A unique stand-alone novel from Jonathan Kellerman. This novel grabs you and holds you from the beginning. A must read for readers of mystery/detective novels.

I chose this book because it is an early work by Kellerman and not part of his Dr. Alex Delaware series. The character in "The Butcher's Theater" is as smart as Alex Delaware but the book offers more suspense and action.

A must read.

Language Barrier

I have read most of Kellerman's novels and found this one different.The story line was complicated and made more so by the unexplained Hebrew words, which even in context were not decipherable. Perhaps he wrote this for a Jewish targeted market.Normally I would look up an unfamiliar word or phrase while reading but gave up in this case as there were too many.Stumbling along over Hebrew words made this novel a long and tedious read.

One of the best aspects of this novel is the careful development of a cast of disparate characters, not to mention a plot that is impossible to second guess as regards the ultimate villain. Engrossing and hits all the right notes.

Interesting locale

An entertaining read and a historical locale but, book is overly long. It is filled with phrases that requires the reader to continually stop and look up the various ranks of the multitude of characters involved in the story. If you are already a fan of this author you will probably enjoy it. If you are looking for fast action you may struggle with this.

This book is great introduction to a new author

This is the first book I have ever listened to by Barbara Fradkin. I think it is probably the first I've listened to that was set in Canada as well. The performance is enjoyable. I wanted to listen to more by this author after listening to this book.

The story itself was brilliant but I was confused with the names of the brothers. I was very disappointed with the narration, particularly the most ridiculous and bizarre Irish accent I have ever heard!

I enjoyed this book

Not sure that the story was really believable but I enjoyed the story

anyway.

A new detective with an interesting family history, a dark secret that wasn't dark, and an interesting sidekick.

Despite this sounding negative, I really enjoyed the book and will be looking out for more Sarah Hilary books.

Why?

What I dislike about this book is that the author makes it seem like all black people are illiterate and sell drugs. He also makes it seem like all black women are prostitutes, why does he refer to black people in this manner? All races do the same stuff so why is the Author only making it seem that black people are the only ones who sell drugs, prostitute, are illiterate or live in the projects?

Not brilliant but held my attention

Wouldn't go looking for more by this author, but I generally enjoyed listening.

Quick lessen for mystery fans in search of something light and not complex.

Mr. Kemprecos writes great stories, but just as intriguing, he always explores a new and interesting subject. He skillfully teaches you while you are busy reading and enjoying the book.

Great fun. Soc gets the bad guys again. I liked the action at the sea world type venue.

Needs better proofreading!

Enjoyed the story line but the proof reading in all his books is really, really bad. Misspelled words, missing words and misused words are very distracting to the point where about half way through I'm ready to just give up.

Secrets, Secrets, and More Secrets

The Chocolate Cupid Killings in the ninth entry in the Chocoholic Mystery series. It focuses on Lee Woodyard who works as the business manager at her aunt's gourmet chocolate shop, TenHuis Chocolade. While I enjoyed the book while I was reading it, it did leave a bad taste in my mouth.

Lee and her aunt are helping "Pamela" get on her feet after she left her abusive husband. Pamela is working under an assumed name as she tries to figure out what to do next. A detective shows up in town trying to find Pamela under her real name. When the detective is murdered outside TenHuis Chocolade, Lee and her aunt must decide whether to tell the police who the man was really looking for.

Meanwhile, Lee's husband Joe seems to have secrets of his own. First, there's the mysterious meeting he was part of in the police chief's office. An old friend from his law firm days shows up, but Joe doesn't want to spend any time with him. And Joe is holding secret meetings with other friends. Can Lee figure any of this out?

As always, this book was a fast, fun read. The characters are charming and feel like old friends at this point. Lee's habit of mixing up her words when she is nervous is used just enough to be charming without annoying us here. The rest of the rather large cast of characters are well developed again. The new characters are developed enough to be interesting, although they don't get enough time to become full characters.

When you realize there are only 230 pages, it's no surprise the pace of the book is fast and furious. Believe me, not one word is wasted as you travel from one important scene to another. I didn't want to put the book down.

And it is very well written. It's quite easy to fly through these pages without even realizing it.

Instead of recipes, these books include trivia about chocolate. This time around, the "Chocolate Chats" give us some insight into the growing and processing of chocolate to turn it into the candy we love to eat.

So what was my problem with the book? None, while I was reading it. But after I was finished, I realized that two plot points, one of them rather major, are never resolved. I can guess at one of them, but the second is still leaving me mystified. Frankly, the ending felt rushed, like the author bit off one too many sub-plots and was suddenly in a rush to resolve everything in her allotted words.

Narrator is hard to listen to

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would recommend this book if you like a simple who-done-it. The story in the book is good but the narrator is tough to listen too. She tries hard to be southern and fails in the attempt. Her struggle to pronounce each and every word perfectly drags the story on and on. I had to forward the tape to the end to get through the last hour. If there was a different narrator I would consider listening to more books in this series.

What aspect of Teresa DeBerrys performance would you have changed?

For her to not try so hard to be southern or not be so determined to enunciate each and every word as if she was talking to people who have difficulty understanding English.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Probably not.

A good Australian story to enjoy

I really like Peter Corris' books as they are set in Australia, are very descriptive and keep you interested in the story lines. This book is no exception. Some of the characters were however hard to get close to and I am not sure why. I started the book and found it a little hard to get involved in the story at first, but once I was about 20% of the way through it, I could not stop reading and finished it within a couple of days. If you like detective stories and want an Australian story that you can relate to in the descriptions, locations and believability of the story, this is a book for you to read.

Peter Corris writes familiar crime fiction in settings we all know. His is a dependable approach, and makes easy pleasurable reading. Lots of interesting characters, good plots, and a hero we can care about. Whenever a new title comes out, I just buy it, secure in the knowledge that it will be a good read

Another good read from Peter Corris

Corris is a great author of crimes set in Australia. His central character is laconic and Corris describes the Aussie way very well.
