this book is pout together. 100% inspirational. if you don't like Tolkien when you start this book, you probably will after and you'll find inspiration in his stories.

I feel well on my way to understanding Tolkien's mind, and after reading this. 10/10
    Excellent for life's rough roads

    Great narration, moving story
I joined audible, primarily for the discount on the mp3 player, but also because of long commutes and office hours, I spent days browsing the site looking for a suitable book to take on my travels.
I am a very big scifi and fantasy fan. I am also an animal lover. Some of my favorite books include: Alien Chronicles, The Wild Road, The Golden Cat, The Last Unicorn, and Spindle's End. And I would place this book right up there with them. If you've read any of the aforementioned books, you will enjoy Promise of the wolves.
It may frighten young children, as it has some pretty heavy moments, lots of death, strife, struggle, etc.
But for preteens, teens, and tweens, I think this is an excellent book, and like other popular Young Adult novels, I think adults can enjoy it just as much as their children. I don't even have children and I enjoyed this book immensely.
The narrator does an excellent job. Her voice is very pleasant, and she even throws her voice a bit to differentiate when certain characters are speaking.
This was my first experience with audible and audio books in general. But I am overall, pleased with this download and would recommend it to others who enjoy fantasy adventure or love animals.
Good books are hard to find.
This book is one of the few books that I enjoy. Its creative and thrilling Its a book I would read more than once.
amazing book and very week read.
reader manages to give every character their own voice bringing then each to life in their own unique way.
A heart warming, must read story
If you have a love for wolves, dogs or animals in general, this is a must read.
I first read the hard copy of this book in 2008. i loved it then. It was even better 9 years later listening to it.
This is so good I love it. I love all the book
This is a amazing book I can't wait to read the second one. I also love the caracters and there personality's.

    Excellent!!
This book is amazing, I enjoyed the Shanarra series, but this is so much better. It mixes Sci-Fi with Fantasy in an original fashion, explaining the transition from our modern world to the world of Fantasy and Magic.
I bought this book to listen too on my morning commute, but unfortunately I was unable to put it away and completed it in 2 days. I hope there is a sequel.
    Good Book
A good read though, though very different when compared to the normal fantasy shannara series, this is more sci fi fantasy set 10- 30 years from now!. It has lots of references to the word and void, a magic not used in any of the later books.
The reading is ok but I wish we could get one reader per series.
    But still a good book
    Armegeddons Children
I like the way Terry Brooks is using this Series to bridge to other sets of his works. The references to the TWTV series although quite frequent are not enough to leave someone who is yet to read TWTV in the dark. My only gripe with purchasing this book is finding out that Audible have parts 1 and 3 but not part 2. Come on Audible if people are going to start a series in audiobook format they need to be able to finish it in audiobook format without having to purchase hardcopies in between.
what goes around has been around
For those who have followed the earlier books it's Shannara all over again but earlier. Still good storytelling with parallel story lines.
Terry Brooks is a great author
Armageddons Children is a great book. The best thing about it all is when your listening to the story you imagine the characters and where they are and the conditions that they had to live in, the struggles they had to endure a long the way. I strongly recommend this to anyone who likes fantasy.

The war in the north is coming to an end, but more and more it seems neither brother, Arthur nor Sebastian, will end as the true victor. The priest Luther rallies an army of Karak, his aims unclear. Further north, Cyric continues to proclaim himself a god, and his followers are many. Caught between two enemies, Darius and Jerico must stand together to prevent the destruction of everything they hold dear.
And the key to their victory might be someone sworn to kill them both. Even the strongest can break before a furious god.
    Members Reviews:
    Another wonderful installation from Dalglish
Dalglish continues his wonderful Palladin epic in this book, and unlike many authors he does not skimp on the care he devotes to each character. In fact, in some cases the character development was even better. I was tiring of Valessa and her mindless bent on revenge-for-no-reason, but in this book she actually develops some sympathetic qualities.
I confess that at times I was losing track of which struggle was which - after all, we've been through four books of attacks, sieges, misguided leaders and valiant last stands. However, the writing still draws you in, promising hope-against-hope and beauty even in the ugliest of situations.
If you read the author's commentary about his books, you learn how lovingly he treats each personality, and how he allows them to evolve as individual entities, even if it means changing his original story plan.
This book made me realize that Amazon still has a long way to go with its recommendations system. I've bought every book this fellow has written, so it should have immediately appeared on my recommendations list. Instead, they keep trying to push me on James Patterson and George R. R. Martin. What gives, Amazon?
It's not the destination that matters, but the journey...
I have followed the series to its conclusion, and I cannot say enough about how I enjoyed the intertwining plot and the position the characters were placed into: Jerico, Darius, Kaide, Sandra, Luther, Valessa, Redclaw or Silver-Leaf. I was invested in each one of them and their dilemmas.
SPOILER ALERT--- PLEASE DON'T READ IF YOU HAVE NOT READ THE BOOKS
Cyric has become an abomination. Luther has to align himself with Jerico. Kaide is indebted to Jerico, but wants to kill Luther and will not be denied. Valessa wants to kill Cyric and then wants to kill Darius, and if she had time probably Jerico just for kicks. Darius wants to be more like Jerico, and I forgot to mention that Valessa must safeguard Darius--did I mention she wants to kill him. Redclaw has been given great power by Cyric to the point that he no longer feels like the werewolf he was destined to be and has become Cyric's most favored pet. And Cyric wants everyone enslaved and/or dead.
While reading the final book I thought about Jerico and Darius' relationship and how strong it has been since the beginning of the series, and even though they have not seen each other until the end, they come together (with Valessa) to end the threat that is Cyric.

The final book in the Soldier Son series, from the author of the Tawny Man and Farseer trilogies, following on from the best-selling Shamans Crossing and Forest Mage.
The people of Getty's town remember the death of their cemetery soldier vividly. They remember believing him guilty of unspeakable crimes, condemning him, and then watching as other men of his unit beat him until he no longer drew breath. But Nevare Burvelle didn't die that day, though everyone believes they saw it happen. He was cornered by a power far more intractable than an angry mob. When he was a boy, the magic of the Specks - the dapple-skinned tribes of the frontier forests - claimed Nevare as a saviour; severing his soul in two, naming his stolen half Soldier's Boy and shaping him into a weapon to halt the Gernian expansion into their lands and save their beloved ancestor trees. Until now Nevare has defied the magic, unable to accept his traitorous fate. But the magic has won: It has extinguished his once golden future, devastated his family and has now turned his own people against him. Faced with endangering the only loved-ones he has left, Nevare has no choice but to surrender to its will and enter the forest.
But surrendering to his Speck destiny is only the beginning of his trials. Before he submits completely, Nevare makes one desperate last attempt to deter the Gernians from the Barrier Mountains without causing them harm. But the magic accepts no compromise. Exhausted, Nevare can no longer suppress his traitorous Speck self, Soldiers Boy. Losing control, he becomes a prisoner in his own body; able only to watch helplessly as his other half takes Soldier's Boy is determined to stop the Gernian expansion at all cost, and unlike Nevare, he has no love, nor sympathy for his spirit-twin's world.

"Hobb is one of the great modern fantasy writers what makes her novels as addictive as morphine is not just their imaginative brilliance but the way her characters are compromised and manipulated by politics." (The Times)
    Members Reviews:
Not up to Hobb's usual standard...
Ive persevered with this story to the third book as it has some very good characters, but maaaaannnn this book is so slow. Its incredibly repetitive, nothing seems to happen for the first two thirds.
I think at least half of it could be edited out and it would read better (and this coming from someone who thinks the bigger the book, the better!) I havent finished yet as still listening but I think if Id been reading this in the traditional sense Id have given up by now, or sped through it just to see how it ends.
Even being a massive fan of Hobbs amazing writing I cant help but be a bit disappointed. The narrator is excellent however, loved him throughout all three books. Just a shame the plot is a so stale.
Hopes dashed for a satisfying ending
What did you like best about Renegade's Magic? What did you like least?
I guess it was the completionist part of me that kept me going with this series.I quite liked the first book. It was by no means a gripping story like the Elderling Series, but I became quite invested in the main character. The second book seemed to meander endlessly, but I had hopes for a - if not great - at least satisfying ending.
What I got felt like 20 hours listening to someone describing the pleasure of food and eating.
